  • When a fire occurs, it's crucial to find out what caused it to help protect people in the future. That's where the Fire Investigator steps in. Max from Kings College is spending the day with Senior Specialist Fire Investigator Todd O'Donoghue to learn more about this fascinating job.
After learning some basics from an interactive computer programme, Todd and Max are soon called out to take a look at how a house fire has started. Todd shows Max how to identify where the fire began by investigating the char patterns left behind. From what he notices, Todd believes the fire was started intentionally and brings out a special detector to test the area where he believes the fire started. The police are then called and evidence is collected to be sent for analysis.
Another fascinating aspect of the Fire Investigator's job is re-creating scenarios to learn how they can be stopped from happening again. Todd explains a family had been badly burnt when the gas cooker they were using on their boat exploded. He sets up a test scenario to try find out how the explosion happened.
A Fire Investigator role is a great Fire Service career progression for those with an inquisitive, enquiring mind, good communication skills and a desire to help others keep safe from fire.
