I've seen several videos of UA-camrs unboxing Bry's mystery boxes. Nothing but absolute drek. The only way the people will be able to get close to the amount of money back is if they put these in mystery boxes of their own.
I bought a mystery box from him a while back. Underwhelmed with the 2 slabs I received. His listed value on both of them were waaayyy off. I'm talking like 50% difference on both. So that was my first and last time rolling the dice there.
Seems like Bry’s Comics might have unintentionally given itself a self-inflicted wound to their reputation with these mystery box slabs. Hopefully they’ll learn not to off load unwanted slabs like this again and further damage their name in the minds of future potential customers. A bad rep can last a long time in this business.
Not big on Mystery boxes myself. My thing is, if it was gold, it wouldn't be a mystery to everyone. And it seems that most modern mystery boxes, such as ComicTom's, are filled primarily with cover variants that may or may not give you a return on investment. Some vendors slap ANYthing in a slab because it gives the appearance of instant value, especially if it's graded at a 9.8. But clearly, even a slabbed 9.8 can be worthless if it's not a book that holds any value to begin with.
Holy Moley! 2 slabbed copies of Aero (who?) & Spider Girls (is that a thing?)! :D Sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh. Thanks for continuing to try mystery boxes, so the rest of the comic collecting community doesn't have to. Great content as always
I saw Bry’s video of that massive purchase. The guy that sold the collection slabbed everything! I determined it wasn’t worth the chance because I didn’t recognize a lot of the slabs he was showing. It was a clever sales pitch move to sale as raffle mystery boxes because it would have taken him forever to sell them one by one. Sadly not every slab as any true value. At least you didn’t blow a ton of money Jim. I witnessed people losing 1000 dollars and more at casinos! I like your gamble better.
Bry has decent prices on the slabs he sells at his site, but I've never purchased one of his mystery boxes (or any mystery box, for that matter). It seems like there is some potential there to get most of your money back, but like you said, it could be a while until that happens.
Bry bought 1000 slabs for $83k including the three big books in the deal. So he made $17k gross. Before he sent those boxes out he did the raffle computer thingy and showed who won those three big books.
Mystery boxes are a incredible gamble I am always not willing to take. I would rather take my money and buy a book that I really want instead of wishing for that great book.
Precisely. You just "won" the mystery box game by not playing. Mystery boxes play off greed and a willingness to get more than you pay for, despite how it would harm others.
I was so close to pulling trigger on these mystery boxes when it got down to 75 remaining. I got distracted and by the time I got back to it it was sold out. After seeing your video and a handful of other shows I'm glad I missed out. Although if nothing else it was great content plus it was like plying the lottery.
I purchased 2 boxes. No duplicates and ended up with 3 books. All of the FMV info was correct after checking ,myself and was almost double what the boxes cost me. None of the books I will keep. I had fun with it.
Ii was on the fence about getting one of these, procrastinated, and missed out. I am GLAD that I waffled and took too long. All I have seen so far have pretty much sucked. Values based off a last sale 3or 4 years ago, stuff with one recent sale, no history....bleh, sucked.
Deadpool 1:50 he said $500 but obviously it never sold so enjoy this is why I don’t do mystery boxes. I got used once never again. That Deadpool you be lucky to get $125
If that Deadpool book has no sales data six years after it's debut, it's because nobody wants it, IMO. This is now more than a few mystery box unboxings that I've seen on YT where buyers are scratching their head over what they bought. I would consider that the money used to buy these books might have been better spent on Silver or Bronze age books that have stood the test of time and are sought after. Instead, you have new books you can't read or enjoy and that you likely would not have bought yourself. Still, I can understand the thought of getting something fantastic but the reality is far different. Best to all.
If you got two of the same books in two boxes how many others got the same? It seems like this guy was selling bulk instead of bundle. If your looking for fun great mystery boxes check out Black Cape Comics 25, 50, or 100 boxes. Guarantee money and great reading.
That is why I don't buy mystery boxes cause I have brought a few last year and got nothing but junk books and lost money and that is why if there is a big book I wanna get I will just save up the money and get the book cause I am a very picky cause all my books are keys low print runs and rare variants cause those are the only books that will hold there value.
Yeah, I’ve bought mystery boxes of comics and of sports memorabilia. The sports memorabilia boxes usually are pretty good with at least two signed items (one of which is usually a HOFer or big star). The comic mystery boxes in the other hand…as with you in this video, I was like, “who the H is this?” No more comic mystery boxes for me.
Yeah I always think about doing mystery boxes but what just happened to you with the two boxes exactly the same that would make me unbelievably mad if you're going to have a mystery box like that you need to take better care of changing up your inventory so that does not happen number of the boxes 1 to 500 put on your website 1 to 500 when people choose the number they want take that number out if people buy more than one have the contents written down make sure they don't get that same contents take a little extra time if you're going to do something of that high value
I'd rather be in control of what I spend my comics money on; a couple of hundred dollars will buy a lot of reading or a very significant comic/s needed to fill holes in the collection.
I bought one box. Basically got an obscure one and have it at the shop for sale. I was fully expecting Brys exclusives but I got from the collection I think. And…. It was fun. It was fun. And Bry is always good to me so am happy to support him. I was hoping to hit big. Not this time. Maybe next time.
Mystery boxes are a con. Dealers have three types of books: Books you actually want, books that do have value, but you are uninterested in, and books nobody is buying - even if a price guide says they have value - no one is buying them currently. Dealers use mystery boxes to dump types 2 and 3 on you, with a few books from category 1 to entice you. Your video title says it best... "I won something... I guess." In other words, you paid top dollar to get books that purportedly have a value... but you don't care. In short: They take advantage of the fact you want to take advantage of them.
Hi Jim, I know the feeling about mystery boxes, you might give the "aero"#2 away for the 3000 subscriber. I'm not familiar with that comic. Odd they'd send the same comics. Let us know what you decide to do with them .thanks for sharing
I was about to grab one because I'm a degenerate gambler like that, but I knew the options outside of the grand prizes were going to be books I had no interest in, I decided to skip it
Deadpool the Duck 1:50 VF raw copy just sold for $17 in January 2024 lol, nobody wants that garbage. Have you sold the book yet a year later? And for how much?
You realize that mystery buys are a profitable way to get rid of unwanted inventory yes? Ah well, Bry made money, got rid of stuff, people supported him.
This is why i dont buy " mystery " boxes especially through auctions. It's just a way for people to unload shit they cant normally sell. Theyll lay out key comics in their video to mislead you into thinking every mystery box contains a key comic.
I'm sorry but mystery boxes are a scam and anyone who does them regardless of how much people like their content or who they are is probably a horrible person who doesn't care who they step on to climb on up to the top
It seems that the point of mystery boxes is to unload inventory that would never otherwise move.

Mystery boxes a great way to get rid of junk that sits. Offer up a awesome book and dump the rest
Pump and dump baby.

Mystery boxes are how dealers get rid of excess stock. Don’t be suckered in.

I love Bry and his company but I got the same box. Spidergirls 1 and Aero 2 cbcs. Prob a lot of those combos.
Some desirability in the Spider Girls. Still have Aero.
@@bronzevillecomics2581 agreed me too.
Geezzz

Sorry for your loss, but it is good to see how rubbish these mystery boxes are before I might've pulled the trigger, so thank you for the content

Well somebody won. That somebody was not me.
@@bronzevillecomics2581 lol. If you had that would have been some show.
The house always wins. Never forget that!
Mystery boxes are a massive gamble but if you won the GP for this box, that would be insane. Then again, that is a way to entice.

Cool. Yeah. I don’t intend to keep any, just hoping I can move them.
He announced the 3 grand prize winners before shipping.
Btw, I got the same books as well - lol.
grand prize winning numbers *

As I said, not a high demand book. Most modern books have minimal value. I high grade bronze or silver (or even copper) book does have some value.

Hahaha, Aero is an MVP in Marvel Snap! Not that that will get you your money back on a book.
No sales on older books = Possibly rare. No sales on modern books = Nobody wants them. Tough break.

Congrats you did well with 9.8 spider girl variant.
Thank you for the vid. For me (after learning some lessons) all Mystery boxes are a hard pass for me.
I’m less and less inclined. I will sometimes if there is a big grand prize.
Maybe the Aero is aerodynamic as you toss it out your window.
Some of this video aged like milk but how cool is that Justice League tee?
Those slabs were not good. But the odds of winning the big prizes was decent for the price point.
The spider girls is $300-$350 $100 high raw
Congrats on getting hoodwinked😂😂😂
I really enjoy this content!!
I got one and was disappointed even though the value of mine was listed at $325 it seems to sell for $225 more regularly.

Yes, a vendor can say a book is worth $50. But if no one wants to buy it, it's worth zero.

He bought like 300 slabs from a collector a month back or soo.
Double your pleasure! Double your fun! 🙄
Dang rhats rough lol

I wouldn’t pay $10 for that Deadpool the duck and this dude says go list it for $500. Trying to rob someone blind
