What is your favorite movie in the franchise??
At World's End , it's just epic
This one! Love the aesthetic of Davy Jones 😁...and Calypso with her weird but helpful self 😅
4th! On Stranger Tides! Peak Sparrow for me!
I lovve Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest but I still can't wait for you guys to react to the third one At World's End which is my #1 favorite of them and you should watch the other ones too.
At World’s End is the best imo, though Dead Man’s Chest does come pretty close.
You probably already know the fun fact about the line Jack sings as he carries the dirt. "I've got a jar of dirt, and guess what's inside it." That whole scene is all improvised by Johnny. The reactions of the cast are genuine because the director just let Johnny do his thing.
And that's why it's one of the most iconic scenes in the movie (:
I’ve got a jar of dirt is currently my mum’s notification alert 😂
The fall was also an accident so everyone going “ooo” was real!
@@BookishGecko 🤣
During the trial, Depp referes to a jar of dirt when Heard testifies about having a jar of cocaine.
One of the things that I find extremely astonishing when I come back to these movies is how good the CGI is for the time. The lighting, etc on Davy Jones is crazy good
The detail on his face too!!! It's wild!!
@@whitenoisereacts Did you guys know the designers of him used a styrofoam coffee cup as the model for the texture of his skin?! sooooo cool. Also they had to animate each of his tentacles separately, I imagine it was incredibly tedious but it really really paid off. He is one of the greatest film villains to ever be created, i can't wait for you guys to see him again in the next one!!!
"For the time" 😂
As someone who is older and remembers CGI from the beginning it's always funny to me how young people act like some of this later CGI was the stone ages. It had already been around for a good while by this point
@@Trenchcoat3 true, but if I compare it with movies from now, IMO it looked more real. I just watched Sandman for example which was a good series but the CGI looked sooo fake. And I could give you more examples. POTC is over 15 years old and it looks better than a lot of movies from now a days..
@@Szimicards That's because they were able to work at the CGI and plan things out, it wasn't just "Make the movie 'better' with CGI before we ship it in two months" like a fair few have done recently.
Fun Fact: Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman are actually two completely unrelated legends of the sea. Davy Jones, as you yourself pointed out, is the mythical sea devil who collects the souls of those who die at sea and stores them in his Locker. The Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that was cursed to sail the seas forever, never making port. However, in real nautical folklore Davy Jones is not the captain of the Flying Dutchman. The Captain of the Flying Dutchman, according to legend, is Hendrick Van Der Decken. Disney took some creative liberties and combined the two legends for the sake of the story.
Hahaha i learned this from "one piece" but i am glad you told the boys ☺😁
@@Cantmakeupmymindonaname I had no idea that in Folklore Jones isn't the Captain, so when i saw the Flying Dutchman in the Fishman Island arc, i was so confused as to why Davy Jones wasn't there but Van Der Decken was. Good to have thta cleared up now
I believe Davy Jones was the captain of the Dutchman in SpongeBob too right? I feel like that must have been before this film.
@@MrMadshepherd No, in SpongeBob, the Flying Dutchman is the name of the ghost captain, not the ship, and he's said in several episodes that he's an acquaintance of Davy Jones, indicating that they are separate beings.
Also, the Kraken is from Norse mythology whereas the origins of Davy Jones are unclear and
POSSIBLE SPOILER
Calypso is a figure in greek myth.
You probably didn't notice it , it took me at least 5 rewatches . In the scene where they visit Tia Dalma for the first time she lets out the monkey and he runs into the next room and sits on a pair of boots and looking at the person wearing them also chittering at that person , we also see a close up of that later when Tia walks into the room to get the jar of dirt and to top it all of we see Jack holding Barbossa's hat in a very short scene so they teased the hell out of his return but no one notices these things because they happen so fast .
Also hell yeah Barbossa is back, the next movie cemented him as my favorite character.
Oh that’s super cool!!!
It's also worth noting that the cast was not informed of his return so their look of shock right before his reveal is genuine
I was just commenting this on Patreon! Lol A blink and you'll miss it moment....but so cool!
@@Trinithium i heard they were told that the person coming down would be Anne Marie from the 1st movie but then it was Geoffrey Rush. Orlando's reaction is the best 😳
@@sophiecooper1824 I read that they knew. The actor who plays Pintel said that it kind of became an urban legend but they actually knew.
"100 souls." Jack was branded a pirate after freeing 100 slaves.
yup, his deal with Jones was to bring back the pearl after he freed the slaves and the Pearl was sunk, sadly this info comes from a deleted scene that really should've been kept in
Common Jack sparrow W
One of the few good pirates lol. Most pirates had slaves
I wonder if those slaves were the mourners we see at the end with the candles? If that's where they and Jack washed ashore after the first sinking of the Pearl it explains how he knows Tia Dalma, who likely then told him about Davy's resurrection powers and gave him the compass.
They were, that's why there was so many of them & sad@@ShadowQuickpaw
8:19 Bill Turner wasn't able to die because he was cursed by the Aztec gold before they dropped him to the buttom of the ocean. Imagine being stuck in the dark depths of the ocean without being able to escape or die.. stuff of nightmares. I think anyone would have taken any chance they got to get out of that fate..
you know if he was really that desperate, seeing as they were immortal, he could have just pulled an Aron Ralston and cut off his own leg when the moonlight shined on him (assuming it was at the depth where the light could still reach him) of course he'd just end up like Barbossa in the later films
@@SmoovyNovaFancut off his leg how ? His hands and while body was tied. Treated rope takes months if not years to rot
So my favorite thing about that ending was that their faces were genuine because they didn't know who was gonna walk down the steps. They knew someone was but they weren't told who. So when the actor for Barbosa came down the steps they were all actually shocked. I just love that so much.
Btw guys, the Caribbean Sea is actually notorious for having several reefs that sit not far below the water line and lots of small islets that can only be seen at low tide. It is actually easy to run up on one if you don't have good charts or a good lookout. During filming of the first movie, the crew was going to sail to a location at night to be ready for early filming. All the locals advised them not to do it; sailors native to the Caribbean rarely sail at night because you can't see the reefs and the little islands that are just below the water line, and unless your boat has a very shallow draft (meaning that when loaded with supplies and crew, it does not sit far below the waterline) you can end up in trouble. The crew assured everyone that with GPS, they would be fine. Sure enough, they hit a reef, punctured the boat, and started taking on water. Johnny had his yacht on location, so he sailed out to pick them up.
Dang that crazy
Captain Jack saves the day again
Your pic beside fit the tematic, is FIRE 😁
45:00 Some people do think Elizabeth loves Jack... I think it's more that she's enamored with him because he is everything she wants to be. From the very beginning, Elizabeth has craved adventure and has been obsessed with pirates - because she wants to be one. She wants freedom, wants to explore, and these are things a woman can't have, especially a noble one. Jack represents that life she wants - especially in the first movie before she sees more of his flaws.
Yeah, I like that honestly better
That's how I always saw it.
I vote yes on that.
I would even say her desire is not about him at all only about the live he leads.
I think you guys are really going to be blown away by the cinematography of the next movie. It's really incredible to behold.
Dude...it was sorta insane!!!
I can't stress enough how much I adore the Liar's Dice scene - because from the moment they sit down, the winner has already been decided.
There's a rule that's really important to understanding this scene: you can only challenge the previous bid on your own turn, meaning as well that you can only challenge the player directly before you in the turn order. By sitting where he did, Bill quite literally puts himself between Will and Jones. And Jones is genuinely shocked at the end - because he's only ever been hurt by love, he never even imagined that Bill would put his son before himself.
Fun fact: If Will’s dad did not met Davy Jones. He would had died drowning in the ocean. The curse from the first movie was lifted when he was on the Dutchman. So that would essentially mean that Will would have accidentally killed his father…
I think I remember reading a bit of the script where Will had dialogue acknowledging that. Saying that when he broke the curse, he was making his peace with the idea that he was somewhere setting his father free, but also killing him and losing that faint hope of ever finding him again
Bill Nighy who plays Davy Jones said he wanted to do Scottish accent for the film as it stood apart from others. He also does face twitches and expressions while straining on certain parts of his speech to make his facial expressions more pronounced since the tentacles are entirely CGI and he didn't want it to cover up his expressions.
Oh! and He was also the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter 6 and 7.
im not sure if anyone has said but it seems Jack's odd walk is not from too much rum but its actually because of his "sea legs" notice that he only seems to do odd walk on land but when he on the ship he walks fine - he as been at see so long his body had adapted to the rock and rolling of the ocean and his body cant seem to deal with the stillness of dry land so he's sense of balance is thrown off
That’s true!!! I love that
I once heard someone compare it to walking after a bunch of time on a treadmill.
That Jack Sparrow runnung style on the beach was another genius improvisation by Johnny Depp made the scene so much funnier.
Davy Jones theme without a shadow of a doubt best theme ever. If I could one day learn to play the organ I will play it.
Omigosh, I agree. I learned to play it on the 'tiny gay guitar' of the instrument world (ukulele) and it *still* gave me chills 😅👌
A couple years ago, a man cosplayed as Jack Sparrow was at our county fair. When my daughter and her friend saw him they immediately came home, grabbed a glass jar, filled it with dirt, and brought it back to Jack.
Iconic!!!
My home city has a yearly 'Pirate Weekend' (the South West UK has a long and infamous association with pirates and smugglers - it's where the stereotypical 'pirate accent' comes from).
There's tall ships moored up and re-enactors dressed as pirates and soldiers wandering around the 17th/18th century Barbican harbour including one person cosplaying Cap'n Jack. He's so good people have mistaken him for Johnny himself and amazingly I've never seen him break character for the entire weekend.
To answer why the specific amount of souls for Jack's is 100, it's because there's a deleted scene in the third film where we learned Jack was told to get a shipment of cargo (which ended up being 100 slaves) from one place to another and he refused. As punishment for his treachery, Jack and the ship he was on (which ended up being the Black Pearl) was destroyed and sunken into the seas. This is where Jack would meet Davy Jones and make the deal with him revealed in this film.
Film lore fact. Cutler Beckett was the one who branded Jack after Jack refused to transport slaves and released the ones that were on a ship. That's how he got named a pirate. In one of the movies ( not sure which one) Jack says to Beckett " People ain't cargo mate". Looking forward to seeing you react to World's End.
The back story between Jack and Beckett (sorry if I spelt it wrong) also is about the Black Pearl. It ended up being a deleted scene. If I remember correctly, the Black Pearl was once the Wicked Wench. Jack was involved with the East India Trading Co. and Jack was supposed to deliver people (possibly slave cargo) but Jack said people aren't cargo. So he burned the Wench to its now Black color and he and the ship sank. Jack then cut a deal with Jones to save him and the ship with the cost of the souls he was meant to deliver. Beckett also branded Jack as a pirate for failing him. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (Theres also a book series of Jack Sparrow as a kid)
This is correct, but I also hesitate to consider this scene when summing up Jack's character. There's an argument to be made that Jack doing this contradicts his character arc; that being a journey from selfishness to selflessness. There's also an argument to be made that this selfless decision that results in his death and branding as a pirate leads him to becoming more selfish. However, what tips the scales for me is that the scene was ultimately cut for a reason. While most scenes are cut for time purposes, this scene was stated to be cut specifically because of how it would affect Jack's arc.
Also, the scene you're talking about is from the third movie. Not this one.
@@leakypeach6250 thank you for correcting me!
@@leakypeach6250 I’m partial to the idea that Jack at one point was a decent man in his youth- but the tragedy of his ship burning and being branded a pirate all these years made him a functioning alcoholic, and made him selfish. I like it because that’s usually what happens to people, overtime they begin to be less good and more jaded if they continue to have bad things happen to them even when they try to do good. Feels realistic to me and is a reason he eventually has an arc, because he was, in his heart a good man
Damn. Like not wanting to deliver slaves, that's good. But then trading their souls, isn't that arguably far worse 😐
Why stop the delivery just to turn around and do that?
Now I'm curious for more context.
Captain Sparrow may come across as a selfish, drunken bastard but deep down he’s an excellent strategist and a good man. Only those closest to him know his antics and see he’s only doing the things he does for a reason.
There's a deleted scene where Will played two games against Davey Jones, the first game was for Bootstrap's freedom which Will ending up winning, the second game was for the key, which is the game where Bootstrap stepped in and wagered his soul for eternity. He had his freedom for less than five minutes.
we know this isnt Jack's first experience with the natives, if you remember in the first movie he was telling the 2 guards the story about how he became a chief of natives, it was just as Elisabeth fell into the water and then he jumped in to save her :)
Yes I totally noticed that!!!
Also weird he says to those guards after cutting Elizabeth’s corset off “clearly you’ve never been to Singapore” and Pirates 3 opening is set there. At Jack’s hanging at the end of the first move one of his crimes is “impersonating a cleric of the Church of England” or something and Pirates 4 opening is set with that. Plus the chief of natives I think they’re all connected
Davy Jones's accent is actually Scottish. The director originally wanted him to be Dutch since he's captain of the Dutch-man but Bill Nighy said, "I don't do Dutch." So, he chose to do Scottish.
Man, that last scene never fails. Each time I watch this movie, when they reveal Barbosa and he asks "what's become of my ship?", man, I always get chills.
Apparently the cast had no idea who was coming down those stairs at the end so that the genuine reaction of them seeing Barbossa.
Pretty sure the first movie was always planned as a single movie unless it was a success. After the first being so successful, the second and third movies were greeenlit and filmed back to back which explains the all the cliffhangers
I dont know if anyone commented it yet, but at the end, when Barbossa comes down the stairs....they managed to keep it a secret from the cast. The look on orlando Blooms face is priceless and you can tell that not acting, he really was surprised.
Fun Fact: The whole "I got a Jar of Dirt~ I got a Jar of Dirt~" scene was not scripted. Johnny Depp acted on his own and the surprised faces of the other actors where genuine. You could even see Orlando Bloom/Will look at the camera crew for a moment XD
Johnny Depp is just perfect when it comes to spontaneous acting ^^
"I got a jar of dirt, I got a jar of dirt, and guess what's inside it"
-Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.
The Davy Jones and his crews effects hold up very well for being about 2 decades old
You mentioned the stuntmen during the fight on the wheel, but if I remember correctly, at least part of that scene was done by the actual actors harnessed on to the wheel! I feel like I remember a behind the scenes shot of Orlando Bloom immediately post-scene saying that he "wouldn't recommend that."
I remember being so thrilled watching this in theaters back in the day. I remember yelling out "he finally got his apple" when Barbosa came down the steps 😭😂
The moment Mr. Gibbs realized never to have Rum around Will or Elizabeth 56:35
The only thing I know about the effect off the top of my head is that the Kraken breaking the ship in half was practical. They had an actual, full sized ship and they dropped two cement beams on it to mimic the Kraken's tentacles slamming down. And, I believe Davy Jone's face was all CG. If you have the ability to watch the writer's audio commentary for this, you should they talk a lot about how things were done.
That’s SO COOL!!!!
Love the reaction, personally this is my favourite of the series. The reason Will's father didn't die, was because he had the same curse as the rest of Barbossa's crew. So he either had to stay on the bottom of the ocean for who knows how long or join Davy Jones' crew.
Make sure to watch the after credits scene for the 3rd movie. It is a really good one. Don't remember if the second one has an after credits scene. But in the first movie, the monkey steals one of the cursed gold coins in the after credits scene, which is why he's a zombie in this movie. *just finished the reaction, guess the 2nd has post credit haha
I really love how Jack and Elizabeth play off of each other in this movie! Both of them are tempting eachother with a struggle between doing what is honorable or what serves their interests. Both take a page from the other's book in the end, and that's such great writing👍
I hate that some people don't understand that Lizzie obviously didn't want to kill Jack. But she knew that the only way to save everyone else was by doing that. Some people are confused that she seemed remorseful in the end, but really? She wants to save Jack of course, she just did what she had to do! I think it's pretty obvious.
Because Keira Knightley is confusing with her facial expressions
Scary fact: 11:00 the man talks about taisty "long pig" which is another way of saying human, he flat out told Will it was an island of cannibals
Fun fact: The actor who plays Beckett is the same guy who played Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice 2005.
Elizabeth and collins meet again! I knew there was a reason I hated him!
This took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
A well-deserved win.
I love Norrington in this film, cause it brings a cool aspect of his character and in the words of Jack himself: "Still rooting for you, mate!"
He's also...CUTE!!! Come on, you know that is why he is so likeable
@@whitenoisereacts Yeah, you got me there! And he's super likable
I can't tell you how much my sisters and I SWOON over this man in this movie
If you want you can go through all 5 or stop at 3. I personally like the three, the last 2 were kind of meh, you can tell Johnny was not really into it. Of course he was going through a very troubled time in his personal life. (She who must not be named). Knowing now what he was going through at the time from the trial, I'm a bit more sympathetic to watching it.
And here's a little more pirate lore, so the reason why Beckett is after Jack is alot more personal, Beckett paid Jack to carry a cargo to West India trading company, only to find out it was slaves. And Jack freed them instead, telling Beckett "people aren't cargo mate." Beckett then branded him with P for pirate. Beckett then burned Jacks ship , turning it charcoal black, Jack then made the deal with Davy Jones to get his ship back from the depths of the ocean, Davy Jones gave him 13 years to be ship of the Captain of ship, obviously that deal is a bit skewed because the mutiny Barbosa did. They went to that swampy place with the witch, it's speculated those were the freed slaves.
4 and 5 still have great moments
I liked 4 tbh, felt like a spin off but I rly think ppl are giving it too much shit. I rly liked the (Spoiler) Mermaid part and also Blackbeard as the villian. I also think it was a more "based" movie. Def not a bad film.
@@SovermanandVioboy I very much agree
@@SovermanandVioboy Yep, it's a solid, fun standalone film, that simply suffers from the brilliance of the OG trilogy.
3d and 5th Kinda sucks
The music in these films is phenomenal and yes that organ is 🔥🔥
It's even better on the soundtrack.
I'd say go ahead and do all 5 and form your own opinion. #3 is my personal favorite, but #2 is a very close second. Davy Jones is so good
Agree , they should watch all 5
3 is also my favorite! But I enjoy all 5 and I did in fact re-watch DMTNT quite a lot.
"How do we introduce Jack in the sequel?"
...
"Count of Monte Cristo?"
"Count of Monte Cristo"
Seeing you guys after a looong day is such a treat!! Always the best reactions!
Awww thanks!!
Bill Nighy did an astonishing work on Davy Jones, from the facial expressions to the voice and accent (its scottish accent btw since he was a great scottish sailor)
Dead Man’s Chest was actually the first Pirates film I watched! I became really invested in the series after my cinematic experience of the second film. Davy Jones is one of the creepiest villains I’ve seen and the Kraken sequences left me on the edge of my seat!
I think Bootstrap Bill's actions in the liar's dice scene is more impactful when you realize that Will had just won his father's freedom before proposing a rematch with the stakes in the scene, unfortunately that part was cut.
If you're interested in the effects, I can tell you that the kraken splitting the ship in half with the two tentacles was practical!
They had a dummy ship (no masts) and dropped two massive great concrete piilars on it!!!
To be clear, Bootstrap was only originally compelled to 100 years of service. That is the same offer made to all people, Jack included. By losing in Will's place, he now serves for the entire time that Davy Jones is captain, not just for 100 years, so he did in fact occur a servitude greater than he originally had, it wasn't meaningless.
The visual effects and motion capture ARE fantastic, especially for a movie filmed almost 20 years ago! Fantastic!
Had this on DVD growing up. The making of extras are just as good as the movie.
Davy Jones has a Scottish accent. He’s a great villain!
The actor also plays Viktor in the Underworld series and Scrimgeour in the Harry Potter series. He is an amazing actor. You should definitely check out Underworld if you haven’t seen them
Just a reminder that Jacks Compass points to whatever the holder wants most in the world at the moment, this can both be anything or anyone (I’m a little unsure of how specific it works, like if it is once “hearts deepest wish/desire” or something like that but even if that’s the case the basic rules still apply. This is why it never points to north and it’s also why Mr Gibbs said to Will in the first movie “it’s true that the compass doesn’t point to north but we aren’t trying to find north”. So if the one holding it doesn’t know what he or she wants or they do know what they want but perhaps feel uncertainty over it (I don’t know how to explain it, Tia Dalmatia said it better) then it can’t pinpoint a heading. Sorry for grammar issues btw.
No need to worry about the monkey Jack in the end credits on the first movie he went back and got a piece of the Aztec gold so he's still Undead.
if it's a ship, it's either a full-size ship they built (though afaik for the most part they'd essentially just build the outside of a ship and there would be no mid or lower decks-- those would be separate sets) or a miniature.
When the kraken's tentacles fall and crush the ship, what they did was fill steel pipes with concrete, paint them blue, lift them with cranes, and drop them. The blue was chromakeyed out and replaced with CGI tentacles, but the destruction was very real.
In the third movie, there are a couple very clever composited shots. I highly recommend watching behind the scenes vids on all the practical effects and sets used in this series!
I went on a chemistry trip for school to the island of Dominica where they filmed scenes for this movie. We stayed at a restored Fort Shirley kept by the most amazing and kind man named Lennox Honychurch. He was the most wonderful host for us as we stayed for the week at the fort and was a featured extra in the Jar of Dirt scene! You can see him in the background for a second, love that guy and hope he’s doing well!
“Why wasn’t he able to die?” At the time, he was still under the curse from taking the Aztec gold.
It's amusing when you realize how the same British actors are in American movies. This time it's Lizzie and Mr Collins from Pride and Prejudice.
Yeah it is’nn
Not sure if anyone has mentioned but on the dvd behind the scenes footage i think an effects artist mentioned they used a coffee stained Styrofoam cup as inspiration for the texture of davy jones face.
Billy Nighy is great. Loved him in Underworld too.
His brief role in Harry Potter, too lol.
But I remember when I was younger I wasn't really into keeping track of actors in movies. My brother in law was 12 years older than me and really into actors and stuff and was excitedly telling me about how Bill Nighy was going to be Davy Jones and, me being hard of hearing and unfamiliar with actors was thinking "Bill Nye, the Science Guy?"
"What kind of leviathan?"
Kraken.
Level 30 Gargantuan Monstrosity.
500 HP, lightning immunity, weather control, real nasty stuff.
I remember watching this at the movie theater, and with that ending, everybody screamed. We all got really exited for the next movie haha
Love this movie, I hope you guys do all 5 movies. The first three may be the best of the bunch, but the last two are still great movies worth the watch.
I still get can't enough of the way Jack runs haha 😂
*James watching Johnny Depp step on sand*
James: “Dude that was so cool”😂😯
But it was!!!
8:18 Cuz Bootstrap was still affected by the curse in the first movie, so essentially undead and stuck trapped at the bottom of the ocean
Those cages at the start are called "Crow cages"
Crows would mostly eat people after they died though.
They'd go for the eyes and tongues first, because they were the easiest to get at.
Would suggest to finish watching it to the last one even if the number 4 is meh.. But the last one got one specific storyline that's so hard hitting that it's worth the watch even just for that storyline alone, for the fan of the franchise.
Hmm, I believe I stopped watching after 4. may have to remedy that.
I agree with this wholeheartedly. That last storyline for the 5th movie is what makes the movie for me. The original 3 movies will always be the best. But between the 4th and the 5th. The 5th movie is, in my opinion, better. I loved the plot twist at the end an honestly even though the 4th movie had it's moments, the concept of mermaids and all, I still could have done without it. But I did enjoy the ending to the 5th movie. An unneeded but nice bow to the franchise.
@@MarijnvdSterre Dead Men Tell No Tales is better and a great ending. I rewatched it a ton even though it's not my favorite
Одно из самых печальных зрелищ -- гибель "Черной жемчужины" и капитана Джека Воробья -- One of the saddest sights is the death of the Black Pearl and Captain Jack Sparrow.
The combination of practical effects and CGI in this movie is masterful. These were the days when really expensive movies actually looked really expensive. Marvel movies cost more nowadays and don’t look half as good. These movies are very underrated.
It's because these days they pay a grand amount of that money to the A-listing actors and the executives/directors/producers. Basically, people on top just hoard the money.
@@lightefilit Totally. And they also underpay the CGI artists and don’t give them the time they need.
those things the bodies were hanging in at the beginning are called gibbets, and they were very real! criminals would be propped up in them in very public areas around town and left out to decay. sometimes people were killed before being placed in them, others were put in there alive and would die from exposure or starvation, being pecked by birds and scavenged by animals along the way. they were really popular attractions, people would gather just to watch, and a lot of streets are still named after the corpses who were in those gibbets.
FYI guys, there's a series, Black Sails re: pirates that is excellent; I'm sure your plate is full though.
Hands down my favorite of all the pirate movies, watching this truly made my day! 😄
GREAT film, well written, directed masterfully, performances, casting, locations you name it brilliant cinema.
The second one is still my favourite. All three are a blast. I don't really count the ones after that personally
Jack is so used to walking on a ship, he looks drunk whenever off a ship. While on a ship, he walks normal.
Somehow, Bill Nighy has found himself as the no-nonsense nemesis of the noble rogue Johnny Depp in a period setting twice over. Best villain of the series by far, and you've only seen half of his story. I'll always remember seeing this one in theatres. The comedy pirate duo are Pintel (the one with the beard) and Ragetti (wooden eye).
Guys, every one of the Pirates movies has an end credits scene. If you go back and watch the scene at the end of #1, you will see how Jack the Monkey survives. The one at the end of this film is not as important; Verbinski sort of threw it in so people would not hate him for for the jail dog's fate. The one at the end of #3 is MAJORLY important, though I'm afraid film #5 tossed the entire point of that scene out the window for the sake of their so-called "plot", but I won't rant about that now because it's a big spoiler.
Honestly, after Pirates #3, you can stop. Pirates 4 was written to be a standalone film instead of connecting to the previous trilogy or setting up a new one, and even though it had the same writing team, the loss of Gore Verbinski shows. I like Rob Marshall, I really do, but I'm not sure he was the right choice for this movie. Additionally, leadership at Disney changed at this time, and that made things difficult for Johnny as he lot the *one* guy in the top brass who never had a problem with Johnny's portrayal of Jack in the original films (everyone else thought he was making Jack too "weird"). Coupled with what we now he was going through in his personal life, it's no wonder Johnny's performance in #5 did not have the same zest of life to it that the first films did. Idk...that's just a personal opinion, and I'll still watch your reactions to the others if you go all the way to the end; maybe you can give me a new perspective. And the effects in #5 particularly may be of interest to you.
But for myself--and I know this seems ridiculous to say when we've been dealing with a crew of cursed skeletons and the boogeyman of the sea--but as the series went on, it seemed to get less and less "real" for me. Before, there was always a big element of reality in the story, with most people not believing in and even being shocked by the fantastical elements like the skeletal crew and Davy Jones. But in the 4th films we get zombies, voodoo, mermaids, the Fountain of Youth, shrunken ships, and a mystical sword that controls boat rigging -*-all in the same story-*- and they even take a legendary REAL pirate -- the only thing in the film with a foot in the real world -- into something out of a fantasy novel. It just...for me personally, it just never grabbed me.
We watched it!
This is a bit random but I love that Davy's tentacles almost look like a big beard, you can imagine him human
his compass points to what he wants most.
In case you're wondering, Jack the Monkey is still undead because it turned back to the cave in Isla de Muerta and stole a medallion in the end credit scene of the first movie.
Davy Jones....a deadly captain of The Flying Dutchman, with a deadly ghostly crew, and an EVEN DEADLIER pet(The Kraken).
On the ride it goes through a Bayou before descending into pirate world...very cool😎😎😎😎
Many ships WERE equipped with front-mounted guns, though typically they were smaller than the usual cannon, fired and loaded by a single crewman, and called a 'bow chaser.'
So, that "Liar's dice" scene makes a lot less sense in the final cut that y'all saw. The reason being that the final cut only uses about half the scene. There's actually a whole explanation for the game along with a starting round against Davy Jones where Will bets 100 years of servitude against his father's freedom. In this game, he actually wins. Then, Will gets greedy and makes a play at the key. That's why his father intervenes and intentionally loses to save Will.
Edit: there's actually a great UA-cam video out there that goes into detail about everything that was cut from that scene.
I'd actually much rather recommend Lord Ravenscrofts video breaking down the logic and emotions behind the scene we actually see.
If anything: aside from the lack of a clear explanation of how the game actually functions: I think the scene as is is far more effective. (Even if it does have to cut Will's best line lol)
“Some pirate booty” naaaah my mind is too far gone 😭😭
“Why wasn’t he able to die?” Because until will lifted the curse, bill was still cursed. The only reason they needed will is because they would never be able to retrieve bill but they needed the blood of everyone who took from the chest which is why in the final act of the first movie Jack also cuts his hand
“If anyone knows how they did any of the effects in these movies let us know” In the first one because they didn’t know if it would take off most of the boat scenes are CG or sets with green screen. For the second and third movies full scale actual functioning black Pearl and Flying Dutchman ships were constructed. In the third one for the destruction of the endeavour they combined green screen, CG and practical effects to create its destruction. Green screen for the people, CG for the sides of the ship but the top of it and the rest of the bulk was actually blown up with explosives
FYI, the pronunciation you are discussing is the difference between UK English & US English. Ca - RIB - ean is the US, pronunciation with emphasis on the RIB, whereas Ca - rib - EAN is how we say it in The UK, with the stress on the end EAN. Since all of the main characters are English they pronounce it the UK English way.
I gotta say it again: I absolutely love this movie soooooo much!!
I've actually only just realised but the compass not knowing where to point (jack not knowing what he wants) makes so much more sense in at worlds end with being the captain and thoughts regarding the flying dutchman.
I believe it was intentional that they showed Elizabeth being disgusted that she found Jack attractive. But again, she was interested in the pirate's way of life since she was a child. Perhaps she always wanted to marry a pirate. Good thing Will is a pirate as well.
Idk how old this movie is, but goddamn the CGI on Davy Jones looks amazing 🤩
I reaaaly never felt the atraction that they hint at between Elizabeth and Jack in this movie, like at all. And I am a big fan of the character of Jack Sparrow!
Also if you meant what you said at 48:20 there are some comics books where Jack's adventures continue and these two are recurring characters
And you definitely know Bill Nighy (Davey Jones) from a lot. He played the minister of magic in Harry Potter 6 and 7.
And he's Scottish I believe. He's doing all the facial expressions with motion capture
I love the post credit scene where the dog becomes their king haha
That ending with captain barbossa had me so hyped!
Hey Guys. Great reaction. I hope you continue with the rest of the franchise. They're all really good :)
We will!!
This one is definitely the best of the series.
