My parents emigrated from Europe in the 50s and 60s and ended up meeting at the Star Bakery where my mother worked. Grandparents worked at Mele and Utica Club. Still some of the best food in the USA can be found in the Mohawk Valley.
Wow... very nice video. Very informative and creative. I also attended Mohawk Valley CC in the 80s. Flunked out though....Lol... Went back to NYC afterwards. I had fun times in Utica.❤
Born and raised just outside of Utica (near the Seneca Turnpike!). Left long ago after finishing college. I'm not sure Utica can recover in a state with such high taxation/regulation. The good jobs just aren't there, so folks who have an education/skills often move to states with a more business friendly environment and more jobs.
Sad but true. Given the great history Utica once had, it really bugs me that politicians and their bogus self serving policies have ruined this place. It's going to take a major political overhaul to turn things around.
Thanks to decades of Democrat rule. My father owned a very successful local banquet restaurant. Company Christmas parties composed a big part of the business. They usually involved sit down dinners and an open bar. Christmas parties are a thing of the past...but...so are the companies! GE, Westinghouse, Chicago Pneumatic, Bendix, Kellsey Hayes...ALL GONE! All provided jobs that could sustain a family.
@@jamescummings6703 The crime isn't that bad. We now have the Utica Comets hockey team. The Rec-Center has been upgraded to include a new disc golf course, new pickleball court, skating rink, etc... There are two new skateparks on each side of town as well. Of course covid kind of put the hurts on things and the overall economy sucks because of these clowns in the white house but overall it's definitely not getting worse in Utica. It's the opposite. It's improving
at one time the average worker couldn't afford a house min the Corn Hill area ,Corn Hill was described as one of the most beautiful places in upstate ny to live in. Lots of money was invested in that area. Most of the rich families who lived there had streets named after them,
I visited Utica for the first time about a month ago. It was visually stunning. Absolutely beautiful. Lots of nice architecture of different styles and functions. The city is laid out in a way that is easy to navigate and see stuff.
Sentient History: thanks for posting. Saw Joe Bonamassa at Bethel Woods August 13th. Great show, lovely venue. Joe announced from the stage he was born and bred in Utica. Cheers!🥨
@jimdep6542 I had a boss who did carpet, and he said he did Joe's mother's house. During the installation of the carpet, he could hear a kid (who must've had the day off) ripping on guitar.
If the codes department did their job, the city would be beautiful. I don't live there anymore but years ago I hung out with some of those guys while they were working at a coffee shop half the day
The hospital has been a financial net positive for downtown economics SINCE opening. Who wanted to see nothing but old dilapidated and abandoned buildings with zero hope of rehab. The Columbia was abandoned with roof caving in and the Seakans hadn’t sold a TV in their abandoned building since the eighties. The boondoggle has been what was and is going to happen with the old hospital complexes, that we can definitely be in agreement to. Try renting a loft apartment in downtown area now 3k-5k. I’d suggest having lunch at The Brooklyn Pickle. Slowly but surely things along Genesee St. are getting there near the old YMCA, now the Veterans Center.
If they start voting republican sure but that aint happening.. The place is a haven for criminals and ghosts" undocumented persons". Grew up and spend most of my life there.... its gotten so bad. Not just the crime but the mentality.
Don't forget, Billy the Kid was born in Utica. Look it up if you don't believe me. Great video, you got my sub. Born here, got away several times, and ended up back.
A great book that got me interested in Utica's history during the 1880's is called "Clear the Tracks", published in 1943 about the life of Utica & Black River RR engineer, Joe Bromely, who grew up in Utica and started working at age 16 in the Utica rail yards in the year 1880. It's funny, sometimes sad , exciting , detail oriented and historically accurate. You'll hear about Schuyler Street mentioned a lot and for good reason. Names were NOT changed to protect the innocent. Even if you've never been to Utica, after reading the book you might feel like you know some people who lived there long ago. Clear the Tracks is one of my top 2 all time "feel good" books.
@@LocalNYhistory Good, glad to hear that. I have a link to a Utica phone book directory from 1883 . Not only does it show the names and addresses, but also shows what their profession was and sometimes their employers. I looked up several people mentioned in the book, including Joe Bromley and sure enough , they were all listed along with the streets they lived on. Many of the railroad employees, which there were many, lived very close to the railyard, on streets like Washington St, Water St, etc and many of those homes .....and even streets aren't there anymore., but you'll see them on old maps from that time period. If you don't mind, get back to me with a message here after you have a chance to read it. It would be fun to brainstorm some of the events, people, locations and landmarks.
Only "spectacular" parts of utica was the zoo, parkway, baseball field, aud and downtown. Oh yeah and O'scugnizzo pizzeria. At least in my lifetime. Wish i got to see it long ago in person.
Born and raised there on the Westside. Mathew Ave. Anyway, left for college and never went back. Way back in 1988..not the same place. Nothing really there anymore. But drugs
"Anti slavery movements in the area" ok buddy. Where did all the nice thoughtful people go? Their ancestors must have moved elsewhere because the population now is extremely rude and snobby

I left Utica close to 30 years ago. It's decline is heartbreaking. I miss it for what it was, and hate it for what it's become.
It's improved a lot in the past 4 years

@BuffaloHarry719 leave NY while you can
Born in Chicago & raised in both places !!! Will always hold Utica close to my heart ♥️, loved living here back in the 1980’s !!!
That is so cool! I grew up in Rome in the 90s but was in Utica all the time. I have only been to Chicago once though. Cheers
Great job. Since you're in the area, please cover the Mohawk Valley (Ilion, Frankfort, Herkimer, etc.)

Fantastic video my man. May I ask which software you used?
Of course: Google sheets for researching/writing, Midjourney for AI images, Blender for 3d maps, and Final Cut Pro for editing. Thanks for watching!
This is very well done. We know Utica because both our daughters, Southern girls, married Utica boys. Thank you.
Thank you!
Great hockey town!!!
Man i forgot about Utica Club.. is that brew still brewing?
Yes
Yes and besides all the Saranac products they actually brew beer for many other national brands and some microbrews.
Utica is so beautiful ❤
Thank you... very insightful... formerly from Canajoharie back in the 60's - I still see a lot of potential ahead for this city.
Their steamed hams are great 😂
New York is a beautiful state. I've seen a lot but there's a ton more. Thank you for the video!
It really is! Thanks
Clinton, NY had a railed trolley that ran from Utica.
Also a light rail from Utica to Clayton, NY where all the downstate folks went for the resorts.
Do New Hartford and other surrounding towns
Norwich would be great too.
Whitesboro>New Hartford. Eff the Spartans go warriors !!!!
Well done ! 8:22
Love it! Have lots of family and history from there.
Believe it or not, upstate NY is very friendly, nothing like NYC.
Very true but I have found lots of kindness downstate as well, you just have to dig a little for it. Thanks for watching!
NYC have nice people better than GA..the entire state has free spirit people I'm from Rochester NY
You can't generalize ANY city! Good and bad people everywhere.

Same - I moved away a decade ago and live downstate now
Any chance you would be doing something on my hometown of Amsterdam?
I think I will! Thanks for the idea
Classic upstate city born on the banks of the canal.
Too bad they destroyed themselves with that downtown hospital boondoggle! 😂
Very true. Right over an historical tow path too.....

It needs a swift change of direction, that's for sure.
The state taxation caused most of the industry to flee Utica in the 60's and 70's. If that doesn't change,Utica will probably not rise again.
