Spent many an RE lesson in the hut at the bottom of the hill with you Mr McClean. You were/are a great teacher. Mrs Ferris you never messed with. Mr Johnstone got me into cricket which I continued on with to this day. 1996-2001
Hey Stewart. Many thanks for your kind words of encouragement. Underneath it all Mrs Ferris had a heart of gold. And I'm glad Mr Johnston fuelled your life long love of cricket. Overall I had a brilliant time at Newtownbreda H. S. Granted there were some very difficult pupils but apart from that my days gave a lot satisfaction and we had such fun times. I do look back with a degree of sadness that it is all behind me and I will not have those pupil and staff friendships again. Good times.
@@TomMcClean yes I look back on with mixed feelings as I didn’t enjoy the studying until I hit A Level but the quality of teachers we had was great. Mr Hawthorne was another who helped me with a passion for modern history. Different times but look forward to time off and meeting older pupils and the stories they have to tell.
You were the best teacher in the school. You were the only one that I remember who let people think for themselves. I learnt more in the long run because of you, Tom. God bless you. ❤
Hi MT. I hope it was a good experience! Yes my wife was the school matron there in the office. We enjoyed our days at NHS. They were good times. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Tom….I’ve noticed several commemorative attributes to different schools that you have profiled over the last year or so, and was wondering why Belfast seemingly is closing all these learning institutions. I remember watching you profile a Technical School, and another in the Upper Newtownards Road area. Is there something in the planning works for rebuilding of newer schools? Where are all the new students going to be taught.
Hi GC. I'm afraid the overall picture on this is like everything else in N Ireland. It appears that the powers that be seem to believe that closing smaller primary or secondary schools or hospitals etc and amalgamating them in city/large town locations will be for the greater good of all. It is all seen as progress and a money saving exercise. I believe that this is not necessarily the case. Bigger city location schools are certainly not always for the better. They breed problems of their own because of size and the fact that a sense of community is usually lost in these changes.
@ ….I’m totally with you on this issue. Redrawing school boundaries to remove a hub of importance like a school in any local community isolates the convince for children and removes the fostering of involvement of parents and students from that community who can’t get to the more distant locations as easily. Perhaps…Demographically things must be changing?….Maybe the inner city is suffering from student growth population. What’s worse is finding funding for newer schools going forward if the inner city needs change…. It will be almost impossible to rebuild especially if land affordability isn’t not available. Doesn’t look good!
I'm afraid it doesn't matter what voices of people like you and me are saying GV. The people in power and the planners who are driven by financial gain are not listening. These people want a profit now! They do not care what the long term impact of their actions will be, because by that time they will have moved on or are retired.
Hi Michael. Yes this would be most pupil's experience, mixed memories. It all depended on which set of teachers you got and who your classmates were. No I was thinking of someone else. his name will come to me. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
Hi Tom, aww so sad watching this, nothing but good memories from Newtownbreda. I was in 8B-12B. Mrs Killen was my form teacher, nice woman but I wasnt always on my best behaviour with her looking back. What became of, Mr Hawthorne? he was a maniac but loved his class. What about, Mrs Maneely, Mr Henry? We called Mr Henry, Egon from the Ghostbusters 😂 and there was a maths teacher that is escaping me, really nice woman, dark hair this would have been back in 2002 it wasnt Mrs McMahon, it was the other lady...any idea? are they still teaching/retired? Mrss Ferris who taught French, I remember her looking at the ceiling everytime she would talk to someone 😂funny the odd things you remember. Cheers mate.
@@jazzhands7771 Thats it, Breadon! Thank you. Nice lady, always thought she was a good teacher. Mrs Ranson, rancid breath 😂, everytime she told you off she got up close to your bake where you smelled her breath. Hawthorne went into the store room one time in class and my mate shouted, Mr Hawthornes a jewhovahs witness and he came out and went baldy I thought we were dead 😂 Mr Johnstone, we called him bacon eye and then there was Mrs McCabry, something is telling me she was a bit of a girl, thats a vibe I always got with her lol. Im getting a wee bit cheeky so I better not tell anymore stories lol but in all honesty, Newtownbreda was a laugh. Good times.
@@jazzhands7771lol, who was the hockey teacher with the curly mullet? Always had the sports gear on? Is she still teaching? And then there was Mr Migilligan I think he was called? He was spot on as well.
