I usually buy toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at the dollar tree. I have a developmentally challenged daughter and she was going through the laundry detergent liquid like crazy. I told her over and over how to measure it out but she just didn’t get it. So I found inexpensive Purex detergent packets on Amazon. I bought two containers because they were on sale. My daughter understands “ use only one per load”. Problem solved. It has saved me so much money.

I use to do a similar thing with laundry and dishwasher detergent. I alway use to buy the cheaper powder but when my husband retired and was at home when I was at work he would put on the washing machine(sometimes with very little in it) and added twice the amount of detergent. He also did the same with the dish washer. When I realised what was happening I changed to the pods which is a measured dose. If I didn’t have time to clear the laundry I use to fill the washing machine and asked him to put it on later in the day. (Thankfully we didn’t have a tumble drier). I also rinsed pots after dinner and loaded in the dishwasher so when he added the breakfast dishes it was a full load. Some times the cheapest item is not always the best buy in your circumstance.

When our new washer was installed the tech instructed us to use 2-3 tablespoons of liquid detergent only, or a plastic child's medicibe cupful. Using as much as the detergent companies want you to can wreck your washer. They don't care about that; they just want you to kerp buying more detergent.

Hope, Dollar General and Family Dollar have a digital $5 off a $25 order every Saturday. You can stack that savings with ad prices as well as their digital coupons or other high value coupons. There are times I’ve left the store with over $50 in merchandise and paid less than $10. It’s a massive stock up deal on laundry, bath tissue, personal care items as well as groceries. Love to see you do a video on that.

When we got our front loader Speedqueen worked on, the repair man who’s been working on washers over 40 years told me to use no more than one tablespoon of detergent. He said with the high efficiency washers they don’t use a lot of water so you only need a tablespoon or it will leave residue in your clothes because they don’t use a lot of water. I prefer Kirkland brand detergent when it goes on sale. It was also a consumers report best buy!

Consider not using plastic storage bags, get reusable silicone bags and avoid the landfill w/ the plastic. The silicone bags come in multiple sizes and are able to be re-washed. Save $$ as they last vs the plastic ones to have to buy again and again. Earth Breeze is a liquidless washing soap sheet vs liquid laundry soap in plastic containers that end you in landfills. The sheets take the place f the liquids. It is only 1 option. You can cut them if you want to use less.

I discovered the Dollar Tree store in my nearby town has the detergent I use at a cheaper price and has more quantity when I buy two bottles compared to the one large bottle at my local grocery store. Honey and lemon are much more effective than cough drops which are just candy. Vinegar for cleaning, laundry, and cooking does away with all those cleaning/detergent products. Buy some reusable and beeswax-coated fabric to cover leftovers in the fridge - much better than single-use plastic bags. We do use plastic bags but they are reused bread bags. Use just one swipe of deodorant - unless one is a stevedore, lumberjack, or a mom to young kids, one is probably not going to get dirty/sweaty enough to justify slathering it on. (BTW, more deodorant does NOT make one smell less.) Wash clothes less often. Again unless one is a steelworker or a mom, washing clothes after just one use is not necessary and is harder on clothes. Cold water always. Try to wear linen clothes, if possible, too. A natural fabric is better for so many reasons.

Hope you and Larry are better soon. FYI when I had a very bad cough my Dr. Prescribed an older med called Tessalon Pearls. You swallow one small pearl with water and I had great relief from that cough which was keeping me up.

I worked in hospice for 11 years. We used Tessalon pearls for folks with intractable coughs and they are excellent. Use only at night though because your cough serves a purpose. You need to get the mucus out. It isn’t paying rent. Take mucinex for that and drink lots of hot liquids during the day.

I watch a channel called veterinary secrets. It has saved me a ton of money. For instance, my lab retriever has frequent ear infections. I know how to wash her ears but sometimes she still gets infections. I used to have to take her to the vet for $60 and then pay $60 for a little bottle of antibiotic ear drops. I knew what the problem was! When I found out that I could use Polysporin ear drops ($13) effectively instead, it was a game changer! I don’t use it often, but it’s sure helpful to know alternative treatments that work. The vet industry is so expensive!

I will add that when it comes to medication, generics are not exactly equal. Just because the active ingredients are the same, doesn’t mean the filler ingredients are. When changing brands it’s important to look for allergens in the filler ingredients. Also, different brands sometimes dissolve and are absorbed at different rates in the body. So pay attention to your symptoms when switching brands to make sure the change is worth it to you. Often times they are interchangeable, but not always.

Great video with great advice. I think it also is important to know how much of a product you use over a specific time, for example we do 12 loads of laundry a month - 2 of us in our late 70s. Also, as part of my Medicare Advantage plan I get $30/month to 'spend' on a wide variety of health items - cough drops, pain relief, toothpaste, etc - which are shipped free, it does help with spending. Also, for us, we do free home delivery or free shipping by joining WM+ & Sam's Plus - we've figured in the cost by computing gas, wear & tear on the car and our own time - BTW we do spend less because we avoid those spur of the moment purchases & we always look for sale items

I mark whats in what bag and when i empty the contents, I put in more xheese in its bag, more chicken in its bagand so on. I only replace them every 6 months. I make my own laundry soap and diah liquid using Zote soap Borax, and Oxyclean. Dont put the Oxy in shampoo. One bar lasts me 1 year. A dollar a bar at Big Lots

One way to know about how much detergent to use - do a load, then inmediately wash it a second time but do not add any soap or other product. While the second time is on the wash cycle, look on the machine and see how much soap is coming from the clothes.

I used vinegar as a substitute for fabric softener as well and learned the hard way that it is too acidic to constantly put it into washing machines. Use citric acid instead, it works just as well but doesn't destroy the tubes of the machine in the long run.

I started making my own laundry soap years ago and have saved SO MUCH! To save on fabric softener, I make it as well. Stretch it even more by keeping a small plastic container with 2-3" squares of inexpensive sponges that have been soaked in fabric softener. Toss a couple into each dryer load. Dry for a few minutes, then hang up your clothes to dry. I also make my own hair conditioner with dollar tree hair conditioner thinned way down with white vinegar. Works great! No need to buy a lot of containers that add to the landfills. I found the recipes for all these products online. You can also make window cleaners, countertop cleaners, weed killer, bug killers, the possibilities are endless. I love this stuff. Thank you for all your tips! I've learned so much!

I like to shop online at Target for items we are brand loyal to. Target will usually compile some manufacturer coupons in app that couple with their in store coupons and discounts. I always look out for when they offer a $10 gift card on a purchase of $50, the $50 purchase is usually limited to a specific department but that $10 gift card becomes a way to save on purchases for gifts or household items in the future.

I check my first aid box/kit yearly right before hurricane season. It's good to chec before the season you will need them. It's just me so it makes sense to do it before hurricane season. Maybe for others it's before baseball or flu season. Regarding the name brand being cheaper...when eggs were sky high I went to Aldi's and noticed that the organic, cage free brown eggs were cheaper than the regular eggs. I did a double take and it was significantly cheaper so I bought 2 containers. I will be checking out the companies websites for coupons. I never would have thought about that! Fisherman's Friend lozenges are the only kind of cough drop I'll buy. For detergent, I find the $$ come out best if I go with Aldi's brand, Tandil. They have one that's analogous to Tide, and one similar to Gain. What I have NOT been able to catch a break on is AA and AAA batteries, esp Duracell. They're expensive but I stay with them because off brands don't last anywhere near as long.

@@laurelosbourn6973, for the past couple of years, Office Depot offered 100% back onto their Rewards Card - just on battery purchases over Black Friday weekend. So, if you bought batteries for $20, then the next month, you would have $20 on that loyalty card to spend in store. There was a time limit in which the money had to be spent. Most of the time rewards of just 2% on every purchase are put onto your Rewards card. Here's a link to their rewards card info. www.officedepot.com/l/rewards/office-depot-rewards

I like to have diphenhydramine (Benadryl) on hand. It can be used to treat cough, vomiting, diarrhea, hives. Off label it has been used to promote sleep. I prefer the dye-free liquid form. Liquids are nice because they work more quickly (don’t need to dissolve) and it’s easier to measure a smaller dose (v breaking a tablet).
