I was freezing because I wanted Christian to get a clip, but he couldn't turn the camera on and I was dying. Then he finally gets it recording for a few seconds and I was waving my hands to get him to shut it off. 😆

I would never dare drive in that. I can’t drive a car anyway. The most daring thing I ever did in snow was take my power chair out to to my friends who have been caught out in manual wheelchairs back into our apartment block. I found that scary enough.

My favorite part of driving in the states with a block heater is when people think something is wrong with my car when they see the cord hanging out of the front.

Y’all are so brave driving in that weather. In North Carolina, if we even think snow is coming, there is a run on the grocery store for bread and milk and we cancel everything before the first snowflake hits.

You're from Gravelbourg!?!! My family is scattered all through that area, from Killdeer to Assiniboia, Mankota and Rockglen! Amazing! I remember mom would load us up to head to visit everyone as soon as school let out. Driving on those roads with cold and blowing snow is no joke! Unfortunately we have to drug our cattos just to take them to the vet. I don't think the one could handle a road trip, she starts hyperventilating as soon as she's in the car.
Thank you for taking us along on your road trip! I'm hoping we can make it Sask and the Wood Mountain Rodeo this summer.

As someone who grew up with blockheaters being a thing, I never questioned that people plugged their cars in. I moved south and met my best friend, who had never heard of such a thing. It was my first time realising not everyone had them. Mind you, I haven't had one in any car I've had because it doesn't get cold enough to need one in the Toronto region.
Gotta say you had some cold weather there though. We had a green Christmas again this year, although probaby 20 minutes down the road from us had a white Christmas. 😡 Our temps went from cold due to the storm that swept across the US (we only got to -16C/-3F, wind chill -26C/-15F), but yesterday (Dec 30/22) it was 13C/55F, and I watched someone walk down the street in a t-shirt and pair of shorts. Not exactly cold here right now. The weather is so crazy. Hope you're keeping warm!

1. This confirms that I am not suited for cold weather, despite growing up in New England. 2. I absolutely adore your cribbage board. I haven’t played in so long but I always played with my Grandma and Papa when I was young. Great way to work on math skills for kiddos!

I do not know how you do it? Going out with wet hair, no jacket in freezing cold weather. I don't care how close to the store entrance you were. It's too cold for me! Christmas Eve I came home from my niece's and there was NO HEAT! 8 degrees outside & no heat inside. Fortunately, I found a plumber/heating company that was able to come out Christmas morning. I saw your nails and had to laugh, bec I have the same nail polish - just got it this morning! No, I hadn't seen your vlog yet. I was out before you uploaded the video. So glad you had a nice Christmas with your families. Unfortunately, my husband wasn't home, but unlike when we lived in Florida, I have family around & was able to spend the time with them. So nice. thats insanely cold up there! Glad you got there safely and returned home safely. Bummer that your car needed to be jumped twice. Never heard of block heater for cars, we have a prius, which can start up fine in -50sC O__o...o__O. I only experience -20C with the windchill here in IL. Doubt I survive those temps -47C. But yea the temps went up to 60F afterwards; currently sitting around the 40sF. Our snow melted fast! Your videos are entertaining and enjoyable. I'm going to start the new year, using your sketchbook since I finally graduated from uni two weeks ago. Yes, the further I got into it, the more comfortable I was. I think that's why the final 2 turned out the best.
We are now basking in almost 60°F in ohio after our experience with the -25 windmills from that storm... 🤓

Yikes, I would NOT want to have to squat in those conditions! I've frozen my tush to do it before. Can relate. In "good" (very snowy) winters in cabin territory we're usually out on the snowmobiles all day at least once per cabin trip, so you expose the tush at some point or suffer trying to hold it over bumps all the way back.
I live up in the Northwest Territories and that whiteout driving in the dark is my hour drive to work and the hour back. Anytime anyone passes by on the other side of the road you can’t see anything at all for a few seconds and it’s terrifying. 0/10 I know how you feel
I feel the no block heater pain. I also live in Alberta and drive a car that came from BC. When it was super cold I had to go start my car like every two hours when I went to work.

💕You’re awesome! But seriously you guys have to consider doing an un-christmas or something. That was astoundingly dangerous. 😳 There were so few cars on those roads, it’s not a common commute for xmas, you can’t see, there’s no civilization, and it’s death degrees out. Using that car was far out, you wouldn’t last long if it broke down, srsly that was perilous. I’m thrilled it all worked out, but wow, one thing goes wrong and death could ensue. Please think about alternate ways to celebrate/travel for the future. Best to you guys! 💕 PS: Also you might want to empty your water pipes in your home in case you lose power when you’re not there- so your pipes can’t freeze and burst in a worst case scenario.
They live somewhere that storms like that are relatively common. She had said if she knew the road conditions were that bad she wouldn’t have left. Perhaps instead of not going they should consider upgrading their car and emergency preparedness in case their car does break down as well as better methods of checking the roads in the future.
@@HumdrumCurio I’m in Canada. If that was my daughter, I’d make new plans. Currently our family meets at a halfway point when the roads are clear, weather permitting in November to possibly early December. We bring a Christmas tree right in to the hotel. If it’s too snowy, we wait. Christmas is not a day, it’s time put aside for family. Safety is paramount. Videochat suffices until it’s safe to travel. It doesn’t matter what car you buy, at -47c in high wind in areas with questionable cell service, it’s not worth it when you can just set up a safe time to travel. Best to you.

When she said she got out of the car in that weather I think I added an extra blanket 🥶🥶🥶 checking the weather before you go, ensuring you have a vehicle that will make the journey, a planned route and people who know when to expect you, are all paramount for a safe road trip 🙂 hopefully they are able to plan differently next year similar to what your family does or something else that works for them and keeps everyone safe and warm 😁

Not in Vancouver. It usually hovered around 0°C there, with -10° being considered a cold snap.

Like your car I too don't function in cold weather. Thankfully Maine cold while its own beast compared to my home state isn't as bad as where you live in Canada. Actually besides the cold where I'm at it's mild here considering we haven't had any snow stick around.
I have no idea how you can drive on such icy roads. As someone with major anxiety when driving I'd probably end up with a panic attack on roads like that.

I just had a dead battery, right before the cold snap happened but I just needed a new battery. Sometimes battery issues will trigger anti theft issues so your car thinks you're stealing it so all the systems quit working. I always accidently lock my husband outside. It's muscle memory, shut the door, lock it.

My car has 2 block heaters 😆 we were getting one installed and when my hubby's friend finished he was like.... wait a minute there are 2 cords. So I guess I have a backup now, not a bad idea since it's very easy to forget and just drive off when you are plugged in if you don't approach car from the front.
Also my sister has remote start, doesn't help when temps are near -40° anyways. When most people would want to have remote start. Lol

Definitely get a block heater if you can! My mom's car originally came from ontario and also didn't have one but putting one is was relatively okay around $250.
My brain can't even grasp the concept of it being that cold. When I lived in the UK it got to -10C one day and I thought I'd freeze. I live in Western Australia, this week we will be around 38C each day. The driving scared me.
12:30 that exact thing happened to me, turns out the tube in the top of the driver side door that redirects water (or melting snow) had unaligned itself so the moisture was getting on something that caused my car to freak out, exactly what you described. so just check all the hoses and weather strips!

A block heater would help but adding in a battery warmer you can plug in would also be a huge help too! That way your battery won't freeze C: Ours got partially frozen in our brand new car last year but after getting that it had no problems
