This was her second music video she directed (the first was The Man) ; no other actors, no makeup or wardrobe people (covid lockdowns). She did her own hair and makeup, and wore something under her own nightgown for when she got wet. I like the wooden furniture in the room; they are likely actual antiques (she loves antiques and their stories). She painted the picture of her Rhode Island house on the wall; and the bearded man is her paternal grandfather (A US Marine in WWII). Easter Eggs for other songs on the record - Great American Dynasty and Epiphany.
Second she directed completely on her own! She does have a couple of co-director credits, too, and Joseph Kahn has said she should have had credit on most of his videos, too.
@@khills istr those earlier videos were co - produced, not co - directed. (She started her Taylor Swift Productions in 1989 era.) She started the storyboarding very early on -- Speak Now era ? , I think. But she was shopping around for treatments for the music from different directors at least through Red.
She's always been super involved, though. It is one of her key strengths, the enthusiasm over everything she does.
I am in mourning over Reputation being gone from Netflix, and 1989 Tour from Apple Music. I prefer the original edits to the re - masters.
It is my belief that the broken “B” is for Betty. This song is part of a trilogy that tells the story of a teenage love triangle. James and Betty were a couple and he ended up cheating thus breaking Betty’s heart hence the broken “B”.
And this is specifically Betty's POV song.

I know this song is part of the love triangle but for me the video very much symbolizes what living through the pandemic felt like. At first she’s at home isolated, then she’s out in nature appreciating it’s beauty but still very much isolated and then as the video progresses the isolation becomes overwhelming and she starts to feel like she’s drowning but throughout it all her music is there to support her. It’s very much how she described this album as a flotation device to help occupy her mind during the initial lockdown period when the whole world was up in the air.
This song is part of a teenage love triangle that Taylor dreamt up. Cardigan is a song from Betty’s point of view. She has been cheated on by her love interest James, but she’s hoping as she says that “you’ll come back to me”. The song August is from the “other woman’s” point of view. She’s hoping that James loves her, but comes to understand that he does not. The song Betty is from James’ point of view. He wants to get back with Betty and the song is about him screwing up and what he’s thinking. Very creative!
I think this is more of a fanfic, am I wrong?

@@mowgli7_ Yep, you’re wrong. (I say that smiling!) She’s talked about the love triangle she created many times, including her Long Pond discussions, and even during her current Eras tour! She’s said in her mind the “other women” shouldn’t be vilified because really, she just wants to be loved as most people do. She also imagines James and Betty staying together despite the fact that he really puts them through it.

The B key it's probably because cardigan is one of the trilogy of songs: cardigan, august and betty, it's about a teenage love triangle, each song from each perspective, and cardigan is from Betty's perspective. In the cabin, the clock is ofc on 13 and there is a picture os Taylor's grandfather who was an inspiration for track 13 called epiphany. We do not have bt out yet, BUT she is screening some of them before the Eras tour, you could probably find clips of it, but don't worry, from what I've seen she is in a pool haha. I recommend reacting to willow right after this willow kinda starts right where cardigan left off, at least visually, don't know about the actual story, like some of it kinda fits into the lyrics of cardigan, but I like to think that it's a different story.
Willow and Cardigan music videos are definitely different stories and not connected in anyway. I think it was Taylor's way of showing visually that Evermore and Folklore are connected to each other and are sister albums. Cardigan and Willow are the only singles from each album too so this makes sense.
@@Becksnnc yeah yeah yeah, music video-wise yeah, connected I mean in lyrics. cause even though the lyrics are not similar at first sight, the first verse and the chorus is giving me huge James Betty vibes if we're hoing with Taylor's ending. like "your ship rolled in that night" the party, "rough on a surface but you cut through like a knife" like maybe Betty was a little resilient to forgive him but he "cut through like a knife" he just convinced her. "and if it was an open shut case, I never would've known from the look on your face, lost in a current like a priceless wine" from what James was telling Betty, it was not open shut case, but even if it was (as I think it was) she wouldn't have known, because she was "lost in his current". and the chorus again "the more that you say, the less I know" he was talking talking talking and she started to stop caring cause she still loved hi. and "wreck my plans" that goes right back to Augustine who would do the came thing "cancel plans just in case you'd call"....idk....maybe it's too much, the rest of the song is it's own for sure.
Taylor Swift has some of the best music videos on the whole industry and I love your reactions and the way you explain how the shots are made. Keep up the great work!

I wonder if the B is for Betty. That's the character she portrays in this song. There are three songs on Folklore that are each from the point of view of a person in the live triangle and this is Betty's point of view. The other songs are Betty (James point of view) and August (the other girl's point of view which I believe Taylor said her name is actually August [swifties please confirm, cause I can't remember if she said it was August or Augustine in the Long Pond studio sessions])

You need to remember this was filmed during peak Covid lockdown (May/June 2020)… there was no crew! Nothing was open. It was just her and videographer! She said she couldn’t ask people to fly, etc., and risk their lives. Those are her clothes; she did her own hair & makeup. The cabin is real. It belongs to a friend of hers.
I’ve always seen this as Neverland because she references Peter losing Wendy. Then she decides to leave him and find herself in the water trying to not get overwhelmed and drown from the loss and trying to get back to herself. Idk if it’s really true but it’s how I see it.
This song is from Folklore, which is mostly stories about non-biographical songs. As I’m sure many others told you, you should listen to the trilogy of the teenage love triangle: Cardigan (pov of the girl who got cheated on), August (pov of the girl he cheated with) and Betty (pov of the cheater). Really beautiful storytelling.

also, everyone should look for the paper airplane symbol as Taylor goes into the piano bench. this song is, at least in large part, about Harry Styles. The whole notion that these were three songs with three fictional characters is just misdirection. And "Falling" came out on Dec. 13th with "Cardigan" coming out about 6 months later. Listen to the call and response in the lyrics between the two songs.

I just feel the need to point out that this video was released at the end of July 2020 (with the full folklore album), and Taylor didn’t even START writing the album until ~April 2020, after lockdown started. To have made that whole album plus this video (that was not lacking in any way, as one might expect from a video made at that time), is simply amazing.

YES! This is my favorite video of hers and I'm so happy you got the metaphor of music saving her life right away. It's just so beautiful. I think the video symbolizes her journey through the music industry. It's brought her to the most beautiful places, but also the worst. The shot of her clinging for life to the piano gives me chills!!! Also it's just a theory, but I think the piano key is short because when the video starts, it's the 7th key, and her 7th album got cut short because of covid (there was no tour).
B is also the 7th note of the c major scale. I would definitely think that key symbolizes the Lover era being cut short. It also has a double meaning with Betty, beginning with B, but I would place bets it having more to do with Lover than anything else given the rest of the video.

Oo I have some info on this, it was filmed in a day and a half, during peak covid so minimal crew, all three locations cabin,forest and water filmed on a sound stage in LA. (For effects needed and to stop anyone from getting photos etc)
This has been my most requested video of Taylor on your channel… thank you for an amazing video and reaction… feels like I am watching it again for the first time… the storytelling of healing ❤️🩹 and stages of love always leaves me in awe… willow next🥰😅the mv is very separate from the love triangle in my opinion… it’s about how she immerses herself in music during good and bad times and music is always there for her… music is her soulmate….even in dark times during the storm!
The piano key B is broken, maybe because this song is from Betty's perspective, and James broke her heart. Now this broken B key represents Betty's broken heart...
Re: the wide ocean shot - I actually suspect that pretty much ALL of the water we see is CGI, and Taylor and the piano are reallllly tightly keyed into the shot. Like, the bit of water covering her lower half is real, and the water sloshing around the piano's edges is real, but I think the rest is 3D simulation. Just my guess from eyeballing it! :)

Low key- was going to wait to release this one but I was too excited.
And she made this during the pandemic with a very small crew because of covid restrictions at the time. She's one of the very few artist that made music or even a video during that time.
She’s also one of few artists who did it without pissing off the various unions involved, making sure to exceed bare minimum safety requirements. (Just like she made her Eras movie during the recent SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood. Lotta folks were assuming she’d just used non-union talent, but nope. She went to the union, asked what they wanted, and gave it to them, that simple.)

I know this has already been stated in prior comments but Cardigan is part of the Cardigan-August-Betty fictional high school love triangle that Taylor created for her Folklore album. “Cardigan” is from Betty’s POV as she reflects on her then-brokenheart some 30 yrs after James cheated on her with August/Augusta/Augustine; “August” is from the POV of the girl James cheated on Betty with, and is also reflective after much time has passed; “Betty” is from James’ *current* POV after returning to school from summer break & finding out Betty knew all along of his cheating. “Betty” is his “apology.”
Taylor talks about the creation & meaning behind each of these 3 songs, in fact, about every song on Folklore, with Jack Antonoff & Aaron Dessner in their “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions” concert experience currently on Disney+. It’s brilliant!!
I humbly request you react to the remaining high school trilogy in order (lyrical video or the Long Pond Studio Sessions with their corresponding interview intros), please, and since you already got “Cardigan” down, “August (my favorite!) & “Betty” will then complete the lyrical puzzle. I highly adore “Willow,” too, but it’s not part of the lyrical trilogy, although the video does pick up where the “Cardigan” mv left off.

This is the first music video from her post covid, post lover. There are so many easter eggs in this video that i feel like tie into the bejeweled video, this video is a queen of easter eggs. I love it. To be a swifitie and get this to drop the same day she announced it was unheard of. Ill never forget that day in july and December 12th for evermore. 🫶💙🫶💙

Also, I love that you’re looking at the forest section of the MV and can’t tell if it’s real or fake. 😂 As I understand it, it’s a lot like the frozen and mud forests were for Out of the Woods: there’s a LOT of green, tree-and-vine covered practical stage set with some additional rendering to the background for depth, adding in the water, etc. (As many of her rain shows have shown, pianos don’t play so well when full of water…)

Rodrigo Prieto was the DP for this - he also worked with Taylor on The Man (she obviously storyboarded so much of The Man off The Wolf of Wallstreet, which Prieto was the DP for) , and he has nothing but extremely complimentary things to say about her. It fills my heart with joy on how beautiful you think this video is. It was a natural progression for her To direct this after directing the man from lover. I love that her not being able to find. A female director led to her directing. We might not have all too well. The short film, if that conundrum didn't happen with the man. Who will ever know?💙🫶💙
