Agree completely. Abram's nacelle's fracked up the whole thing, including the nacelle struts and the spine-neck connecting the primary and secondary hulls. Let's not even get into how the bridge looks like an antiseptic rubber room, but the engineering section truly looks like the bowels of a 'garbage scow.'
My feeling about the JJ-prise is that the engine pylons look like they were drawn for a Trek parody cartoon. The hull pylon is too far aft on the secondary hull. And I HATE that transparent bridge. I've been a Trek fan since I was 4 and loved the Constitution class and you are 100% spot on. I wanted like a fool to believe these films would be good however they are crap and I don't consider them canon. Just Cosplay garbage
Totally agree. And Chris Pine's Kirk is just aweful. He turned the charismatic character into a spoilt hollywood brat. Not even close to Shatners Kirk, and Scotty was portrayed as a bit of a comedian. Hated every minute of it and didn't even bother to watch the last movie.
I will never own a toy or model of the jj prize. you, know I really wanted star trek 2009 and Into Dumbness, to be good movies , that pay'd homage to the TOS series. but, jj had to FCUK it up. I will never own star trek reboot on DVD/Blu-ray. unfortunately, I am a optimist, and hope the next installment will be a better and new direction. I hope they fix the enterprise, and make it a STAR like the TOS and movies. that one shot, in TMP, where the ENT, exits the VGER cloud, and the is a sunrise on earth, ALL WAYS BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE.
Nah didn't like the new design, the engines were to close together ruining the symmetry, and to have curved pylons is leaping forward to the D design, should have been straight with variations on the design, Basically J J Abrams butchered another classic design Again and then moved on to Butcher Star Wars and Kill characters that never died in all the novel series, WELL DONE J J .
I feel that JJ is off cannon. Even the low budget fan films are truer to the original intent of what the series was meant to be. Basically JJ likes to blow things up. The fan films are doing a better job of continuing the story. I thing that JJ should do Star Wars and make hundreds of films. The star ship Rambaldi I can do without.
the 3 things i hate about the calvin line starship called Enterprice is it would have been better if it had been a ship of an enemy . enterprise are the ship it self , the engin room looks like it is a basement of a high rise from the 60s and the shuttle bay looks like they ran out of money to bild a real set . this ship inside and out is a desaster . being 60 years old and a fan for as long as star trek has been on the air i feel insulted by this ship, if that is what it is. it would have been better used as a new enemy dhip against the federation .
JJ Abrams screwed the pooch in the first few minutes of the movie by placing Kirk's pregnant mother giving birth on a ship near the Klingon Neutral zone when everyone knows he was born in RIVERSIDE IOWA. I consider the new movies as nothing more than poor quality fan fiction. I feel the same way about Disney Star Wars.
Thank you so much! So glad to know I'm not the only one who loves the designs of Star Trek ships... Of the original timeline... And hates the designs in the J. J. Abrams timeline. Though my favourite starship class is the Excelsior class, original, not the refit with the silly bumpers. I just think the Excelsior class is a beautiful mix of the classic straight lines aesthetic, and the Next Generation era curvy, sleeker designs. A nice midpoint in star fleet design between the original series/films and the Next Generation era ships.
Agree the new JJ Enterprise looks like crap. The best is still the Refit Enterprise, which looks amazing from any angle you care to view it. The Refit is still my favorite spaceship of any sci-fi series or movie.
DeusExAstra yep...JJ-prise is terrible. Refit is best looking, followed by Original, Enterprise B/E (tie in my book), Enterprise-D, and then C. JJ-prise doesn't make the cut.
The Refit will be my favorite until the end of time. Seeing it back out of Space Dock in a Search for Spock, then turn and pull away, is an image that will play over and over again in my head forever.
j.j. abrams uses "it`s in an ulternate universe",the kelvin timeline".,as an excuse, trying to pull the wool over fan`s eyes, so pathetic!,i liked the movie.but I believe you are right.it isn't canon star trek,or star trek really.he used this excuse to mess up everything he could get his hands on that we fans liked and enjoyed most.
Rebecca Labs it’s sad when fan films can kill blockbuster productions with major financial backing in terms of good storytelling, quality character development and behaving with honor toward the source material, and that is currently what Star Trek is experiences right now.
I completely agree with everything you said about the JJ-Prise. I prefer the refit to the TOS design but they're damn close! That's the only thing we disagree upon :D
I watched the 1st movie. Tried to be positive. Especially because I saw that Leonard Nimoy was doing a part in it, but alas, I hated the movie and I hate the JJPrise even more. The warp nacelles are absolutely horrid and look more like something you'd find in the sex-toy section of Spencer Gifts. The overall ship scale is just plain stupid.
James Denson I starting to except the design of the reboots only Because they’re like an alternate universe ? But the Koerner Design although freaking awesome , is a Little too military?
j.j. abrams didn't grow up watching star trek.i say if you aren't a fan,and didn't watch the show.plus did`nt take the time to consider what would offend a true trekker,or as some would call them, trekkie.then leave well enough alone!!!!!!!.leave this stuff to somebody who knows what they are doing,a real trekker!.
I am absolutely not a nitpicky Star Trek fan like you, but I must say that those nacelles are really too close to each other, and the secondary hull looks like it's just plain missing from some angles, which is clearly not a good look. Oh, and what was the point of making the ship bigger, when it doesn't actually make a difference in how it looks, but rather, simply screws up the scales in reference to everything else in the series? Seems like he actually was trying to eff things up.
I too have always loved Gabe's design and wished it had been in the reboot films. He's a good person to talk to. I too wish there was a 3D printed kit of his design out there. I as well would love a physical kit even if it's 3D printed.
There is one very glaring problem with JJ's Enterprise, that should result in the whole ship loosing it's crew. The glaring weakness too many people, too close together, not enough compartmentalization, or bulkheads. The bulkheads, and compartments prevents the loss of the crew, as sections are automatically cut of from each other in case of an hull breach. One good placed shot on JJ' Enterprise, and the whole crew is gone. With that many people bunched together, and a second to react, who escapes...unfortunately...none!
The variation on the TOS design I liked the best is Madman's Defiant. It has alot of the best points of the TOS and TNG versions, though I do love Gabriel's too. :)
Because it is an alternative timeline, the design size of the starships is pretty much open game to not having to stick to the design expectations laid out in the Prime Universe. Thus, I think for the reboot they wanted to give a design that would help to distinguish the two universes. They even change the uniform a bit had Starfleet adopting the Delta logo, instead of having different patches for the different starships. The Delta logo of the Enterprise was adopted universally by Starfleet following Kirks 1st five-year mission of exploration, as the Enterprise was the first and only Starship in Starfleet at the time to complete it.
I saw something recently it was about Desilu Studios, we all know that Lucille Ball was the one who gave the green light to back the production of Star Trek, she also helped develop Mission Impossible. I was watching this documentary about Lucille Ball when she was the head of Desilu, they were showing the drawings of the proposed USS Enterprise, as they were flipping through these drawings, they came upon one rendering, it was the refit design, they said this one here was originally the first choice, but they went with the one we all know and love. But, I know I'm not crazy, the rendering that I saw was in fact from the time of Desilu. I went back to look for this documentary and now it eludes me.
I hate the JJ Verse Enterprise. I really have gotten very tired of Paramount and CBS and their really crappy destruction of the Star Trek Universe. Unfortunately, I don't think Paramount would allow that particular model to be made. It would be a cool model though, I agree with you there.
Everything JJ Abrams did with the new Trek was hideous. He took a epic franchise with huge depth of story, characters and meaning and turned it into forgettable eye-candy.
The problem with everything in JJ Trek is that he purposely changed everything for change sake, and not just to update things. And they changed things enough that they didn't have to even call it Star Trek. And that's what they should have done. I understand the need to try and expand the fan base, by why do that by alienating the ones you already have? As a stand alone set of movies, JJ Trek is pretty good. But as part of the Star Trek universe, they are the worst out of all the movies. And I'm including Star Trek the Motion Picture in that conclusion.
I totally agree. Hated JJ's Enterprise! How he could ruin one of the most beautiful designs in ScFi history is beyond me! I mean the thing looks like it's gonna flop over itself because the ship is so disproportionate! Just really horrible design! Plus when he showed the engineering section the first thing that popped into my mind was not 'WOW", but what the fuck is a beer distillery doing on the enterprise???? I mean seriously??? WTF??? Your telling me they couldn't come up with enough money to create a new engineering designs?? They had to use a fuck'n beer distillery?? JJ ruined ST for me and he ruined SW for me...nice job JJ.
Stuart, I remember when stuff was leaking out about the reboot, Mr. Koeners' Enterprise was the first picture I saw, I "assumed" that this was going to be the "JJ" Enterprise - Lo and behold, seeing Trek 2009 and NOT seeing that version, I was kinda bummed....
When I first saw the Koerner Enterprise clip, I thought it was actually the real teaser trailer for the movie and was blown away by what I thought was the new design, especially when I saw it firing phasers. The design was exactly right, with a modern iteration. Then I was very disappointed when I saw the J.J. version.
I came across this video a year later, but this is a stunning design. It ticks all boxes, old and new, from TOS modernized to Kelvin timeline and everything in between. If USS Discovery is going to meet USS Enterprise 1701 one day, it should be this one. So many people would be so pleased.
I think the best Enterprise design aesthetically speaking is the refit from STM. As for what a real world star-ship should look shape-wise and size-wise, it doesn't really matter what shape you choose as long as the propulsion works and it keeps the crew alive, shape isn't really important in space. I'd prefer it look better than tin cans all lined up though, but that's the way real star-ships would probably end up looking like if it were to happen.
I like the curve of the warp pylon from the secondary hull into the pylon itself. The metal won't tear so easily. If you ever wonder why jetliner passenger windows have curved corners instead of square, 90 degree corners the reason is the metal will tear more easily with the 90 degree corners.
Yo Stuart! I'm so glad to see/hear you make an ENTIRE series of Declarative Statements about Star Trek I could openly weep with joy!! Just kidding, don't get all disgruntled, just seems that your so '23rd century' sometimes it's refreshing to get a sentence without the word 'but' in it which usually means "Just erase all the words preceding the word 'but' that I just uttered". I am enjoying most of these 'TrekYards' that you've posted which I am only just now finding. Thanks for posting, ~Mark~
I'm sorry man. Gabe Koerner's Enterprise was really bad....extremely over grebbled and corrected nothing but add bulky parts to an otherwise sleak and simple design. The only problem with the JJ Prise by Ryahn Chruch was the stupid proportions and positioning.
The biggest problem I have with the JJverse redo is that there is too much wholesale changes to the technology of the federation. This was one the one Star Trek component that everyone agreed was perfect already. and of course - what they did to the Klingons was a travesty
Nuclear Gandhi the I can’t believe I’m saying this but the JJ Enterprise A is even WORSE than his original... When the first JJ ship got tore up in ‘Beyond’ I was like “sweeeet, FINALLY” and then they got the new ship at the end 😭😂
I couldn't agree more and the JJprise refit was an opportunity to get it right and it was no better at all. Why couldn't they have used Koerner's Enterpise??? what was JJ thinking??
I agree. That design is badass and SHOULD have been used in the new film. This last film, Star Trek Beyond, they do redesign the ship a little bit. So hopefully through this new universe they do in fact change the design more and more to look more like the Enterprise from TOS.
I have to agree with you on the ship design. I thought it was just me. I didn't like the JJ Abrams version enterprise; I still dont. The alternate version is far better.
That is an awesome looking ship. I've always detested the new Enterprise. And after watching 2009 Trek, I refused to watch any more movies put out by JJ, the hack.
Gabriel Koerner's USS Enterprise/Constitution-class is truly better-looking by many light-years over the Abramsprise. I'm not terribly offended by the look and design of the 2009 ship, and there are things about it I unabashedly love, but the flaws become clear when placed side-by-side. The Koernerprise adds curvature subtly to the TOS' sharp angles and rigid areas, and the effect is of a graceful sense of movement even when still. The bits and bobs associated with the first 1701 are retained, but again are gently refreshed. This would include parts like the main sensor and deflector, the swells of the saucer above and below, the fore and aft sections of the nacelles, and the cut-out for the shuttle bay entrance/exit. There's nothing here that would jar the eye if it were placed next to the original. And any new details, such as the strip down the length of the neck pylon, and the torpedo tube blisters (I presume) on the hull just below, aren't flashy and distracting, and fit well with the overall design. Abrams, by comparison, gave the Enterprise a hot-rod treatment that makes it look unbalanced at certain angles and downright homely at others. The secondary hull begins too far forward, when it ideally should align with the saucer-to-hull neck pylon, and tapers too drastically too soon. The neck itself is overly broad, and the nacelle pylons seem to be confused as to whether they should sweep forwards or back or stand straight. The warp nacelles are unnecessarily top-heavy, due to the stylistic forward cowlings and the "big blue marble" Bussard scoops. (Truth be told, I like the engines' looks a lot, but they aren't apropos for a science/exploration/ocassional combat craft. If mounted on a luxury star yacht, fans would have adored them.) The plain saucer, mid-level hull, and fancy nacelles make for a styles clash when seen from above or below. Finally, when seen from the side, the mix of elements' angles often makes the Abramsprise appear "bent" up or down from the midpoint or the engines...the mishmash of components throws off the eye, and results in a ship with unparallel lines. So, yeah. The fan version is so much nicer in general, and it adheres to "form follows function" as a craft with a five-year mission to explore, seek, and go. Abrams practically just handed the fine gal over to a Chuck Barris wannabe starship customizer to turn it into a mediocre, yet over-the-top hot-rod/car-show exhibit, with tons of chrome a chopped top, and pipes snaking everywhere from a pair of rotary biplane engines, and impossible to get inside, get licenced, or drive.
I want to get my hands on that model if someone builds it, and yes that should have been the version that Abrams should have used in his version of the franchise.
Your choice for what the Enterprise should have looked like is excellent. I would have said right on target, but they should paint a big bulls eye on JJs Enterprise and fire full photon torpedos and phasers and destroy it.
I agree, Koerners Enterprise would have been MUCH better, it does look more aggressive than we are used to (but given its for Movies i would have been okay with it, as the E also looks more aggressive) but for me it was the perfect mix of original, refit and new.
Honestly I watched the new ST (2009) once and haven't been at the least inclined to watch Into Darkness. I appreciate that they couldn't reboot the series without somehow breaking from existing canon, but the way it was done was just such a deus ex machina. On the topic of the new Enterprise, I agree it is out of proportion. The main problem though in my mind is the nacelles themselves. Simply put, they look like they belong on a ship with a 50% larger primary and secondary hull. The pylons are also annoying since they hold the nacelles too close together, a-la Excelsior, rather than Constitution. Quick test for you though Stuart, if you read this: Hold the JJ Enterprise up sideways and kind of ignore the secondary hull, and then tell me honestly that it doesn't look like it's backwards. The side profile of the nacelles actually looks more like a saucer section, and vice versa. Thinking about it, it might actually look better flying backwards anyway. Oh, and also, those weapons..... someone needs to teach JJ that having a thousand flashing pulses of light is not more impressive than a whacking great phaser beam, especially with the right sound effects.
Gabriels Enterprise is friggin awesome looking. I dont completely hate the JJ Version, I only think the warp Nacelles could of been alot better. The rest of the ship still gave me the feel that Enterprise was there. What I hated the most is what they did to engineering, I somehow doubt it would look like Neenah Foundry on a Starship. In my opinion, the best engineering section was on the refit Constitution Class of the "normal" timeline. However the most intimidating warp core has got to be the Enterprise D. Its in the dark, massive, and sounds like a giant heartbeat,it has that, dont mess with me or ill breach look.
I believe that JJ was so intent on making Star Trek different from the original that he felt he had to make the ship look entirely different and still be a Star Trek starship. I also do not care much for the way he made the Enterprise look, but I also do not like the Enterprise-B or the Enterprise-C. The -E is ok, sortof, the -F is barely acceptable, and everything after that does not even apply as far as I am concerned. Riker's Dreadnought version Enterprise is interesting, but I never liked the idea of 3 nacelles to begin with.
I agree 100% they didn't have to redesign the enterprise there's no reason for it, (not even the "it's another timeline" crap) the original designs would have worked on cinema with just a little fx, and lighting.
the problem with JJ he's a Star Wars fan doing Star Trek
I agree with you Stuart! Why did they change the size of the ship? I also have a big problem with the inside of the ship. A beer brewery, really, are you kidding me? Giant beams with rivets! JJ prise is a Hollywood diva....top heavy, and emaciated everywhere. And don't get me started on the interiors.
JJ killed two of my favorite franchises. Then Ryan Johnson pissed on star wars grave.

Someone is trying to compensate with the larger thicker girth of the nacelles on the JJ Abrams Enterprise.

unfortunately, I am a optimist, and hope the next installment will be a better and new direction. I hope they fix the enterprise, and make it a STAR like the TOS and movies. that one shot, in TMP, where the ENT, exits the VGER cloud, and the is a sunrise on earth, ALL WAYS BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE.
Mark Plott Dear Stuart (Captain) Foley, I love the Enterprise, no bloody A, B, C, D or JJ !
Still a NO, you can do a TOS style Enterprise without sending it to Tromaville.
A miracle to me is also why the new ship has to be so much bigger.
1701 movie and 1701 A look best in my opinion.
the 3 things i hate about the calvin line starship called Enterprice is it would have been better if it had been a ship of an enemy . enterprise are the ship it self , the engin room looks like it is a basement of a high rise from the 60s and the shuttle bay looks like they ran out of money to bild a real set . this ship inside and out is a desaster . being 60 years old and a fan for as long as star trek has been on the air i feel insulted by this ship, if that is what it is. it would have been better used as a new enemy dhip against the federation .
Looking for a 1:350 scale model of the refit ncc 1701
What happened to the nacels? They look absurd on the JJ Prise, big fat bloaters! I hate them so much.
Assuming that the Enterprise is destroyed (again) in Star Trek Beyond, does anyone have any info on the looks of the new Enterprise A?
j.j. abrams uses "it`s in an ulternate universe",the kelvin timeline".,as an excuse, trying to pull the wool over fan`s eyes, so pathetic!,i liked the movie.but I believe you are right.it isn't canon star trek,or star trek really.he used this excuse to mess up everything he could get his hands on that we fans liked and enjoyed most.
Did you ever find this ship in model kit form?
If I was remaking Starfleet Command (or some other game based on SFB) I would totally use that design for the FED Heavy Battle cruiser.
Seems like he actually was trying to eff things up.
... Bro, you were totally nitpicking right there... 😏
I agree 100%...That enterprise would have been alot better, BTW my favorite Enterprise is the C refit!!
I too have always loved Gabe's design and wished it had been in the reboot films. He's a good person to talk to. I too wish there was a 3D printed kit of his design out there. I as well would love a physical kit even if it's 3D printed.
Yup. The new version looks like a hallucination. The original is always the best!
I like it better. I do not like the JJ enterprise
I will Never look at JJ Trek as Legit Star Trek. Only as one of the Alternate Realities.
Schardt Cinematic Productions Believe it or not, it is an alternate reality.
it IS an alternate reality idiot
The only problem is unlike the “alternate timelines” introduced in some episodes and subsequently erased at the end, “alternate realities” stick...
lmao t IS an alternate reality
The variation on the TOS design I liked the best is Madman's Defiant. It has alot of the best points of the TOS and TNG versions, though I do love Gabriel's too. :)
the jprise had transwarp drive........ only problem was it was not explained BUT look at the similarity to the borg transwarp
What do you think of the JJ Columbia that is floating around youtube?
Because it is an alternative timeline, the design size of the starships is pretty much open game to not having to stick to the design expectations laid out in the Prime Universe. Thus, I think for the reboot they wanted to give a design that would help to distinguish the two universes. They even change the uniform a bit had Starfleet adopting the Delta logo, instead of having different patches for the different starships. The Delta logo of the Enterprise was adopted universally by Starfleet following Kirks 1st five-year mission of exploration, as the Enterprise was the first and only Starship in Starfleet at the time to complete it.
Have you done a Trekyards episode on this version?
I like your 80's music metaphor Yes, They used a Boy George when they should have gone with a Peter Gabriel.
I agree with this version. The Abrams Enterprise was awful!! Inside and out, it's a nightmare.
Is Eaglemoss maybe going to do a variant Enterprise like they did with the Enterprise NX01.....If not maybe we could maybe talk them into making one
I agree with you the JJ enterprise is crap built on crap other then the primary hull the rest of it needs to be trashed and started over
I always felt that JJ took the Enterprise and purposely messed with it since he was all Star Wars prior to this just to be like, "What now Trekkies?"
Axanar nailed the design elements. Most of the shots seem like they're a direct slap in the face of JJ's design.
If you come across that model kit, I would like to hear about it too.
Stuart: do you like the TMP version?
GABE KORNERS DESIGNS WHERE THE COOLEST THINGS EVER SO SHUT UP!!
Emperor Doge
Over detailed, excessive surfacing and dark overtomes do not make the design any better.
+saquist yeah it not like the other ships had that property's cough enterprise-d cough
Emperor Doge
Probert's Galaxy is the most thought out ship in Trek and likely near the top in SCI FI. That's follwed by Intrepid Class
JJ Prise - Ncells weird shape - bit of the secondary hull were the cells connect way too small. Looks unbalanced.
My personal favorite is the Galaxy Class, and the Ambassador Class is also pretty cool. But the Constitution Class is still a classic.
The biggest problem I have with the JJverse redo is that there is too much wholesale changes to the technology of the federation. This was one the one Star Trek component that everyone agreed was perfect already.
and of course - what they did to the Klingons was a travesty
Are you glad they destroyed the jj enterprise in beyond and now they're making the enterprise a
They carbon copied the same design. It is just as bad as before.
Nuclear Gandhi the I can’t believe I’m saying this but the JJ Enterprise A is even WORSE than his original... When the first JJ ship got tore up in ‘Beyond’ I was like “sweeeet, FINALLY” and then they got the new ship at the end 😭😂
What did you think of Madkoifish's re-imagined Enterprise? I like Gabe's too but I like Madkoifish's more.
Is that the Hotwheels model???
I couldn't agree more and the JJprise refit was an opportunity to get it right and it was no better at all. Why couldn't they have used Koerner's Enterpise??? what was JJ thinking??
Gabriel's Enterprise looks terrific! I agree with you. It should have been used in the JJ Movie!
I agree. That design is badass and SHOULD have been used in the new film. This last film, Star Trek Beyond, they do redesign the ship a little bit. So hopefully through this new universe they do in fact change the design more and more to look more like the Enterprise from TOS.
Gabe Rules-! I'D LOVE -- AND HAVE WANTED TO SEE HIS NCC-1701 SINCE I FIRST SAY HER.
D.A.
I have to agree with you on the ship design. I thought it was just me. I didn't like the JJ Abrams version enterprise; I still dont. The alternate version is far better.
That is an awesome looking ship. I've always detested the new Enterprise. And after watching 2009 Trek, I refused to watch any more movies put out by JJ, the hack.
sucks to be you
that ship looks so much better then the jj-prise
Agree. I'm old school. The link to the blunders is no longer good. Wish I can see it.
TBH the TOS version enterprise (Not the Refitted) looks like a longer can of coke with a giraffe's neck
I agree with you Captain! By the way, what does the acronym 'LCARS' stand for?
I believe that JJ was so intent on making Star Trek different from the
original that he felt he had to make the ship look entirely different
and still be a Star Trek starship. I also do not care much for the way
he made the Enterprise look, but I also do not like the Enterprise-B or
the Enterprise-C. The -E is ok, sortof, the -F is barely acceptable, and
everything after that does not even apply as far as I am concerned.
Riker's Dreadnought version Enterprise is interesting, but I never liked
the idea of 3 nacelles to begin with.
I agree 100%
they didn't have to redesign the enterprise there's no reason for it, (not even the "it's another timeline" crap)
the original designs would have worked on cinema with just a little fx, and lighting.
Will admit was shocked first time seeing the new ship, and now seeing Gabriel's ship.... JJ hire that guy now!
