  • Should you homeschool your kids? Annie shares her hear-felt story about how we made the decision to school our kids at home, before it was cool!

Homeschooling has become a trendy education choice for parents to make, but it didn't used to be that way. When we began homeschooling 19 years ago, it was a leap of faith into the unknown. We realized that home education is not just an intentional choice, it's a complete perspective shift, where everything can be transformed into a learning experience both for you and your kids or loved ones. Homeschooling enables each child to be unique and not be required to conform to an artificial standard. This lets them explore their creativity and just love learning.

One of the primary benefits of home schooling is you have the freedom to pause, reasses, make decisions based on the needs of the child/children! Bravo! From a family with 3 homeschooled adults who are thriving.

My most common comment to people who are new to homeschooling "homeschool is not public school at home". It is okay to spend an entire day on one subject or topic, the schedules are not as strict and the kids get more involved in things such as art, science, math, reading, etc. My next most common comment is "we teach our kids from birth, walking, talking, tying shoes, riding a bike, etc. why would we stop teaching them just because they turn 5?"

We have only started homeschooling this year with my son in 6 th grade. I think I had to unlearn the way I was taught to help him learn. I was surprised by that but now I’m starting to be more flexible with the way I teach. I too went to school for this but never entered the work force as a teacher. But I can see it gave me confidence to try homeschooling knowing what the alternative truly is. Thanks for your perspective on this. 😊

I'm 80 and I helped homeschool my two granddaughters. It was wonderful. We developed a different kind of relationship than just grandma. We learned together because of the opportunity to take them to places like weather stations, museums, gardens etc. They both had different curriculums which my DiL chose because one liked to color things in while the other hated that. It was an amazing 18 years. They both went on to college but to tell you the truth, I don't think college was a good fit for the one. I honestly think there has been too much focus on going to college and kids now are lacking in skills. Many children need to learn life skills like cooking, cleaning, what it takes to maintain health, balancing a checkbook, or income management. Set aside what else they learn at college like fear and intimidation. I know that every college experience is individual but my real job was working as a Naturopath and I had many clients tell me horror stories that were school-related. Mary Born, ND

I have homeschooled since 2002. We have 7 children; four are still homeschooled. I grew up in the public school system and NEVER heard of homeschooling. My mother was a public school teacher, yet was the reason I homeschooled. She was my support system. My youngest is in the 3rd grade (meaning in his third year of school), so I have several more years to homeschool.

I love this video. I am brand new to homeschooling (one child, 5 years old) and so I love to hear veteran moms talk out their experience. A recurring theme is the need for flexibility and to just relax, which is definitely what my type A self needs to hear. I'm curious, what have been your favorite curriculums?

In Europe u can do homeschooling only if u have a degree above what you are teaching. If you want to homeschool secondary u must have university degree! Amazing how world is so different! My aunt homeschooled her own child. And it was some out of the blue. He was so bright and intelligent. Thanks for yr perspective! Every child is different. We dont know everything. But when u live in a big city its very difficult to homeschool your kids, u do have to go to work everyday 8/9hrs a day. You are a blessed woman and a family having your own time for yourself!

I was a Montessori teacher for the 6-9 age group and 9-12 age group. I worked in Illinois schools both private ...and the last 11 years into the public schools. I was trained in Maryland and Florida for both levels of age groups. I left the teaching in 2011. At that time I saw what was coming down the pipeline. The "social justice" ideology was starting to be pushed. At first, I did not see it as that damaging. As it developed, I knew I had to leave. Students were being "dumbed down". I loved Montessori and was insulated by the changes, but then they came for that, too. One can get training online now for Montessori and I highly recommend it. However, the older students do crave social interaction with peers, but it must be monitored closely these days. Maria Montessori actually taught that sending teen students to work and live on farms was the best thing for them during those teenage years! You are ahead of the game! I am leaning towards Classic Schools. I believe one may be in Wheaton and another in Naperville. Looking at the curricula of Classic Schools might be helpful. Scheduling a time to go and observe in a few classrooms of a Classical school might be helpful as well. Just say you are looking for alternatives and would like to schedule a time to observe and look into the curricula. You do not need to make a commitment.

I appreciate your insight on the subject. I would like to learn more about how it works. Like is there a syllabus that they need to follow for their age/grade? Where do you get the learning materials i.e. text books or from a website? What kind of tests do they take and how does that process work?

Yes…that was the statement I got all the time, when I was homeschooling my children. People would say, “your kids want know how to socialize.” My daughter and son are 32 and 26…they’ve never, ever had any problem socializing lol. Thanks for sharing this. My daughter homeschools my 6 year old grand daughter. 💞 She plans to do the same with my grandson, who’s 2. 💙

I have a little different experience in homeschooling. I was a very hands on mom. That being say both my boys went to public school until my youngest was in 10th grade. He went from A’s and B’s to not passing at all in any class. The high school was large and unaccommodating. My son begged me to pull him out and home school him after struggling through the first semester of 10th grade. I did because I didn’t want him dropping out. He was not a disruptive kid or anything. It was the best decision of my life. He needed more time to digest what was being taught. He graduated with straight A’s. We usedConnections Academy which is actually ran through a public school but he did all studies on the computer. We did a lot of excursions and had a lot of fun. He is a thriving young man with a full time job he likes.

Hi Annie I listened to your class lesson. That's put it. I had to work. We live in the Bay area of San Francisco. And I had to work my son. Who is now 51, had a hard time in school. We worked very hard with him. He was doing kind of what Julianne was doing. And it was very difficult, but he we finally were able to get a teacher who said stop. Let's just see where he is. Let's just see him do his own thing. And let me tell you it was wonderful. Not a home Schooler, but a teacher that was the tacular, and he's fine now like Julianne. He has a family. I'm so proud of him. You wouldn't even know he had those problems. And if it wasn't for that special person in his life, I don't know where he would have been because I couldn't do it simply because I had to work. I am so happy to watch you and watch your family. It's wonderful. I love watching all of this with your family and puts me back with my children. I also have a daughter and Gayla that had no problems and score. She just sailed through and still it's so h child is so differenthank you for this. Thank you for being there even though I'm not a home scholar. When my children were young, I do appreciate what you say and do. God bless you

Well done Annie! I found it very interesting as I have wondered about homeschooling for some time now and how the parents figure out things like this new math or how they navigate the news and current affairs with a multitude of opinions (some of which you do not agree with I am sure). The whole thing is pretty impressive in my books. I did smile when you were describing Julianne's journey as I, also being the oldest, can understand being the guinea pig (LOL) and trying things out on us. You do have a very talented family, due in part to the experiences that they have been allowed to be exposed to. Learning, even at my age, is a daily thing that is often not found in a text book and I like that about the homeschooling. I have to say though - I still think there needs to be a forest creatures in the mural - I see you planted flowers though...lol. I somehow don't think the kids have an issue with socialization.

Of course everything would work out beautifully! 😂 I organized the best curriculum, the school schedule was flexible yet challenging, supplies were organized and I was ready! Then the chi 23:00 ld/student dug her heels in !😂 I, the teacher had to change to be able to have learning take place with my children. This is so normal, to have an abnormal life in homeschooling. For me, 25 years in homeschooling with 18 more years to go(raising our grandchildren)there is joy in choosing our style of learning, making it personal for each one. Bless you all who choose this adventure!❤

I didn't homeschool my children, but they sure did a lot of learning at home. I bumped heads with the school because they wanted my child to read a chapter a day. She detested reading books (she had a learning disability we just didn't know to what extent) but she would read cook books. The school would not allow her to use that as "reading time". I told them she is reading and she is also doing math and also looking up ingredients substitutions if we didn't have something. As she got older I got her audio books for her English class. The school had an issue with that because she should be "reading". They finally found she had dyslexia and the audiobooks were recommended as part of her learning. If I could have home schooled her I would have, while my other child thrived attending school and would read 100 books in a summer. Each child is different and each has different style that work for them.

My first baby is due in May. Thank and Bless you and all the other Homesteaders that share this knowledge with us. I wasn't raised this way but I am following a more natural and traditional way of life fully believing it is the right thing to do. It's all new but it makes sense. It takes baby steps but I pray someday I'll be where I dream of being. I have a wonderful husband and the Lord leading the way. I was lost for a long time but I truly believe I am on the right path now. I've been studying and implementing what I can of this lifestyle for about 3 years now, while in our apartment paying off debt (it's extremely hard.) But it'll be worth it.

While I agree with some of this, I was taken aback by the part where she said a child learning "in tricky ways" (aka dyslexia or something else), one should "just trust the Lord."
That's not helpful for your child at all.
That said, I did like the video on butchering chickens.
I guess I'll stick to the farm videos.
