Hey, great video. I worked at the Cat dealer in Miami (Kelly Tractor) for 35 years and have since retired. I did mainly hydraulics- all the transmissions that came in, hyd pumps, converters and valves. I loved the job and it looks like you love it too. Keep up the good work and the good videos.
Ben I worked in a cat dealership for 15 yrs. in Atlanta I started in the main shop as a tech. And worked my way up to the rebuild shop or some places called it a spec shop . I started off doing engines and then moved to transmission and gears . The shop pulled them out sent them to us and we rebuilt them then put them on the dyno and sent them back to the shop. Best job I ever had .......
I love how immaculate you keep your tool chest (at beginning of video). I am the same way. Attention to detail leads to a great career with no limits on success! Funny how I bought the same Milwaukee headlamp last weekend! A great quality, lightweight lamp at a nice price! Excellent video......thanks for giving us insight into your work!

New Generator mechanic here former heavy truck and heavy equipment mechanic For 10+ years. My boss is a former Cat Gen Master tech. We work on quite a few cats, great engines for generators! Awesome video! Rare to get any inside footage inside a dealer like this. Seems like Cat is especially secretive. Keep up the good work. Looks like your a multi-talented guy! I was a mobile heavy truck mechanic for almost 5 years and was in a shop the rest of my career. Being a generator mechanic pretty much means your 100% mobile. It’s pretty awesome being out on your own fixing stuff. More maintenance then repairs usually. Pretty easy job and great pay. On pare with what you guys make or better. Plus it’s easier.
j_k_adventuring Good to here from you! I am actually currently working with our legal department to see what I can and can’t show in my videos. Hopefully all goes well and I can show more.
I red that in some of the other comments. Good luck! Hopefully they’ll allow you to continue! You seem extremely knowledgeable and well versed for only 5 years in the field!
Christian Beyer hopefully your get the opportunity to move up as quickly as possible! I always told the newer techs, it’s great to be well rounded and learning everything, but what you really want to focus on is the diagnosing part! You want to be a drivability guy and get out of the trenches eventually! I’ve worked with a lot of guys who have destroyed there body over the years working hard trying to make a honest living. That’s why I got out of the dealer world and went into the heavy truck/equipment world. Didn’t really change much for me so I kept looking and stumbled upon this Gen tech job. They’re just engines on a stand essentially so it really narrows down your skill set. But having the ability to diagnose is the most important part! It seems like you like what your doing, so more power to ya! But if your ever not liking it, just no there’s lots of other opportunities out there!
I really appreciate you making this video, seeing as how I am a Highschool student who will be attending the Think Big Cat program this fall after I graduate, it’s cool getting a little bit of a glimpse of what I’ll be getting into.

Hey man nice video! Just some more information on those articulated trucks if you don’t already know, I work in F/S for CAT in Arizona and I’ve done a bunch of these transmissions in 735, 740 & 745 B’s & C’s for transmission problems... slipping or clutch fill calibrations. Don’t forget your service letters on these transmissions they are a know problem over here everything the ones that have be reworked are starting to fail in the same way all over again. Hopefully CAT will get these figures out and fixed for good.
Thats awesome to get to watch you guys are the difference between a good dealer and a great dealer. I'm not sure if CAT does this or not but I've noticed with some of the newer sales personal they are really knowledgeable on the tech of the machines but it seems they would benefit from some lessons from the mechanics going over the mechanical side of each category of equipment. It goes a long way with a buyer to feel like they are working with someone that actually has some time invested into understanding a particular machine.
I'm an aircraft mechanic and I use a Fenix HM65R rechargeable headlamp. If your headlamp ever fails I recommend the Fenix. Extremely bright and the charge lasts forever
If anyone wants to become a diesel mechanic, I would not go to school for it. You earn while you learn with places like Love’s truck stop. They’ll start you off as a tech, doing tires and filters, and roadside, then give you more and more responsibility. We also only do light mechanical (like airbags and fuses, not putting whole transmissions together, etc.). Your take-home pay, and later your commission, will be more than most any garage, I guarantee you. Schooling may take you 9 months, and 10s of thousands of dollars, or you can achieve the same in a year, and get that hands-on experience which means more to an employer than a school certificate.
@@Houd_Vast Do you just walk in and talk to the service manager and express your passion for becoming a diesel mech and let them start you on anything and work your way up?
@@Isaac-muntz it worked for me. I don’t know how likely it is, but if they’re short-staffed, they might give you an interview that day, or at least set you up with one. How you introduce yourself and first impressions mean a lot. There’s places that’ll start you on simple tires and oil chances, and train you up how they want you. We have people coming in from mechanic schools that didn’t know anything. Once you’re in, have a mechanic teach you something simple like breaks, that they don’t like doing. If you’re cool with the shop manager, you can work on those jobs and give the labor to the mechanic. It’s something you learn over time, so one’s you get down drum and rotor breaks, then you’ll know how to replace a wheel drum, or the wheel hub if it’s leaking, because you’ve worked on tires, rotor and breaks. Sometimes you’ll get a roadside, find out an airline is cut and it’s not just a flat tire, so you come back after replacing the tire, and the mechanic goes out. If it’s not busy, ask to join the mechanic. Replacing an airline is easy, and if you’re doing roadside starting off as a tech, it’s more knowledge for you. Keep building like that. Retired for 10 years now, but put in 45 years as a Cat mechanic so I have to ask the question on the haul truck...I’m sure you did, but did you make sure there was no coolant contamination from the transmission cooler? As you know, it doesn’t take much coolant contamination to gum up the works in those transmissions. Nice vid, nice shop and I can see why you moonlight with that Snap-On setup you’ve got there 👍👍👍
Siskiyou Woodsmann yes, that was another possibility I kept in mind. And we did change the cooler. The only issue I would see with that is the fact that transmission oil pressure is running at much higher psi then coolant pressure so the transfer would most likely be the opposite direction.
Christian Beyer , Your correct when the machine is running, but not when it’s shut down with zero oil pressure and 15 psi coolant pressure, that’s when the transfer takes place☝️🤔

@@loganchampion8001 I was a 91B as well good times with my unit. I'm out now. Now a tire technician and do mechanic side work.
@@loganchampion8001 depending on the weather you like and if you want to be close to wherever family and friends are I'd look into states with low income tax and then company wise find one that has good healthcare options. Anywhere you go will be fine as long it's where you want to be though

KeoSpec Awesome glad to hear it! Love the support!
Christian Beyer ,
Your correct when the machine is running, but not when it’s shut down with zero oil pressure and 15 psi coolant pressure, that’s when the transfer takes place☝️🤔
Damn, nice electrical work! And that’s from an IBEW inside wireman!
