This Series is the GOLD STANDARD of Magic Mountain Documentaries. Hands Down. Thank you for spreading knowledge and history of a place that is so important to theme park history and so close to me both literally and metaphorically.

Wait, SFMM put in a press release that Superman was going to get 1800 riders per hour?? lmao!!!
These have been absolutely wonderful to watch! Amazing research!! Hopefully I see you around magic mountain someday!
No way Tyler’s here! I know Troy is an enthusiast but I didn’t know you had interest in the park
Episode 4 is about to be crazy
Fancy seeing you here!
From 1987 to now, I’ve seen and lived through everything in your video. Goliath and Revolution are my favs.
I love how Chris likely spent more time on these videos than all of Six Flags.
It’s as if the fans care more for the park than the company itself.
Love how youre selling Goliath like it was being sold at the time. It feels like it lost all of it prestige after just a few years but it really was a coaster achievement when it was first built and conceived.
Oh yeah, i started going to the park in 2000 and it was THE ride
my favorite series of this channel
same
Same. It’s probably the most complicated of all of them.
@@coasterhockygamingboy9549 True dat
The fact that Six Flags kept outdoing themselves to beat the competition is commendable. They genuinely care about the theme park. No other theme park in California beats Magic Mountain.
Depends on who you ask. While I do enjoy going to the park, working for it was a terrible experience. I’m much happier at Universal Studios Hollywood due to its better pay, health and 401k benefits, and being union based.
@@Emplordxiii I'm not talking about working there at all. 🤨
I'm visiting Universals next month but it does not compare to Six Flags. Six Flags is way more fun, more thrilling, while Universals is more family friendly.
Magic Mountain isn't really a THEME park, it's more of an amusement park. Its theming can't compete with Knott's or Disney, and they don't really try to.
But at the same time, Disney doesn't try to do coasters like Magic Mountain, and while Knott's has a few good ones, they can't match the quantity. Almost everything at MM today is a damn good ride. (Looking at you, Scream).
But a dozen parks outside of California beat Magic Mountain. 20 million people live within 1 hour of MM, which is open all year, but parks that are only open half the year draw more visitors. (Cedar Point, Kings Island, Canada's Wonderland) They only have half or less that population within a 1 hour radius, but still draw over 3.6 million annual visitors. MM should draw 6 million yearly visitors, but their line up is mostly overrated filler coasters. I've ridden 500 coasters, and only X2 is an unique world class coaster. Tatsu is a really good flyer and West Coast Racers is a very fun dueler. Twisted Colossus was a let down and the rest of their line up is filler. The park's layout is horrible and the management is average at best. Travel all across the country and you will see many much smaller parks are better experiences.
@@robertpolk9910 idk why youre trying talk shit about about the best amusement park in California, but not all of get to just visit Cedar Point. Some of us gotta work. I stand by what I said though. Six Flags is the best in California and nothing beats it here.
Whoever disliked needs help from a licensed professional. I hope an Ohio enthusiast can do CP and KI in the same fashion one day! Once again excellent tribute to your former home park!
For a few years now, there has been a project in the works for a Kings Island 50th anniversary documentary which will debut in 2022. It's being made by some very dedicated fans of Kings Island, with lots of crowd-sourced footage and photos from over the years, so I have high hopes for it.
Look up Okay Coasters' video....Cedar Point, The Winning Formula
My favorite era of Magic Mountain!!! Absolutely could not wait for what new attractions would come to fruition during this time period!!
Except, towards the end of the video where Newhall Land and Premier@26:31 were planning on turning Magic Mountain into a FULL TRUE DESTINATION RESORT, ON SOME DISNEY TYPE LEVEL...............ALL I HAVE TO ASK IS:
*WHYYYYYY*
*WHYYYYYY*
*WHYYYYYYYYYY DIDN'T THEY GO THROUGH WITH THOSE PLANS!!!!!!!*
*MAGIC MOUNTAIN CERTAINLY WOULD'VE BEEN A DESTINATION PARK IN THE TRUEST SENSE......GIVING THEIR BIGGEST RIVAL, CEDAR POINT, A SERIOUS RUN FOR THEIR MONEY!!!!!*
I searched all over for a followup on this and found nothing. They appear to have abandoned it without much word
@@AirtimeThrills *AAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!*
I have very much enjoyed this series so far, and the videos are put together so well!!!!
Chris, you know you done messed up right? This doc is so good that we now expect you to do more and more docs. Kings Island, Six Flags over Texas, Carowinds,,etc. Heck, even individual rides. Won't have much time for the family because you will be busy. LOL
Great series. I hope you do more and by all means. Always make time for family.
Haha yeah if i do another itll be next year and ill take my time with it. This one was rushed a little (to the point where the last 2 episodes aren't even done)
@@AirtimeThrills The A-hole in me is going "forget your time and get busy on the next one." LOL. But the man and human in me are going take all the time you need to be with your family and get some mental rest for yourself. i.e. me time.
This series on the history of SS Magic Mountain is incredible. You really did your research, my friend. He don't hear about this place talked about in coaster enthusiasts circles as Cedar Point always dominates the conversation. Thanks so much for shining the light on this often ignored but still iconic park.
Superman: The Escape opened on March 15, 1997
“sea world has jumping fish”
i love that
That's a very truthful statement about East Coast transplants wanting to relive memories of Cyclone. My father grew up in NYC in the '40s and '50s. And would visit Coney Island all the time. When we took family trips to Magic Mountain, he LOVED riding Psyclone. Even after it got bad. I remember waiting for him after we all took one lap. He wanted to go back for more. We were good.
This is a wonderful series, and I really appreciate you not just for putting it out there but for doing all the work behind it. I don't know what kind of awards the amusement industry gives for documentaries like this, but you deserve something. The background information and storytelling is, in my mind, far superior to flashy 4G POVs. Excellent work.
Thanks for the feedback, it was definitely a passion project and I appreciate everyone taking the time to watch it.
The theme park has entered the Time Warner era in 1993
Long time fan here. Hope you know that these are the highlight of my week, every week.

Batman: The Ride opened on March 26, 1994

didn’t expect to see steve garvey mentioned in this video. crazy that he isn’t in the hall of fame
Next video: Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Bill Russell
Keep up the great work! Loving this so much!
Disneyland Attendance: 3% down
Sea World Attendance: 8% down
Universal Studios Attendance: 9% down
Not a good way for AlphaZero
Yeah but both Disneyland and Universal Hollywood get much more attendance than Magic Mountain(currently, Disneyland averages at 20 million and Universal at 10 million per year while MM gets anywhere between 3 - 4 million guests per year. Plus, Magic Mountain starts to cry when they can’t handle 30K guests on a busy day(Both Universal and Disneyland can handle that number with ease, the latter considers 30k a slow day.).
May I have a question 🙋♀️ for you please 🙏 Airtime Thrills, Mystery Lake was located occupied the space where Hurricane Harbor sits now?
Thats right
Amazing series!!! 👌🏼 I knew SFMM had gang problems, but not as many as there actually were! 🤦🏻♀️
Psyclone backwards?. Eeeeee. Growing up in NorCal, I only remember the 89 earthquake. Had no idea it was thought that the SoCal earthquake of 94 may have damaged Psyclone, causing it to get rougher. I was there in 91 and 93 and recall liking it a lot, so that could be very true. The heavy trains likely also contributed. Just why would the park hire B&M, a company they hadn’t worked with before, for the trains? I’d like to know more about that.
Hey airtime thrills! I’m at six flags New England! Heading to Wicked Cyclone!
I continued to live in southern California during the 1990s. I had completed graduate school, and began my working career. This made trips to theme parks far less frequent. I can only remember a few trips during this decade. One of them was shortly after Batman: The Ride was introduced. The Batman stunt show was also operating. It seemed amazing. The park had lots of roller coasters then, and the sheer number of them spread out the crowds (except for the newest, which always had more people in line).
Two things I remember were things I considered shameless. There was either fresh or frozen lemonade being sold from a cart parked halfway through the queue for Batman: The Ride. Two sizes were offered: You'd think they would be "Large" and "Small". No, they called them "Regular" and "Child Sized". The other item was photos of a food item. It appeared to be a hamburger. It tasted like it was soybeans. I can't prove it one way or another, but there was no text as to the content of the item, just a photo. Deceptive.
We agreed "Viper" was the best coaster in the park. I still think it is.
A few things I didn't mention from parts 1 and 2. One was that I rode on Tidal Wave. Once. Even when riding it, I thought I was doing something stupid. I was. I got drenched. I was in wet clothes for the rest of the day. Two, I remember going up to the observation tower, which was kind of fun. However, there were two levels, the top, and a lower level. My friends and I looked around from the top, then took the stairs to the lower level. And then right back up. It was filled with teenage couples necking. I don't remember if it was embarrassment or a desire to give them privacy.
This documentary is so, so good. Still 2 episodes out from finishing but I’m loving this. Would absolutely love to see more of these about different parks. Great stuff man!!!!
my mom, aunt, and uncle were there on april 17 1993. because of this, my mom is still always very nervous about me going there with my friends (i'm 14)
Funny how they could never get away with promoting ride rotations as a “new” ride.
Poor, poor Flashback!
Goliath seems to get a lot of hate nowadays, but it was loved at the time. Perhaps, like Viper it hasn't aged particularly well (the early 90s to early 2000s were when roller coastera became far more intense, like we know them today, but lack the smoothness of their more contemporary counterparts).
I’m excited for the next video! So many things to explain!
excellent work as always...looking forward to the next episode 💯✨🙃
They also had that crazy commercial with the demented dancing old man and that earworm song. They also started to be crazy expensive and the flower beds started to stink like sewage. This was a time where magic mountain almost seemed to be slummy. The food was bad and the park attitude was blah. I am so proud they finally got their crap together. This is still my fave and my home park. Yeah but you had to ride certain rides to check on your car to make sure your tires were still on your car and parking was hella expensive. My cousin loved superman till he let go of an orange , forgot to catch it and it broke his nose lol , now he hates it.
Once all five parts are a continuous playlist, I’m going to wear it out with repeated views.
🙌
we're gonna have to wait 9 years for part 6 :(
@@jevinday I’m setting my watch now.
That Flashback commercial 😂
So, so, so cool!!!! It's so great to be putting so many pieces together now. Being a team member, learning all this stuff, it's so cool to hear you say something about a ride and then realize "oh, THAT'S why that's the way this is." Chris, I have to say that Six Flags needs you as an official historian. I'm certain that at least 9 out of 10 people who work full time for the company don't even have 50% of the knowledge you do about this park. And I'm all here for it.
Haha i would love the official title of six flags historian. I also worked at the park from 2003-2011 so my experience there will come into play for the next episode
You had to grow up here in the 90’s to get it. You could try…but you would not succeed.😜
Looking forward to the next episode. I really enjoy this series
Great job my friend! Ive saud this before, i started going to magic mountain before you were born. You did your homework. Thank you for this video!
We've hit my childhood now. I had many season passes to Magic Mountain and have fond memories of the park in the 90s.
Wasnt life better then?
It was this decade where Magic Mountain went from being just another park in the Six Flags chain, to being arguably Six Flags' flagship park.
Just so well done...I would love to see you continue the series with other six flags parks, but do what makes you happy and keeps the quality high
I'm gonna wait and see if this series catches on, I'd love to do more, but with the crazy amount of effort involved and the view count similar to my quizzes, I'll probably focus my efforts with something else
Part 4 - 2000 / 2009
Part 5 - 2010 / 2020
2 more to go
Do you think that it would be cool if some one made a rmc raptor but it’s a inverted coaster
That would be cool but the forces would be weird if inverted

Another question 🙋♀️ for you please 🙏 Airtime Thrills, Mystery Lake at Magic Mountain was drained in 1993 to create space for the construction 🚧 of Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, did construction 🚧 on Hurricane Harbor begin in 1993 or 1994?
From what i can tell, construction started in 1994 but not sure how early they started
That’s fine
Do you miss your old home park?
Yeah but I'll be back eventually
I’m so excited to watch this!!
"Six Stabs" lol.
Magic mountain is actually my favourite rollercoaster park I haven't been to, then Cedar point, Hershey, Dollywood, king's island, Busch gardens.(both).. love these vids.
You forgot the to talk about the piece of gum 10 degrees from the right leg under the 3rd bench to the 5th restaurant on the left. Disappointed
Dangit i missed that article
CHRIS. THEY JUST ADDED NEW CARTS ON THE BIG APPLE COASTER AT THE NEW YORK NEW YORK. I JUST WENT ON IT AND IT NOW HAS AIRTIME. ITS SO MUCH BETTER. However the lap bars are still bad.
Nice Chris! You are really good aty making video's like this, next to your ranking video's!!
Money is bad news for the planet... Without money, gangs would not even exist... Think about it!
I don't like Six Flags, but if I had to visit a Six Flags park, it's going to be Magic Mountain ;-)
Greetings from the Netherlands...
I remember watching a bunch of commercials for Six Flags in the early- to mid-90s. The one I remember the most is the one for Batman: the Ride.
I also remember watching news footage for the opening of Superman: the Escape on NBC's Today in 1997.
I vividly remember the commercials featuring riddlers revenge (tho i think the ad was just for the park itself) but funny to look back at that as the big new ride
@@AirtimeThrills I seem to remember seeing that one too, but I don't remember it being promoted as much as Batman and Superman were.
I love this series! So well done!
Valhalla isn’t a coaster! It’s a water ride!
😆
Yeah the 90s. This is when I knew the park well. This was also the decade when the Southland got some serious competition from Las Vegas. This was a big part of the coaster wars. Desperado at Buffalo Bills, Manhattan Madness at New York, New York, the High Roller at the Stratosphere, they brought the heat.
Don't think too ill of Magic Mountain on the stabbings and such. SoCal had a mini baby boom of young people and it caused problems everywhere. Palm Springs grew to resent Spring Breakers. MTV mad Spring Break this weeks long bacchanal where ever the dropped anchor: Dayton Beach or Santa Monica. Irvine had the same problem with Summer Jam and there is not enough space to go into the Forum in downtown LA.
One amenity I wish Magic Mountain would have added was descent transportation around the park. The Metro was really showing its age and after a couple hikes up and over the hill it winded everyone. Never want to do the hike from Colossus to Ninja again.
An additional thought: wasn't there a Beverly Hill Cop sequel centered around SFMM? I want to say Cop 3. It didn't have all the filming at the park but definitely opening and establishing shots.
Fantastic!
It felt like the '90s were "Knott's and Disneyland saw attendance drop while Magic Mountain saw attendance increase."
This brought back so many memories, and yes, MM was notorious for gang violence
As a resident of Stevenson Ranch, I take offence to the phrase "Dusty old Santa Clarita" and refer to it only as awesometown. 🤣🤣
Batman's que line in the early days was one of my favorites. Still to this day I havent come across anything so immersive. Sadly now its an empty shell to what it was. The problem with Six Flags MM is they never did upkeep/refresh on the rides and ques.
Were u in a theme park show for halloween like 15 yrs ago?
@@RogersGirl88 I was part of a couple Halloween events yes.
Viper was one of my favorite rides. Ninja wasn't all that as you had to sit at the very front to get the best thrills. But yes I got season and would visit Magic Mountain frequently.
a lot of earthquakes has affected sfmm
Yeah.......but the park usually would still survive relatively unscathed.
Maybe magic mountain needed a REAL Batman to stop all this crime
The best part of the late 90s was that I was a tall 6-7 year old and had an older brother who was 13 so you already know he was forcing me on stuff. 😂 the best decade I swear
I love these keep them up!
23:15 Oh boy on a hot day that tunnel is a pleasant surprise. The air conditioning goes really well with the theming and it cools you off double whammy!
When did six flags introduce season passes like the ones today where you can visit every park? I could look it up, but I was wondering if the pass situation was the same back in the early 2000s
My first pass was in 2001 and i was able to visit all the parks with it. Im not sure offhand how far that goes back
1979......Airtime Chris must've missed that in his first episode during the 70's when Six Flags Acquired Magic Mountain.
@@seanlewis1148 i actually do remember that, six flags offering that first pass in 1979 and i mentioned it in the video, but he was asking about the pass tbat gets you into every six flags park. Did the pass in 1979 do that? I know they had a few parks back then
Theming Flashbacks opening to a baby shower is an insult to babies
I am very curious to know what is your favorite six flags park
