What sets appart FF6 from other FF games is that while you are trying to stop the end of the world, in FF6 you fail to do so. And then you have to spend the rest of the game picking up the pieces and try to make it whole again. In all the other FF games, you always succeed in saving the world. FF6 is where you fail.
And you. Not many games gives you credit for being part of the story. Definitely one of the best Final Fantasy games in the series. Took me 6 months to beat this game. Awesome from start to finish.
Way back when i first saw Shadow's scene, it hit right in the feels. Find out that the badass ninja-assassin character has this history that torments him and he runs away from, finding out he had a daughter, finding out that daughter was RIGHT THERE all along, then seeing him "stop running" and face his fate there in the tower struck deep. But now as I look at the way the game was set up, with the player choosing who they want to be the main characters, it shows that players were not only participants in the story, but in a way wrote parts of it as well. The sort of open-ended "stop running" and "start again" bits from shadow are just that, open-ended. The game ends there (allowing you to roam free through the world as if you hadn't defeated Kefka yet) without elaborating much on what happens to any of the characters after the final battle, which again leaves an open ending allowing you, the player, to imagine what became of the characters later on. Did Terra return to Mobliz to be with the children whom her heart latched onto, thus allowing her to live on? Or did she go elsewhere seeking the normal life the Empire would have denied her? Did Locke and Celes settle down somewhere? Or do they still continue on adventures to the far reaches of the world? Did Shadow commit suicide as pennance for deserting Baram, or stay in the tower as it crumbled around him as did the life he knew 8 years ago? Or maybe he really did start over, ditching the guise of "Shadow" and returning to society as a new man. Or maybe, just maybe, Shadow died in that tower at the hands of Clyde Arrowny, who returned to his daughter to finally be the father he should have been for the last 8 years. Final Fantasy 6 is a story that had many writers through its time, Squaresoft, Square-Enix, the translators who did their best to bring it to the rest of the world, "AND YOU". Shadow's fate, and that of each and every character, is for you to decide,
On my first playthrough I accidentally let shadow die.. I was quite upset because I really liked his character and I was so touched when I saw his name in this final cutscene and then that dramatic music started playing...
For my first playthrough i didn't know any english. I still managed to finish the game but, until high school, i randomly wanted to know what happened when the timer runs out on the Floating Continent, then Shadow came back and thats how i found out how to keep him for the World of Ruin.
Sadly there will never be another final fantasy as good as this was. sure they can try to tell a story like this one, but it won't really be the same- a huge cast of characters, a well thought out and moving plot, a great soundtrack that is second to none as well as featuring the longest song ever made for a final fantasy game(dancing mad), the longest ending of any square game before or since(over 30 minutes long) a parent and child in the same party (shadow and relm) and much much more. this game literally has it all and then some.
They did try to tell a story just like this one. Amnesiac experiment escapes from the powerful evil group. Joins up with the resistance group. Fights a fellow experiment who tries to destroy the world. FF7 basically ripped off the story from FF6.
THe last part, "and you," is a very special moment. The entire piece is deeply emotional, and that part that recognizes you as a character makes it special.
Relm's theme segueing into Shadow's breaks my heart to pieces everytime. Death of Aeris has nothing on this, Shadow had a reason to live after all, and he never knew. Before anyone says anything, I'm aware of the cut scene between Strago and Shadow, and I really wish it had been left in.
I love the main theme of FFVI: hope. No matter how bad circumstances become, mankind can rebuild. Shadow gets to die as more than an unloved and honor-less mercenary. Terra finally finds a connection strong enough to keep her in the real world. Not to mention Cyan regains his sanity, Locke exchanges parting words with his love, and Celes finds the will to live. This game is among my three favorite games of all time.
I didn't know how to feel about this ending, it was an emotional roller coaster! I found the Figaro brothers part heartwarming, Umaro's part funny, and Gogo's part hilarious, then after that, the feels started :(
The translation to Shadow's portion is better in the GBA port. He says something like, "Baram...I'm tired of running. Come find me, will you?" I find that much more impactful and sad.
God, hearing Relm turn into Shadow, makes me break out in goosebumps, every time. And hearing Celes' theme makes me break out into goosebumps. And mog to umaro. And umaro to gogo. And setzer to edgar/sabin
Shadow was definitely the most memorable event in the ending sending away interceptor and interceptor not wanting to leave his side. Shadow finally came to terms with his past and faced the "music". Very memorable...

6:11 is the best part. After Locke's complicated history with Rachel, he relives that dreaded moment where she fell (only this time with Celes) and this time around, he saves her. And as he pulls her up, his heroic theme music plays. A broken man finally becomes whole again as he truly redeems himself.
Argh, I tear up every time I here this. I really love this ending, it put all of the characters' growth all in one place. The Edgar/Sabin, Locke/Celes and Relm/Shadow bits get me the most.

While I love the remastered, pixel remastered, orchestral remaster and all the modern interpretation of FF6's ending theme, I still prefer the original SNES soundtrack to it. It still holds high value to my ears. Favorite sections are Gau all the way to Shadow in particular Locke and Celes - their storyline tugs at the heartstrings and the music works!
I cast my doubt on that. I feel that the saddest theme is Shadow's one. He is less soothing and more "epic" in a way, but maybe it's for the scene itself... I see it like the theme of the final decision: the one to die.

I cried when Shadow was left behind, he finaly learned to have emotions and care about his friends, but he satyed behind to die. I also believe that he's Relm's dad,so that made it all the more sad
The most amazing game ever made. Inspiring storyline, character development, beautiful music ... I'm a girl, but there's something about these little pixelated characters that emotionally move you, much better than Cloud/Tifa, Squall/Rinoa, Tidus/Yuna, etc.

FF6 is indeed superb, but you're forgetting Chrono Trigger. Though I have a tough time deciding which is better, but yeah. They're both 11/10. And man, the music in both are grand. Everything about both is splendid. Proves you don't need new age high tech graphics for a perfect game. and hey, the characters, and story of 7 were superb too. As emotional as its music is, I can't help but find Clyde Arrowny's suicide in the end to be almost as contrived for shock value as Aerith's death in the next game. Even if his daughter was mature enough without him, he should still be there to catch up with her. He tells Baram that he will stop running, but in committing suicide despite knowing his daughter is alive and well (And possibly even fighting at her side), he is running away from being a dad because he can't get over his guilt.
If y'all like that you'll LOVE this. Here's what someone was able to remake the entire ending piece with a full 40-piece orchestra using modern libraries. It took him half a year. How he was able to enhance the epic parts is incredible. Just give it a chance. With the success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we are one step closer. Seven was good but Six was the first Final fantasy for me. I've been waiting for a remake of it. With what I've seen in ff14 and now FF7R. I rest knowing it's in good hands. It feels like Squaresoft night be back.

A million years ago I saw a PS1 Underground CD interview with Nobuo Uemetsu. To this day, I can't find it on youtube. He explains that part of the reason he wrote such sad and moving music is because his mother was dying while he was writing these songs. Wish I could find that interview...

you know I've noticed that after the SNES alot of companies stopped putting in their credits a thank you to the fans. I dunno to me they just seemed to at least WANT to thank you for taking some time out of your life to play their game which they had made.

I like this song but honestly I'd rather have a full song for each indivudual reprise. Especially with some like Shadows theme and Gogo's theme.

Personally, I'm not a 6 or 7 fanboy. I say they're BOTH the best games ever. They both had a great story, a great villain, great music, and great characters. I love both of them.
@mikethered123 This music still makes me sad,i didn't used to listen to it too closely but when i did it felt like the song was saying:kefka destroyed the world brought misery and suffering,many things ceased to exist but you still did a good job,you saved lives as well as you could and brought peace to the world.

you know I've noticed that after the SNES alot of companies stopped putting in their credits a thank you to the fans.
I dunno to me they just seemed to at least WANT to thank you for taking some time out of your life to play their game which they had made.
Don't beat ff7. The ending will leave you saying WHAAAA..... This is one of if not the best endings there are and I think you will agree.
