I'm never expecting great photos from film reviews because usually they aren't very good, but yours are outstandingly good, which adds on top of very valuable info for still photographers shooting this film, thanks a lot!
This is genuinely the best video I've ever seen showing the results of an interesting film used with interesting developers. I congratulate you on your artistic as well as your technical skills, sir. I am impressed.
One of the reasons I started using my Nikon f3 is because of your channel. Your patience, your visual creativity and teaching is a breath of fresh air on UA-cam
I ordered a roll of Double-X. Can't wait to begin shooting it. On the other hand it is very sad to know that these two nations are now in a devastating situation and killing one another. You took really great pictures, I really appreciated it.
Dear Steven, Thank you for your beautiful stories. There’s so much life in your photos! You have also made a wonderful and smart design of your video, which is really unique on UA-cam. Thank you for letting the World know you! Best wishes!
Love your videos. Beautiful pictures, relaxing music, very instructive and inspirational. I currently use Rodinal 1:50 with HP5+ and have "embraced the grain"......but certainly interesting to see some very good alternatives. Thank-you!!!
Exceptional work, Steven! I took so many notes. Thank you! Those photos were breathtaking. Your delivery, as always, is genuine, helpful, and never condescending. I haven't had enough information to feel like I could push Double XX, but I bought some recently and have loved the results at 200/250. I'll try my next roll at 1600 after watching this.
I only shoot digital, I try to emulate Double X so perhaps that’s why the algorithm recommended you but I’m glad it did as this video left me spellbound. Amazing work my friend.
I like Double-X in D96 1+3, with 4 inversions at 3 min intervals. I think this development method increases the sharpness, and lifts shadows without blowing out the highlights. It works particularly well at ISO 600+. It also makes an already low-cost developer even more economical.
That shot at 4:54 with the reflection was some amazing timing on your part. Nice shots all around. Your information should be in book form. There is a lot in the video. Best wishes! God bless!
Hi Steven, I really liked your black&white pictures. I take mostly color photos because I never managed to make the right profile, to make them come out just like yours. I photograph digitally ( on film long time ago ) and I tried to make profiles on nikon and fuji X100V.I used recipe Ilford Pan F 50 plus and I try still modify. It is similar as Double X but not yet perfect. Your photos Double X are PERFECT.
incredible work my friend! just received my first ever rolls of Kodak Vision 500T and now I am going to look into this film stock as well! Thank you for this
Beautiful Jerusalem photos! I went this year in August, and I also found it a fascinating place. A question: would you have been able to take the same photos with a Nikon F3?
Steve your work is beautiful! I've been watching your channel for ages and even began using d23 thanks to you. Thanks for sharing your wonderful self with us.
I really love the format of these videos, having some time to show the photographs and then some brief commentary about them is a great format. I recently ordered a range from 50D to 500T which I am working through at the moment. if you have other forms of social media I would follow them, maybe you should consider putting them in the description on your videos :) Thanks for the video Steven, I have no doubt you deserve a bigger audience for videos like these.
Steven ; hello , I have not purchased the rest of equipment to roll my own film , I saw this film in Bay , I will look again. Still learning my lovely 50mm F2 DR , and I have also procured 3 weeks ago the Rollei Wide 55mm F4. Right now experimenting with that unit to make certain the lens is as should be. My Wide Rollei is an F , but has features that top end E bodies had. Learning that right now too. Hoe you see this message. Chris . Now I enjoy learning more here , from you.
Incredibly sharp & well composed photos in Israel. Have myself wondered about such a photo trip but backed away because of the local tension. Very interesting photos taken in orthodox neighborhoods. ❤❤😊
Wonderful video sir. Iam a filmaker and writer and I have been watching ur videos and I really like ur approach and most importantly ur framing. Ur framing sense is very attractive to my taste. 😊 Can you tell me your preferred lighting condition and mood that you like to shoot 5222 and at what speed ? Thanks 😊
Hi Steven! Love your work! Always love watching your video and appreciate the effort you put into your photos. You are an exceptional dedicated photographer! Thank you!
I first followed you on flickr not knowing you have such a great UA-cam channel. I love your work, you are amazing... thanks for the great video... I always shoot my doubleX at 250 and develop in d76 (1+1) gives me great results, I tried ddx (1+9) and it was really amazing but too expensive for everyday use... just wondering what are the black lines on the top and bottom of your Israel negative at 9:19 ? are they "light piping" effect ?
Glad you like them. The black lines just developing wheel causes marks outside the film frame. Next time I want to mixing D-76, D-76D D-96 from raw chemical.
Right at the end of the video you show Fomapan 100 with the Sumicron 35mm 8 element lens developed in Rodinal. This is a combination I really would like to try because I own that lens. Do you mind to share what dilution of Rodinal (1:50?) you use and the development time?
Your videos are great! If you ever plan on making a video about mixing D-96 like you did with D-23 I would love that. I also think your photos are great!
Very interesting and reveals your talents as a very good photographer. Tri-X has always been my go to bnw film, but I have not shot the Kodak double film stock you shot. More motion film stocks in 35mm are now reappearing in the UK at the moment, which increases the choices for the film photographer.
Incredible pictures ! You’re talented. Have been shooting tri-x for years but the price is ridiculous these days, I’ll give double X a try. Subscribed!
I like your imagery but wonder why it is so unsharp. Is it the film? Or the lens? Or the focusing? I've shot a lot of film over the years and have consistently gotten much sharper imagery, so I wonder what is going on here.
I wonder if I can mimic this film with Foma 100 if developed correctly. Foma has a tendency to blow highlights, so that is not going to be the same, but if exposed and developed correctly, I guess I could get close. I guess I have to experiment with this, Foma looks vintage and is less than half the price after all in Europe. :) I loved the Double-X grainy shadows which were not clipped as that can happen with my usual film of choice (HP5+) during wintertime. It'd be nice to have some latitude there.
Hi, Steven, great and informative video, will definitely give Double-X a go. Your photography work is excellent. I've recently dove deep into film photography with my NikonF3AF, and even started developing my own black and white film. I'm using X-Tol and currently loving the results. Great video, thanks for sharing. You should give XTOL a try with double x. You might not like the contrast but it is my favorite developer for most B&W film.

Nice! I’m running on two Nikons and have the same problem with software. However I found that a process where you use VueScan to make dng files and then convert them in Lightroom with NLP works very well for color negatives. Indeed VueScans color adjusting is painful!
Is that Minolta version 1? I heard good things about that scanner as oppose to version 2 that suffers from awful banding… that might however differ from unit to unit.
Thanks John. I have tried FUJI Microfine to develop some ILFORD Pan400 but haven't try 5222, very very fine grain that Pan400 looks like a iso100 film. I will try it to develop Fomapan 100 then to see how it be. I also tried FUJI SPD which is an another fast developer with lower cost, I think may to be an alternative to the HC-110, it's powerful.
