In the ‘80’s at Courts of Honor, we wore the OA sash folded on the belt and the merit badge sash normally and we looked DARN good!

The OA dangle is the insignia that identifies you as a member of the OA, not the lodge flap. The lodge flap signifies that you are an active, dues-paying member of your council lodge. If you went through your ordeal (making you an arrowman) but aren’t a paid-up registered member of a lodge, but want to show you are an arrowman, wear only the dangle. It is acceptable to wear just the dangle, just the flap, or both (preferred IMO), because you can be an arrowman but not a registered, paid-up member of a lodge, but not vis-versa. I wear both because I am active and like looking decorated. Even when I wear the sash I keep it on there is no reason why it can't be a mainstay on the uniform, just because it isn't always visible. I do recommend going through Brotherhood in the OA eventually.

I always thought the OA was a stuck up exclusive club. I don’t know how your troop did it, but it was just a popularity contest. 12 years a scout, Eagle Scout, trekked everywhere….no OA lodge invite. Why the hell is there an exclusive guild closed off to scout members for inscrutable reasons? Just one of the many problems I have with the scouts looking back on it 20 years later.
Will not let my kid join this organization.

@@Edog1337 Everyone has different experiences based on their Troop and how their OA Lodge runs things. The Lodge or Chapters should be contacting the unit leaders to conduct an election within each troop in the Lodge every year. Did your Troop have people from the Lodge or Chapter come to hold an election? Sometimes Scout leaders decline an election because of something that happened in the past. It could have been 2 years ago or 50 years ago that a leader had a bad experience. When the election is run properly it is not just a popularity contest. I am sorry you had a bad experience in Scouting, it is such an amazing program that teaches values, morals, leadership, and so much more.

@@Edog1337 Its not a "Guild" It is a program to add onto BSA that shows cheerful service. They help out at summer camps they do really fun things. And yes, the induction weekend can not be talked of. That's because so members can experience it themselves and new pathways in scouting.

back in the day...1960s-70s...we never put random patches on the back of our merit badge sash...looks tacky !! As for the OA Dangle. we only wore it on OA functions..too may were lost on regular camping trips and Troop meetings...

    • @VineArm

there's a unspoken rule in my Troop that you can't put random patches on the back of your merit badge sash, because like you said it looks tacky.

If you like the patches on the back of the sash, do it!

@@CreachterZ I never did put patches on the back.... They might look more orderly if they were more orderly.... Idk though.... Her sash her choice... Everyone here has a valid opinion... Keeping the uniform orderly keeps it from looking like a "sticker book". Seems to project baked cline to the scout law? Kinda "unclean looking" and a bit "irreverent"... Definitely "brave" in a way. Id feel like the ppl behind me were wondering.... Like I was attention seeking...
When you run out of room on the front.... is traditionally what the back is for, for rank and file boy scouts... As an adult it makes more sense as "advertising" for the events.... Myself I very rarely wear my sash... (Or anyone else's)

If your Troop allows, why not. Who cares. My son has all his awards on the back of his stash. He worked hard to earn those awards.

I hope so too!! This program has so much to offer and the youth who see that will get everything and more out of it. Happy Scouting to you and your daughters! :D If any questions ever arise, please reach out and I would love to help.

The national outdoor award is worn centered on the right pocket, not above the right pocket that's where your NOAC/Jamboree patch goes. also the different segments for the national outdoor award are: Riding, Hiking, Camping, Aquatics, Adventure, Conservation, and devices are awarded by doing extra activities in each of the awards criteria. There's also the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement which can be earned by doing Special criteria relating to the national outdoor award patches. For metals if you do not have a knot, medals are pinned on the seam of the left pocket. If you do have a knot than they are pinned above the knot on the left side of the uniform.

You need to reverse the imaging on your camera.
I believe you have it on mirror imaging.

Where do you find this information? Do they have an updated uniform book?

    • @GwendolynsScoutingAdventure

Hi, yes they have a "Guide to Awards and Insignia" book available for online purchase or at a Scout Shop (I recommend calling ahead). Or there are quick links to certain sections of the book on the BSA website.

Great information. A youth could also wear the James E West award for a knot. Very rare for a young scout to have that kind of disposable money. ;-)
Keep up the great work, and good luck and good skill with getting to Eagle Scout.

We wore our OA sashes over the shoulder and merit badge sash on the belt against regulation for Eagle Scout Court of Honor lol. I didn't think you could put anything on the back of the merit badge sash.

Somehow, the video image was reversed in production. Note, the 'Boy Scouts of America" is spelled BACKWARDS. And the sash is worn on the right shoulder, not the left. Otherwise, good information.

Thanks for being careful about uniform. Pins don't go on your collar, or anywhere else on your uniform.

maybe instead of being an absolute idiot and making a comment intended to insult or demean someone you should fix your fragile masculinity and go dig a hole and lay in it and mind your business
