Great interview with a Mans Man. The honesty and emotion are interesting to hear. Tough guys are always going to make the most out of life and live it on their own terms. I never thought about the timing of nascar dying but it sure has changed. Your shows are right to the heart and soul of nascar.
Great interview & he told it like it was with no sugar coating exactly like you would expect someone from the Carolinas to tell it. I'm from the Carolinas as well, they don't hold back down there....
He hit the nail on the head. When sr. Died, nascar died. No more “real drivers” no person that could tell nascar without repercussions. Being involved with baccarat racing. These comments are spot on about nascar and how they operate. Look at the majority of the retired old school drivers. They want nothing to do with nascar. NASCAR has to pay these guys to make appearances.
Spot on! Threw the towel in on NASCAR in 07 when the COT crap of today came in. I look now and then at highlights and just have to laugh, it's a piss poor joke
He's right, nascar used to be talent driven, whatever team could put together a good group of fabricators, mechanics, and pit crew had had a shot at winning, and it was the greatest thing ever, Now nascar builds and supplies everything and tunes the engine, and no talents needed, and isn't worth watching
Another great podcast it's nice to hear from somebody just say how it is and how different it was when he was part of it I enjoy your podcast very much keep up the good work and God bless
21:45 After Dale hit the wall at Daytona he was applying the brakes at the appropriate times sliding down the the banking. Wasn’t instant. Thats all I’ve noticed. Wish Burrell would have elaborated.
Nascar used to be all about competition. When they started talking about it being entertainment and it being about putting on a good show, it lost fans and went downhill.
zero chance dale took his belts loose. He was in a huge battle with Ken and Sterlin for like 20 laps. He didnt have time to adjust belts. His belt broke because it wasnt installed correctly, which was Dale's fault for wanting them that way. But he didnt loosen them. The belt didnt kill him anyways. Refusing to wear the HANS device did.
Mr. Burrells comment about Earnhardt removing safety belt when he doesn’t win has a flaw….he was running 1…2…and 3. A win for Michael Waltrip was a win. His son finished second. In either event I gotta believe he wasn’t just going to jump out of his car and disappear until Monday.
20 years ago a friend of mine close to RCR told me that Dale Sr. Was bad about racing with loosened belts! ( I always thought my friend was full of BS) When I heard this guy’s comments just now I almost fell out of my chair!
i have heard one of his crew members say that after the wreck at talladega he always raced with his belts VERY tight. i don't think he loosened them to be honest. now, he may have had them installed in a way that the manufacturer didn't recommend, but after all the wrecks he had been in, he thought that what he was doing worked.
There is no way, no way in hell Dale took his belts loose in the middle of the race. After the flag I am sure he did..during the race? No way in hell..lol
I think he meant that he loosened them at the end like in the last few laps once he knew he was not probably going to win the race. In all honesty, my thought when it happened was the same, I figured he prolly loosened his belts right at the end cause he wanted to get out of the car & get to victorylane as soon as possible knowing his cars were finishing one & 2. I personally I think the wreck at Dega in 96 was his hardest hit before Daytona in 01...
Wasn't there a yellow just before the wreck, like a lap or two. I believe that it was Bill Simpson that let the cat out of bag about the straps, look it up.
I've always thought, he loosened his belts during the red flag , and either didn't tighten them or just forgot to, he had made his mind up he was going to finish 3rd
Mr. Burrell stated that Earnhardt un loosened belts whenever he didn’t win so he could get out of town and away from everything til Monday IF HE DIDNT WIN. In THIS instance his CAR was battling for the win with his buddy MIKEY driving and his SON was the other leader in front of him. Earnhardt was blocking all behind him sooooo..there’s no way you can tell me that he was going to bail out on Mikey or his sons first Daytona win. No chance

I am a now 60 year old lifetime race fan who had an attempt made on my life by my stepdad when I was 9. A car with a mafia sob whacked me, driving through a stop sign as I walked home from school. Dead on hit at 35-40 mph. Haha, I LIVED but haven’t been the same since. Everything Burrell describes…that’s my life, except I can still smell at 80%. He, like I, experienced Retrograde Amnesia upon being hit, don’t remember the accident. There was a witness however. Anyhow….I RELATE….I SYMPATHAIZE…and I’m PROUD of Mr. Burrell. He, like I, didn’t just phone in the rest of his life. Maaan id love to buy the man lunch…know I’d hit it off good with the man😊
He demonstrated the typical drivers position with the chest perpendicular to the steering wheel.......but Dale sat much lower in the car than most drivers🤔
I listened to this episode Wednesday, in the car, through Spotify. I dont know whst to say about several things this guy said. Im impling anything, because i don't know. But some of the stuff he says is out there.......why would any race driver, running 190mph at Daytona, loosen his belts, purposely?
First time hearing about this possibility. Seems plausible especially given how old school, old schoolers would choose how to live their lives. Freedom has no boundaries, besides cause no harm, injury, or loss and let life live freely.
I was at Daytona in ‘01. At one point of the Dale gave Sterling Marlin the finger. Dale sat lower and back in the car more than anyone that time. So for Dale to get his hand/finger out the front of the window net while green flag racing mind you…. Dale HAD to have his seat belts loose. So it VERY obvious his belts were loose when he hit the wall in turn four. His belts were shown by NASCAR several times. The belts were cut by rescue works as they showed a clean cut NOT frayed. Fast forward to Larry McReynolds on the TV booth saying “drivers reach up and pull them belts tight” as the green flag was ready to come out after the caution. I believe that to this day and Bobby Burrell just said what believed all along.
you never hear about whether the driver is a Ford man or Chevy man - it doesnt matter edit - the way he sat in the car is why he was injured fataly - the seatbelt didnt break
