    Thank you for calling out the "cinematic" marketing buzzword nonsense. 😄 The slow-zoom-in swan butt had me rolling.

    It's ISO 200 for tungsten, ISO 250 for daylight, if I remember correctly. Insanely god for pushing. Looks more or less the same up tp 1600. Much lower grain than Delta or T-Max 3200 at 1600.

      I can confirm that! With a good push developer, you can like perceptol, you can have literally 0 grain

    Double X is without a doubt a very distinctive film. I have shot it as 16mm motion picture film in various projects and I totally warn everyone that it does not have much highlight latitude….in exteriors I would not expose over 1 stop. It’s a beautiful film stock but you have to know what you are doing with it. Cinelab London have always processed my work. I am in the best hands haha

      I learned this the hard way. It’s definitely part of what gives it its specific look. I’ll definitely keep it in mind the next time I get rolls of it

    Before you did the "dramatic cinematic treatment" to the images, I was thinking, "Since this is a 'cinematic' film, I think it would be fun to shoot it in a Horizon panoramic camera... Seeing your super crops makes me want to do that even more now. :)

    Big fan of Double-X especially in D96, my personal way of preserving the highlights is shooting at 200 and developing for 6 minutes in D96 (stock).

    OK, now you HAVE to make a movie to go along with that trailer you made. A woman, some geese, loading a truck... downtown. it's all there now put it together!!! We want a movie!

    I've recently discovered your channel after getting into analog photography for the first time. I've been binge watching your videos since, especially the roll reviews. Great stuff as always 😁

    A very nice film. I don't shoot it much but it's nice to use once in a while.

    I am so grateful for this on-going education about film. It led me to rediscover my Canon A-1 (bought 40 years ago) and other cameras. Also as a bonus it led me to Favours.

    Great video, one of my favorite films. I’ve been shooting it a lot recently. I typically shoot Tri-X at box speed and push +1 for crunchy, inky black. But with Double-X I find exposing for 200 or 250 gives me the same look and saves me a little extra money from the lab since I no longer need the push. It’s slower than Tri-X at 400, sure, but it still has a very distinct look that really suits my style. 😍

      Also love Tri-X easy to push and lots of contrast with that classic grain.

    Think I'm going to get some of this and try it in two bath dev - like the Leitz formula. That should hold back the highlights. That might be the perfect combination.

    Just last week, I put a 100 foot roll of Kodak 5222 into a new-to-me bulk loader. I shot one roll of the Cinestill version, and loved it -- but I'd rather pay a little less. I wish I had a good way to break down 400 foot camera rolls -- either a bulk loader with a 6 1/2" film chamber, wide enough for the camera roll spool, or a rewinder. I've got the files to 3D print a rewinder -- maybe I need to get my printer running again.
    When i shot it, I processed in Cinestill Df96 (didn't have my darkroom up, so single bottle storage was a big plus), pushed to 400, and I was amazed.
    The thing to remember with Kodak's recommended D-96 -- a low-contrast developer -- is that the recommendation is for *motion picture negatives,* which will (originally) be printed to positive film for projection. This requires a relatively low contrast negative. Kodak's ISO rating in D-96 is officially 200, but if you develop to modern still photography contrast level, you get the 250 that Cinestill and many others give. In my experience, it takes very little to get to EI 400 and still (at least with my metering technique) get very good shadows, and less tendency to blow the highlights.
    I consider Double-X more like an alternate world Tri-X -- not quite as much real speed, similar grain (since Tri-X was reformulated in the early 2000s), slightly higher native contrast. That's why I got a bulk roll, and wish I had the equipment to get an even bigger one.

    If you want a lower contrast Double-X Neg., process in D-76 or ID-11 Stock, instead of D-96.

    • @eatfrog
      @eatfrog 2 роки тому +2

      D96 is a lower contrast developer compared to D76 so it's the other way around.

    Interesting, I just got back some Cinestill XX the other week and was super disappointed with how over exposed it was as well as all the black levels being crushed - like insanely high contrast. I was convinced the lab stuffed up the scanning or something, because with my own eye looking through the negative I can see more detail than the scans I received. Had to do some intense lightroom editing to get back any details, but still not super happy with it. Still not sure if its the lab, me or the film itself.

    • @Jorge_Ambruster
      @Jorge_Ambruster 2 роки тому +1

      If you see it in the negative is probably the lab's fault

    Anyone have any preferred color filters for use with DoubleX? It's a panchromatic film, but still could benefit from the typical red/orange/yellow filters at least for daylight shots. Would like to know if there is a "sweet spot" filter. *OR* I could get off my behind and shoot a few rolls with the various filters and see what I get!!! 🙂
