  • In this video you will see the anatomy of a fire department response in the 1930-1940 era. It begins with a civilian pulling the street fire alarm box and concludes with the Utica Fire Department Mechanicians working on a classic American LaFrance engine. There is footage of Engine Co. 2, a 1923 American LaFrance engine, 2 Salvage, a 1930 American LaFrance salvage rig which was converted by the UFD mechanicians from the old Chemical 2, Truck Co. 2, a 1934 American LaFrance 75' wood tiller, and Tower 2, a 1928 American LaFrance water tower. You will also see a response down the streets of downtown Utica aboard an Engine Co. and the tiller of Truck Co. 2. This was filmed at the old Central Fire Station at 235 Elizabeth St. This beautiful station was closed in 1976 when the department opened a new Central Station at 552 Bleecker St.

This was terrific! The Elizabeth Street fire station is now the Oneida County Law Library & District Attorney's office. Note the trolley tracks still in place on Genesee Street (tracks removed May 1941). Also noticed Grace Church.
