Best way to do a sound comparison is not having a break in between the two and bounce them back and forth to compare easier.

I've been using the Bose S1 Pro for over 3 years, almost exclusively as a ceremony and/or cocktail hour set-up. At the time, it was the closest thing to a total package for my needs (sound, convenience, portability). It has served me extremely well for those three years and I couldn't be more pleased with it. That said, a video like this is really (!) helpful for anyone who is looking to buy their first battery powered system or is adding to their inventory. For my needs and for how I use them, it would likely come down to price and availability. I don't think there's a wrong answer and, as Brian said, it's up to each of us to decide. Thanks Brian -- another great video

  • @ksukhia

One thing to consider: The S1 Pro uses an array of drivers (3 pointing in diff directions supported by a 4th LF driver) vs the EV which is a 2way design (ie a HF+LF 2 driver config like a typical PA speaker). This means the dispersion characteristics are going to be different and is also the reason the EV will certainly win on SPL when measured at a single point in space (as it would be by the measurement mic picking up a 1khz signal fed into the speaker). The S1's strength is that when playing program material, it will provide about 90db evenly over a wider coverage area vs the EV which is going to blast 100+ db in more of a beam of focused sound towards a part of the audience. Different tools for different jobs in some ways. The S1 is designed to provide a good overall sound to a wider audience while sacrificing some energy (bass) and overall volume. The EV will throw its sound to a narrower slice of the audience but will hit harder and louder, meaning it really needs multiple units for even coverage. But two EV's would give excellent coverage and sound beating the S1 hands down sonically, but then youre paying a lot more to get that. That is why the S1 makes a good case for itself, usually it is just 'enough' to satisfy most needs.

I think in the area of ceremony PA, the S1 got it down due to its wide dispursion. I think the EV would make for a great side fill for when you need to get some extra reinforcement in a tight area.

I have owned the Bose S1 ever since they were introduced. It’s a great little speaker that I use for small gatherings at church for worship. I use it all the time to run my Spotify library through it. The only thing I don’t like is the slide switch for tone match. I think it sounds terrible with guitar and vocals. I also recently bought a EV Evolve 30 for regular church services. It sounds great too. I love both.

I just traded in an S1Pro for the Everse8 and got going with it today. To start I just connected my cellphone by Bluetooth and played different kinds of music from Spotify. It was disappointing with a lower HiFi sound as compared to the S1Pro!! I thought, crap, what have I done!? Why the heck did I trade in?? But I didn't get discouraged and explored, tweaked, and played. There is a hell of a lot of adjusting to do with this next-generation speaker! The EQ settings alone get me cross-eyed!!! I had to choose between GEQ and PEQ. What the hell is that, I thought, and had to research it a bit! Graphic Equalizer and Parametric Equalizer, I found out, but I have lots more to learn, like should I choose PEQ or GEQ??? :) The Everse8 is very sensitive to EQ; on my Galaxy phone, I discovered that I had to choose the right EQ on the phone (for example Pop or Classical or Jazz etc) to get the best results by Bluetooth. Or I could adjust EQ on the speaker. I didn't have to struggle like this with the Bluetooth speakers I have!
    Anyhow, bottom line is this:
The Everse8 is NOT for you if you just want to play music or karaoke at a party; no Sir! You need to know quite a bit about Pro sound, know about EQs etc. etc. The mic preamps on the S1Pro are pretty piss poor; I had to use a mixer to get good volume. Whereas I am delighted that you get terrific and rich sound with the Everse8 using a dynamic microphone. Phantom power only on input 1 by the way. After a couple of hours of adjusting, tweaking and experimenting, I have decided I did the right thing trading in the S1Pro for this Everse8. I have much more to learn though, I think, with the EQs for a microphone.
Thanks for this video, but you have only scratched the surface; the speaker is meant for vocals and/or guitar and backing tracks from inputs 3/4. Just playing music, as in this video, will absolutely not help people decide! In fact, to me the S1Pro sounded better on this video! :)

Listen from minute 11.12 .listen only to the snare drum sound coming out from both monitors..
I can tell a big difference in the frequencies of both monitors ,the snare drum on the everse 8 sounders smashed as against the bose S1 one which sounded very flat and musical, the bose is cleaner in all the frequencies/the Everse is kind of hyped on the low frequency, for a professional listener stand point the bose is far superior in sound quality

The EV seem to have a slightly richer sound. Wonder if it handles bass better than the S1. I've been using them awhile and that's my only gripe.

I would say with an 8" woofer, it will handle bass a lot better than a 6.5" woofer. The SPL level is higher too, so that makes a major difference too.

    • @PURESOUND4
      @PURESOUND4 2 роки тому

@@BluesCat1980 Although I'm sure the EV does get louder, I'm always skeptical of manufacturers SPL claims. Some companies measure it at 1m with a B&K, some at .5m with a no name mic, and others just "calculate" the SPL without actually taking a measurement! There is no industry wide standard, so you just have to take the word of the marketing department for that particular company. 😞

@@BluesCat1980 Yeah, but sound quality is very subjective. I know what I think sounds good, and that might not line up with someone else's opinion. The everse provides phantom power on one input. The everse's most important advantage is the quality of the app that drives it. It's solid. Including auto adjusts for everything from bass guitar through speaking voice, 30 dynachord dsp effects, multiple graphic eqs and a powerful parametric eq. Most importantly you can name and save your settings and recall them as needed. In this product, they've teamed up with Bosch. It's a pro piece of gear.

I go out as a little trio, our singer has the Bose S1 and our sax player the JBL EON One. The Bose and the EV sound quite different beasts I think the Bose is a 6.5" woofer and 3 small drivers maybe 2" on the top end. As a result I feel it's very good in the vocal region but it's going to suffer in the real low end, and the real high end which is what this video seems to demonstrate. The EV has a larger bass woofer and a proper 1" tweeter so it's a more conventional design and with the top end being titanium (I think) it's got a clear advantage. You mention the EV has a much higher max SPL but it probably doesn't state what frequency that is at, I suspect the tweeter probably can go very loud at certain frequencies so it's probably measured at 1-4kHz not 100-400Hz so much like power ratings it's probably a moot point. Nevertheless assuming it was an apples to apples comparison each time you want an additional 3dB of output you need to double the power. So the EV driven with 10w should be as loud as the Bose driven with 160w (as I say it's unlikely these figures are really meaningful as manufacturers skew this all the time). So I'd like to see a more apples to apples comparison between the EV and the JBL if you have access to one! I would also say that you can probably get the EV to sound really great with that much EQ available onboard

Thanks for doing this video. I love bose products. It's like if you don't own them, you can't tell type of thing with bose product. But let say i need this speakers for side fill, ceremony, small gathering, Dj monitor ... what else would you need this tiny speakers for lol? for me i see the versatility (Easy setup). For that reason Ev is the winner for me. For example, If you have two of the EV you can Bluetooth stereo pair them without any wire, plus the usb C for iPad/ phone charging and dc out for wireless receiver and finally the speaker mode. That's why i bought EV.

The EV lost me when it used the screen for all controls. I use this for ceremonies and need knobs to control volumes and eqs quickly. Also, for outdoor events in the sun it can very challenging to see the screen on sunny days. I had that issue with the jbl one, trying to see levels in the sun was difficult. I just bought the yorkville mobile 8 and seems to be the winner for me between those 3. I haven't owned the bose.

I’ve got 2 S1pro and I’ve ordered 2 everse 8. I currently plan to keep both. What I love about Bose is that I never want to or feel the need to tweak the sound when listening to music through them. They sound fantastic and give real audiophile detail that you don’t hear on many systems. I do occasionally think they’re not powerful enough for live performances however. And as Brian points out in the other video, bose are great now at consumer audio which is where I lean with the S1 Pro. So the fact it has very few controls is it’s plus. Where as the EV had loads of control which I think will be it’s plus for live. I may change my mind once I have the EVs but that’s my current standing. Thanks for making the video 👍

I have the S1 and use it for Korg keys and mic. the Tone Match is the little bit of genius which brings it all together. EV might sound a full on the Aux in perhaps, but its the clarity of the Bose that wins hands down for any live performer.

The Bose has much better clarity and sound quality imo. EV has more bass/low-end.
As a singer/guitarist I prefer the Bose for these reasons. If I ever wanted more base I’d just get the Bose Sub that’s goes with the S1.
I also prefer the smaller size of the Bose S1, that was the whole point of it. Being able to take it anywhere easily with it’s small footprint and just hooking it up to a bigger system when needed.
But like I said, “this is coming from a musician” that go a S1 because of it’s sound quality to form-factor.

I thought the Bose had a much crisp in full sound over the EV as well from this video. But also Brian took 6db from the mid section, that is alot & to me why I think it sounded a bit muffled and muddy. I think if he had left it the straights about messing with the meds at all he would have had a lot more crisp full round sound.
