  • Frustrated by lack of drawing improvement? Practice need not necessarily produce improvement. But this approach to learning to draw may be just the counterintuitive way you will see real change happen for the better with your developing drawing skills.

yes this sounds like the answer to my question on your recent live feed on " how to go deeper"
    1. approach my cycle with intent like, I want to get 3 different looking trees in a pic
    2. practice effects of that nature for say 1/2 an hour
    3. have a cuppa
    4. come back and look at the results. ( do they look like the trees referenced? do they look like they are different from ea other??? )
    --------------------------------------
try same trees in different lighting, closer further away for next cycle
As I had no idea of how to be a student through 2 countries and 5 schools, this has been a great help. I have been poking along for 7 years with art of various mediums hoping my efforts would lead me somewhere. Nope. But then I found your vids and I have focus and a road map. Thank you for your generosity of sharing and teaching Stephen.

Wisdom! As I was watching your video, I realized I could listen to it and practice some drawing exercises. Thank you!

@@stephentraversart I have been. 😀 I started with this video and still continuing. (In fact, I probably practiced a little too long today and didn't paint on the project I was supposed to be working on. Lol.)

I believe one reason why it may take long time for us to draw something is because we are not actually drawing the object we observe but copying it, i.e. observing details instead of identifying shapes and forms etc and then draw those.
One way to find out if this is the case is to try draw the object from a different angle/perspective. If you are not able to do this, then you are probably copying instead of drawing. The way to fix this is to go back to the basic and practice the fundamentals: line, shape, form, value, texture etc.

This is such a great video for beginners!
I'm sometimes so consumed with getting to the destination that I don't take the time to slow and simplify my process and to make the most of my learning. This week, I'm going to try to be a lot more intentional in my learning and not judging myself by comparison to much more practised artists.

Sounds like a great mindset to adopt. All the best using it with your drawing 😀

I appreciate the points you’re making about drawing and learning cycles. It would be very useful for the viewers to see examples say for instance of three 30 min attempts to draw a particular tree, the drawing cycles within a week. The first drawing cycle would be the most basic and/or show the common mistake that was made, e.g. the trunk doesn’t decrease in width accurately. Second cycle would fix that issue and the third cycle would include other branches with some leaves added. What I’m not certain about is how those drawing cycles parallel or are different from learning cycles? Or are you using them interchangeably? I think adding some estimated times or recommended time spent on each drawing cycle based on your expertise, would help when it comes to try to trim time spent by evaluating and correcting as the drawings progress. I’m a slow drawer myself and would like to become better and in less time than it’s currently taking! Thanks in advance for your insights 😊

The drawing cycle IS the learning cycle - which is why it is important to organise a productive learning cycle especially at the start. It’s hard for me to draw line a beginner for examples - but I do have tree videos which illustrate common mistakes. You’ll find them on my trees playlist. Thanks for your questions 😀
