    I'm assuming you should take all the green growth off your rootstock when your doing this right? I seen you left some on a couple. I've seen grafts of tomatoes done on potatoes it makes me wonder if we can do a pepper to a tomatoe to help avoid BER and TMV

  • @Mark-ut5vr

    Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits
    are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the
    seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless).
    Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut.

    Better to use just the top of the scion, then you get sideshoots that can be used later if the original graft didn't take. It also save the work of trimming the scion as well. And the top of the rootstock can be put down as a cutting for more rootstock........ one thing that I noticed is that you didn't mention the importance of clean tools, always dip the knife in either alcohol or a flame to sterilize it.

      That's a really hard question to answer. Start with tomatoes that work really well in your area. It'll take some questioning to find out which ones have really strong root stalks and then it'll be a matter of preference which scion you want to grow. Again focusing on what does well in your specific area. If you don't have enough experience than you'll want to find some one in your area who might

    I thought grafting was to make so you can have more than one variety on a plant what’s the point of this ???

    • @OklahomaGardening
      @OklahomaGardening  6 років тому +12

      While grafting can be used to have more than one variety on one plant, it is most often used to improve the vigor or disease tolerances of a given plant. For example; A slower growing heirloom tomato may be grafted onto a cherry tomato rootstock to improve the vigor and yield of the heirloom scion.

    can I graft female sprouts on male tomatoes to reduce numbers of male plants?

    • @OklahomaGardening
      @OklahomaGardening  7 років тому

      +Zaware thanks for watching! Tomato plants actually contain both male and female reproductive parts which makes them a perfect flower. So in this case it is impossible to graft a female plant onto a male plant because they are perfect flowers.

    Why graft while that plant can grow on its own steam ? 😳

    • @thevaultohio
      @thevaultohio 4 роки тому +1

      As he mentioned, The root stock can have disease resistant qualities to it and the top graft (scion) can a high yielding fruit production quality. Usually plants don't have both qualities naturally.

    • @luemn7691
      @luemn7691 4 роки тому

      It sure can grow on it's own but grafting a good tasting,disease prone tomato to a rootstock that is less prone to disease will make your tomato vine yield more tomatos. So the goal is to get more veggies from your hard work. Instead of hard work and less veggies.
