I was fortunate to be able to take lessons from Henry when I lived in Chicago. His approach is simple but musically very intricate. And to see him perform live is a joy.
Henry Johnson is not only a fine teacher, but an even better human being - as well as being one of the finest jazz guitarists alive. He is the real deal. How real? Well, when George Benson passes through Chicago, he hangs with H.J. That's real, my friends, it doesn't get more real than that, at least when it comes to making music.
The last part is valuable! I would not it naturally to avoid sounding similar and as he said clashing. Major thirds against minor's aren't cool when heard from keys vs guitars comping at the same time. I did as Pat Martino and Grant Green would do,listen to the not listening pianist..just lay out at times.
Henry, didn't you tour with George Benson back in 1979 when George had a string of hits? Did you share the stage with him at the Seattle Arena ... Spring of '79?
Ok thanks I'm self taught so some of these chords I'm not familiar with especially jazz chords I can name every note on the fretboard I know the major and minor scales I build chords from the major scales I understand scale degree but I just can't make it sound musical .
Nathaniel Nelson try a few beginner lesson videos. Try playing a chord and then imagining a line over it. Recreate that line using your guitar. It will take some time but really focus on playing purposefully rather than hitting random notes in the key
Question. When you hear a song you decide what Key its in, then if its Major, Minor or Dom. Then use your phrases in this key, areas of activity up and down the neck to play the solo.. Then as the cord change you follow it and the melody in appropriate phrases. Is that how you do it?
Josh McKee Here just major and minor with occasional chromatic notes. A good idea is to see how these inversions fit around the major scale, that's always how I look at them
Nathaniel Nelson There might be some background information you need before you can take advantage of this, Nathaniel. What in particular is confusing you?
I'm not sure what you're working on now, but at first he is playing a GMaj7 chord, then playing only the four notes in that chord to make a melody. If that is confusing you, I recommend beginning to study the different types of chords: Maj7, Dominant 7, Min7, and Half Diminished 7. That will take you very far.
Nathaniel...he is explaining Major Minor and Dominant Inversions ..on the DGBE strings (4 notes (1,3,5,7)..and hence 4 arrangements thereof )...please check out Jimmy Bruno's lesson (he has very clear lesson on fretboard structure )...It is Guitar Structure 101...it can seem complex...but .. you will "get it"..if you take it step by step
Look up Wes Montgomery and watch and listen to everyone of his UA-cam videos. Then you'll know what Jazz is. Miles Davis too! And about 1000 other classic jazz artist innovators like Wes and Miles. Ps Mr. Henry Johnson here gives wonderful examples and teachings on jazz! Right here!
Every note you play sounds like music.

Could you share the general roadmap you learned? And your takeaways from the lessons?
I like your thinking and your sensibilities. Logical and at the same time very musical.
Omg this is life changing I have to write these inversions down and relate them to the pentatonic scale
Nice! Great way to organize without needing scales ...
I know it's mostly in the hands but this guitar sounds so good! This guy is an amazing teacher.
Heritage Guitars for the win.

I gotta' practice!!!
Thanks.

流石ですね😃
Technically speaking, what does it mean to play inside a shape? Is it playing within that scale in that area of the fret board?

Why the sticker over the F Hole ?
Was wondering the same thing
I understand the sticker reduces certain feedback hollow bodies are known for.
I would like to know if you give jazz lesson on Skype
What scale is he using?

Come back to it from time to time. It will make more sense every time. I’ve been there too
