Never played Lufia 1, but i did play lufia 2. I loved it so much, and not just me, my mom and uncle even loved the game. Their favorite part was the ancient cave. They both reached the ending a couple of times but never cleared it. Sadly my mom passed away not long after having the game for a few months and (this is stupid i know) to honor her i made it my mission to clear the ancient cave. I did and never touched the game ever again.
@@Ghostblock you have to play the cave enough to completely outfit everybody...if you cheat you can make EVERY floor full of monsters and chests like the occasional floor you find...very handy against the dragons who drop blue chested items...don't forget to cheat an egg sword too...invaluable later on further down...
if I was forced to play only one snes game for ever, then Lufia 2 it would be. The gameplay is nice, it is funny, it has loads of secrets, lots of items and monsters to experiment with and then there are all the minigames: The casino games with slotmachines and a very decent cardgame and the ancient cave which is a new game unto itself (especially when you unlock newgame++ mode) There is just so much to do in this game.
Another thing to add about Lufia II is that even though it's a prequel, they added a lot of new lore on top of what the first game set up. The introduction of a fifth Sinistral, a certain someone's alter ego in the form of the prophet Iris, the idea that the battle against the Sinistrals was actually a test of humanity's heart, and the extra bit of ending we got to see after the Sinistrals were defeated. And speaking of the ending, it's incredible that even though you know how it ends if you played the first game, it's still a gut-wrenching conclusion to Maxim's story. Fantastic storytelling.
From what we know in the Japanese text, they're called "Shikyoushin", which means "insane gods". Arek the Absolute by his words and actions is a neutral god tasked to be an observer and overall ruler of the gods. The Sinistrals themselves are sort of "dark gods". And the story hints that there were supposed to be "good gods" to defend the earth from the evil ones, but they were not summoned by Arek because a human with the potential to challenge the Sinistrals had been born. I believe that Erim leans more towards neutral, because her domain of "death" is a natural force in the life cycle. Which explains why she was the one chosen by Arek to relay his commands to the Sinistrals but also to adopt her alter ego and guide Maxim along his path. So yes, it expanded on the lore a LOT.
Nice. I've been keeping my eye out for a copy but MAN are they expensive. Did you ever end up playing it? If so, did you like it? Just wondering. Thanks.
@@charlieg6913 I seriously lucked out when I got my copy. It was used, but in pristine condition. The person who sold it to me obviously loved the game. lufia 2 is an amazing game, one of my all time favorites even pushing forward into newer platforms with better graphics, the gameplay and dungeon puzzles are absolutely brilliant and i would much rather play a game like lufia 2 rather than a newer age rpg with superb graphics. Sure it is rather easy as far as the combat side of the game goes, but there are more than a few puzzles that not only make you think, but stumped me as a teenager for days on end(before there were internet guides and easy access to them).
I had the same thing with the puzzels back when I was 10 years old. It was my first RPG experience. Still love it and the ending damn after finishing it years later I cried.
The opening, the Town theme music, learning about Japan's association of earthquakes with giant subterranean Catfish, being jealous that Guy was so much more strong than Max, Foamy!!! I have loved this series for a very long time. Thank you for spreading awareness of it
How did I not know about Lufia? This is awesome. To me this is 2 brand new SNES games. I'm so excited. I'm going to be starting the new year off with a bang! Thanks for the honest review.
I just finished this game and randomly found your review. I have to say this was a very well-done review. You got straight to the point, explained things perfectly, and got it all done under 6 mins. Well done, sir, I'll check out your other vids!
... Lufia 1's actually one of the JRPGs in which i feel the battle theme doesn't really get old. I mean, yeah, you hear it *A LOT*, but it's honestly one of my favorite battle themes ever. It's just so rockin' and unusual for the genre and even the game it's in. I have a lot of personal nostalgia for it and think it's colorful and has good dialogue and a nice story but it's still essentially "Dragon Warrior 2 but longer and with better graphics" when it really comes down to it. But yeah, Lufia 2 is the shit. It's a crying shame that none of the later entries in the series came even anywhere close to its level of quality, and its own 'remake' gutted so much of the game and made it a Ys clone for no reason, but it's definitely up there as a must-play RPG. Also is the Sinistral battle theme one of the best boss themes ever or what?
The battles are easy. The puzzles... the yellow/red block ones I thought were rather easy. There's a couple "Growing Plant" or "Shrub" puzzles that are "eh" that you gotta think about, and of course the sliding block puzzle, but that's optional anyways. The the battles are so easy... except for the optional win against Gades early in the game right after you get Selan in the group. Contrary to popular belief you CAN win against him, but it is hard-as-balls and you get a ridiculously powerful weapon for doing it.
And then... the rest of the game is just so easy that's it's just ridiculous. Unlike Lufia 1, you can just hold the L button on most battles and watch a glorified FMV and that's most of the battles in the game. In fact, if you get the Egg Ring and put it on Artea and have his bow... Artea one-shots everything that's not in the last dungeon. Lufia 1 had far more interesting combat, because even normal enemies were oftentimes a challenge, and most of my friends couldn't even beat the first two bosses.
Sometimes I don't feel so confident, then I remember that I am a French man who played through this English game called Lufia at 8 years old. I am lucky to live in a bi-lingual country but basically loved video games and stories so much that I taught myself English earlier than other kids to play this "Awesome story game" my 17 year old cousin had beat. I remember crying at the end cause it felt so beautiful. I can't wait to replay this and it's sequel as an adult.
I've got a android compatible plug and play ROM box coming for Christmas. I'm going to play ff1, then dragon quest 1-5, then Lufia 1+2. This video got me hype for Lufia as it's pretty much the only jrpg for snes I've never touched
most underrated game on snes . i don't think the story get's enough credit honestly, the interplay between the characters makes them stand out pretty uniquely amongst all the other RPG's out there, in my opinion.
Mannnn, when the original game came out I loved it so much. You have to find the members of your party in the world. I feel like that game is one of the best on the SNES. It definitely feels different than anything else on the system. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III are great too.
I am one of those weidos who likes Lufia 1 more than 2. I think maybe because I just absolutely adore Lufia (the character) and her story arc. Also, Lufia 1 is just so, pure, unadulterated JRPG. It doesn't hold your hand. It forces you to pay attention. In the SNES days I prefered Lufia to the Final Fantasy games...
I was fortunate to experience beating the first game before Lufia 2 was released. Stopped in a game shop, opened a magazine and saw news that Lufia 2 was set to release the following month. The surprise and hype swarmed over me that day. It was one of the best hype trains you could be on in the 90s. Lufia 2 was a whole-new-level exciting when you had so much untapped mystery around Maxim and his party. Lufia 1 was an amazing appetizer. Would love if developers could do these reverse prequels more often. It's a very fun ride to be on when the first game builds you up.
As a young stupid child I didn’t understand starting in medias res and was upset from the intro because I thought I was playing someone else’s file and couldn’t start my own, so I had my mom return the rental 😩
Lufia will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a young child, perhaps 5-7, I was able to play with a friends gameboy some Final Fantasy game, and it turns out that's when I realized I loved RPGs. I didn't have a gameboy but I did have a SNES and Lufia was the first RPG I've ever bought. I remember I had fond memories playing that game :) Didn't think anyone remembered it.
I think the thing that frustrated me the most about the Lufia games was the pattern of "head to village, solve village's problem" done basically over and over and over. I guess that's the "episodic" nature of the game's story. It basically just felt like a series of side quests that didn't really mean anything for most of the game. I enjoyed Lufia 2 especially when it came out and I was much younger, but now, I pretty much just play up to the point where I get to the ancient cave, grind the heck out of that, and then call it quits.
hey what about the monster system! thats half the fun! you get to discover these different creatures and feed them items and they can evolve! and each evolution give each creature different abilities its awesome
Having played Lufia 2, it's impossible to play Lufia 1. I love Lufia 2 because it has a bit of everything, it has Zelda puzzles, Dragon Balls, Pokemons, Limit Breaks, New Game+.
I played lufia 2 and then 1 back to back in that order. One game does not set expectations for all games for me. Sure Chrono Trigger is amazing but I still like mystic quest.
@@allenyates3469 Yeah lol 5yo ago, what I meant was that after playing Lufia 2 first, it's hard to play Lufia 1 because of the mechanics downgrade. It's like playting the same game but it's worse. I usualy play different games but in that case I'll replay Lufia 2 before playing 1 again. Also not a big fan of Mystic Quest, but CT is my favorite of all time.
I played both Lufia 1 & 2 when they were fairly new games. They completely changed my view of what stories and endings could be in ANY game, ESPECIALLY for cartridge based games. For that alone, I sing the praises of both these games to this day, and still occasionally revisit them. While they're not perfect, they're absolutely timeless and thoroughly enjoyable by ANYONE who enjoys RPGs or a great story.
I do love your short, sweet, and straight to the point reviews man. I played through most of Lufia 1 once on an emulator and, well... it just burned me out. What made me quit was when I loaded a Lufia 2 rom and was astounded how much they improved upon that game over it's predecessor. I probably should have just started playing that game, but I was under the impression it was a sequel rather than a pre-sequel.
Great review! Completely agree with all your points. The second Lufia game was fantastic and the level 99 dungeon was a brilliant addition. One of the best RPG's on the system after the perfect Chrono Trigger & Terranigma.
2 things; First, I love your review of the Lufia series on the Snes. Second, the Ancient cave is a feature in all of the Lufia games- the 2 on the snes, the gbc game, and the gba game. It's a primary dungeon in every game.
Haha i bought this game for 12$ at a local game shop. I thought i had gotten a prepayed copy and was at the final boss and felt bad restarting the file. They got me good lol
Haven't played these yet, but I have played Lufia TLR on gbc, and I liked it. Something I immediately noticed is that it seems like the randomized dungeon layouts that started with the ancient cave in Lufia 2 and continued on in this game could have heavily inspired the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games.
Not many people played Lufia TLR ,its a good game but people always complaint about the random dungeon,I personally find it repetitive but still fun to play.
+LimeC Roguelike dungeons were featured on 2 Chunsoft games before Lufia 2 did it, just look at the Mystery Dungeon series (not Pokemon Mystery Dungeon mind you). Torneko's Great Adventure for instance was done almost 2 years before Neverland finished Lufia 2. What I will note is that the composer for Pokemon MD that did Sinister Woods bgm may have been more than influenced by the cave theme on Lufia 2 something that has bugged for almost a decade now.
lufia tlr was an enjoyable game and honestly i consider my 2nd fav only behind which is my fav lufia game... the fortress of doom. lufia 2 is a good game but the first game holds a lot that makes it stand as my fav lufia game plus it can be challenging if u dont overlevel your group or play the initial style instead of retry/continue which gives u the 4x exp and gold.
Lufia 2 is awesome. But I still awesome recommend that a gamer plays the first game before it. It just enhances the whole experience. However, if you only care to play one game, yes, Lufia 2 is easily superior. And one of the most underrated RPGs on a console packed with great ones.
I never played Lufia 2 back when I was playing snes rpgs, I got kind of burnt out of those games for a long time and never bothered. I recently finally played through lufia 2. It's probably my favourite jrpg of all time now. Those zelda style dungeon puzzles are great. It adds some much needed gameplay to a genre that lacks it at points. And, I know it always gets talked about, but the ancient cave is a pretty neat implementation of a roguelike. It'd be cool to see some of those ideas developed into a standalone roguelike. Combined with some kind of diablo like item system, the blue chest, deeper runs mechanic would be pretty fun.
I don't know we there u left this out or don't know it exists but there is actually a lufia game for the gbc and it is very good and extremely unique with a nine member party system and all dungeons being random it is great fun and was recently put on the eshop so if you have a 3ds have at it
I have a lot of love for Lufia 1. Part 2 is objectively the better game, but if I had to pull one down to play, it's gonna be the first. It's a short, sweet, JRPG experience.
Lufia 2 was the first RPG I've ever played and I still adore it 25 years later. Even when I didn't quite understand certain RPG elements when I was 6, I still got more than halfway through the game with just base weapons and armor. Then later when I got more familiar with certain RPG mechanics, I blazed through the entire game. Still yet to be the Jelly boss in the ancient cave and the egg dragon, but it will happen one of these days.
I played this back then and that Ancient Cave and the concept behind it is still one of the best ideas I remember back of that time. I never completed it, but thats ok.
It was better than some of the english translated RPGs back in the day once you had played the other good ones. I loved the graphics. It was very simple though and repetitive. I had to estimate how long it would take from one end of the screen to the other as i only had limited time to play sometimes. And you just knew that although you could see your destination that the random battles would make it take 30 mins!
Lufia 2 is a good 16 bit gem. Some of my favorite music on the SNES. Thanks for posting. But if you’ve figured out how to beat gades there is nothing that can stop you.
Lufia II had some of the most challenging puzzles in video games. I tore my hair out as a kid figuring some of them out. Aside from that, I agree that Lufia II was pretty easy. A solid review, man.
Lufia 1's intro song, Final Fantasy (Prelude), Super Ninja Boy (Peace Boom) & Zelda (fairy fountain). Best songs on the SNES. Have been in my head since my childhood.
Bro the Lufia 2 ending got me crying as a teenager, the two games creates such a strong character development and makes u bond to them aaaaaa and easy? Bro wtf
Lufia 2 is such a great game, I wish more people knew about it. It tends to get left out of the conversation when people list the best RPG's of the SNES era. The mechanics in it are interesting, I like the way they handled the item system and the battle system. Feeding items to your capsule monsters to get them to evolve was so much fun as a kid. Keep in mind this was BEFORE Pokemon was ever a thing. Lufia 2 is much better than Lufia 1, it's still worth playing though today imo. If you re-play Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger, this game is right up there with those imo
4:54 Another huge plus [Lufia 2] has for it is the soundtrack *Lufia 1's boss battle theme starts playing* I do agree with the statement, but that was a strange choice of music...
Playing Lunar Blue Star (Sega CD) & Phantasy Star IV. These are amazing RPGs and they are not even on SNES. Would love to see a review on those bad boys
Oh yeah, and don't forget the hardest puzzle ever of any video game. I spent hours trying to get that dragon egg. No joke. Hours just staring at the screen and playing the puzzle. I even had a nightmare about it that night or the following night. I lost sleep over it. This was when the internet was still in it's infancy. One day I'll conquer that puzzle without a walkthrough.
This might be the first jrpg I ever beat. The music and graphics are some of the best on the snes given that it was such a late release. It was also the only jrpg I've ever seen to get a Dutch translation complete with a guidebook and everything.
I thought i was the only one who prefered lufia1 to 2. all you need is to improve 1's graphics and fix/cut/ remake some annoying quests and put a map of the world or dungeons so that you can explore better
started playing lufia about 7 months ago and made it to the bridge portion and I put it down. I really want to start lufia 2 so I just started from my save file and im going to finish this game, wish me luck!
I can see that. Even back in the day Lufia wasn't exactly a very impressive jrpg. The second one wasn't the best out there either but it was a lot better that's for sure.
I missed out on Lufia 2 when I owned an SNES. But I played it as an emulator ROM and it quickly became one of my favorite SNES RPGs - the puzzles really made the game, and the dialogue was really interesting and different compared to the G-rated script of most SNES games. Highly recommended!
You left out the Pet Monsters and the Casino. Back then I loved the pet monsters. Always waited for their next evolution and spent quite some time playing Black Jack of the available card games. Still a good review and superb channel. Thanks for your work.
+SNES drunk Hey,great job for making thus review, i am a fan of lufia games since its simple jrpg with puzzles and great storyline.i agree with your review, the first lufia is really irritating since random battle like every 5 steps but in the second Lufia they actually know there problem and solve it in a fantastic way,Thanks again for the review, you just got a sub :)
Randomly renting this from blockbuster, I had no idea what to expect. So when the plot twist happened I was totally caught off guard and really able to enjoy the story.
A friend of mine had Lufia and she looked liked like the Elf Archer from the first game. I loved Lufia back in the day, and once I beat it, I used the Game Genie to alter how much stat boost potions games and would make myself superhuman early on. But there was a problem. My stats were too high when facing the Knight I had to lose to early on, and it was taking forever to go down to 1 HP. I erased the game and didn't boost stats until after that fight.
Attacking enemy groups isn't unique; Dragon Warrior 3 and 4 also had the same mechanic. The first Final Fantasy needed you to target specific enemies, and if one died before another character who targeted it had attacked it, that character would miss.
Just sub’d and really enjoy your content. Might I request a video on Tecmo’s Secret of the Stars? Really dug it as a kid but of course the million dollar question is, is it still worth playing?
Never played Lufia 1, but i did play lufia 2. I loved it so much, and not just me, my mom and uncle even loved the game. Their favorite part was the ancient cave. Sadly my mom passed away not long after having the game for a few months and (this is stupid i know) to honor her i made it my mission to clear the ancient cave. That doesn't sound stupid at all! Thats a cool way of honoring her. I never fully cleared the ancient cave myself.

dragonballs(egg) also in lufia 1
I was going to say the same. How can you omit the pet mechanics? It was my favorite aspect in the whole game.
Yea the pet mechanism saves the monotony
Thanks for posting this comment. Now I know not to waste my time watching this video or playing this game

Lufia 2 is the best soundtrack on SNES hands down. Also probably a top 10 game for SNES too.
yes I agree. the soundtrack is dope af
I'd say that Terranigma has a better score, but I agree that Lufia 2's soundtrack is amazing.
Lufia 1 hands down. Can't beat that intro song.
Aidenn Queen to me too, the story of love and betrayal with hope was amazing.
to each their own but i wouldnt say best soundtrack on snes. i liked lufia 1 soundtrack more than lufia 2's
I like them both, but Lufia 2 is much better. Every time I play it, I spend like 20-30 hours on the Ancient Cave alone...it's so addicting.
I have to get back into it. Didn't get that far but liked it.
100 bucks says Robbie didn't get back into it.
Easy my ass. The puzzles were hard as hell. Zelda was a cake walk. Ask anyone who played that game about the yellow/red block puzzle.

I love Lufia 2 because it has a bit of everything, it has Zelda puzzles, Dragon Balls, Pokemons, Limit Breaks, New Game+.
...Casio stuff with Blackjack and Hookers (not even kidding)...
This is one my favorite games ever. It’s a shame it’s not popular
The view of enemies like in the Mother games is cool and I think more games should have it I think.
The Lufia series is top 10 in the snes rpg category.
What I will note is that the composer for Pokemon MD that did Sinister Woods bgm may have been more than influenced by the cave theme on Lufia 2 something that has bugged for almost a decade now.
lufia tlr was an enjoyable game and honestly i consider my 2nd fav only behind which is my fav lufia game... the fortress of doom. lufia 2 is a good game but the first game holds a lot that makes it stand as my fav lufia game plus it can be challenging if u dont overlevel your group or play the initial style instead of retry/continue which gives u the 4x exp and gold.
nope, the Mystery Dungeon series is way older than Lufia 2 and it was inspired by Rogue and similar western games, as it's a roguelike.
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is pretty good, I added it to my snes mini
I'm bout to do the same.
Probably would recommend those new to Lufia should play II and then go back and play I...even though II was the better presentation. Great review.
Lufia 2 is awesome. But I still awesome recommend that a gamer plays the first game before it. It just enhances the whole experience. However, if you only care to play one game, yes, Lufia 2 is easily superior. And one of the most underrated RPGs on a console packed with great ones.
I love all 5 lufia games I've played. Takes me back to my childhood.
i second both of those thoughts. really dig your vids. thanks for taking the time to post them.
I have this game on my Handy.
I love this game
love these games both! very much. also the sentece 'i wont let you take me drunk' (0:23) is hilarious :D
Thanks for doing all these review. I spend all day watching it. 😄
Lufia 2 was the last snes game I bought. the pal version released sometime in 1997. *takes massive nostalgia hit*
Lufia 2 was my first jRPG after Mystic Quest. It felt brutally hard at the time and the ending was bitter sweet.
I played this back then and that Ancient Cave and the concept behind it is still one of the best ideas I remember back of that time. I never completed it, but thats ok.
0:26 music - now I know where 50 cent got his inspiration for "You Don't Know" =D
I absolutely loved the Lufia games.
Greatest things of Lufia: Mimic, Mimicker, Red Core, Green Core, No Core.
You only get it if you played.
Yes, and an ambush from 2 gold dragons in 98 floor xD
@@SDekar cheat egg sword and HARDBOILED...if they don't die they are screwed...
Lufia II had some of the most challenging puzzles in video games. I tore my hair out as a kid figuring some of them out. Aside from that, I agree that Lufia II was pretty easy. A solid review, man.
Well, u mean history is pretty easy. The 2 main secret bosses arn't so easy =)
I remember renting Lufia 2 from blockbuster when i was a kid. I loved it! Would love to buy a copy, but sells for so much on amazon!
Lufia 1's intro song, Final Fantasy (Prelude), Super Ninja Boy (Peace Boom) & Zelda (fairy fountain). Best songs on the SNES. Have been in my head since my childhood.
I liked monster raising part of the game so cool.
4:54 Another huge plus [Lufia 2] has for it is the soundtrack
*Lufia 1's boss battle theme starts playing*
I do agree with the statement, but that was a strange choice of music...
The sinistral battle theme is still one of the best theme song on the snes ever
Playing Lunar Blue Star (Sega CD) & Phantasy Star IV. These are amazing RPGs and they are not even on SNES. Would love to see a review on those bad boys
Oh yeah, and don't forget the hardest puzzle ever of any video game. I spent hours trying to get that dragon egg. No joke. Hours just staring at the screen and playing the puzzle. I even had a nightmare about it that night or the following night. I lost sleep over it. This was when the internet was still in it's infancy.
One day I'll conquer that puzzle without a walkthrough.
Sorry for your loss. I'm sure your mother is happy that you think about her and finished the game on her behave.
Sunk lots of time into the first lufia and loved it. Remember when i found the dragon sword after a ramdom fight at first cave
This might be the first jrpg I ever beat. The music and graphics are some of the best on the snes given that it was such a late release. It was also the only jrpg I've ever seen to get a Dutch translation complete with a guidebook and everything.
Clearly I loved Lufia 1 more than you haha to me Lufia 1&2 are my favorites RPGs ever after Chrono, FF4 and Suikoden 2, on par with FF6 to me
I thought i was the only one who prefered lufia1 to 2. all you need is to improve 1's graphics and fix/cut/ remake some annoying quests and put a map of the world or dungeons so that you can explore better
I just found this game for $3.00 at a goodwill.
started playing lufia about 7 months ago and made it to the bridge portion and I put it down.
This is one of my favorite RPG’s on the SNES. Beat it twice
Probably my favorite SNES RPG next to Earthbound. I just like puzzles...
You left out the Pet Monsters and the Casino. Back then I loved the pet monsters. Always waited for their next evolution and spent quite some time playing Black Jack of the available card games.
Still a good review and superb channel. Thanks for your work.
Love this game.
Cool review! Well made and very informative!
+Chaser Thanks Chaser
Lufia 1 & 2 are awesome, as a kid. through an adults eyes, i can see the flaws, but gave me many good times and thats all that counts to me as a kid.
Randomly renting this from blockbuster, I had no idea what to expect. So when the plot twist happened I was totally caught off guard and really able to enjoy the story.
It's definitely got a Dragon Warrior vibe, with some FF elements mixed in
Lufia 2 is my favorite RPG in the SNES by far.
Without a dout for me the best JRPG EVER! This one and the 1st one!
I loved this game growing up!
Have you ever tried eating fried newt?
What a great game. I miss the time when you still had epic games like this to review. The library is kind of well explored already.
There's actually a Lifia 3 on the Game Boy Color. And there's a side story on the game boy advance. Not to mention the Lufia 2 remake on the ds.
The first Final Fantasy needed you to target specific enemies, and if one died before another character who targeted it had attacked it, that character would miss.
lufia 2 was my intro to rp gaming, loved it.
It's weird to see this video on 2019, you've got so far.
It's still great by my standards
Just sub’d and really enjoy your content. Might I request a video on Tecmo’s Secret of the Stars? Really dug it as a kid but of course the million dollar question is, is it still worth playing?
That one is coming eventually, that game has one of the worst translations I've ever seen. It's "all your base" level bad.
