Oahu vs. Maui please! Enjoy your videos, we are seriously considering this move. My wife is a nurse and could work on either island though Oahu has more hospital/work options. Mahalo🤙🏼!

True, Oahu has more options for medical professionals and more housing options in general. So when you two are choosing between Oahu and Maui - considering work options - I could see how most nurses would lean towards Oahu. Besides work, when it comes to lifestyle - which largely is based on your housing situation - that really is up to you as a family. Oahu and Maui are the most populated and most visited islands in Hawaii, which goes to show you how much they have to offer.
Honestly, this is can be a very lengthly conversation. It's like when people ask me Ewa Beach or Mililani? Downtown Honolulu or Kailua? Single family home or townhome?
Mahalo for your suggestion, as I am SURE we will do a Oahu vs Maui video in the near future!

Maui is like one big "Laguna Nigel Southern California". its kind of boring and all looks the same...If you like that then you'll love Maui. It doesn't have the 'Hawaiian' feeling in my opinion....Also No jobs there though unless you are in the building trade or have a remote gig.
Oahu has more diversity in people and places and experiences and interesting and a wide variety of things to do. Oahu also has better and more beaches in general although Maui has a few good ones on the Kihei side.

Kailua da best. Born and raised there. Spent every day at the beach. And it’s much cooler because of the trade winds. I go back every year. The beach is the same as when I grew up there - no crowds except at the beach park.

I grew up in Hawaii Kai, moved away 20 years ago. Grandma sold house. Love it out there though.

    aloha! its all correct.
I few more things from someone who has lived in both cities and currently i live beachside Kailua (yeah, i know I'm lucky). Also leave you with a quote from my buddy who is 3rd generation Kailuan and grew up in Kailua.
Kailua - No need A/C.!! Better beaches (best in the state). Residents are very relaxed/more humble/more low key about their wealth. No show off's here! Very Walkable/Bikeable and the city has plans in place to put in more sidewalks around town too. 3 mile long beach where you get to see same people every day and is more friendly. Older homes though, and most need work, even the pricy ones. we have above ground utilities/telephone poles which is kinda ugly but you get used to it. Weekend traffic is crazy from non-kailua locals and tourists. Median house price are about the same as Hawaii Kai - i think around $1.5m right now.
Hawaii Kai - You Need A/C... its hot... No good beaches really except Sandy's and that's too small and not relaxing. Residents there are uptight/arrogant/not sociable. Very hilly and hot so you never see people outside going for a relaxing stroll .. Newer / nicer homes and in better shape generally than Kailua though. Underground utilities are nice. Traffic is mostly only commuting or around Costco. if you like staying indoors with your A/C on full blast then Hawaii Kai is for you.
My buddy who grew up in Kailua and is a House Painter and meets customers from Hawaii Kai and Kailua once told me "You know why Hawaii Kai people are so angry all the time?, its coz their beaches suck and they know it.. " LOL True story!

Hahaha. I can say a few things:
      1. I am not able to speak like this (in public) due to ethics and steering and just trying to be a nice a neutral guy
      2. I sense the bias haha and I get it and there are some truths here…
      3. ^^ some similar things could be said in reverse…..👀…… and I’d have a light hearted chuckle and understand those truths and half-truths as well. 🤣😆🤣
      Thanks for your comment :)

And p.s. there are predominantly amazing people in both places and in most places on this island :)

Can you do a video on insurance cost if buying ocean waterfront vs next to a lake/pond on Oahu. Also, is hurricane insurance part of the insurance or is it a separate policy? Can you just buy hurricane insurance only? Are there anything else about home insurance or anything different that we need to think about when buying a home on Oahu? Thanks for your informative videos!

Good insight - haha this is exactly what the wife and I have been debating about since 2018, realistically looking to make the move in 2 years (too soon to plan?)

Never too soon. In fact we just helped a family purchase a home in Hawaii Kai even though they will not even move back for a year or so. They just wanted to lock it in ASAP. Fill out the contact form on our website to get started today, or shoot me a text anytime.

Alternative transportation is a wise move in Hawaii Kai? Meaning cargo electric bikes easily big enough for a Costco run??? Consider this No Gas
A bike can go where cars can’t

If you're haole (Caucasian) you'll be happier in Kailua than other places on Oahu. A good number of local Hawaiians resent "the colonizers," and an unpleasant interaction with someone like that, if you're not hardened to it, can ruin your day. But it's 100% racial which, in a way, is good. If you have black hair and brown eyes, and especially if you have a little Hispanic or middle eastern in your background, you'll probably slip by under the radar. But having blonde hair or non-brown eyes basically puts a target on your back. Also, make sure you're okay with Japanese culture because that is the dominant culture in Hawaii. Most of what is called "Hawaiian" is really Japanese. Leaving your "mainlander" (USA mainland) values behind really means adopting a more Japanese attitude towards things. But anyway, in Kailua there's simply a lot more "white people" around, so if you're one of "them", you'll be happier there. If you're just here for a couple of weeks it doesn't matter, but if you're living here for years, you have to make your peace with what I'm talking about ,and learn to deal with it.
