Thanks for this and all your other content John! I fired this video up for setting up my SW4/Rev combo and just floated the CastleLink software over UA-cam on the right. It was nice to just listen and walk through the settings as you did. :D
I run a CC2850 slate with my mamba X. I use the white wire in a 3rd channel for an adjustable drag brake. I can adjust it on the fly which has been amazing for varying terrain. Specifically downhills.
Great video. I agree with you on everything, I am running SW4's with 25% punch control, 30% drag brake on ~10lb trucks, and I usually cut off at 3.4 as well. Keep up the good work. I havent tried the new software and the roll on brake yet, but its on my to do list.
Thanks John for sharing this video. Really helpful. Can you talk about the advanced drag settings available in the mamba x in maybe the next video? Thanks
I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on LiPo care. I enjoy crawling/trailing but also love to get some bash on. The bashing is killing my batteries though. When I bash... that trigger area between dead band to the handle is hot lava... and I also love long runs in deep snow. I'm puffing and losing cells within far less than a year. I currently charge to 4.2 and LVC at 3.2. I'll try your advice from the video here and tighten that band. ESC wise, I run almost exclusively Castle systems, the Mamba X being my preference. I've been running low startup power and punch control of 70% to try and save my batteries. I am about to dispose a set of 4 Power Hobby 5200mAh, 3 cell, 75c batteries. From my Castle graphs, I've been running significantly under the nearly 400A continuous discharge rate, peaks at around 160A. For my bashers, I'm running a Monster Slash on paddles and a "Monster" Rustler on paddles, both still plastic with upgraded drive trains so they are pretty light... I do bash my Bomber on Fling Kings, but haven't really experienced post run puffing on it. I've tried a couple battery brands with similar results. Any answers or suggestions must not include "throttle" or "control", particularly when combined. Help me John Holmes, you're my only hope.
It was helpful. Thank you :) I saw this on another company's esc. Can you tell me what function it is? "synchronized rectification close/open" thank you!!
You didn't mention the new Roll-on Drag-brake feature. I'm sure it's not called that. But it's the features that softens the onset of the drag-brake. I set mine at Medium. I also set my drag-brake at about 50 to 70% using the Revolvers. At 50% it holds perfect on downhills in 1st gear and in 2nd gear it creeps just enough so I can drive without throttle.
Jarryd Wark You're absolutely right. That's exactly what it does...it softens the the drag-brake as you let off the throttle. It'll definitely save on parts. I have to reprogram about 10 trucks(between all 3 of us)before the Pro-line By The Fire event. I have a very similar program to John but I'm going to move the voltage cut-off to 3.4 and "medium" on the drag-brake roll-on.
After following your setup for my revolver I reconfigured my other rig's mambax/3800kv sensored setup using high startup and punch control and a throttle curve like the revolver on 3S and that system simply came alive over previous runs. TY for your time and knowledge :D
Do you also recommend 30% punch for your basher rigs? I have some gens Ace 50c that seem to be browning out with my punch at 60%. Even though the hexfly 35c that I also run have no issues
Hey John. Great video. I just got my sw4 and revolver v2. I noticed a new version of the firmware is available since your video was made and it offers drag brake ramp. What do you typically set it at? Thanks.
John, generally, the low feed gives more efficiency and less energy. High advance gives more power over efficiency (motor heat). Low Timing would make the car weaker or slower?
Ok I'm glad I watched this so your saying the lower the punch percentage the faster the take off? I always thought the opposite! I've always set my punch high thinking it would take off faster.
Hey John I'm new.enjoying ya videos.thanks. Wondering if u or anyone can give me some tips.on esc for my new tl 02.i got a 2.4ghz control.but stucked on not knowing which esc to buy.thanks anyone please help
Do you, or are you willing, to custom program esc's bought from HH directly? For instance, I like trail running and some crawling. If I bought the holmes esc to go with the HH puller pro 540 I already purchased direct from ya, could you program the esc for me for those general purposes, however you see fit? I understand that driver skill and other factors could make it annoying with certain customers complaining about the settings, but just add a no re-programming clause and charge appropriately for your time and energy, it might be worth it. It's the thing I worry about most before buying an esc, that factory settings are going to suck. I refuse to use apple or new windows software, so I can't really program my own...
Congratulations on the video, upgrade your software to 3.78 and test the Added 'Drag Brake Ramp' feature. Allows user to adjust the rate at which drag is applied at neutral?
I hope this question doesn't advertise my ignorance, but here goes. Are programmers specific to a certain motor, or certain radio type? I have two flysky GT3B's and can load up to six profiles on them. (currently have three profiles on each one) I only have two 2845 motors that are same brand and 5900kv rating. The other four brushless are various brands, but all rated around 4400kv Interestingly - the only ESC that doesn't stutter is one that came with the first truck I bought, and I'm pretty sure it only has a 45amp rating.
programmers are specific to the ESC brand. I typically don't have different profiles for different radios or motors, but I mostly just have a fleet of crawlers.
There is an unofficial Android app that seems to work well on Android market. I've also used a cheap $50 windows Stream 7 tablet with the desktop castle software. Both options will require a USB OTG adapter for your castle link/ field cards normal mini USB cable
I'm having problems a lrp spin super rate now so I bought a used traxxas slash 4x4 I got a killer deal on Ebay but when car came would only go forward so I attempted to reset it now I'm having issues it's not getting full power when I give it throttle do I need to get a programming card you think? Because I can't find anything online on this speed control?
I am purchasing 2 of your revolver 1400, and noticed I cant find the trail master BLE Pro in anyone's store, which esc would you recommend for a heavy 1/8 scale custom crawler
Great information Mr Holmes. I’m going to share this on our FaceBook group. Please check out Texas RC Rock Racing here on YT and the group on Face Book. RC Rock Bouncer Racing can use your help. A lot of racers are already using your equipment. Thank you for helping us.
75 bucks seems kinda steep for temp sensors. The only time I wish I had that feature is with my boat. Water cooling seems to run cooler than in a speedcar ,but figuring out how much prop you can run before temps becomes an issue is a hassle taking the boat out of the water taping and untaping to check temps. Or if you pick up line is clogged. If you plan on owning rc boats in the future might not be a bad idea to get a radio with telemetry other than that I don't see a need for it.
Hi John. Just subbed your channel and love the content so far. Do you have a Facebook page or a contact email? I have an old Tmaxx that I want to turn into a camera car. I have an idea of the requirements but I have no idea of which motor, esc and battery setup to use. The more I look, the more confused I get. HAAALP!! much appreciated if you can point me in a direction.
I use the Mamba X WP Esc with 1406Series Slate 2850kv motor..!! If i want a motor that Can run the 6S, in My crawler. Wich motor Can do that..?? One Of yours..??? I always run my motors unless testing, because frankly I like how they drive more than everything else. ESC, not always mine will be the best choice. The BLE does not work as well sensorless as the SW4, so I'm currently using the SW4 to match best with the sensorless revolver. Castle ESC, Holmes Motor.
Yeah, the BLE is a great ESC still, but the SW4 and Mamba X are newer and bring new tech to the party. Either way the motor is unmatched in performance!
I'm running a sw4 and revolver, I swapped motors to a goolrc4400kv for some mud runs and I swear to God it's as smooth as the revolver. I don't understand
It's a credit to you John for testing/showing other brands instead of only pushing the Holmes products, thank you!
Thanks John this is exactly what I was looking for I am adding Mamba x and 1800 kv Revolver to my Rig
Was setting up a revolver and got to timing and he said it didn't like timing so this was perfect. 👌

Thanks John always good to go over how to program. You helped me understand punch better and why you set it to 30%.
Love this videos, , very informative, ,thanks brother
Thanks for the explanation and thought behind the setup
Liked the 4.18v and 3.4v reasoning!
Awesome I appreciate you sharing, I just learned a lot from this video. I will watch for more

Very detailed and informative video. I just need one this detailed pertaining to my specific esc. Almost none of the parameters are the same.

"synchronized rectification close/open"

On-throttle drag. No telling which means on, lol! The gates would be closed with rectification on...

I made another vid to be released later where I update the link to get the feature. Once I'm walking again I'll make a vid tuning it in the yard.
I used to always set my LVC to 3.2 per cell, but I too usually go 3.3 or 3.4 now to be a little nicer to my batteries.
You can also use the Punch Control to help with traction on launch.
is it possible to flash holmes firmware on any of the castle ESC? that would be amazing
can you talk more about your throttle curve?
After following your setup for my revolver I reconfigured my other rig's mambax/3800kv sensored setup using high startup and punch control and a throttle curve like the revolver on 3S and that system simply came alive over previous runs. TY for your time and knowledge :D

When you set throttle curve does that curve also effect the reverse curve?
I believe it does.

Yes i esc temp live link in racing and i have an overide programed to a 3ch switch so if i need to burn it to the ground i can

already recorded it :)
On a TRX4 Mamba X with 1800 Revolver I run 20% drag and follow your other settings
Is there a BEC setting in castle link ..
I needed this video! I get all of my crawler electronics from Holmes, when are you getting Mamba MonsterX in stock? Thanks John, you’re the Best!
Should have more in stock in about a week.
@@HolmesHobbies Hoorah Thanks!

My sidewinder 4 shows up as unknown controller. And it says failed when I try to link up with it. Any ideas? Does the esc need to be updated mayb?
Can Castle products be programmed from a smartphone out tablet?
Bummer! Thanks for the input.

No

How does the b link work with a bec, red wire disabled
I have an issue with my mamba micro x I cannot get it to do anything as far getting it to link to castle link.

sidewinder 4. The BLE controller is discontinued now.
@@HolmesHobbies thanks, I'll use this video to help figure out the programming for it
I run slate 1900 with a mamba x at 100% drag brake in my trx4, in low range it's like an e-brake.
Pulled out the road kill voice right off the bat. Lol

3500 is really the max KV I feel is suitable for crawling.
Yeah I agree I really want to get a 1800 revolver next.
But it was all my local hobby store had at the time for brushless.
