- At St. Michael's Abbey, the Stabat Mater is sung during the adoration of the cross on Good Friday. The piece depicts our Blessed Mother at the foot of the cross of Calvary; so we follow her lead and use her suffering illustrated in this piece to unite ourselves to the cross of Christ.

"Stabat Mater Dolorosa" = "Stood the Mother, full of grief.........." the hymn of the Virgin Mary's sadness at Jesus's crucifixion......Pergolesi knew he was dying when he composed a duet piece at age 26.....very well known in the classical repetoire, his composition was originally for 1 soprano, 1 alto and a 4 piece chamber accompaniment........
