  • If you want a short, potted version of exactly what it's like to climb Mt Fuji in one day/10 hours then this video is for you. Most other videos on this on UA-cam are very long and this is short 5 minutes and will show you EXACTY what it's like. I had been wanting to climb Mt Fuji for a long time - there's something mystical about this sacred mountain. After doing a LOT of research I decided to climb it in ONE DAY. I really didn't fancy staying in a mountain hut - if you stay in a hut then you have to get up at 2.30am to finish that climb. And I was pretty certain that I wouldn't get any sleep in that mountain hut anyway, so it really didn't appeal. The thought of finishing that climb up to the summit in the dark also didn't appeal. Plus in bad weather/clouds you wouldn't even have a sunrise view from the top anyway. So, after looking at a LOT of other UA-cam videos I decided to climb Mt Fuji in one day, despite knowing it would be a very long, challenging hike. This vlog shows EXACTLY how I did the climb and EXACTLY what it's like. You have to start very early - I left my hotel at 3am in a taxi to go the the 5th station of the Yoshida trail and started the climb at 4am, before the sun had risen. I had decided to do the hike with a guide (mine was called Etsuko) which was organised by a great company called HIS (see details below) who booked up my hotel near Mt Fuji for me too. They were brilliant and my hotel was very nice. Anyway, this video/vlog shows exactly what the hike is like. NB - a lot of people say that ANYONE can climb Mt Fuji. My opinion is that this is NOT true! You need to be fit, strong and have endurance. The hike goes on and on, uphill all the way to the summit. It is grueling and you will be panting and short of breath as you get higher and there's less oxygen and the air is thinner! My video shows how the terrain underfoot changes from volcanic ash to rocks - the rocks are more challenging to climb. It also shows the different stations you pass through. I hiked the Yoshida trail (which is thought to be the easiest) and started at station 5 - the summit is station 10. At most stations there is a mountain hut. At some stations (7 and 8) there are lots of different mountain huts! We were VERY lucky with the weather. It was a nice day. Had we climbed a day later it would have been very different. One highlight climbing up the mountain was the chai served by a guy called Hiro at station 7. You must buy a cup. It was delicious and just the pick-me-up I needed. This climb is NOT EASY! I start seriously flagging by station 8 and then said a prayer at a shrine which was a little higher to pray that I would make it to the top! In the end I DID make it - hoorah - and I was back flopping on my hotel bed by about 5pm. It's less than an hour's drive from the Tominoko hotel to the 5th station. We called a taxi for the return trip. The video shows my room at the Tominoko hotel, it's bed as well as its amazing balcony view over Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko. The Tominoko hotel is in the town of Kawaguchiko. The Tominoko hotel also has an 'onsen' (a Japanese hot spring) which was just what I needed to soothe aching muscles after the climb up Mt Fuji! Before my stay in Kawaguchiko (which was primarily to climb Mt Fuji) I was in Tokyo for a couple of nights and the video shows my awesome hotel there too - it was called the Park Hotel, Tokyo and the hotel starts on the 25th floor of a skyscraper. Needless to say that views from rooms of the city were awesome.
    I really hope you enjoy this video and find it useful. I say at the end of this video that it took my 7 hours to climb up. It did, but only because I kept stopping to film/take photos and also, one member of my group did NOT make it to the top because they got altitude sickness and had to go down - that took time to sort. It really took 5 hours of actual hiking to get to the top. 4 hours down.
    I STAYED AT THE TOMINOKO HOTEL the night before the climb and the night after it too.
    I used a Japanese travel agency called HIS Europe Ltd which booked everything for me - the guide/accommodation etc. They were brilliant: his-euro.co.uk/

    I have long wanted to do Mount Fuji, ever since my first visit to Japan in 2003. I always get hung up on the overnight hut-stay. However, your way is the way I always have done my hikes-no overnight stuff-just do it! My past hikes have always been early starts like you did it. So I will plan it this way. This year is the year!Thanks for your video!

      Glad to help. Yes, I couldn't see any value in staying overnight in a mountain hut. I'd never be able to sleep and you have to wake up at 2.30am anyway to summit for sunrise, so it really didn't sound very relaxing and was going to take up two days instead of one!! I had a nice day cycling around Lake Kawagachi the day after I climbed Fuji, although admittedly my thighs were screaming as I cycled!!

      TYSM Joe, but never say never to it though!! There's a saying that a wise man (or woman!) never climbs Fuji more than once - I think I know why! But my guide had climbed it a whopping 700 times. How mad is that?! XXX

      I don't think you can cycle on Fuji - I didn't see one bike there. I also think the trail doesn't make it possible...too rocky in too many places. And too many people - there would be nowhere for the bikes to go!!

    Well done... and a very good short video. Just wondering how your taxi can go from Kawaguchiko to 5th Station? Many websites mention that the traffic from Kawaguchiko to 5th Station is restricted only for bus between July to September. Take a taxi sounds like a good idea as my whole family (wife, 13yrs boy, and 10yrs boy) will try to climb in July 2024.

    • @gowithjo1
      @gowithjo1  18 днів тому

      Hello there - gosh, I did this last year and a taxi was NO problem. Unless they've changed their rules for this year. They've changed a whole host of other rules - did you see my video on it? It's about timings and restrictions on numbers of people who can climb etc. But I hadn't heard of them restricting taxis...you'll have to check with wherever you are staying...good luck for your climb. It is a long slog. Hope your 10 year old is ok with it....

      So, I can't remember exactly, but it WASN'T cheap. Something like £150 or £180 return...I THINK. It was a lot. But it is an hour ride each way...and they took us there at 3am, so a very anti-social hour. Whichever hotel you plan to stay at will let you know the price.
