Back in the early nineteen seventies, I had a job repairing high-speed check scanning machines that constantly jammed and broke down. The machines were scattered all over Los Angles and one of the machines was located in the Texaco Building on Wilshire Boulevard. After repairing the machine in the Texaco Building, I'd often take a stroll down Wilshire Boulevard to kill time while waiting for my next service call to appear on my pager. There were no no cell phones in those days, but we could get text messages on a pager. Anyway, the Ambassador Hotel was only a short walk from the Texaco Building and I'd often walk right in front of the hotel, but I never got around to going into the hotel to have a look around. I knew all the history of the hotel at that time, so it's a mystery to me why I never took the time to go inside. Maybe I thought the hotel would be there forever, so I wasn't in any rush to see the inside. Also, I assumed that I'd live in LA for many years and had unlimited time to visit the local landmarks. I'm not sure why I never got around to going into the hotel, but now I regret that I missed out on seeing part of history with my own eyes. There's a lesson here for people like me who put things off.

I'm from the UK & we stayed here back in 1986. It wasn't our choice, it was a part of the holiday package.
I knew nothing of its history & no idea of its place in US folklore. So, during our stay we learned about the assassination of Robert Kennedy and the many legends that danced the night away at the Cocoanut Grove, Oscar presentations and soon to be stars who debuted here.
We were amazed at its history, star struck to be staying at such an iconic hotel in LA. Following in the footsteps of many celebrities from a golden era.
We visited the Grove, stood there & took it all in, listened to the story of the tragic death of Robert Kennedy.
It was not that long ago that to my horror, I found out they closed the hotel down only 3yrs after our stay...and then several years later they demolished it!!!
WTF were they thinking?!
Now the US has no real history, not compared to say with Europe, with buildings and places etc
This place was dripping in history, why oh why was this done?
I've still got a copy of a golden sleeve book telling the story of The Cocoanut Grove, I will cherish it, as its apart of Hollywood history...RIP Ambassador Hotel.
The planners of this district at the time should hang their heads in shame....
IDK why in America we demolish iconic structures to build a gas station or parking lot?
the answer to your question is, as always, MONEY! A new building was worth more money on that land than the old building. History be damned, tear it down for money. Capitalism at it's worst.

Good work Jordan. Enjoyed it. When I was inducted into the Navy, we stayed at the Ambassador. It was owned by the government. I was put in a room on the sixth floor, there was even an elevater operator with his red cap. I walked the place and I will tell you, it was eerie from the ballroom to the kitchen. Someone had painted a black wreath on the wall of the pantry. This was in 1975, of June. Anyway, a fine vlog, sir !
It's because of Robert Kennedy he was murdered in the kitchen

To honor RFK, my HS senior class had the senior prom there in the Ambassador Ball Room. When I graduated from UCLA, my dad and step mother came out and stayed in one of the bungalows.
Years later when I wan an associate producer, we made a movie there just before they tore it down. "Tool Box Murders." Not to be confused with the original Tool Box Murders. The one we made was with Toby Hooper as the director. Got to see the hall/kitchen where RFK was shot. The door and frame wasn't the original. The FBI or Secrete Service took the original.
Graduated Fairfax high school in 1977 John Burroughs Jr high in 1973. From the Ambassador Hotel to walking past Red Foxx Studio every morning to Griffith Park, and my best friend live on Wilton place you have made me homesick. Never been to Gelson's on Franklin but when it was Mayfair market I met Newman from Seinfeld there. Great job!!
What a shame the building is torn down! Coconut Grove is famously known. Some things should be preserved for historical purposes.

Always interesting, seeing how things have changed over time. As you said about the comments left on Adams vlog, l was shocked, disgusted, and disappointed with what was said. l am glad NO Lionhearts talk that way.
The coconut grove is still there. It’s beautiful and it still remains with whatever was in good shape. They have theatrical plays there and visitors are allowed inside after school. The pool is available for the community and the little shops that were mentioned are all there still!

I was 14 when this happened ! It was a very BAD year, Martin Luther King that year too ! I was in Camarillo for it. Actually watched his speech, then went to do other things. Found out at the eleven o'clock news. Shocking, but not. Sad for sure. Very informative, Man .

When I first saw The Aviator film and it featured the Coconut Grove, I had to do some research on that place. Wow! So much old Hollywood history in that place. I was saddened to hear of its demolition and decided to go check it out for myself. Like yourself, I was not able to get inside, but enjoyed it from the outside. You’re right about those old original sign details out on Wiltshire. The tall pillar/tower and those signs on the wall are the only things left that are original. The entire rest of it is gone except one wall inside the Coconut Grove. I read that the wall is part of the cafeteria.

Shame The Coconut Grove wasn't Landmarked and protected.

I was watching a video about Elvis Presley and then your video popped up. The one you show us his Beverly Hills Home. I watched it and just like that you have become my favorite channel. I lived in L.A for 31 years and never went to visit any of these places. Now that I moved to a different state I sure wish I had visited. I'm sure glad you make these videos that I love💙

The entrance to the hotel was straight off from Wilshire. The entrance to the Coconut Grove was to the right side, but you could enter into the hotel, then turn right down the hall to the grove. The trees were gaudy as hell. Very fake looking. You are correct on no room to dance. They often had to put extra tables down on the dance floor to seat guest. To me the stage was very small. Could only put in a small band and then the singer pretty much had to stay in one spot unless he/she stepped down onto the dance floor.
My brother in law was Sammy Davis Jr's cousin and his father Will Mastin(from The Will Mastin Trio featuring Sammy) had a condo directly across the street from here. The building has appeared in many TV shows and we used to swim in the pool on the roof all the time in the early 70's. You could look straight down to the Coconut Grove. The Brown Derby was also up the street on Wilshire.
That is so strange they tore it down and rebuilt similar, crazy. Great video

Jordan`s vlogs are much more interesting then The Woo`s. I used to watch Adam every day but the man became really irritating with his childisch voices and all that Disney all the time. Lots of people are irritated by that. Now i`m following Jordans vlogs because they are more interesting en because Jordan is acting normal and is and has very good stories about the places he visits. So big thumbs up for Jordan.

Without being able to gain access, you covered this historic site VERY NICELY. This is more or less how I would've done my video on this subject, so my hat is off to you. As a fellow Valentino fan, I'm sure you know that the fake palm trees that decorated the Cocoanut Grove were from Rudy's film "The Sheik". Also, in my opinion, the Cocoanut Grove is most recognizable when it portrayed the Coco Bongo Club in "The Mask".
Very good video- thanks. A crime they knocked down the Ambassador- IMO. Made all the more bizarre by the land being purchased by a school board who proceed to build a structure looking a lot like the Ambassador, then close it off to the public from the look of it. Wish I had made it down for a tour before 05.

I took alot of photos in the pantry and exactly where he was shot .. working on show there as a PA gave me access to pretty much everything anytime.
Why did the LAUSD tear down a perfectly good historic building and build one similar? Follow the money.

They should have let you roam around/film since it’s a public building (paid for by taxes collected from you and other CA residents).

I worked here in 1998 on HBO show...alot of stuff was happening there...one day met metallica there doing a photo shoot.. I was working on show for about 4 months...saw everything..even tunnels from hotel to the bungalows.. amazing place.... creepy at night though on the nights we filmed.

I feel bad for adam. He does not need to be treated that way. If the property was not cleansed of spirits before they built the school, I wouldn't be surprised if a few guests were walking those halls.

I used to live off Mariposa and Wilshire in the Embassy apts back in 2000. I loved walking by the Ambassador on my way to the bus to work. I used to feed the feral cats that lived over there lol nonetheless, it's pretty amazing( and disappointing) that they've turned this historical landmark into a school. LA is forever evolving. When I lived in Koreatown there was always construction as well. I've been binge watching your vlogs all day at work and thought I would just share! Thanks for the information! Makes me miss home a bit!

My wife graduated on it's inaugural graduating back in 2006... She was completely clueless it was a famous hotel. What a shame.
The movie, THE BEST MAN(1964) was filmed around The Ambassador Hotel so you get a good view of what the hotel. Frank Mankiewitz,was Robert Kennedy's campaign manager was there when RFK was shot. His sin is Ben Mankiewitz, a host on TCM.
In case it hasn’t been mentioned, more bullet holes than possible for one shooter were also uncovered at the time.

Worked with a company that often conducted events at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. We always called it "The Gold Room" & I freaked out my boss when I pointed out to her we were going through the doorway were RFK was shot...

Do you study up on these places or do you just have a lot of knowledge about places in Hollywood? I'm new to watching your videos, and that was the first thing I noticed that made me want to watch more. The first video I watched was the frank Zappa house...great video!

I am enjoying getting csught up on your videos! I remember my jaw dropping when they demolished The Ambassador...it really was a WTF moment. On another subject - can you take pups on the metro? My dogs would think I had lost my ever lovin' mind if I tried to get them on underground train...but just curious.
I don't know. I would never take a dog on the metro.. actually, I wouldn't even ride it now. L.A. DEFUNDED the security and undercover police on public transportation.. basically, it's a free for all for mugging people now..
