  • Frustrated at not seeing the improvement to drawing that should happen from all the practice you do? The problem may not be wjhat you are doing, but what you are neglecting. About 80% of the total drawing practice is so often not recognised for what it is, and therefore not focussed on at all. Sadly, it is the most crucial element of the whole drawing process, so it is neglected at great cost to our drawing results. This video is a valuable refocus that may be the great leap forward you've been looking for in your drawing!

If I can find some to take photos of, they’d be a great subject

Alright, Stephen, I am up for the work. I am thinking of little kids...they draw what they are thinking and then say
' vwallah '. And, yeah, it works. Courage!!!!

Sadly, really impressive early drawings all begin to look the same as they see others drawing what are more symbols for the objects and mistakenly think that’s the right way. All the best with it, and always find the fun. 😀

Thanks, Stephen. 80% is a useful rule to follow. And for me the largest chunk of that 80% is composition, a subject you've covered with your usual skill.

I'm watching your videos inbetween sketching sessions and they're very inspiring. I have a question. You say that we can do exercises to improve, what kind of exercises can i do to train my brain to see what's there instead of what it thinks it's there? That's what I struggle the most with, understanding what's important and actually see the true shapes. Thank you!

I think the best thing is to concentrate on critiquing what you’ve drawn to see where your observation is lacking. This focus will guide your observation better with the next drawing, and so on. 😀

Not a subject I’ve really tackled. But I’ll see what I can do. After I’ve done shop window reflections 😆

This is a very encouraging video! Taking that moment or two to observe and consider the subject before starting drawing really is a huge help. And the best part? My marks look significantly more confident, and the resulting drawing is that much better.
