The Miserere is my favorite piece of Catholic music! I was introduced to this piece during Tenebrae at my parish and it never disappoints. Always calls me back to repentance, holiness, and conversion. A blessed Holy Week to all who may read this. May God bless you in these last days of Lent.

This piece was made famous by the fact that it was only sung by the Sistine Chapel Schola for the first hundred or so years after it was written. It ended up leaking out when a 14 year old boy named Wolfgang was present in the Sistine Chapel, probably for Tenebrae, and afterward transcribed it from memory. I believe that the Pope was quite amused by this. Anyway, it adds to the piece’s mystique. It is so beautiful, as is all of the pre-1955 Holy Week Office.

Peace to all. This is a wonderful explanation of, in my opinion, the most powerful Psalm. The Miserere is such a powerful piece. As an Orthodox Christian, we pray Psalm 50 daily in our morning prayers. The Latin version brings the power of David's repentance forward for all to share. To my Catholic brothers, I wish you a wonderful Holy Week. Pray for us sinners of both traditions so we may pray together. Forgive me, a sinner, as God forgives. Peace to all.

In the 1950’s I don’t recall ever hearing music like this. But I do recall when we went to confession on Saturday afternoon, with sun streaming in the western windows, I could enjoy the scent of candle wax and incense. These holy odors were more pronounced when the church was not as full. Still remember that as a sacred odor. As always, except for Good Friday., the candle in its red globe was lit. I still look for that candle first whenever I enter any Catholic Church.

I have long known of this piece, one of the most famous of the Renaissance. It particularly moved Mozart who heard it in St. Peter's. I never paid much attention to the text, so what a pleasant surprise (but not so surprising) to discover it is Psalm 50. As an Orthodox Christian it is very familiar. We recite it daily in our morning prayers -- it is also part of the 3rd Hour and Compline.

The story I've heard is that the exact composition was a closely guarded secret by the liturgists in the Vatican. Mozart heard it performed, once, he went back to where he was staying and wrote the whole thing down perfectly. There was no putting that cat back in the bag. Thanks to Mozart we can all now enjoy this piece.

What I'm hearing in this a "Real Genuine Repentance of a Human being/heart"...
I had a career singing. Past life as chrorist; from singing Gregorian in men choir, through great choirs, through other level of singing... and suddenly, being apart from "this past of my life".
When I'm hearing this, I feeling my tearing But, I get to realize, if God allow me my share of good paradise, where I'd love to be, singing a good part of it... in a men choir.
I believe to the Steeve Job's last word "Wow", with his big eyes; before he pass through...
There's something wonderful awaiting us if we learn "spiritual resiliance, the total surrender to God's Will"...
Knowing to give it all to God's hands.
God Has to Love us That much.

Thank you so much, Father, for explaining the context of this piece. I would love to come hear you all sing this sometime. I have never heard it with an all male choir before. We are blessed with a parish who has a very professional and enthusiastic choir who sings this every Spy Wednesday and have a soprano who soars on that high C. God bless you all.

‘Tenebrae’ is always in the plural, but has a singular meaning, so it’s ‘darkness’, not ‘darknesses’.

I have CDs of Miserere and just love listening to this sacred music. At one time, it was only sung in the Sistine Chapel during Holy Week but today it's for all...first heard about The Tallis Scholars and Miserere by Dave Matthews.

Beautiful! I've served in music ministry for 45 years, and I've never heard this piece before! We only sang in latin rarely - for ordinations, and when I had the opportunity to sing as part of an Archdiocesan Choir which was created for a Papal Mass. I like Gregorian Chant and enjoy the challenge, but I couldn't handle just Gregorian Chant.

    • @Jeff-fn2ww

Properly speaking this isn’t Gregorian chant - it is polyphonic chant. Gregorian chant is actually meant to be quite easy. Polyphony is just taking it and making ultra fancy.

I agree, but when sung with a full choir, this is the most beautiful and spine tingling. I urge you to look up a video of this song when it's sung by men and women. The high notes are unreal.

@@Pablo-gl9dj The Hallelujah chorus isn't technically a "Catholic" song, and it isn't played or sung during Catholic liturgy.

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy great mercy. And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my iniquity [Psalms 50:3] 4 Wash me yet more from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 5 For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my sin is always before me.
6 Against thee only have I sinned, and done evil in thy sight that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged. 7 For behold I was conceived in iniquities; and in sins did my mother conceive me. 8 For behold thou hast loved truth: the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me. 9 Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. 10 To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
11 Turn away thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 12 Create a clean heart in me, O God: and renew a right spirit within my bosom. 13 Cast me not away from thy face; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 14 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. 15 I will teach the unjust thy ways: and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
16 Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall extol thy justice. 17 Thou wilt open my lips O Lord and my mouth shall declare thy praise. 18 For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted. 19 The sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 20 Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
21 Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: then shall they lay calves upon thy altar." Psalm 50 ..... Yet never again, for the only sacrifice ever more worthy and pleasing to Thee is the Perfect Sacrifice of Thy Divine Son, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and His Perfect Sacrifice on His Cross. ✝✝✝
