    I love your videos so much. You converted me to Leica a few years ago so I bought an M10. I had Sony and Fuji before and the color balance out of the camera was so much better on my M10. I say was because then I discovered film (I was a kid when the world converted to digital) and the colors again were so much better out of the camera than any digital camera, including my M10. For a while I kept my M10 and ran lots of experiments alongside my M3 and sure I could almost get the tones to look right but then I would also have to adjust contrast and dynamic range so it wouldn’t look so flat, or so artificial.. for every photo that I cared about. Eventually I realized that if what I wanted was the color and texture of film photography, I should just shoot film. I sold my M10 and M3 and bought and M6 and I now I spend my creative time behind a subject rather than behind a computer screen. Ironically, I’m a software engineer on weekdays so maybe that’s why I don’t want to spend more time in front of a computer. Anyway, thanks so much for all the content you put together and all the secrets you share with us. You are a gem in this sea of suffocating affiliate marketing and clinical camera reviews.

      I agree with and fully understand your remarks… I’ve been there! Wasted £1000s going back and forth from film (which I grew up with, especially. Kodachrome, Ektachrome and Velvia ) and different digital cameras/makes.
      Had settled on film but the cost and convenience got me to scratch the CCD itch Thorsten started years ago with his reviews on the DMR and traded everything for a M8 and TL2 (for travel). Zero regrets. I love the M8, handling, looks and image quality.

      @@richardramsay1795 To be fair, I have only had it for a couple of months and it was a low shutter count mint copy. So far no issues but though I am worried about it failing (as, where will I find another?) I am going to keep using it. I do treat all my cameras with kid gloves so hopefully no issues. If the worst comes maybe a M9 (with replaced sensor or send a lower cost one to the specialist in the US who fixes then) though many joint owners seem to prefer the M8. Maybe another R9 but with the DMR next?!

    I paused at the chart comparing the four Leica digital bodies at 1:24:20, and it is facinating! I own an M10-R, and may favorite thing about it is that when RAW files are processed using the latest Adobe Lightroom Classic at all the default settings Adobe choses for this body, the colors look exactly like Kodak Portra, having that beautiful, slightly less saturated and slightly more pastel look that Portra 400 does, especially if you lean towards a correct to slight over exposure (exposing for the shadows). This shows up exactly in your chart! Amusingly, I owned a really old Phase One digital back for a Hasselblad 503CW, and the CCD sensor in it also had exactly the over saturated colors, extreamly deep dark blue, and greenish cast to the Sky Blue, that your M9 exibits in this chart. (Leica's own Lightroom color profile for the M10-R actually looks more saturated, much like the M11 in the chart, than the "Adobe Color" profile that Lightroom selects as its default for the 10-R). Very interesting video!

    I’ve done similar comparisons with colors, between brands and Leica camera sensors, and blind test picking of images. And I’ve concluded for me the original sensor in the Leica SL (601) produces the most pleasing images of any digital camera regardless of brand, and shooting M lenses on that camera produces some of the best most pleasing digital images you’ll ever achieve to date. Great video, you’re really drilling down to how the light is gathered, filtered, and how the processor sees it, interpreters the colors and displays them, and no one does it better then Leica.

    Fantastic explanation. I'm going to do what you suggested - when I shoot my events in 'strange' light, I'm going to take a photo of the 18 percent card in the ambient light, and then put the colour picker on it in Capture 1, then set that colour for all the images (when I'm at home post-processing). Just one question Thorsten - if you are using a bit of fill flash during the shoot, do we still take the ambient reading on grey cared without flash, or do we have to shoot the 18% card with a burst of fill-flash to get the reading accurate?

    Thanks for the interesting video. I took a few test photos with the M11 and I immediately noticed the described red/magenta shift. The M8 that I still own and a Lumix camera before it did that too. I never liked that and it kept me from buying the camera. In the video you talk about the resulting color tone -8 having to be set. Are you doing this with a post processing setup? That would be a workaround for the problem. The colors got better in the test shots when I changed the color setting in Lightroom to automatic and not from the picture,

    Well that was a slow burn before we got to the topic but I did like the walk back in time with the retro gear. There is nothing better than holding retro gear that has a build quality you can only dream of buying now, they are timeless pieces to be valued. Each camera, lens, film and sensor have a different feel and your point is so true that in film days it was just accepted there would be nuances to your images depending on what you used in differing settings and that was that. The digital age has made us so much more demanding. I do like the white card suggestion and will buy one to take with me.

    Thanks for putting this video together - I bought an M11 recently and was very excited to see what you had to say about its colors. When editing the photos, I tend to feel that the M11 profile in Lightroom is excessively saturated, so after experimenting a bit, I usually switch back to Adobe Standard, and then perhaps push up Vibrance or even Saturation a little bit. However, what puzzles me more is that, when I get images loaded into Lightroom, it quite consistently loads the Magenta tint way too heavily - often to anywhere from +13 to +19, and I always have to take the Magenta down manually, quite significantly. Is that an issue you have experienced? - Or would it indicate there is something I am doing wrong?

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  2 роки тому +2

      Magenta too heavily. Do you mean the Tint is like +15 but should be -8. That is what I mostly find, that the tint has to be adjusted minus 10-15 points to be right. A bit disturbing. Same in Capture One, so it's the file, not the software of profile.
      (Color temperature = Kelvin is adjustment of blue, Tint is adjustment Green/Magenta)

    • @srenpap-tolstrup7678
      @srenpap-tolstrup7678 2 роки тому +1

      @@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Yes. Although, what I see is less drastic than the numbers you indicate - perhaps because I have converted to Adobe Standard first? I find that Magenta tint is usually set to around +19 when I start editing - I tend to get good and natural-looking results by taking it down to anywhere between +9 and +13. Those numbers are still odd; but I find the image to look correct at those level - becomes way too green if I go to zero or below. Wonder if this is material for a future firmware update, if - as you indicate - it is the file itself...? I suppose that in that case it is a pretty universal issue everyone has...

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  2 роки тому

      @@srenpap-tolstrup7678 My AWB and Kelvin 5400 start out +14 generally. If you use a WhiBal greycard in the photo, it will adjust to somewhere between +4 and -8 (you can also use the picker anywhere in the photo where the RGB shows almost the same levels as that would neutral).
      There was someone who made his own new profiles, and I don't agree completely with them. But could help analyze the data: www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1737771/35#15963618
      But in using Lightroom Classic, I would go with Adobe Standard as profile.
      One cannot make a Style with "reduce Ting with 10" or something, but that would solve it for the most part. Don't know if Leica could actually update firmware to adjust colors. I doubt they would mess with it now as it also ties in with what Capture One and Adobe now settled for.
      I wish they would find the guys from Imacon who used to work with scanner software and the DMR digital back for the R9. Those guys can do colors! Not sure they have people at Leica who can (judging from the JPG b&W of the M11 I am nervous they have very little in-house expertise on color management from sensors)

    Great video, Thorsten! Your joy at hitting paydirt with the battery and strap is infectious. So, have you stopped using Adobe Standard for M11 files (with a nudge down on the orange and blue saturation)? Are you now using X-rite profiles instead? I shot the X-rite card with a 50 Lux in daylight and ran the profile and it barely changed the out-of-camera colors. The problem with using one's eye in these matters is that you develop visual biases quickly, and adapt to the colors the same way your eye adjusts to different white balances. I'm wondering if I'm killing the lifeof the images by using Adobe Standard. Thoughts? PS: the M11 colors may not be perfect but they're WAY better than the M240 was. Keep up the great work and answer my questions if you can please?

    Great video Thorsten and everything well explained like we used to get from you.
    However I have something to add, and maybe discus, about white balance.
    When I want a true representation of somebody or something, a grey card is the way to go, no doubt.
    However, and with a sample I can illustrated this the best.
    Suppose you are dining in a restaurant or maybe sitting in the sun and the ambient light (lamp or sun) throws a nice yellowish shine on the thing/person you want to photograph.
    Adjusting the photo with a grey card will ruin that cast/shine cause the cast will be on the card too and after adjustment it all be neutralised and the cast/shine is gone.
    That's why I, in daily shooting, don't use it any more.

      Setting Kelvin to 3200 indoor or 5400 outdoor can be the standard way to have it based on something you can recognize and know what to do about. The WhiBal cleans it up yes, and then you can dirty it up with adjusting the Kelvin scale to warmer. I find I do that quite a lot. Add warmth.

    Great colloquium on color. Enjoyable, though I remain confused, just less so. I take it that white balance calibration is sufficient to capture the modulation of color throughout a typical day; and while the deltas or changes may be captured, there is no “absolute” accuracy that may be achieved as the gamut of color is wider than our limited perception and subjective judgment concerning color. But one question: Do Leica really attempt to achieve accuracy, or are they guided by a particular “aesthetic” view on color. As megapixel density rises has this aesthetic become less decisive and certain?

    Thanks a lot. Your whole video was awesome. I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson said that he saw photography - photos - as "instant paintings." If you look at a photograph as a painting, a work of art - not a document or recording of facts, the "realism" of the colors in a photograph don't mean so much - not to me. Photographs are like people, you either like them or you don't.

      Thanks, in the video you talk about using your M lenses on the R bodies……so you need M-to R! Have you tried that, Dan says its possible. I never found such adapters existing myself, so any tips would be highly appreciated.

      @@zenonkontolemis1232 Search for the Leica 14167 adapter. Be sure to check discussion threads before buying. The M flange distance is much shorter than the R, therefore with most M lenses you will only be able to focus on very close subjects. The adapter was meant for special Visoflex lenses, and I have no experience with it.

    Hi Thorsten! Miss talking to you man. There are some other things I have been researching about color. I LOVE you come from a graphic design background (I do too). But also we have to think of the different color theory based on different cultures. For instance, I have a color theory book from Japan. I didn't realize it right away but they have MUCH more color variants than in the US and Europe. Got me thinking about color as it works in say Africa or Latin American and Indigenous people. Then, when the M10P came out and the color variant was different (with the same sensor) than the M10, it hit me that you can actually develop a color based on who the market is: specifically, the skin tones. So, I have an experiment I will tell you privately that I will be doing to work with a real color variant. It may look like crap, who knows... but I have to try this chromatic variant not based on what a camera manufacture has given us but what we can do as an artist.

      Also, ran into an interesting kelvin issue in LA with another photographer who's assistant didn't set the camera for the color cast with a portrait that was very specific - way too yellow! Sou out of the box the S (a studio camera I suppose) is likely default set to Tungsten. Took a lot of work to get the photos right, but you either see it or you do not. Another chat for another time.

    The problem with old camera tech down the road is the procurement of batteries. Good lesson to all

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  2 роки тому +1

      When the batteries are this special, yes. The more popular models, third parties make them and sell them long time after. Not always as stable batteries, but at least available. For models like this, or the Hasselblad for example, buy enough batteries while supplies last 🙂

    I'm a happy user of the M10. I considered M11, but don't see any benefits for my use case. I use the M10 with the APO 50. For the color accuracy I created Adobe color profiles with X Rite Colorchecker Passport - it does make a difference. But you know what looks best - JPG straight out of camera. So I shoot in DNG + JPG mode and in most cases I choose JPG, because it looks better.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

      I don't disagree that JPG straight out of camera can work very well. It's easy, it's straight-forward, and it forceds you to do it as right as possible.

    Although not commercially advantageous, I thought Leica for SL cameras ,should have adopted a model similar to Rollei 3003 with a separate back devoted to the sensor and electronics . The Leica bodies are so well made that can last for many years ( as they did for the film cameras ) but in the digital age that is not practical as new sensors become available. As much as people like the Leica brand , it is always difficult to justify spending 5-6 thousand dollars every few years. For the sensors and the electronics it is always an input from companies in the far east and Leica can take a share on the profits from the sale of a new back with a new sensor .

    Thorsten, this is pure Leica porn and is the generation of such lust a healthy thing? The collectors who are driven by such stuff will have their fix, but for most of us who shoot analog Leica, will focus on our photography and not the cameras and lenses we have in our cabinets. Why keep a racehorse if you never race it?

      These are good points, but it does my heart good that this guy is sharing his collection and experience with us. How rare. I love collectors. Sure this kind of camera lust can ruin the average man, but does that mean extraordinary men should not exist, or should hide? What a stupid waste that would be. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Thorsten for sharing your incredible passion. Certainly anyone can gain inspiration from your philosophy on photography, and life.
