Breathe in 4 seconds, hold 4 seconds, breathe out 8 seconds. Pull your belly button in on the exhale. Do this a couple times and enjoy the relief. I hope this helps you.

Thanks for this. If you could say the technique first I would appreciate it. Then you could go into the scientific for those people who have the headspace for it!

This relaxation sigh must be wired in. One of the very few times I was suddenly stressed with a high heart rate was when on a very dark two lane highway a local constable sped up behind with no lights then when very close turned on all his light, including the red and blue flashers. I stopped normally but then instinctively breathed with extra long inhales to get my crazy adrenalin and heart rate down. I do not think that this officer appreciated my calm demeanor. He was alone in the middle of the night trying to generate cash from speeders and other follow-up violations and all I had to show was a burnt out tail light. He was nice enough to let me off with a warning. He never emoted at all, no smile, no frown, he was a lonely robot in the dark.

For those who can't wait to get to the main point- because he goes into explanations for a while- to help decrease stress (response) is to take a nice, deep breath or sigh intentionally. The exhale should be a few seconds longer than the inhale.
He explains this as a "physiological sigh".
Basically the heart rate will match to your breathing so we can consciously change it. Just hard to think of doing this in the moments we need sometimes..

Have you heard the expression, "less is more?" It took you FIVE MINUTES to get to the physiological sigh. What is your goal. Do you want to share helpful information with regular people or are trying to impress other doctors?😮

Parasympathetic is like to negate and sympathetic is like to be aware. Nicely explained video for all viewers.
In ancient Indian science of yoga it is specifically said on breathing techniques...Prana - Niyama = breathing 'timely' according to our feeling and context. They are named as Rechakam, Kumbakam ( like Medical Valsalva maneuver ), Brahmaram, Brahshtikam, Seethkaaram, Seethalam etc, where Fast or Slow inspiration or expiration through nostrils - One nostril closed other open or both nostrils inhale and exhale either same time or alternatively or inspire and expire through mouth the air TOUCHING TONGUE....all with Aim towards increasing or decreasing BMR -the body metabolic rate, which is imbalanced to the situation due to a body condition of infectious or physiological or dynamical nature or due to External factors of stress.

So, imagine you must make a presentation, but you are nervous, your thought are flying away, will you stand on platafform and watch you living weird situation of shaking trouser, hands? Your body is saying run away from platform, so will you run?
This is a situation of stress you must deal with your mind wich you can make this exercise. Don't accept every body reation quitly.
