- This is the fourth Boeing B-52H Stratofortress arriving in the UK from Barksdale Air Force Base, a United States Air Force (USAF) base in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, in northwest Louisiana. The host unit at Barksdale is the 2nd Bomb Wing (2 BW), the oldest bomb wing in the U.S. Air Force. It is assigned to the Air Force Global Strike Command's (AFGSC) Eighth Air Force (8 AF), the "Mighty Eighth). The callsign was ROPE31 and was the 83rd B-52 to arrive at Fairford and if we got this right, the first time this serial number has arrived here too.
The base was established in 1932 as Barksdale Field, named for World War I aviator and test pilot Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale (1896-1926).
With its Eight Pratt & Whitney (yes EIGHT!), the B-52 is a long-range, heavy bomber that can perform a variety of missions. The bomber is capable of flying at high subsonic speeds at altitudes up to 50,000 feet (15,166.6 meters). It can carry nuclear or precision guided conventional ordnance with worldwide precision navigation capability.
For more than 40 years B-52 Stratofortresses have been the backbone of the manned strategic bomber force for the United States. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory. This includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions. Updated with modern technology the B-52 will be capable of delivering the full complement of joint developed weapons and will continue into the 21st century as an important element of our nation's defenses. Current engineering analyses show the B-52's life span to extend beyond the year 2040.
The B-52A first flew in 1954, and the B model entered service in 1955. A total of 744 B-52s were built with the last, a B-52H, delivered in October 1962. The first of 102 B-52H's was delivered to Strategic Air Command in May 1961. The H model can carry up to 20 air launched cruise missiles. In addition, it can carry the conventional cruise missile that was launched in several contingencies during the 1990s, starting with Operation Desert Storm and culminating with Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The aircraft's flexibility was evident in Operation Desert Storm and again during Operation Allied Force. B-52s struck wide-area troop concentrations, fixed installations and bunkers, and decimated the morale of Iraq's Republican Guard. From Sept. 2 to 3, 1996, two B-52H's struck Baghdad power stations and communications facilities with 13 AGM-86C conventional air launched cruise missiles, or CALCMs, as part of Operation Desert Strike. At that time, this was the longest distance flown for a combat mission involving a 34-hour, 16,000 statute mile round trip from Barksdale Air Force Base, La.
In 2001, the B-52 contributed to the success in Operation Enduring Freedom, providing the ability to loiter high above the battlefield and provide close air support through the use of precision guided munitions.

Oii oiii Ladies gents and teddy bears. Isn’t this just an absolute classic. Did you know the first initial development started life out with a Turboprop-powered project? Did you know also that Convair were running in with their prototype proposal as the Convair XB-60? In the end, it was the Boeing YB-52 that won the flight.
I think the original seating arrangement wasn't tandem too. I believe it was when the B-52 still had the Y designation.
Beautiful. Love the vehicle with yellow flashing light just in case you miss the B-52.
Thank you for standing out in the cold to obtain this great footage. So people like myself can share in the moment 👍
This is what we do. You are welcome Oohh yeah
That landing was impressive- training new Buff pilots to get it right must be a little hairy.
Very impressive indeed. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that these beauties and their crew will protect us in the hour of need. 🆘
A rare sight to behold! Fantastic, very special footage of this magnificent, often elusive aircraft. Thank you Ted for making the trip to bring us this. ❤
Oii Oii Margo, this was worth the trip. Such a spectacular, huge aircraft
I was fortunate enough to work on parts of this beautiful beast in a back shop at Tinker A.F.B. Oklahoma.
I was fortunate to work on NASA's Balls Eight in Edwards. Nothing exciting, just changing the parachutes. But the history of that ship was incredible!
Thank you for your service
Absolutely stunning to see a B-52H Stratofortress land 😊
Sure is and lucky to catch 2 of them over the 2 days
@TedConingsby my goodness that is amazing 😎
That plane can scream. What a beautiful aircraft
What an incredible aircraft the B-52 is. So iconic and the sheer size is impressive and with a perfect landing..
Oii oiii Jimmy it sure is
What a huge beast, it looked massive 2 miles out😂 you don’t get to see these every day, so thank you Nikos for driving in those misty conditions for 3 hrs to get this for us ❤🫡
Well said Captain A it's true were lucking we caught it live on the TCS channel 😊👏👏🥰
Oii oiii Captain A thanks man. It was worth it
A treat for the eyes and the ears. The immense wingspan of these B52s still takes some believing. Excellent footage once again Nikos. It was a good hunch to go to Fairford Ted
❤
Oii Oii Si these were so awesome to see
What a beautiful Bird!!! Thank you for a great channel!!!!
You’re most welcome
I went TDY with my B-52 to Mildenhall in the late 70's. Loved it! The SR,-71's were there then.
What a Plane BEAUTIFUL !!!!
That’s amazing piece of machinery
I remember working near Harrogate c1979 and a B52 which had just done a fly-past over Menwith Hill flew over us at a ridiculously low height. It was like an eclipse. Stunning.
A wonderful fete of engineering. She will be in service still before the last pilots are born, incredible Great footage Ted and Nikos🫡
Oii oiii Davey thank you so much
Having been a keen military aviation "watcher" ever since my 1st visit to RAF Donna Nook in 1979, & as someone who's always looking to the skies, I simply still marvel at this one aircraft, the iconic B-52 "Buff"! How these mighty birds fly still defies me. Simply incredible!!
Well done Ted & Nikos, great footage. Perhaps we need a B-52 emoji?
Oii oiii Colin thank you. It is an amazing aircraft and totally forgot about it having 8 engines! Sounds amazing Youknowhowiriz
An aircraft so large that the front wheels retract in opposite directions 🤔 to fit within fuselage. That is great footage and no denying it. What a mamouth machine. Those engines are blisteringly powerful. So love this today. The info you give is Great stuff.. Can always rely on the TCS too bring rare sights to my phone.
Nicely done Ted and Nikos. You never fail too surprise 😮
Oii oiii Dan 🤙🏼 Forgot that this huge bomber has 8 engines! What a sound
Got a subscribe from me, thanks for sharing this with us all! Cheers Tony.
Thanks
Thanks Dan for the super
Thanks,Ted, for more great entertainment!!
You’re most welcome
My love and thanks to the crew. ❤🇺🇸🇬🇧❤
Another excellent video of the legendary B-52. It will be almost 100 years old by the time it's retired. It will outlive us all. 7:50 to 8:30 is a great side view of the bomber. 👍🏻
Oii oiii
and the beautiful english misty winter landscape...
I've never seen one.........thank you
What a beast of a plane!
I enjoyed the video.
thank u 4 that....id forgotten just how beautiful this a/c was....
I used to fish near Fairford. They come in directly overhead.
And if you were the opposite side of the base on another lake, they'd take off directly overhead.!!!
The ground shock, i swear the lake rippled, and that nosie deafening, but the worst thing about them was the dirty black soot trail they left behind..
They've just been fitted with new turbines ,so that soots soon to be a thing of the past..
The best incoming you'd ever want to see, though, isn't the B52. You had a special day if it was a B2 spirit ,there's something very cool about looking up at one landing, very cool.¡!
Was at Southend airport for an engine test for the Vulcan. Wow. Stationery, it's mind boggling how much energy is involved.
My sister worked in Nice ville, Fla when the BUFFS were at Eglin AFB. She said you could feel them coming.
Last year when ya'll had the NATO military get together I was reading some chats and some Viet Nam Vets added their comments. They said in the middle of a battle when they and the Viet Cong heard the BUFFS coming the VC just disappeared.
Stunning camera work, thank you Nikos
Thank you Oohhhh yeah
That bear marching made me laugh out loud, people are looking at me.
Love these aircraft always room in my back garden for one!!!!!!.... Well the AIR FIX VERSION ANYWAY😂
Thanks guys!
Scha-weet! footage as always Ted!
Grandpa Buff is a sight to behold. A living legend. If you ever get a chance to see one in person it's stunning. Looking up into it's bomb bays is like standing below a 3 story warehouse.
Fairford offers up another treat with its visitors..... casually stepping over what it represents, the B52 is certainly an aeroplane to "marvel" as it keeps pushing the normal conventions of service life-span.
Oii Oii Jonathan. It certainly was a really good treat to see these
Seen a B52 fly a couple of times now & it still amazes me lf how big it is & how it gets off the ground!! The last time i saw one in the air was at RIAT last year where it took off & was in the hold for like 2 hours before it came in to display. Even though on landing (i found out later) it was crabbing along the runway & took out some runway lights
A comment for the algorithm - Beautiful photography! And thank you!
Thank you
what a sight , I did hear them and saw them pass over on their way to Fairford but seeing it coming into land is something very special , amazing how big they are , did not know they had jockey wheels on the end of the wings , but understandable why , Thank you
Incredible aircraft. Amazing to think it is still in service and was built closer to the Wright Flyer than the present day!
One legendary ultra 😎 aircraft old school is the best and built to LAST 💥💥💥💥💨💨💨💨 This fine lady you don't want to mess with her or there's trouble ahead 🤩🙌
Hunch paid off Nikos @TedConingsby 👍👍
Right place, right time, well done👏😍
Oii oiii Julie it sure did
I’m no aircraft geek but that’s stunning … I can’t get over the wingspan
Oiii oiiii 🤙🏼it is indeed stunning and the Wingspan is larger than the length of the actual aircraft! 185ft against 159ft! Incredible
@@TedConingsby I used to work at Gatwick and watching the A380 take off is amazing but this tops that .
Thank you .
Perfect landing
Big plane.big fun.
Beautiful ❤️
very impressive
When „four engine taxi“ is saving fuel 😂 NOOICE!
Heavy and light metal (U2) at Fairford. Thanks Nikos
You’re most welcome EP
Excellent landing , love her screams and what an incredible flying beast ♥️
Being from a town that used to house the giant birds of the past and go out to the flight line and watch them take off and land it's just amazing they are
Here come the Cavalry!
What a beast...😊
That is an amazing video Nikos
Thank you
Love that plane! Had a squadron of those when stationed in the South Pacific. Air Force... Aim High!🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
So freakin cool !
Awesome 😎
In the 1960` s my sister lived close to RAF Wethersfield airbase, she told me about huge planes that flew over her house, it was during the Vietnam war, I was in her garden when she ran in doors with her kids, a plane flew so low over her house to land, I thought it would take her roof off, it was ear splitting and filled the sky.
My love shack - b-52 comment has vanished but you get the idea❤️
Deployed to RAF Fairford, back in the day for mine laying training.
Awesome.
Amazing
Amazing footage 👏
Very very good video sir.
I can not wait for my first time tourism visit. To UK if alive still this coming April 2025
Buff is back....
just WOW !!
Oii oiii Fred Ted
Aim HIGH 👍🇺🇸
Amazing footage mate, what a beast of a thing. Do we know if there all standing by here or transferring to join rest in Middle Eastern bases. See you in the next one.
Oii oiii thank you John, as a fun military aviation channel, we don’t disclose deployment details. We will just enjoy them while they are here
I see em all the time flying over I-20 here in Louisiana@Bossier City,La.Home of the B 52's Aka BUFF'S @ Barksdale Airforce Base
a fantasic looking plane.
Gonna go back for my first visit to Thailand since 1982 and 83 this coming Jan 2025
That bird is my age!
I believe they made some up-to-date improvements to it since then.
Looked like good land to me
Like nothing else on earth.
It'll be interesting to see them come here once they get the Rolls Royce engines fitted.
The RR engines won’t start😂
It’s a wonder it gets into the air. It would be a bit like Billy Bunter doing the Pole Vault.
I wonder what the deflection of the wingtips is between on the ground and in cruise?
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇬🇧🇬🇧💪
I wonder if Ted knows Flat Eric?
He’s a good mate of mine
Beautiful beast!!! MAGA!!!

🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
How do you know when the b-52's are arriving or going?
It’s a mix of pot luck and gut feeling Oohhhh yeah
💪🏽🇬🇧👍🏽
So what happened to the parachute?
Oii oiii 🤙🏼once jettisoned, the chute recovery team will collect it, pack it and eventually reinstall it back in the aircraft
Oiii oiii Ellesee
Why no flare on touchdown I wonder
Oii Oii this is a good question. So you’ve noticed the B-52 lands pretty much horizontally and this is all down to the B-52s high angle of incidence on its large wings. The B-52s extreme high angle of incidence which is optimised for its high altitudes in flight. So when the B-52 is on approach to land and configured with its wing flaps deployed, that same high angle of incidence provides optimum lift with the aircraft in a negative deck angle on final with the nose looking low. This angle is pretty much parallel and level when it lands. It’s kind of its own way of the flare
I’ll take the B1-b lancer over that.. carries more and it’s supersonic 🔥🔥
That was the perfect landing good pilot him top man
What’s it doing here?
Oii oiii, RAF FAIRFORD is a USAF base and it is one few bases that can accommodate B-52s here in the UK
B52's would use USAF base Alconbury in the 1960's during the "cold war" .
I am looking forward also to my return visit in Israel and Thailand and Japan as former us navy 7th fleet us Pacific command member in my duty yrs in us navy 1982 to 84
oy oy savaloy
