Nice repot! I love hinokis, the reason I haven't got one in the last few years is all the specimens locally here have their graft bulge too big and obvious, you were very lucky with yours!
Thank you Dave! Ah that's annoying! You might be able to get one online like I did. They don't even do the grafted ones over here! 😅 I love them as a species tho.
I live in Germany and my local Gardencenter had some hinokis ( each about 30 cm in height and grown very vigorously. They sold each for 10€. That was a really happy day for me. (it‘s a very traditional flower/gardening store and held by the same family for more than 50 years)
Great little cypress Adam, best of luck with the cuttings..i hope they root for you, i can see a nice little cypress forrest in the future if all goes well.
Nigel did something happen to your channel? I’ve been off a while and noticed I was no longer subscribed to you??? We used to comment to each other often, hope all is well buddy
Really impressive that you retained a lot of foliage despite all that clean up. another super nice video. I hope those roots treat you well this season.
Great video! I appreciate the extra info about the variety. I’m just about to repot mine. It is also from nursery stock and I’ve had it on the bench for almost a year. I would like to see more about pruning hinoki. I love their foliage pads, but b/c they are so dense, I’m not sure how to develop them for ramification.
Another GREAT video Adam. I have several of these that look almost exactly like your final product here. Again, informative, high quality video and very easy to understand...you could almost make a "HOW TO" series with your videos. Great job!!!
Hey Wally!! Thanks! 😊 Aw nice one! How many Hinokis do you have?? They're so nice to work on. I may arrange the videos in a playlist when there is more! 😊
Thanks adam. Hinoki cypress is a favorit for me here in Norway. Hardy trees . Left them out on the bench all winter. I drops down to 20 minus where I live. They doing amazing
Loved your style on this tree! Great content man! Looking forward to watching your channel all day 😎 pretty new to bonsai but learning quick!! I will be turning a hinoki bonsai soon☺️
Nice video, nice little tips and tricks for my own Hinoki. BTW there is enough oxygen in the water, so plants will not drown. Do not worry if you need to have any plant/tree in water a couple of days.
Hey thank you Howard 🙂I just searched for "Bonsai drainage mesh" and thats what I got. I believe it came in a plastic wrap with Kanji on it. It came with 5 sheets.
I would have tried a tourniquet to improve the roots on this tree. Just tie a wire around the root just below where you want the roots to come out, eventually it will choke the the root and the tree will have to make roots above the tourniquet. THe benifit of this is that its slower and the tree will not be in as much of a danger of dying.
Really enjoying watching your content. Looking to start making bonsai.. what was the other alternative tree to use as you stated in your video please. 👍
With a nursery hinoki purchased in summer would it be best to repot right away to get roots growing in bonsai mix or leave in poor compost till spring?
Hi Dave! It is generally recommended to wait until the following spring for repotting. The reason behind this is to avoid adding additional stress to the tree during its active growing season. In the meantime, it's important to ensure that the tree remains healthy and well-maintained. Keep it in a suitable location with proper sunlight, watering, and care. 🌱🙂
I’ve either not heard, or it didn’t sink in, about the sacrificial branch to thicken up a trunk. Thanks for the tip/reminder! My teacher once mentioned not to mess with the roots if you’re working on the top and vice versa because it’s too much for the plant. Did you do it all for the video or is that what you find works?
I'm glad you found the tip about sacrificial branches helpful! Regarding your teacher's advice about not working on both roots and the top of the tree simultaneously, it's indeed a common practice in bonsai. Making major changes to both the roots and the top foliage at the same time can put a lot of stress on the tree, potentially compromising its health and vigour. Personally I have found that is is generally ok to work on both if the tree is young, I would not do this with older Hinoki and if you want to be on the super safe side only work on one at a time. I hope this clarifies things for you! If you have any more questions or need further explanations, feel free to ask. Happy bonsai growing! 🌳🌿
I got a hinoki cypress yesterday at the nursery! And because it’s still spring I’m going to give it a prune, wire shaping and a potting. One side of my hinoki is not as colored as the front. I think it’s due to lack of sunlight. I think when it’s all pruned it should get sun. I have a question, at what temperature is too hot or too cold for my bonsai’s?
I'd advise waiting a year after repotting a hinoki before you style it or work on the foliage. The temperature depends on the species. Hinoki cypress is adaptable to a range of temperatures and can tolerate both cold and hot conditions. In general, Hinoki cypress trees thrive in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C (50°F to 86°F). However, they can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F) in winter and as high as 35°C (95°F) in summer, provided that they receive adequate water and care. It is important to note that different cultivars and growing conditions can also affect the temperature preferences of Hinoki cypress trees. In general, they prefer well-drained soil, partial shade, and protection from strong winds.
@@notionbonsai I did see youre hinoki cypress video, and you said they want a high drain soil but moist with spaghnum moss. Which I put in the soil. My species is thoweil hinoki cypress
The best time to propagate cuttings from Hinoki is during late spring to early summer. This period allows the cuttings to establish roots while the plant is actively growing🌱😊
Was there signs of new growth on the tree to prompt you to repot it? I’ve been taught to not repot until a tree shows positive signs of new growth, like green tips, etc,
I think it was beginning to! Thanks for that advice though! 🤗 I didn't take too much off the roots or foliage so hopefully it grows strong in that pot this year!
Maybe you should have more patience 😅 pruning, root pruning, Bare rooting and putting it in a small pot expect it to recover. I should have waited strip it down to its flare to see how the nebari is. Leave it in this container cause the roots and soil were looking Just fine. Setting the first 2 branches with wire. Choosing the front and brainstorm where i want to go with the design. When the tree shows some good growth i'll give some extra sweets to push some more and than i'll prune. To repot it in (a larger training pot) late summer early autumn. But hey this is bonsai its your tree and i love hinoki 2 but i killed a lot trees in the beginning with your speedy method😂🎉

Great video Adam. Hinoki make for super cute little trees. Be careful that their dense growth habit can cause the inner foliage to brown and die off.

Hey Dylan, thanks very much! Hinokis grow so slowly so it will take a long time to get good ramification on them!
I'm wondering if those cuttings ever rooted???
They are justtt producing some roots now! Maybe 1/2 cm roots on them. Gotta leave them longer to establish before working on them!
I am as well.
