The primary reason I am not on the Family Guy hate bandwagon, is because it's hatebase have consistently been substantially more embarrassing to associate oneself with, who seem to take murder displayed on the show almost as literal crimes, and scream at characters for acting *mean* Family guy fans at least make good shitposts I can laugh at, without needing me to know anything about the show.
I can’t take Family Guy haters seriously ever again after seeing someone refer to a child on the internet as “The modern Peter Griffin of UA-cam” as if it was the most scathing, disgusting accusation on someone’s character you could make
The reason why I don't like South Park or its fans. Family Guy doesn't try to pretend that it's being witty or that its viewers are somehow superior for enjoying it. But every South Park fan makes it out like the show is some scathing, high-brow critique on society when it's just as trashy as any other adult cartoon out there. South Park seems like they're trying to stand on their soap box all the time.
Family guy might be the only show that is better enjoyed in UA-cam clips than by actually watching full episode. I went through the same moral conundrum after years of watching Family Guy Funny Moments compilations. I started wondering why people hated on the show so much. Then I tried actually watching through a season. Each episode is an eclectic mess. The plot meanders, the characters motivations seem to change every episode. The comedy from the show really is derived from the non sequitur gags that are sprinkled throughout it. In a way, it was ahead of its time. Now, the fast pace style of humor is standard in our digital landscape. People share gifs, memes, tik toks, and UA-cam shorts. Its really no surprise Family Guy memes are evergreen. The show has always been famous for fast paced jokes that get to the punchline quick. As our attention spans shrunk moving into the digital age, the humor of the show aged incredibly well. Really, what keeps the show culturally relevant, is that people can chop the show up into bits and enjoy it in quick little bursts.
I definitely agree. The show is way funnier in chunks than as full episodes like how I watched it on TV back in the day. At one workplace we used to watch UA-cam clips of Family Guy during lunch breaks and it was more enjoyable that way than watching full episodes.
Lowkey I feel like both the Simpsons and family guy should stop being shows, but just have small random shorts, why stick to the network cable tv formula when everyone moved into streaming
The clip from Family Guy where Stewie continuously attempts to get Lois' attention while she's lying in bed, was the very first UA-cam video I was ever shown by my cousin. It quite literally was the beginning of my journey on this website.
What a terrible introduction. Instead of original content, which UA-cam has a ton of and some is really damn good, it's just some more ripped copyrighted content which is the worst part of UA-cam.
South Park's family guy episodes are actually surprisingly even handed with its critism. Cartman (the famously edgy and irrational one) is basically the only character who hates family guy, and they make basically everyone else, at least the main cast of Kyle, Stan and Kenny representing the opinion of "I know it's not highbrow or amazing, but I enjoy it and it makes me laugh". They easily could have portrayed family guy fans as idiots but for how "brutal" those sp episodes are remembered as, it was a lot kinder and fairer than you'd think.
Especially when Howard Stern kinda pushed Seth into shittalking them a bit, I'm surprised the gloves weren't off at that point, but I think they sorta understood it's basically the popcorn of tv and probably knew that Howard kinda eggs people on to be confrontational
I think it was classy that Matt & Trey were able to represent the viewpoint of people that like Family Guy even though they very much did not agree. They've even clarified that they have no problem with the show existing and people enjoying the simple laughs it's able to bring, and I think that having that view of Family Guy helps you to appreciate the show at least a little.
If family guy has a million fans i am one of them. If family guy has one fan i am that one fan. IF family guy has no fans then i am dead. GLORY TO PETORIA
It seems today that all we see is drama slop on UA-cam and controversy on Twitter... But WHERE are those good old fashioned values, on which we used to rely?
I even compare Family Guy to something like the Michael Bay Transformers movies. We feel like it’s cool to jump on the bandwagon to hate Bayformers, but deep down we secretly love them
Family Guy was the founder of modern, nihilistic, media-centric, reference based humor. People were ashamed to admit it, but at this point everyone watches it in some form.
Hot take. I like Family Guy more than South Park. South Park is funny but honestly it has always felt a lot more pretentious and preachy, even during the golden age of South Park, even when many of the stuff they say I agree with.
i don't know if anyone can understand me but all the seasons (4 - 6) from the mid 2000s feel a lot better than the episodes from the seasons that came after the 2010s, i'm not speaking from nostalgia either.. the older episodes just are more memorable to me
That and the heavy amount of toilet humor and crass jokes, yeah you kinda had that in the early seasons of Family Guy but it was more mild and tame but it’s turned up to 11 now
@@JonathanGaetaFunnily enough, both of your comments applies to my feelings of Spongebob for later seasons. It's so... in your face with an assault on the senses with no breaks.
@JonathanGaeta Cmon, poop fart fart toilet humor is fine and I don't think that a show being "tame" makes it good. It's just like... not being funny because it's always at 11 and maybe doesn't have the right format for its humor.
@@JonathanGaeta You should check out either "The Donna Reed Show" or "Leave It to Beaver." But some of that stuff shows bullying between siblings so...trigger warning.
Did I fall into an alternate dimension? This show dominated in 2007-2009. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing it mentioned on UA-cam or going over to a friend's place who had one of those Family Guy calendars. I think it's very hit and miss. I either really like the episode or really dislike it. I get why people like it but it's not always for me and it's a little too reference as well as cut-away heavy at times.
Around Season 8 or so I feel like the public consensus shifted extremely heavily towards the negative in terms of how the show was perceived. The entire arc of Brian’s death was also a pretty big example of that paradigm shift, especially with how Brian’s character deteriorated afterwards. (Though he was already pretty Flanderized before he was even killed off, I think it was just far more apparent after he was brought back)
I feel the Achilles heel of the show is that it dropped developing and focusing on its foundational character relationships in favor of only really focusing on its humor. Compared to a show like American Dad, the Griffin family feel less like a family and more like aggressive personalities without much interaction on a personal level. American Dad may be more experimental and outlandish at times, but it’s focus is on the relationships and dynamics within the smiths. I buy Stan and Francine’s marriage far more than Peter and Lois’ because of how the show focuses on the back and forth of their dynamic and why they both care about each other and fight rather than just using it only as a batting cage for aggressive jokes. It’s no wonder why some of the best episodes of the show are the Brian and Stewie ones because they are the most defined character dynamic so it anchors the jokes with that relationship. Without strong character traits or relationships, the griffins feel more like caricatures and vessels for jokes rather than defined characters aside from dialing up their un likable traits for shock which has far worn it’s welcome. Like with the jack of all trades master of none element, family guy just doesn’t really have a strong foundation for itself anymore outside of its humor and that can only take a long running show so far. I know I’m complaining about the elements that probably made the show distinct, but I feel in the long run, Family Guy kinda didn’t find its major focus or element aside from its wild humor which can be funny. But compared to other shows, it kinda leaves a lot to be desired by comparison. In the short term, it helped the series establish its own identity and sense of humor, but in the long term, it didn’t allow itself a proper structure to maintain itself at least in terms of broader consistency. Say what you will about the Always Sunny crew, even they have more defined dynamics and layers while I feel the Family Guy characters became flatter and only more so as the show went on. Even so, I still appreciate family guy for what it does right and i will always have some affection for it in spite of its flaws. American Dad clears though, sorry.
I completely agree and was waiting for him to talk about this in the video, but I digress because obviously the topic is family guy itself. I will say one thing however, even though I appreciate the humor and episodes of American dad slightly more, there is something about it that it lacks compared to family guy. For example those Brian and Stewie episodes just couldn’t have come from a show like American dad. And I often appreciate the musical elements from family guy far more. The two shows, while similar, definitely have differently defined characters which leads to different scenarios. I argue that the specials from family guy often reach far greater heights than what American dad has.
Part of the reason that Customer of the Week episode is so strong is because of its strong development of Lois as a character, and her relationship with her family. From beginning to end it's so concerned with letting you know who this character is, what's important to her, how she sees her family and the world, and puts her flaws up on display to hilarious effect. I mean just read that paragraph, that's not usually what Family Guy is about, but when it is, it's honestly a really incredible show because it does have amazing, charismatic characters. It's a shame they don't double down on developing them more.
Family Guy is a lot like McDonald's, it's absolutely fantastic when you have it every once in awhile, in small amounts. But if you try to consume it regularly or even just too much in one sitting, it leaves you feeling lethargic, bloated, and feeling bad about yourself because you know it's not ACTUALLY good.

I'm glad someone else remembers that very specific era of the Hulu family guy clips. God knows how many times me and my cousins would watch those on repeat
Love it or hate it, Family Guy is the one universal constant. In a universe fraught with chaos and disorder, Family Guy is one of, if not the only the thing that is unaffected by the ever changing world. When humanity is long gone, and the heat death of the universe has finally come, Family Guy will still be there, broadcasting funny moments to a dead cosmos.
american dad is and has always been a better written show than family guy, the characters actually interact in meaningful ways instead of just "what if peter got a sex change"

Aaron McGruder has stated on multiple occasions, both while creating *The Boondocks* comic strip and during interviews for his show, that *The Simpsons* did not influence his work; instead, he credits *Charlie Brown* as his inspiration.
Family Guy haters are the definition of pretentious. They actually secretly love that it exists, as it's constantly used to prop up their beloved "prestige television" like Simpsons and South Park.
I used to watch Family Guy funny moments on Flipnote for the DSi back in late 2000s/early 2010s, and now all these years later, I watch those same clips while scrolling social media.
Those dvd menus of the family watch TV with spliced clips from the seasons are such a key memory for me..I don't know what that says about my childhood lol
Family Guy hate is one of those things people spout to get easy engagement bait. The easiest way to tell is when they add "American Dad is far better blah blah blah". People love to hate because it contines to remain relevant in ways their favorite animated shows can no longer ever be.
family guy jokes have such a range, its either really good like the greased up deaf guy or its not good at all, the simpsons jokes has much more consistency than family guy
They did up until Season 10, then they started really nosediving in funniness to a point of no return. The newest piece of Simpsons media that made me chuckle was the movie decades ago.
One thing I noticed also, and I can't be the only one to notice this, is that almost every family guy comment section that has Meg involved, whether it be the older or newer, we have whole bunch of kids & manchildren on the spectrum obsessing over this character as if she was "hottest" thing to come out of this show and tries to justify everything she does, whether it be good or bad intentions. They also always try to guilt trip to anyone who finds the meg suffering jokes funny. I fondly remember that everyone hated this character, and I even recalled that one episode where Brian was killed off beliefly, everyone wanted Meg gone, haha.
I didn't know it was still such a hot take to actually like Family Guy, though I guess it isn't surprising. I would consider it one of my personal "best ever" shows. I've re-watched every season from release until now, start to finish a few times over, and it's a show I keep coming back to. Its reality bending, no limits, surreal humour and constant cutaways just keep me constantly engaged. It is almost like the show was made for my very particular set of psychological maladies. I rarely find myself moved emotionally, especially by something such as an episodic TV show that is as seemingly silly as Family Guy, however the episodes Brian & Stewie (SE08, EP17) and Dog Bites Bear (SE16, EP11) were very heartfelt, and the latter may have even got me at the end. These are unexpected deviations from the formula (as with a lot of the Brian and Stewie episodes) that strangely, seem to really work. Anyway this comment is getting long so I'll just end by saying that I'm glad to be living in the timeline that Seth missed that flight.
I recently went through the whole show as well. I experienced a sort of whiplash going through the tonal changes and time progression of the references from the early 2000s to now though.
For me, the episode that I always come back to is Meet the Quagmires. For a Back to the Future parody, there’s surprising heartwarming depth to both Peter’s relationship with Lois and with Brian explored in the episode.
I think the way Robot Chicken dispenses with plot and just goes from one scenario to another is the most efficient method of delivering the kind of cutaway humor of Family Guy. I think it just gets to the point better and is why I think the funny clips compilations for Family Guy are so popular.
i’d compare later family guy to something like a garfield comic strip; something that necessarily isn’t funny in long gigantic bursts, but more so works in short-form bursts. like a 3 panel strip, or, in family guy’s case, clips uploaded onto youtube.
I remember during my internship, I was by far the youngest person there (and the only guy) by a wide margin. somehow we got on the conversation of tv and what we watch on a day-to-day basis, and one of them said she was kinda embarrassed to say that sometimes she’ll just find Family Guy on cable and just watch it before she goes to bed. She just wants something easygoing and self-contained to enjoy after a long day of work and like I completely get it - some of my favorite shows are an hour long or really heavy dramas or action shows, but sometimes Family Guy might just do it better for you in that moment. Sometimes you just like what you like.
The comment at 29:25 is insanely accurate considering there is a trend in the sports edit community where people are linking family guy clips to edits (highlight tapes for you old people) of their favourite athletes. Sometimes I do see them for current events but mostly in the sports community.
I am still of the belief that Family Guy should just be a clipshow online, because the cutaways are funny in isolation, but don't make sense in a narrative-driven episode
One of the reasons why Family Guy is so popular on UA-cam and short-form content sites like TikTok is because Family Guy is genuinely funnier and much better in short clips than in full episodes.
Family Guy is a weird show because you have to learn how to like it. When I first started watching the show I thought it was awful and didn't understand why people liked it. Even at the beginning, I didn't care about the characters and the idea of interrupting the plot for a random comedy skit felt egregious to me. Like it ruins the flow. Basically, I had to compartmentalize all the aspects of the show. Does it interrupt the flow of the plot? Yes. Do I care about these one-dimensional characters? No. Are the jokes funny? Yes. I had to learn to engage with it, not as a TV show that has characters I care about and a plot that flows nicely but rather a comedy factory that shoots out jokes for 22 minutes. I think most people who don't like Family Guy feel like this but it's hard to put into words. Like even if you enjoy watching Family Guy you might not respect it as a show. You respect it as a joke factory. I also think that's why it never won any awards. It's a funny 22-minute experience but it's at its core a broken TV show. It's very nature is corrupt. It can entertain, but it's not a real TV show. It can't make you feel. Despite what the theme song says, it can make you laugh but it will never make you cry. That's why everytime they try it's embarrassing to watch.
13:40 I feel the exact same way, I feel that seasons 1-3 had the best heart and storytelling, but I feel that seasons 4-6 and even some of season 7 had the superior comedy.
Facts. The first 3 seasons are really great, some of the best humor the show has done. Seasons 4-6 are not as strong, but also by no means terrible. They've made some great episodes. It's a shame the way it changed.
@ they had good humor, but it felt kind of corny a lot, and also felt like the show was on a leash, like it wanted to be edgy but it wasn’t allowed to be edgy leading to an unsatisfying middle ground known as “safe edgy”.
The biggest impression I got from the South Park episode about Family Guy was that Trey and Matt were jealous of Family Guy's success. It really seemed like they were attacking it out of bitterness and not to be funny.
And the funny thing is that Seth and the Family Guy cast and crew loved that episode and, even to this day, hold no grudge against Matt and Trey for making fun of Family Guy
They got tired of people saying the love both family guy and South Park (which they found to be of much lower quality and didn’t like being compared to for reasons the episode explains) which is kinda bitter since at the end of the day, what’s wrong with liking both? It’s not like fans are “cheating” on SP for liking another series (regardless of what they think of FG overall).
@@jakedebruin2246 I love South Park but the showrunners seem to have a fragile ego about having to compete with shows they deem inferior, as if it implies being lumped in with them is a statement on South Park's quality itself, when in reality it's just they're all raunchy adult animation that unsurprisingly has a lot of the same audience.
@@jakedebruin2246 Because Matt & Trey think they are above being a simple comedy show and are instead doing very intelligent satire a social commentary. How there you compare them to a show that just wants to be funny.
I remember back in 2013 before they killed Brian people were hating him being a liberal douche mouthpiece for Seth MacFarlane, but when they killed him off and replaced him with Vinny, people cried and said they loved Brian and called Vinny a usurper, with Seth tweeting about caring about your loved ones. Family Guy fans are pretty weird.
I guess you haven't been at the BAD side of social media... Where people would rather fight with strangers rather than enjoy the internet. Good for you, honestly! It's better to avoid it.
@paolo2763 thats so true 😂 I catch myself almost getting swept up in that side of the Internet from time to time but I'm really happy to say my algorithms have 0 political or societal rage bait because I stopped engaging and didn't follow anything that risk exposing me to it lol
25 years ago the social stigma behind liking or disliking Animaniacs was similar. South Park put it perfectly: "There's only two kinds of people. Those who like animaniacs, and those who don't like animaniacs"
Family Guy Doesn't have to be the best show, it has to be an adequate show, which is better than most trash produced now. I appreciate it for what it is and await the next season so i can play it in the background while i do something else.
Its a polarizing show that varies in quality so much you'd think it was a SNL skit. The Star Wars parodies were some of their best alongside the first two seasons. I always preferred American Dad, Futurama, South Park, and The Simpsons though.
17:38 My problem with Modern Family Guy's Cutaways is that they over rely on them way too much with no real set-up anymore and are use for cheap gags instead of actual humor.
I like to think of Family Guy as an "Infinite Chimp Typewriter" for average American humor While the Simpsons can predict future events, Family Guy is doing any and all jokes in existence, one by one, in their format.
Anyone who hates on Family Guy is my foe. I used to watch that show all the time and honestly, it's hilarious, clever, and generally just good. I literally burst out laughing as soon as Peter talks with his stupid voice, and you always know there's gonna be another cutaway to something absurd but interesting. Great show.
Family guy is a Machine Gun Blasting 1500 RPM jokes per minute to see what sticks, that's way there's so much compilations, because there's atempts at everything the jokes comes before any plot (after cancellation). I'm more of a American Dad style, with real plots and creativity where you really see the showrunners really have fun coming up with crazy plots that end up having good joke.
I think when people think of family guy, they think of the modern family guy which is mostly reliant on current trends that come off out of touch and cringe, and the extreme use of cut away gags that used to be pretty funny but just drag on too long now. I was always more of an American Dad
Family Guy like many other long running cartoon series used to be good but gotten bad later seasons. Early seasons of Family Guy was funny and had mellow charm with adult humor insert in it. I like watching the 3 seasons of Family Guy because they're timeless in my opinion. Not only that but the animation feels corporate rigid compare to early seasons.
Season 1 to 3 are amazing in their absurdist and surreal humor. Unmatched. Season 4 to 11 are funny, but a bit too preachy and with shock humor being it’s main crutch. Season 12 to date are just pretty mediocre with the very occasional good episode here or there, but never ever as good as what they used to be.
I prefer Family Guy over south park because it's less pretentious and doesn't try to be original. South park has some good moments when it's over the top, but for the rest of the time it makes you sit through ugly animations and social messages, which come off as being the driving force rather than secondary. Family Guy doesn't focus on pushing an agenda like south park does. Also, the excuse that "the south park animation is supposed to look like shit" doesn't work for the show because of how much it tries to be funny. I'd rather watch a brainrot cartoon like Family Guy ironically than one that insists upon itself.
The hamfisted politics + graphic gore era reminded me of the 4chan thread of someone claiming it was because of some random guy that Seth MacFarlane had around for some reason.
I don't know if other people feel this way, but I myself, along with alot of my friends, gravitated away from Family Guy when that "Edginess" and "Cynicism" started to feel genuinely mean-spirited and nasty, like they just cranked it to it's absolute maximum with all the detailed gore and venom the characters would spit at one another. It just became uncomfortable and gross. I'm glad alot of the whackier stuff from the early seasons (even post revival) are still so cherished though. And much like Spongebob and The Simpsons, there's a reason people still quote those seasons the most.
I don't think it deserves so much hate, i mean like any other show that runs for 20+ seasons it stopped being "good" years ago but honestly it's held on to more of it's dignity than the Simpsons has. Family guy also had the rare opportunity to rebrand it self after it's initial cancelation and though I'm personally in the small camp who think S1-3 are peak and it's not even close, a lot of people DO like the new direction and honestly that format really lends itself well to a long running show.
I swear like 90% of the people who hate on family guy used to be avid fans of the show when it was at its most popular. Then one day it got internet cooties and everyone likes to pretend they never liked it and weren't running around doing Stewie or Brain one liners. Humor changed since it was popular too. It was at a time when random whacky stuff was hilarious, like lone island "im on a boat" or "Candy Mountain".
I feel with Family Guy we’re kind of going backwards, most of the time people warm up to the controversial later installments of a series (Shrek 4, Arkham Knight, Prequel Trilogy, etc), but with Family Guy, it feels like people are slowly but surely cutting out any season aside from 1-3 from the good seasons list.
13:55 I strongly disagree and you're kinda downplaying the appeal of S1-S3 by saying because the main reason why the show got a new leash on life was for how damn memorable and popular those early seasons were and S4-S6 did was double down on what people liked about those seasons given the abundant amount of callbacks throughout. You say that era is Family Guy is where it was able to stand out but to me it just became yet another edgy adult cartoon of that era granted it reached its absolute peak in terms of popularity back then.
As an avid Family Guy fan myself, i disagree on when the shows quality started declining (I think S15 was where the peak of the show ended), but that was a really great analysis. I think you hit the nail on the head with the appeal of this show, and how it paved the way for the Internet's humour.
I saw someone say on Twitter once that family guy works best as short clips than entire episodes, almost like animated comic strips you see in the paper and id have to agree.

South Park is overrated and Matt & Trey are obnoxious

Family Guy is the Limp Bizkit of animation. It's cool to hate, but we all secretly love it.
I even compare Family Guy to something like the Michael Bay Transformers movies. We feel like it’s cool to jump on the bandwagon to hate Bayformers, but deep down we secretly love them
That is an insult to Limp Bizkit
Family Guy was the founder of modern, nihilistic, media-centric, reference based humor. People were ashamed to admit it, but at this point everyone watches it in some form.

Hot take. I like Family Guy more than South Park.
South Park is funny but honestly it has always felt a lot more pretentious and preachy, even during the golden age of South Park, even when many of the stuff they say I agree with.
Family guy is the Nickleback of adult animation. Everyone claims to hate it but they didn't get to season 25 because nobody is watching.
i don't know if anyone can understand me but all the seasons (4 - 6) from the mid 2000s feel a lot better than the episodes from the seasons that came after the 2010s, i'm not speaking from nostalgia either.. the older episodes just are more memorable to me
i agree, it might be nostalgia but mid 2000s family guy was definitely a lot better
The gore is kind of what made me check out completely
(Though he was already pretty Flanderized before he was even killed off, I think it was just far more apparent after he was brought back)
@yosh9192 Absolutely. You're 100% right. Brian's death was so forced and pointless.
Seasons 6 and 7 were even beating the Simpsons in ratings
The show got funnier though
It was a trade off since the humor of seasons 4-6 was top notch
Family Guy is a lot like McDonald's, it's absolutely fantastic when you have it every once in awhile, in small amounts.

I find Family Guy genuinely funny at times.

That is truer than you might think.

25 years ago the social stigma behind liking or disliking Animaniacs was similar.

Family Guy Doesn't have to be the best show, it has to be an adequate show, which is better than most trash produced now.

Its a polarizing show that varies in quality so much you'd think it was a SNL skit. The Star Wars parodies were some of their best alongside the first two seasons. I always preferred American Dad, Futurama, South Park, and The Simpsons though.

20:13 What, the animators were flexing with this sequence
the problem was never with the cutaway gags
we had those going as far as monty pythons' sketches
they're just a lot shorter
Funny because Family Guy’s creator Seth MacFarlane used Monty Python as one of his heavy inspirations
Family Guy is better than all the slow talking script reading ad filled trash that's on UA-cam now days. This isn't saying much but it's something.
like this video?
We are all so lucky, there is a family guy
Why is petah green?
As an avid Family Guy fan myself, i disagree on when the shows quality started declining (I think S15 was where the peak of the show ended), but that was a really great analysis. I think you hit the nail on the head with the appeal of this show, and how it paved the way for the Internet's humour.
