@@ryanbauer8317 as a collector. Not investor, collector, I need no input from a UA-camr. I like hobby talk. Light hearted sports card talk. Geoff inserted himself into this hobby as some sort of big deal and influencer. In my circle this guy is a stain on the hobby. You can place some of the blame on this guy for $100 packs of cards.

I don't collect anymore because the only cards worth value are rookies that have never thrown an NFL pass, taken an NBA on-court shot, or stood at the plate in the MLB. Unproven players whose cards are worth 1000% the value of people who are winning championships. And 90% of the time those cards are worth nothing in 3 years.
Yep. Topps Chrome used to be my favorite product. Now the only time I open it is when it comes in a subscription box or is on super sale. Prices for sports cards that are not "cardboard/card stock" are way overpriced. At least cardboard is a little affordable, but I find myself buying A LOT LESS of that as well...due to the price gouge of today. I turned to retail as a result of this, and even retail is putting less cards in boxes whilst charging more! I will not buy any retail chrome either. $40 for a blaster box = LOL!
This is spot on! Jeff didn't comment on it because doesn't cards HQ break? They have to find a better way otherwise it'll ruin the hobby by pricing the average consumer out. I just got back in the hobby this year and am already having second thoughts about staying in the hobby.
I’ve never bought into a break in my life. The amount of sports card sealed wax and retail product I buy these days pales in comparison to the amount of singles and slabs I buy.
Geoff did a good job explaining the prices, including the balance between print runs, parallels, etc. what I think he missed is how Topps is eliminating products on the low-mid range. Just a few SKUs and then you’re into expensive breaker-heavy products.
You can do the math on print runs to determine what the print run is. Then see what a dent 40 cases may be etc. I’m sure someone out there has done it - Stryker used to
280 boxes has to be a drop in the bucket. I bet print runs on most of these modern products are STUPID high. Probably similar, if not higher, than the junk wax print runs in the late 80's, early 90's......
Nothing is going change as long as people are buying them. It's flippers/breakers buying cards now. Dumbasses like me are screwed. I like pulling cool stuff from packs but I can't afford it so I have to switch to singles if I plan to continue in this hobby. I'm only 6 months in and I didn't know it was like this.
I collected from 1981 until like 1992 and on off a fee other times, but I got back into it back in 2018, and it's completely different than when I was younger.
The prices of hobby style boxes are manipulated by the shops and breakers... select 2023 football international hobby jumps from 250$ to 500+ in 2 weeks wtf
i watched Geoff's video and thought he mentioned breakers, but looked again and you were right. i agree that breakers ability to buy at higher prices is part of it. A buddy has a hobby shop and for them to get box allocation from fanatics, they had fo sell / break on fanatics live, so there's that. Thats not true for everyone, but it would definitely be a good data point for this video.
I have one trusted breaker that I use. I’m a Lions fan and 2022-23 and 23-24 were loaded with Lions rookies. Sure it was a gsm low, but I wasn’t 6,7,8, or 900 on a hobby box.
Ask yourself, how much am I spending and what is the highest value card can I pull. In almost every instance, you are better off buying scratch tickets. If you collect, you are far better off just buying singles. Idk how these hobby boxes are still being opened by anyone other than breakers
It's illegal gambling with minors. All breakers are the problem. I pay more because they run illegal operations. And yes everyone thinks they can create a new carnival game via trading cards. Look at fanatics live. Everyone talks about collecting and calling it a hobby while marketing vaults and consignment. The value will never be in the cards until the boxes go back to MSRP. They all get back door deals, the guys you are trying to credit for working at it. I remember when it was as simple as taking a picture of your store front and you could buy bulk from manufacturers. Now, it's required amounts of purchase and quotas for moving. It's not an industry promoting collecting or making it worthwhile. Add in all vintage graded is most likely juiced by thousands of juicers over decades.
I get that the boxes are getting expensive but does your theory of selling direct to consumer at a cheaper price than your LCS is going to help the LCS? I can tell you that margins are shrinking more and more on the LCS side every day, breakers don't see that margin shrinking because no one looks at the break as a whole of the cost, all the consumer cares about is that their team is at a certain cost. LCS's would not survive if they sold boxes to consumers at a discount. Everyone was/is excited for Topps to take over, I hear it over and over, "hopefully Topps will make it more affordable to open boxes," that is just not going to be the case. We are in a industry that is so unique when it comes to setting prices, Topps, Panini, Upper Deck ect ect does not set the price of boxes or cases, the consumer does. If a product, IE - Bowman Draft, is over priced, it does not sell, Topps Chrome Update, prices keep going up because more and more of it is selling... There is alot more to this story but you have to look at the industry as a whole.
It's not fair to the avid collector because I guarantee you that Panini is getting the hot boxes and cases as far as that's concerned! I'm going to say the print run goes to the breakers 80% ! Fanatics has ruined the entire Hobby!!
What topps needs to do is simply have a release date with one box you made a comment on a discount. They will never give us a discount. Come on, but have a release day with only one box for the collectors that gives us an opportunity, then on a different release date where they have a random Draw when you can buy cases of the product, which I’ve never been selected on the draw,, they do this in the sneaker market with Nike limit the product of one. Topps doesn’t have to spend $ or build hype the product is sold out in minutes Topps knows this, but they are catering 100% to the breakers, and has steered me away from actually buying boxes or even trying to anymore on their format,, everyone be safe take care, happy holidays

The overpriced hobby boxes in sports cards in general comes down to greed in the hobby people who either can’t let the boom go and miss info people about a lottery ticket.
Maybe what they should do is reduce parallels, inserts, and other special cards. Just a crap ton of base and vanishingly few hits. That'll kill breaking real fast, as the odds of getting anything good will get even worse than they are now. Don't lower prices immediately, just make boxes have so few hits it's not worth it. (Well, even _less_ worth it) Then, maybe, we'll have the crash in the gambling aspect of card collecting that we desperately need. People will go bankrupt chasing the few hits and hopefully join Gamblers Anonymous to get the help they need. And everyone but set builders will be gone. And then, after all that, they start cutting print runs. It's a stupid, crazy idea, but maybe we need it.
No one needs breakers to get simgles.......oh my how did we did it in the past! Not part of the game. Stop buy the shit for the gauged prices on boxes. Phahaque Em!
