I just traded in an S1Pro for the Everse8 and got going with it today. To start I just connected my cellphone by Bluetooth and played different kinds of music from Spotify. It was disappointing with a lower HiFi sound as compared to the S1Pro!! I thought, crap, what have I done!? Why the heck did I trade in?? But I didn't get discouraged and explored, tweaked, and played. There is a hell of a lot of adjusting to do with this next-generation speaker! The EQ settings alone get me cross-eyed!!! I had to choose between GEQ and PEQ. What the hell is that, I thought, and had to research it a bit! Graphic Equalizer and Parametric Equalizer, I found out, but I have lots more to learn, like should I choose PEQ or GEQ??? :) The Everse8 is very sensitive to EQ; on my Galaxy phone, I discovered that I had to choose the right EQ on the phone (for example Pop or Classical or Jazz etc) to get the best results by Bluetooth. Or I could adjust EQ on the speaker. I didn't have to struggle like this with the Bluetooth speakers I have!
    Anyhow, bottom line is this:
The Everse8 is NOT for you if you just want to play music or karaoke at a party; no Sir! You need to know quite a bit about Pro sound, know about EQs etc. etc. The mic preamps on the S1Pro are pretty piss poor; I had to use a mixer to get good volume. Whereas I am delighted that you get terrific and rich sound with the Everse8 using a dynamic microphone. Phantom power only on input 1 by the way. After a couple of hours of adjusting, tweaking and experimenting, I have decided I did the right thing trading in the S1Pro for this Everse8. I have much more to learn though, I think, with the EQs for a microphone.
Thanks for this video, but you have only scratched the surface; the speaker is meant for vocals and/or guitar and backing tracks from inputs 3/4. Just playing music, as in this video, will absolutely not help people decide! In fact, to me the S1Pro sounded better on this video! :)

One thing to consider: The S1 Pro uses an array of drivers (3 pointing in diff directions supported by a 4th LF driver) vs the EV which is a 2way design (ie a HF+LF 2 driver config like a typical PA speaker). This means the dispersion characteristics are going to be different and is also the reason the EV will certainly win on SPL when measured at a single point in space (as it would be by the measurement mic picking up a 1khz signal fed into the speaker). The S1's strength is that when playing program material, it will provide about 90db evenly over a wider coverage area vs the EV which is going to blast 100+ db in more of a beam of focused sound towards a part of the audience. Different tools for different jobs in some ways. The S1 is designed to provide a good overall sound to a wider audience while sacrificing some energy (bass) and overall volume. The EV will throw its sound to a narrower slice of the audience but will hit harder and louder, meaning it really needs multiple units for even coverage. But two EV's would give excellent coverage and sound beating the S1 hands down sonically, but then youre paying a lot more to get that. That is why the S1 makes a good case for itself, usually it is just 'enough' to satisfy most needs.

I've been using the Bose S1 Pro for over 3 years, almost exclusively as a ceremony and/or cocktail hour set-up. At the time, it was the closest thing to a total package for my needs (sound, convenience, portability). It has served me extremely well for those three years and I couldn't be more pleased with it. That said, a video like this is really (!) helpful for anyone who is looking to buy their first battery powered system or is adding to their inventory. For my needs and for how I use them, it would likely come down to price and availability. I don't think there's a wrong answer and, as Brian said, it's up to each of us to decide. On the Bose connect, the only thing there is being able to connect 2 speakers together in either mono or stereo mode. I've never seen any other options such as power level remaining etc.
That being said, I am open to the EV being it has all the bells and whistles that are handy, which I can't believe Bose has never added yet. Pretty pitiful on their behalf being that even the cheapest of speakers have all the bells and whistles already.

I go out as a little trio, our singer has the Bose S1 and our sax player the JBL EON One. The Bose and the EV sound quite different beasts I think the Bose is a 6.5" woofer and 3 small drivers maybe 2" on the top end. As a result I feel it's very good in the vocal region but it's going to suffer in the real low end, and the real high end which is what this video seems to demonstrate. The EV has a larger bass woofer and a proper 1" tweeter so it's a more conventional design and with the top end being titanium (I think) it's got a clear advantage. You mention the EV has a much higher max SPL but it probably doesn't state what frequency that is at, I suspect the tweeter probably can go very loud at certain frequencies so it's probably measured at 1-4kHz not 100-400Hz so much like power ratings it's probably a moot point. Nevertheless assuming it was an apples to apples comparison each time you want an additional 3dB of output you need to double the power. So the EV driven with 10w should be as loud as the Bose driven with 160w (as I say it's unlikely these figures are really meaningful as manufacturers skew this all the time). So I'd like to see a more apples to apples comparison between the EV and the JBL if you have access to one! I would also say that you can probably get the EV to sound really great with that much EQ available onboard

Brian, I have been watching you for YEARS and your videos never disappoint. They are great, thoughtful and all around good stuff. You have proven that one does not need the fluff to make a good video. Have a great day bud. Keep it up. Btw, the EV is a great speaker but imo is overpriced and EV seems to know that as they are already doing price drops.

I’ve got 2 S1pro and I’ve ordered 2 everse 8. I currently plan to keep both. What I love about Bose is that I never want to or feel the need to tweak the sound when listening to music through them. They sound fantastic and give real audiophile detail that you don’t hear on many systems. I do occasionally think they’re not powerful enough for live performances however. And as Brian points out in the other video, bose are great now at consumer audio which is where I lean with the S1 Pro. So the fact it has very few controls is it’s plus. Where as the EV had loads of control which I think will be it’s plus for live. I may change my mind once I have the EVs but that’s my current standing. Thanks for making the video 👍

Listened to it on my 16" Macbook pro speakers. S1 sounds better. Clearer, better mid range and lower mids. EV sounds like a smiley eq curve. the midrange is sucked out and top end is quite glassy. but EV has more authority on the low end but a bit soupy as well. It could be the placement perhaps not sure. I have no doubt EV will sound louder.

I have both the Bose S1 Pro (2 of them being used as monitors and one EV, although the EV is an older (HUGE) professional band monitor. For listening comparison should have immediately switched from the S1 to the EV. Luckily you used text overlays so it was easy for me to do a quick jump from the S1 to the EV.
I tend to differ with most of the comments here and listening its apparent to me the S1 are superior in sound to the EV. The bass response is more pronounced and cleaner on the S1 compared to the EV.
You mentioned its difficult to compare using your setup but it would have been much better if you had connected the line out of each speaker and connected it to a digital recording device like on of the Zoom H series recorders. You would have gotten a good sample post DSP of each speaker that would be discernible to the listener here on UA-cam.
Anyway, thank you for posting the comparison.

Pls read my comment today. I traded in my S1Pro for the Everse8. Just listening to various kinds of music on Spotify using Bluetooth, I thought, crap, this just does not sound that hi-fidelity! Why the hell did I trade in, I thought! But I did a lot of adjusting of EQ and realized just how advanced this speaker is compared to the S1Pro and felt so relieved. Besides, the whole purpose of this PA speaker is to sing vocals and/or play guitar, plus use backing tracks! It takes a lot of tweaking to get the best sound; this speaker is for Pros, and not to just turn on and have karaoke fun! No! And one other thing: the Mic preamps on the S1Pro are so weak! Whereas with the Everse8, the vocals are rich and real loud! Indeed, this is a next generation speaker; Bose needs to wake up! The S1Pro cost $600 to start and now it costs $700. Duh.
Now if I can figure out whether to set the Everse8 for PEQ or GEQ...:)
