If I grafted a vigorous bush tomato scion - I'm thinking of Roma - onto an indeterminate/tall tomato such as Sweet Success, would it then grow as an inderteminate?
I'm assuming you should take all the green growth off your rootstock when your doing this right? I seen you left some on a couple. I've seen grafts of tomatoes done on potatoes it makes me wonder if we can do a pepper to a tomatoe to help avoid BER and TMV
Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut.
I ran out of the expensive rootstock seed so I'm going to use best boy that has a lot of resistance in a lot of vigor what do you think? Also I noticed you made a 45 cut on the rootstock above the cotyledon which I think is an oversight.
Better to use just the top of the scion, then you get sideshoots that can be used later if the original graft didn't take. It also save the work of trimming the scion as well. And the top of the rootstock can be put down as a cutting for more rootstock........ one thing that I noticed is that you didn't mention the importance of clean tools, always dip the knife in either alcohol or a flame to sterilize it.
very nice demo - i am retired and looking for doing other things besides playing golf. Thanks a lot. I will try this out when the temperature is less - not the 38C that it is now

That's a really hard question to answer. Start with tomatoes that work really well in your area. It'll take some questioning to find out which ones have really strong root stalks and then it'll be a matter of preference which scion you want to grow. Again focusing on what does well in your specific area. If you don't have enough experience than you'll want to find some one in your area who might
While grafting can be used to have more than one variety on one plant, it is most often used to improve the vigor or disease tolerances of a given plant. For example; A slower growing heirloom tomato may be grafted onto a cherry tomato rootstock to improve the vigor and yield of the heirloom scion.

+Zaware thanks for watching! Tomato plants actually contain both male and female reproductive parts which makes them a perfect flower. So in this case it is impossible to graft a female plant onto a male plant because they are perfect flowers.
OklahomaGardening Thanks, but here in India we bought tomato plants for farming & lots of them revealed as a male plant by a expert in agricultural field. He just told us to throw most of them because they don't yield less than female.
As he mentioned, The root stock can have disease resistant qualities to it and the top graft (scion) can a high yielding fruit production quality. Usually plants don't have both qualities naturally.
It sure can grow on it's own but grafting a good tasting, disease prone tomato to a rootstock that is less prone to disease will make your tomato vine yield more tomatos. So the goal is to get more veggies from your hard work. Instead of hard work and less veggies.
Great video thanks for sharing good info, grafting is addictive and fun I grafted many trees I just can't stop😀I recently grafted eggplant onto a huge tree that lives for over twenty years check it out if you get a chance tell me what you think

I feel like watching a horror movie, the pain of healthy plant, it's screaming of pain. The God is perfect, so it is His creation! You play god, yes, the one with a small letter. Professor or not, do not harm other entity! Next move, you cut your son's leg and graft it to yours, you think the plants do not have feelings. Tomato Frankenstein.

this looks really cool! cant wait to try. I wanted to combine some of my tomato plants together, what would you suggest for that? potatato stock root?
You should try some type of pepper plant.

you are using clips to hold scion & stock but after sometimes this scion dries & dies even if we place it in shade.

Sir can you make a video in grafting of banana tree. We have seen a lot of videos but we can't understand the technique of banana tree grafting.

I thought grafting was to make so you can have more than one variety on a plant what’s the point of this ???
While grafting can be used to have more than one variety on one plant, it is most often used to improve the vigor or disease tolerances of a given plant. For example; A slower growing heirloom tomato may be grafted onto a cherry tomato rootstock to improve the vigor and yield of the heirloom scion.
Some use grafting to make their gardening neighboors jealous of the great yielding veggies as well.
@Zeljko Trifunovic They know way more than just the basics!
Why u need to graft if its are same plants....????
Don't the leaves of the scion piece dry up and die?
Your dumb of course yes

When do you remove the grafting clips ?
I imagine you'd just have to do it from sight and judging if it's healed completely.
You don't. They will fall off on their own as the stem grows.
can I graft female sprouts on male tomatoes to reduce numbers of male plants?
+Zaware thanks for watching! Tomato plants actually contain both male and female reproductive parts which makes them a perfect flower. So in this case it is impossible to graft a female plant onto a male plant because they are perfect flowers.

@@zawaregaurav4806 There must have been a missunderstanding I hope.
@@luemn7691 I don't know why but they says that male plants doesn't flowers & gives fruits, that's why they removes the male plant & throw them.
Why graft while that plant can grow on its own steam ? 😳

use a large clear plastic tote for the container. This will help keep the moisture in the container.
You destroy one plan and put another one on it, why don't you keep both plants to fruit, what are you going to do with the other root part?
