    Thanks for showing what really goes into catching special fish. The grim reality of the resilience it requires is often brushed aside for highlights, but this made the capture all the more special. Top work!

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому +1

      Henry Bennett Thanks. Wanted to keep it real. Was a bit worried that the blanking bits of the video would be boring but I think it gives the capture some context. I often see my fellow anglers putting loads of effort into their fishing, so they will know where I’m coming from. I hope it’s watched by someone that’s got a goal, but is going through a tough spell and it motivates them to dig their heels in and catch a fish of a lifetime. That would be perfect :)

      @@Lifeonthebank hit the nail on the head. Less of a tough patch with not catching, more not being able to fish at all! A gap in the storms will come soon and then it's back to the river. Can't wait.

      Definitely toughest perch season I’ve had, constantly battling the floods to get on the river!!! Good luck when you do eventually get out! 👍

  • @ezedjay
    @ezedjay 4 роки тому +16

    Nice Perch there Nick :) That was HUGE!
    One thing I'd recommend to everyone - when it's time for slow retrieves is slow down even more. Your slow retrieve is faster than my quick retrieve....and since slowing down I've upped my hit rates by....a lot. I now retrieve so slowly I can feel the Perch chugging the lure down in a few moves while I'm still reeling - and when it starts to feel like a snag - just lift quickly and reel faster instead of striking.
    Try it - if you don't get more fish I'll eat my hat :)

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому +3

      ezedjay I totally agree. When I watch it back I’m actually going faster than I think I am at the time. Not sure if it’s because I’m talking as I always have to concentrate on slowing myself down. It’s almost impossible to go too slow with this style of lure fishing. Thanks for the comment! 👍🎣

    • @cornettojordgubb
      @cornettojordgubb 4 роки тому +1

      ezedjay A bit late to the comments but, when IS the time for a slow retrieve? And do you guys have any tips on how to maintain a slow retrieve?
      Im sure many of us subconciously start reeling faster when getting impatient...

    • @ezedjay
      @ezedjay 4 роки тому +2

      @UCb8NZ7ZxZS4KRFq0SI-WDxg Hard to say when the right time is - you can usually figure out quite quickly what speed of retrieve is working best on any given day by varying between fast/medium/slow plus straight retrieve or retrieve with pauses or even bouncing the bottom.
      With Perch, maintaining a slow retrieve is quite easy and doesn't have to be too precise but my advice may be called out as bad advice by many. I hold the rod tip up high at a bit more than 45 degrees which seems to make it easier to retrieve slowly without dragging along the bottom than with the rod pointed at the lure. Probably because I'm constantly reeling it "up" rather than "in" with the rod tip lifted high so the lure is almost swinging back in like a pendulum that's getting slowly shorter. Bites often feel like weed with the rod slowly bending around - which I've found just reeling into and not stopping reeling hooks up well.
      Having said all that though - sometimes just dragging anything along the bottom works too.
      I suppose the best advice(and people have thanked me for this in the past) - is just try and see how slowly you can retrieve the lure. I've seen so many people casting out and ripping the lures back in - and then when they slow right down they start getting more hits. I've also found that on days were they will chase fast moving lures they will also take slow moving ones. Not the opposite though - if it's a day where they prefer slow retrieves it's basically pointless doing fast retrieves.
      All this of course is just my opinion and experiences during 40 years of fishing so please take it with a pinch of salt and just experiment - the worst thing is trying to stick to some kind of rule or method in lure fishing without changing it up and trying something different. Lure fishing is all about exploration of both the water and what is triggering the fish. There's no rules(apart from make sure you are ready to hook Pike and land them safely when you're Perch fishing - too many people fish in waters with Pike and don't use traces for example).
      Oh - and use barbless hooks. Again - just my opinion. I've never had any problems with barbless hooks - people seem to think they fall out but I can't say I've ever noticed that happening.

    • @stephenholland132
      @stephenholland132 4 роки тому

      Yeah I tend to take my time reeling them in, sometimes just gently tapping the rod butt to make them wiggle but not move along the bottom. Only used them on canals so far, but will try them on the Severn this winter.

Easily the best produced and edited videos containing by far the most useful information. Great Perch, agree the Ned is fantastic in Winter. Usually out-fished by other lures in summer.
    You want to watch the light Fluro leader, I’ve caught plenty of pike on the ned. They often hit it on the drop. Eventually fluro will get bitten through, to the detriment of the fish.

    Great video and great fish Nick. I’ve been fishing the Ned a few years now and all love it, a four season bait for sure. I travel light with just a few packs of Ned’s and some 5-7cm cranks (Westin) it’s the best way to fish. Lure fishing is like fly fishing in the sense of its all too easy to carry too many options, reduce the options and learn to work the baits.

      Ben Price Thanks! I’m a little unusual in that I use a bit of backwind and a bit of drag. In some situations I just use drag (big fish caught in the edge has to be drag as they take off so fast!) Not sure if there’s a right or wrong way ... you’ve just got to understand the limits of your tackle and give the fish line when it needs it. Thanks for watching the video and for the comment!!!! 👍🎣

    Those were some lovely Perch Mate. Here in Australia, we call them Redfin. I didn't know the ned rig was a thing in the UK, I thought it was still just an American bass fishing thing. We don't have many ned rig jig heads and worm plastics here in Aus but I suspect that will change soon. I would love to try the technique as there are some good Perch (Redfin) near me. Cheers.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 роки тому

      Hi mate and thanks. I've found that the rounded jig heads enhance the rig but arn't necessarily essential, as long as the lure is nice and buoyant! Good luck catching those Redfin!!!! Thanks again.

      Hi thanks for watching the video and for the nice comments :)
      I use several rods in the video and they are all light lure rods.
      - Sonik LRF Rockchamp, 7ft 1g-8g
      - Savage Gear MPP2, 8ft 3g--14g
      - MTP Super Nova Zander Finder, 7ft 5-18g
      I've actually done a recent review of the MTP and here's the link below (that's the one with the cork handle that I had the big perch on at the end of the video):
