Zombie escape/survival were the games I remember the most as a young teen back in the day (early 2010s) playing the most. Started at first on CSS but then moved on to Gmod.
Thanks for playing Zombie Survival! I've been playing ZS for a while now and had no idea these other zombie modes existed. I was "your balls" in the video. :)
I used to play a version of this called Master of Puppets, it was like the Doom multiplayer version of this exact gamemode. One guy spawns Doom enemies, the others fight them. I think you could take direct control of monsters too if you wanted. An obscure gamemode for sure, but i've seen versions of it outside of the source engine. Edit: I might have gaslit myself on the spawning enemies part, i think it was actually just a normal map with fixed enemies, and the puppet master needed to use his control ability to set traps and use the chunkier monsters more effectively. Also it was usually played on more slaughter style mapsets.
@@bulletslime5704 Get on the Zandronum sourceport (With the Doomseeker utility), and hope people are interested in playing it that day. The community is very small, and they usually stick to one or two gamemodes per day. I'd say that MOP is still player fairly regularly, but it's just a crapshoot really. When in doubt, hosting Doom servers is pretty easy and low resource cost, so you can just host the gamemode on your own and wait for someone to join.
The best thing to do as the zombie master was always to spam hulks because each time you spawn one it has a 2% chance of being a hulkshee which is a zombie with the speed and agility of a banshee but the health and damage of a hulk. Dropping one of those on the unsuspecting survivors was always a treat.
I remember there used to be a zombie survival game mode without any objective, it was just pvpve chilling, you walk around just picking up weapons and ammo from the ground and that is just it. I forgot the name but i remember that the maps where always really dark and kinda foggy
@@jonah896 Jonah mate i would kiss you right now if i could, That is exactly what i meant!! This gamemode popped up in my memory from time to time but i could never find it, these videos really gave me a hit of sentiment. Again thank you so so much
In zombie survival, there are a few maps classified as “objective maps”or “obj” but most involved having to escape. Back then they were my favourite maps but it’s the kind of thing that you’ll love or hate. Instead of surviving till the end, the humans have to reach an end destination or goal with the zombies trying to catch up to them. Park-core was common and occasionally the humans would need to build a quick fort to fend off the zombies for a short time before being able to progress. It is a shame that these maps aren’t played anymore because they were one of the best memories I had with Garry’s mod. The Jurassic park map which was filled with neon pink checkerboard textures and the pharmacy map are places that I will remember forever.
Pretty sure you're talking about those labelled as ZE (Zombie Escape) They're still really common in TF2 and it is as fun to play, but they're extinct in Gmod (aside from 2 people playing it on a Russian server a month ago when I checked)
So much of my early teen years were spent on Hells Gamers 24/7 zombie survival. I miss those days man. The community, the culture/slang. So many fond memories.
There's a source mod called Zombie Master: Reborn which is really good, but it suffers the same fate as the Gmod version. No players are left and most people don't want to jump through hoops to get it going. The devs on the project are working on a steam version but that has been in works for a long time, but hopefully it releases soon and brings back a playerbase
There are sporadic sessions a few times a week but yeah it would be nice if one server could have at least a few players around the clock. It needs more attention. And yeah, the Steam release will help because most people don't want to install a mod manually unless a youtuber tells them.
Zombie Master was originally its own Half Life 2 mod. I used to play it all the time from around 07-09. I first played on Eidolon Zealots server then moved on to Texas Death Row (TDR) server. So many good memories in that game, I get so nostalgic whenever I see it and miss those Zombie Master days.
Zombie survival is just one of those games that I’ve loved for years. The server I use to play shut down after some controversy with the owner, but the server that replaced it is something I still occasionally hop on. I know this is an older video, but some zombie survival servers have maps that break the usual gameplay, namely “zombie objective” and “zombie escape” maps. Zombie objective maps are runner maps where survivors have to head through maps, solve little puzzles, and hold points, while zombie escape maps were like that, but way more creative and more about parkour or using custom map-specific items to help your fellow teammates. Sure, I admit the game’s a little tough to get use to, (barricading is something you only should do if you understand basically everything about the game) but it’s basically the only reason I hop on Gmod to this day.
It took me a month to fully learn how to play the game, basically learning how the best players handle their props to barricade or what bosses to strategically choose for each round. When there are few players, practicing how to cad is fun
I never knew the idea of literally smelling the source engine through a monitor could be so applicable or make so much sense, but when i think about the source engine, there’s a distinct smell! It’s insane!
Let's hope this gamemode becomes more popular in the future. It's such a small community that I literally recognise 90% of the players there, including my friends who can't believe they are in a ratlobber video.
Love zs but hate how alot of newer servers fuckin add sigils and more than switch the game up.... best server back in the day imo were FearsomeGaming, hunted undead, and cloud gaming.

So i complained more and got permabanned for exposing and supposely lying but ok?. Btw "johhny moe" (some edgy superadmin) fuck you every player loves me in the community. Maybe the community doesnt like you but have to accept you huh lol🗣️
you actually made me wanna touch gmod with this video, I never heard of this game mode in gmod ever and the concept of it is actually pretty interesting. I have only 1 hour on gmod, so maybe this will make me be interested on the game again so thank you ratlobber.
I played a zombie survival gamemode but in counter strike 1.6. it was pretty fun with all those maps where you could hide and place tripmines or some kind of turret to protect from zombies. I have alot of memories with it and even met some amazing people that were nice and teached me about the strategies for hiding away from them.
Not really gmod, but Zombie Escape is seriously super underrated. I remember playing it a bunch in tf2 and css and man, the stupid stuff you can find on them really kept me entertained despite the repetitive nature of constant Mako and Train Escape (nemesis) rounds lmao
legit only clicked on this video to see if you mention Zombie Master. And you did. Good Job. I remember the standalone mod more than the GMod Version and I also remember that when Zombie Master was abandoned by its dev someone tried to do a reboot of the whole thing called Zombie Master Black, which was a way more stripped down version and got abandoned by its dev too. Also yeah, that Resident Evil thing gave me hope, but it just wasn't Zombie Master... Some games just die and leave a hole that'll never be filled again, I guess...
God i miss Zombie survival. I remember this one round, a special zombie was attacking our shitcade at the best buy in the Mall map, those black skeleton bosses. We were panicking on the store shelves, seeing them almost come through, and i just managed to get into the shitcade after running from my last post that was also fucked. In a hurry i jumped out and started to distract the big guy, and took him to a spot the others could shoot him. There i was, running around the best buy like a jackass, with a spray of bullets focussed about a meter behind me, but we managed. I even got back in the Cade and survived! There was something about that gameplay, the graphics were total shit, mechanics were not even explained, it all felt like a basement-made mod for a game from 2004 (oh... wait..) And yet there was this.. comradery, this energy. It really gives that feeling of a souped up L4D match with 40 players... Total chaos, but never felt so alive in a game....
lol i was literally on the "big boy" ZS server you were playing earlier today, and while it was a very glorious shitcade it's best to not listen to the turbosweats and just have a good time. i hope you come back someday and i can teach you to cade gud :))
There was a game similar to Zombie Master that was made in 2019 in response to the Area 51 memes back then, called "They Can't Stop All Of Us". Its on steam, though its been long dead. It had the same idea of a Player controlled horde spawner trying to kill a handful of survivors. It was really fun when I played it. I thought Zombie Master would be fun to try too; but since its dead as hell that's probably gonna be hard to do, so it be like that
Use to play the heck out of Zombie survival on the Noxnet and Hellzgamers servers. So many interesting maps that you could only see playing ZS. Smiley camp was a favorite of mine.
lol at the NA players with their big name brand servers. us on the EU servers had to play on random servers that would die out every 6 months. it wasnt until like 2016 that i started playing on a NA server (nox) and the continuity was so weird at first. the worst thing about the high ping in NA servers is that melee barely works which ruins the zombie experience
@@mil260zs i tried that and they have changed the gamemode so much, for the worst if you ask me. i wouldn't recommend sunrust to an og player that is looking to experience the gamemode once again
Awesome to see new videos on this game mode. As a fellow fan of the Gmod Zombie Survival, I thought you might be interested in checking out Barricade, a demo I recently released on Steam. It's a standalone version of this mod, and I'd genuinely value your thoughts on it, given your veteran status in the genre. Looking forward to hearing your take on Barricade, and here's to more great gaming content from you
i remember one gamemode that had a small thing going for it was ReDead. it was one of the funnest PvE experiences i've had. people with different classes, collecting resources, and barricading before the waves came to attack where the player's were centralized at. i really miss it.
Oof, i still play Zombie survival today, the first time i played that gamemode was in 2009? or 2008, i still want to remember most of the custom maps from that time, nostalgia hits me hard.
Back in highschool I would always spawn a bunch of zombies and a bunch of survivors and combine and build a barricade and see how many people would survive the zombie onslaught It was a fun time
cading in ZS is more complicated than barricading irl when there's a zombie apocalypse. It's more efficient to start as DPS, Melee main or medic, Cading is something you would do if you've master DPS and Medic and learned how other caders work. You don't mess with a sigil that's already occupied by another cader, you can be rubbered (unable to cade) if u mess with people's Cades. Cading is the most important job in ZS, so you need to make a cade that's Shootable for gun mains and accessible for melee mains and also for you to be able to repair any props you've put in said cade. It's a selfless role so i don't recommend doing it for the first time or you'll be shit on by other people.
I don't remember the specific mod itself, but there was one server called "StonedPotato's Zombie Survival", or something like that. It was such a unique gamemode, and always played on MASSIVE maps with trains, building, etc. It was there that sparked my love for lever-action rifles, since they were a 1-hit kill on headshots. That's also where I got REALLY good at aiming with the mouse nub in the middle of my laptop keyboard. Shame the server shut down, and that gamemode was lost to the ether.
Gmod classic zombie survival is probably the biggest part of my childhood of gmod growing up, it was the most addictive and frustrating experience in that entire game. And zombie was never fun to play as
zombie master reminded me a lot of arma 3 zeus servers, gives that same feeling when trying to stop a team from reaching objectives by throwing enemies at them & predicting their strategies
I really hates how modified zombie survivals are, i wish i can play the default or un-modded one or at least the one without 9 gigabytes of custom models.
I love how u make videos and all of your content. Like if you did anything else other than valve games, I think everyone would still love it no matter what.
I was addicted to a modified version of zombie survival called zombie outbreak. It was just like normal zombie survival except there were hordes of cool and unique npc zombies. These zombie weren't just reskins either they had some really cool abilities! There was also a huge variety of npc boss zombies. I tried looking for it again recently, but I think they shut down years ago. A real shame... It was honestly the most fun I ever had in multiplayer Gmod, and I haven't seen a gamemode like it in Gmod since. EDIT: Apparently they are still active! They go by Deathlegends Zombie Outbreak.
Also, the old zombie survival server you were talking about, you played when it was dead. During it's peak hours it can recieve 15+ players. In my opinion it's one of the best versions of zs. Playing with more players will enhance the experience. Years ago it had 40+ on. Zombie survival was made in 2005 I believe by a group of coders that is easily more fun than most triple A companies games. In my opinion a very under rated gamemode in gmod. It's a shame that theres only 10 servers on that are semi alive, the rest are just abandoned.
It's easy to see why it's slowly dying. This is just like what I experienced with Warhammer 40k Space Marine and Unfortunate Spacemen. Bunch of elitist pricks who spend all their free time on the game and shut down any new player who dares to try and play the game for fun. Then of course most new players won't wanna stick around, and they'll lose more concurrent players than they gain, until eventually it dies outright. It happened with Warhammer 40k space marine, it happened with Unfortunate Spacemen, and it's happening to that zombie server. Unfortunately despite how many times it happens nobody ever seems to learn from it.
@@AVI-lh6rm Modern Zombie Survival was portrayed REALLY poorly since for some reason he decided to completely forego trying any of the actually popular servers, and to top it all off he decided to play the hardest role in the game lol.
Yo a video about this. I have like 550ish hours on gmod and 500 of those are when I got sucked into playing that super heavily modded version of zombie survival for like 5 months straight. All day. Every day. Needless to say I had to stop playing before I actually killed myself from gmod salt.
Zombie master is just a port of the hl2 mod zombie master. But no one plays it anymore. There was also a server with this insane rpg like zombie gamemode. It was incredibly well made and had a skillsystem, but that was about 10 yrs ago, dont know if it still exists.
A zombie survival server/community is what introduced me to one of my best friends of 14 years now :) She and I still go to Dragon Con together every year Man I miss those days
I like using horde mod in singleplayer, you can use it for all sorts of things with a decent amount of customization and it's wave based, so you can do boss waves if you restrict an enemy to spawning that wave or make weak ez waves. Ive done Zombie invasions with lots of Headcrabs (with Headcrab mod so they can infect) and infected. And combine invasions aswell. Pretty fun if you make a base (id recommend barricade swep mod) and get some friendly npcs or enplacements.
I've got 5k hours in Gmod from years and years ago and I also never played any zombie games! I think I played Zombie Survival for a few hours once but that was it.
Been playing Gmod since 2013, first multiplayer gamemode I played was Zombie Survival. It does take experience, yes, but it’s also extremely addicting aside from that. FWKZT is very toxic at times, so I would only recommend it if you’re willing and capable of dealing with that. Sunrust is generally a bit nicer, albeit more difficult. If you want, I could realistically teach you some of the more nuanced aspects of ZS!
I'm an avid long-time player on FWKZT, and Sunrust was always mega toxic to me 😭 When I wanted to see what Sunrust was about, so around the time I joined I heard some guys say the nword multiple times. Ngl it brought me back to the old NoxiousNet days lol
There's vaguely an alternative to zombie master, though getting into it is likely going to be more than what most people would want to get working. Someone made a mod for doom called "Level Master" made by Cutmanmike. Someone even made a version of it for use with Hideous Destructor so you can suffer immensely
Zombie Survival is the most iconic but Zombie Master holds a special place in my heart, I loved that mod back in its prime, the Shaun of the Dead map was probably my favorite. I think there's a Zombie Master: Reborn project going on, not sure if that's what you played here. I have no clue how active it is, however it did have Github contributions within the year.
He was playing the gmod gamemode, which is just a horribly broken ripoff from the ZM2 era. ZMR is somewhat active and functions perfectly fine, there are events every 2 weeks, people play throughout the week. It has the advantage of a discord bot which @s everyone with a "looking to play" role, when using an ingame command to invite people who are not ingame. Nobody wants to be the first player in but once a few people join you have a solid game with 5-8 players which is best anyway.
Zombie panic source, and Zombie master, the sourcemods, are probably some of the best zombie experiences in the source engine I've ever experienced. Weird to find out similar things are emulated in gmod, which introduces bizarre levels of jank to the formula.
I know it's not gmod but zombie panic source is pretty good Oh, and I think zombie master still exists with a handful of people playing, but it's a standalone and not in gmod
I was like 14 when i played on noxiousnet zombie survival. I put hundreds of hours into that mode. In the beginning, I also made the same mistake doing cades I was dogshit and got made fun of as well. BUT I will say learning better cades from other players and finally making awesome cades that could hold points on their own was so satisfying. If you wanna get better, practice on smaller rooms attached to the larger ones (then defend it and figure out how zombies get in so you know your mistakes) that get less attention since people won't care as much if you mess that up than if you try to cade the biggest choke point and it's shit. It does kinda make you repeat that cycle of being toxic to newbies who are cading because you know so much more and it's easy to laugh at them, but honestly it was part of the fun and was all harmless. The reason I left was because I accidentally threw a molotov and it hit the wall causing everyone to get lit on fire, I felt so bad and was so afraid of getting shit on by everyone that I left before I could even hear everyone rage because back then the servers were always packed. Funniest part was I wasn't even sure if molotovs could hurt your teammates, I was just so embarrassed I wasn't gonna take the chance.
ZombieRP used to be hella fun back when people played it. If someone could make an updated version, i would be all over it just to relive those glory days
based on how much trash was put in to Zombie Survival pretty much makes Zombie Master the best for me. I would still rather play csgo zombie gamemodes tho.
Heya rat, loved your video man! I was personally very involved with zombie survival and the community around it, if you have any questions about the history or general events within the community I'd be happy to tell you!
Does Zombie Survival still end with the Godsmack - I Stand Alone? I remember being on the first server with the game mode on and coming up with strats. At the time, this game mode was amazing because there was nothing like it.
Speaking of maps on zs game mode, you should thank sunrust and midnight, because these two communities have a lot of potential for creating maps (sometimes it can be wrong)
i played some sunrust and to me it seems like most of the maps on there also existed back in the noxiousnet days, actually many of my favourites and especially the objective maps are not even on the list on sunrust, nox also lacked some of the cooler obj maps like mental hospital even in its heyday btw. the sheer number of zs maps are crazy compared to the other gmod gamemodes that play the same few maps over and over again but after a decade+ of playing zs i memorised most of the maps that any server might have
On that SUP zombie server, its mostly used by guys that have VIPs or shit like that. They use it to make stuff and they don't get raided since its desolate. I did it before, made a lot of cash, always bring a friend.

I think it's zworld afterlife
OBJ maps are still occasionally played on the biggest ZS server Sunrust, though iirc there's a cooldown so they can't be played too often
Pretty sure you're talking about those labelled as ZE (Zombie Escape)
They're still really common in TF2 and it is as fun to play, but they're extinct in Gmod (aside from 2 people playing it on a Russian server a month ago when I checked)
Zombie Survival "The Mall Of Hell" server also plays OBJ! Like Ravenhood or Mako
Recently found your channel, love the work man!
thank u brotha
Ughh they did ban me for complaining and finding actual issues🥷 I got pointsave dedicated dev to us but that want enough for me..
ZE tends to show up on ZS servers as well, every once in a while in the map vote. Pizza Escape (or whatever the hell it's called), never forget.
@@captaineldeezee1336 santa assassination I think has a pizza section

I'm fairly sure the OG Zombie Master sourcemod is still active. I played it less than a year ago and there were loads of players.
i checked,, and all of the servers are not even full, i dunno if theyre full now, but, oh well.
legit only clicked on this video to see if you mention Zombie Master.
Try Zombie Master: Reborn, Theres games every other weekend.
There was something about that gameplay, the graphics were total shit, mechanics were not even explained, it all felt like a basement-made mod for a game from 2004 (oh... wait..)
And yet there was this.. comradery, this energy.
Smiley camp was a favorite of mine.
will you ever consider playing on sunrust
lol at the NA players with their big name brand servers. us on the EU servers had to play on random servers that would die out every 6 months. it wasnt until like 2016 that i started playing on a NA server (nox) and the continuity was so weird at first. the worst thing about the high ping in NA servers is that melee barely works which ruins the zombie experience
Back in highschool I would always spawn a bunch of zombies and a bunch of survivors and combine and build a barricade and see how many people would survive the zombie onslaught
It was a fun time
This is why ratlobber is good at lobbing rats
Its always a gud day when ratlobber posts so i can procrastinate at work 👍
Thx for making this video everyone on the server was talking about it lmao
cading in ZS is more complicated than barricading irl when there's a zombie apocalypse.
Old Blizzard could have made an amazing game with the Zombie Master concept. Brutal.
The Deathlegends server was my go-to for a long time. Hella popular in its hay day which was 2012-2015. Makes me happy to know I was a part of that.
recognizing which servers he was playing during the ZS segment made me realize that i've been playing gmod wayyyy too long
I used to play zombie survival (and some others) wayyy back. This was super nostalgic great video
my favorite part in this video was when ratlobber said, "it's ratlobbin' time" and started ratlobbing everywhere
he started lobbing rats
the word "zombie" stopped sounding real by the second minute of the video
Very cool thank you ratbobbr
Very cool
This! This is where I started playing Gmod multiplayer (Zombie Survival) 10 years ago! that’s where I started playing Gmod.
Never heard about zombie game modes, it gets overshadowed by the amount of insane RP servers.
the Soundtrack of Zombie Survival is a BANGER
There was always some nerd that knew the map and plug-in way to well and would try hard the fuck out of these game modes
When did you play? @@AVI-lh6rm
@@AVI-lh6rm Modern Zombie Survival was portrayed REALLY poorly since for some reason he decided to completely forego trying any of the actually popular servers, and to top it all off he decided to play the hardest role in the game lol.
its a shame zombie survival gets very little players, its very fun
I don't think this sponsor is really it bud.
Bro man is literally sponsored by one of those survey scam sites you got send to when trying to pirate a game in 2014 hahaha
The good news is is that Fun Pimps is making a 7 Days to Die versus game that supposedly is going to function like Zombie Master
Bro i hope so. I sound like a crazy old man telling people about Zombie Master
Ratlobber has such a unique sense of humor I love it
Yo a video about this. I have like 550ish hours on gmod and 500 of those are when I got sucked into playing that super heavily modded version of zombie survival for like 5 months straight. All day. Every day. Needless to say I had to stop playing before I actually killed myself from gmod salt.
Old school Noxousnet Zombie Survival was peak gaming for me back in the day
Best intro I’ve seen on UA-cam for real and great background music big respect for that alone
Zombie master is just a port of the hl2 mod zombie master. But no one plays it anymore.
There was also a server with this insane rpg like zombie gamemode. It was incredibly well made and had a skillsystem, but that was about 10 yrs ago, dont know if it still exists.
I used to play a shit ton of zombie survival, it was the only online gamemode i played tons of hours on.
ratlobber i love ur eediting styleso much
A zombie survival server/community is what introduced me to one of my best friends of 14 years now :)
She and I still go to Dragon Con together every year
Man I miss those days

Considering how toxic that zombie survival server was, I’ll never touch the gamemode. I’ll be sticking to sandbox servers, thank you.
I love the server where he played but god, sometimes people are so heavy, like MAN YOU DON'T LIVE ON THIS GAME, CALM DOWN
I like using horde mod in singleplayer, you can use it for all sorts of things with a decent amount of customization
and it's wave based, so you can do boss waves if you restrict an enemy to spawning that wave or make weak ez waves.
Ive done Zombie invasions with lots of Headcrabs (with Headcrab mod so they can infect) and infected. And combine invasions aswell.
Pretty fun if you make a base (id recommend barricade swep mod) and get some friendly npcs or enplacements.

MDE Never Dies
I was crazy addicted to zombie survival, and I had the opposite experience lol, Fwkzt seemed a lot more chill then sunrust.
I know it's not gmod but zombie panic source is pretty good
Oh, and I think zombie master still exists with a handful of people playing, but it's a standalone and not in gmod
I used your free cash sponsor to buy crack
ZombieRP used to be hella fun back when people played it. If someone could make an updated version, i would be all over it just to relive those glory days
based on how much trash was put in to Zombie Survival pretty much makes Zombie Master the best for me. I would still rather play csgo zombie gamemodes tho.
O yuh streets needed dis one 🔥
Heya rat, loved your video man! I was personally very involved with zombie survival and the community around it, if you have any questions about the history or general events within the community I'd be happy to tell you!
I used to play zombie survival on the Noxious server all the time back in 2010. I even donated to the server. Good times
Bro i love this channel so much ive been binge watching it lol
Does Zombie Survival still end with the Godsmack - I Stand Alone? I remember being on the first server with the game mode on and coming up with strats. At the time, this game mode was amazing because there was nothing like it.
Nzombies is a masterpiece, countless hours making maps and screwing around with different weapons against the zombies
I’ll always miss playing Zombie Master with a bunch of dudes that I didn’t know.
If you ever get the itch, google Zombie Master Reborn. People still play, it's a bit sporadic, but 5-8 players is a good time on most maps.
Speaking of maps on zs game mode, you should thank sunrust and midnight, because these two communities have a lot of potential for creating maps (sometimes it can be wrong)
i played some sunrust and to me it seems like most of the maps on there also existed back in the noxiousnet days, actually many of my favourites and especially the objective maps are not even on the list on sunrust, nox also lacked some of the cooler obj maps like mental hospital even in its heyday btw. the sheer number of zs maps are crazy compared to the other gmod gamemodes that play the same few maps over and over again but after a decade+ of playing zs i memorised most of the maps that any server might have
Man i forgot about zombierp.. That map is so nostalgic
On that SUP zombie server, its mostly used by guys that have VIPs or shit like that. They use it to make stuff and they don't get raided since its desolate. I did it before, made a lot of cash, always bring a friend.
