Thank you for this helpful hint! I fixed mine with heat tape this morning. I also had to replace the fan control switch with the air director hot and cold display module I got the part for $21 online also received it in 3 business days today was one of the happiest days of my life it was 18 degrees outside. Once I received text through USPS services send my package had arrived I was there when the doors opened I had them dig through the packsges cart to find my item LOL! Needless to say it all worked out wonderful the part works great and the heat tape seems to be a success the heat in the car is insanely hot the AC also works perfectly what a difference this is made it really helped to look this up before I spent money on something I didn't need etc... thank you again enjoyed the video.
Thanks for this video. I see you didn't mention the green mode selection cable above throttle pedal. Have you ever played with that before? After following your instructions I still don't have hardly any airflow from central windshield dashboard vent. I also don't see any provisions to extend/shorten or alter the green mode selection cable length. I believe the door to be operating as I can select between feet and face zones, just no airflow to passenger side vent or windshield vent.
Just got to 5:29. I mean, I already knew that the blend door was likely the problem a couple months ago (and also prior to that a few years but forgot by time it got really bad). And can confirm, I flushed the heater core and it flowed beautifully, and yet in spite of that and a hot engine I get no heat! Glad to know you've got hot air in there but no heat in the cabin from this. Just got my A/C working after procrastinating, but now it's getting cold out so I guess I'll fix the blend doors while I'm at it. I should probably also fix the driver's side door lock so that it detects when the door's open but.... I have other junk to get back on the road first. I also hope my giant hand fits in there.
Just got around to this. Have been getting the foam in the vents for a long time (in fact, it ran out of foam a year or two ago. Unfortunately, it only helped a bit. I think in the intervening years, I may have lost refrigerant. Guess I'll try topping that up next.
Same problem 2001 Jetta. Was it necessary to take left side bottom of dash off when you had the radio, cup holder, etc. out. Could you access the blend door at that point?
I’m stuck at getting that last plastic cover off the blend box and it is such a pain where I might just hack it off and head to junk yard for a replacement. Those small clips are ridiculous to get to, also I didn’t need to remove the radio, clmatronic, cup holder or cubbyhole to get at it
So is the foam supposed to be on those doors with the holes? I think I got to do this fix but I've never had foam coming out of the vents. I haven't had my car for long anyway.
slickdaddy420 yeah I find the airflow is weak on the windshield, feet only and face only setting. But if I put it on the face and feet together it's seems unrestricted.
what if i already replaced the condensor and fixed the flap door with foam and jb weld but now my electric recirculation flap button works but its not switching the outside air from the inside air....
I want to thank you for the video and how much did helps me to fix my problem with the AC & heat.. You save me at least $600 on not necessary parts.. I own you a beer🙌
there are a lot more torx on the knee panels than just one or two...I think in total, for both the left and right pieces, there are 5 torx, all along the bottom and two are hidden by the overlap of the left panel...I had problems w/most of the screw holes and rectangular spring clip holes on the fuse panel breaking so I had to make reinforcement pieces w/lexan and gorilla glue...the blend/mixer doors truly do suck trying to get to and repair...thanks for the video
+Bear Briggs foam coming out vents. thanks for the comments. I guess I have to do this. my soft touch is beat. maybe I should replace it too. did you all vacuum out any remaining foam?
Jess Cain I’m not sure about the heater core. This is just a fix for the blend doors that the form falls off and basically makes everything not work very well.
Alan Ramirez it was. Cool, but was barely helpful in south Florida. The heat was almost none though. It's still blowing very hot air now that I'm in WI.
@@slickdaddy420 its the same for all mk4 golf and jettas. mk4 is the designation of the chassis. so this will cover all golfs and jettas from 1999 through 2004
This is exactly my problem. About how long did it take to do all that? (You might want to add this as a subtitle or in the summary as other people are asking)
Chaos Corner depends on your level of mechanical skill as to how long that it “should” take but I’m actually doing the same fix right now and I can estimate possibly 2-6 hours depending which way you go at it
slickdaddy420 Yep it was the same. Took me a whole fu**ing day to do it but it was worth it now i can enjoy warm air in cold days :D. Thanks for the video and reply.
I have no clue how you were able to get the tape up high on either door or up high in back, etc., without taking the entire duct out. The visibility is very limited with the entire duct out. You should come back and tell us how well it worked....

At 4:20 how hard did you had to pull to remove the final piece ?

Ya, I mainly did this for heat. Was moving from FL to WI. This summer I took the car in for a refrigerant refill. Helped a a ton for AC.
Thanks for the video, you have excellent timing sir
Same problem 2001 Jetta. Was it necessary to take left side bottom of dash off when you had the radio, cup holder, etc. out. Could you access the blend door at that point?
At 4:10 you need to get that back panel out. Its buried pretty deep. If you can skip any step, more power to ya.
Thanks for the vid man

jay howell how did you get to the last piece without removing the radio?
I'll be tackling this issue soon
You covered up the front door? I used duct tape on the one that you are able to see in the back and then the one to the left which you can’t see
So is the foam supposed to be on those doors with the holes? I think I got to do this fix but I've never had foam coming out of the vents. I haven't had my car for long anyway.
yes, it seems to be such a dumb design. If you got your car used and you get almost no heat and weak AC, it is quite likely this is the issue.
slickdaddy420 yeah I find the airflow is weak on the windshield, feet only and face only setting. But if I put it on the face and feet together it's seems unrestricted.

The ones on my left side were all missing :)
Cant tell how you removed that last panel to get to the blend doors. Mine is not on loose like that at all.
Pull straight up. Hard!
I just did this and that was the hardest part of the entire process. Putting it back on was even harder. Good luck
+Bear Briggs foam coming out vents. thanks for the comments. I guess I have to do this. my soft touch is beat. maybe I should replace it too. did you all vacuum out any remaining foam?
I took all the soft-touch stuff off that I could with a scotch pad. Looks much better.
Eevah?!? You're alive!
So the hot water is always flowing through the heater core? There is no valve??
Jess Cain I’m not sure about the heater core. This is just a fix for the blend doors that the form falls off and basically makes everything not work very well.
was you're heater blowing cool air?
Alan Ramirez it was. Cool, but was barely helpful in south Florida. The heat was almost none though. It's still blowing very hot air now that I'm in WI.
slickdaddy420 how long did this take to fix?
do you know if a mk4 golf is the same? 2002
Kevin Gallego hey, not sure, but I'd bet it's quite similar. Most of the car differences are shape of body I think. I'm no mechanic :)

I'll be aiming to do it this spring if I don't replace the car before.
It was a few hours. I think 4 hours with a trip to Home Depot. I could do it in an hour I bet again.
Is it the same with climatronic? Please I need answer

I just did this on my car. I have a question: Does it last long? Or will the tape peel off fast?
Currently 4th winter after this video. Still holding up.
@@slickdaddy420 Okay aweseome! Thanks for the reply^^
March of 2018 Still perfect
Is it possible to perform this on polo 3 6n2 without removing entire dashboard?
ArturO no clue what car you are referring to. This is for a mk4 Jetta.
@@slickdaddy420 I have VW Polo 3 6n2, made in 2000 after lifting. I know this is for Jetta and that's the reason for my question.
Found the reason of my problems. It is a broken pin from blend door regulator.
Nice work! Your instrucions were very useful!

I’ve had good AC and great heat for the last 6 winters in WI.
I put little 2-3in pieces in at a time. Just enough to cover a hole.
It's hard to see but the antenna wire was zip-tied to that panel.
Yeah rip my blend door cover… I used some manly strength and crack… fuck me
