When I first saw the video I didn't like it because of all the negativity. After that wore off I watched it again and am very thankful for it so I gave a like. My brother got one as partial payment for work he did dealing with heating and air conditioning. He never ran it 20 minutes in the past maybe 3 years or so. He just gave it to me for all of my work, which he didn't have to do. But I'm thankful because I had to sell my Ford 4000 with a loader and 3 pt hitch Sherman backhoe. I'm ready to dig in and get it going. Its very heavy with all of the wheel weights and roll bars and Bradco 11hd hoe. I may be driving it home but its 12 miles of country roads and it sat for a decade before he got it.
The problem with these tractors is the electrical system design. You are correct about all of the fires. A heavy gauge wire runs from the starter across the tank to the ignition switch then to the intake manifold heater(10 amp draw) and lights WITHOUT any relays. I've had mine for a month and dug into it. The ignition switch has been replaced and the area above the tank is a rodent heaven-complete with balcony, view of the ocean, and time shares.
I have a 335 I believe still chasing numbers looks a lot like yours but a lot of the things your talking about were improved my loader was added though base tractor was blue then painted yellow ,in the process of restoring just finished painting it came out nice
I have a ford 340 industrial tractor with front end loader and rops and clamshell fenders and yes I got it cheaper since the wire harness caught fire and burned from the steering wheel to loader bucket I repaired it and it is a good tractor
I know you have sold your 340 but i just purchased one. Like you said the longer gear shift handle just spins around. Did you ever use the PTO on yours or the 3 point hitch. Also is there a way to check the hydraulic fluid for the loader. i only see one place on the left side that you could remove a plug that has a little breather on it where you might add fluid. Overall I find your video very informative. thanks for making and sharing it.
Yes there is a dip stick on the bottom of that breather on the left side about 2 feet long, I had the backhoe connected to the 3 point, it worked well, very strong, very heavy, well built tractor, I only sold mine because we moved 2 states away, to big and heavy to ship.
I had one of them for over 20 years and put at lease 2000 hr per year and the only problem I had was the bars come from the front end back to the side of the transmission. The bolts would come loss or break. I used it heavy in commercial landscaping and had to replace the injectors once. It was a great tractor. Makes me wonder what kind of abuse this tractor had.
Thank you. My brother got one that sat for 10 years and started it right up. He hauled it to his camp and there is sat for 2 years. He just gave it to me yesterday. So I'm all fired up getting ready to get it working right then ran into this video which is really a buzz kill. lol Thanks for the positive reinforcement.
Hi Jimmy, yes this is a hard tractor to find, I took mine to some tractor shows, most people had never seen one, I sold it last year for 12 thousand dollars.
Holy sh*t. I inherited a 1980 340. My dad had many tractors, but this one was my favorite from day-one, when I was ten years old. It has about 3500 hours. This tractor is bullet-proof.
Wow, just ran across you video while looking for help with a no start on my old 340. Mine has the factory loader, flat fenders, ROPS, and a very worn loader control lever. Do you have any idea of value for these 340's???
I'm getting ready to replace the water pump on my dad's. He doesn't seem to think I can do it without taking the whole front end off but I think it can be done.
I believe if you’re going to fix something, you should fix it right and paint it, that way it’s a forever fix, right now I am doing a ground up restoration of a power king 1614, fixing and painting every part as I go, I have two videos on that already and will be making more as I go.
Lots of great information Jerry, thanks for the video. Looking to purchase one of these myself here soon. Is it safe to say that Ford had most of these problems straightened out by the time the 340A/340B/445A/445C/445D were out? I can't say I've heard many complaints from guys running the later models. I grew up on 445A's and a 445D which never seemed to have these issues aside from the wiring fire under the dash (which you'd think they would have straightened out early on). It seems the later models had much improved steering.
What is the link( drag link, tie rod) called that connects at bottom of the steering spindles tire to tire. Where can I buy a new one? Mine has a long rod with permanent tie rod (passengers side)and the other side( drivers) is threaded like tractor. 2:20 in your video you called it a tie rod. I need the whole set up. Any help be appreciated.
Hi Brian, yes you can get a manual on line from a web site called (the manual store) just do an internet search for ford 340 tractor manual you should see it, it most likely caught on fire from the wires on the fuel tank I talk about in the video, that is a hard tractor to find, I sold mine for 12 thousand dollars, not sure what your into but I have several other videos out there, just do an internet search of my name Jerry Terburgh after the search results come up look under videos, I have 16 of them, nice to here from you and good luck.
I am inquiring about the steering link bar, I tried locating the parts you listed but there far more specs being asked when ordering parts. 2wd,4wd, automatic, standard. The drag link and tie rod ends are available just need a little bit more information though can you shed some light on this?
I looked up the spec sheet for tie rod ends on the computer, but you may be able to get one from the auto parts store??? it look me two or three days, to match up the parts I needed to the spec sheet, and got the part number that way, I took the part number to the auto parts store and they told me what it fit. it was a lot of work.
They went a little too far with their planned obsolescence. What were they thinking? This equipment is bought to be used. It's immediately put to the test!
I bought one of these and currently have it at a guys place getting fixed. Paid 750$ for it and it has 120 hours on it. Caught fire somehow a few years ago at work and they were going to scrap it. Do you know any place where you can download manuals for it?
I have one with the clam shell rear fenders. It’s a 79 or 80 model. I can find a pressure plate and a clutch disc but it has a giant release bearing made by ford motor co. that is impossible to find for a 340. Easy to find for a 340A and 340B. They always list it with the A and B but they are smaller than the earlier model. Guess I’ll put the old one back with a new clutch. Any suggestions?
I had some luck at the New holland dealer they bought out ford, you might try finding a name and part number on the bearing, research it that way, the part number may change a few times, some of the parts where made by other venders, and fit more than one tractor, good luck, they are a nice tractor, sold mine for 12 thousand, he was happy to get one.
@@jerryterburgh9425 I’ve tried to find any type of number on the bearing but all it has is there abbreviations for Ford motor company. The way I understand it now fiat owns ford new Holland possibly with CNH. Either way they’re not in the USA. I will probably just give up and put the old bearing back in and sell the tractor because it’s just too difficult to find parts. Thank you for the quick response.
Call all states Ag 866-609-1260 it shows they have 2 types in stock, new holland bought ford out, I’ve ordered several parts from our New Holland dealer, costly but they got them,@@joereinhardt5358
Jerry- I was wondering if there was a way I could message/email you and pick your brain? I have questions on the the spindles you used for this. I have the same tractor with the same issues.
I purchased a digital caliper, purchase some on the web that were similar, but a little larger, took them to a machinist, and had them turn it down, I don’t remember what they were off of, but it was difficult to find ones that were similar
@@jerryterburgh9425 In your comments you mentioned they were off of a Ford 8240. What about the ball bearings for the spindles? Did you just measure as well? What had to be machined down? The king pin shaft to slide into the tractor?
Yes, good tractor, it has more horse power and has an 8x2 trans, you can look it up on tractor data.com that will give you a lot of information about it, also look at tractor house .com that will give you a price range, it mostly depends on how many hours are on it. 2000 hours would be low 5000 hours would be very high.
Jerry. That was a good informative video. Thanks. I have a 340 with loader and a backhoe. I'm located in southern Miss. I have a clutch/pressure problem. I can't shift. I drilled a hole in the bell housing, figuring the clutch disc was stuck to the flywheel. I pounded a flat screw driver in, all the way around, to free the clutch disc from the flywheel. No help. I'm going to remove the rear end and probably replace the clutch/pressure plate. Any thoughts?

Very interesting. I thought all the ford tractors were good and very well made.
Thanks for the review. It gives me some things to look for on my 340. Tim

Oh yeah, it came from the factory as a backhoe and was first owned by the township.

engine oil fill is on the right front, trans oil is in front of the shifter, hydraulic - rear end oil is behind the seat on the right

If the fan shroud is still on there you will have to pull the radiator, if not you can do it
I do the same thing that you do... if I repair something on my tractor, I paint it.
It looks nice and then I know that I fixed it before.
