War Thunder - In Depth Skinning Tutorial - SDK, N files, BLK

  • In today's video, I will show you guys how to add more detail to your war thunder skins, how to edit the BLK files so that you can change the files and make them work within the game and I will also show you how to get those files from the war thunder SDK.
    The apps I used were:

    Firstly, I love how you're replying to comments for this still!
    I'm about to begin work on a skin for a phantom (similar to the"Cyber Tiger" typhoon) and wanted some advice on how to achieve that same "cyber" look. Similar to a tesselation grid look if you know what I mean.

      It is basically a set of randomised triangles so you can either search online for an image of triangles or you can create your own by adding a few triangles then apply a gradient to each ones as they seem to have gradients on them

      Notepad will do fine they are text files

    Hi I have made a skin but I have problems with the spinner. When the prop is turning it goes back to the original colour, and when it stops it gets my texture. How do you think I can fix this?

      there will be a small strip in skin files that looks like a blurred or spinning prop. it iwll be in the file somewhere....just place coloured dots on the things you think it is then go in game and see if the dot appears on the spinning prop if not change the location of the dots,,,rinse and repeat

    The n files you kinda messed up. Go to channels instead of layers and you can see that the details are layered in color profiles. If you wanted to redo all the rivets you would have to go to green and color over all the existing rivets on that layer and drop your own river layer into that channel. Otherwise your lighting won’t match your paint.

      Yeah I made this years ago when I knew nothing. Now I would use nvidia textures tools to convert and black white and grey image of all the panels to a heightmap then import tot he channels on the N file

      Alpha layer controls the 3d aspect of it if you will the colours control the shine of it like matte, metal, gloss or chrome

    So I need to get the blk files itself, but the tanks I need are locked so I can't view them.

      To get the BLK file I just download a skin of the vehicle from WT live and use that blk or create your own using the file names. If you go the first option then don't use any of their skin files unless you ask as it is their work

    I hope you can help me if you are still replying, but I wanted to know how to download .blk skins to war thu8nder, because it seems that everytime I do it the normal way (extract files, copy, place in user skins folder) it shows up that its there but the vehicle doesn't change

    I've been reading the comments and it seems like you'd do things differently. Do you think the video is still a good resource? I want to get into skinning but all the tutorials seem to be years old.
    I don't need a guide to hold my hand, i just need to know what everything does :p

      @@KINGRORA yey, I wanna make the skin for the mi24a from black ops 1 "payback" mission, i tried today but was like a disaster follow all the uv maps, so i hope there is a less hard way to make it.
      Also I really like your 2 tutorial on skins, there aren't many of them and they usually aren't very clear. I really want know how poeple made marketplace quality skins...

    hey mister, quick question. I'm hoping to make a skin for an aircraft that I currently do not own in game. I managed to grab the skin and the lighting files from the SDK, however, I'm not sure where to grab the .BLK file. Do I have to make one from scratch?

      I just copy the blk from another skin and then just change the names from the original to the new thing

    do all colors have an effect on n.tga files? could you tell me what they are?

      Yes each colour will do a certain thing. It's to do with the RGB channels. You can fine tune what each does by adding or removing more or less of these colors. I think blue is how metallic something is and red is how rough something is but don't quote me on that. I have a bunch of hex codes saved that assign to different materials.... join the discord or message me there and I'll send you example files

    Hi! Is there a better way to locate textures? The trial and error method takes ages. Does the war thunder CDK have some kind of locating tool?

      By textures i mean the different parts of an airplane in a texture file.

      @@KINGRORA you say that you can search for every texture in a texture file? For example searching for the texture of the inside of the exhaust pipe in the tga file without painting over random textures and seeing what area of the plane is affected until you find the exhaust texture.

      Another way of asking is: How do you find where every part of the plane is mapped in the tga texture file.

      Well no that is trial and error unless you have 3d software where can paint directly to the 3d model... if im not sure what something is I will place a bright coloured dot and see where it appears

    Hold up, so how do you mask the part of the aircraft?????????? It is hard as there is some excess portions

      There are a few ways some are more accurate and some are more lazy but you can achieve a similar result with all......I like to create a filder for that section then add a mask to that with the little button at the bottom its like a square with a circle in it....once clicked the folder will have a white square next to it....now anything on that layer that is black will not be seen and anything that is white will be seen

    How do you make the riveting with the hollow circles on gimp? When I use the circel tool on gimp its not a clean circle like in this video.

    I have an question. You know, there is same vehicles but different camouflage and nations. How can I convert them to other nation's same vehicles? For example, custom Mig-17 skins to Mig-17AS and F-5.

      They have to be the exact same model so a mig 17 won't work properly on shenyang as the airbrake is a different shape and it also has an afterburner
      But to transfer skins you need to grab the blk of the plane you want then change the contents of it to match the files in your skin folder, it isnt easy to explain in a message

    Very interesting. But how do you 'import' the N files into the BLK files? I mean, do you put supplementary lines?

    Do you know where all the decals are located? I've found some in "decals" under #gameRes but it doesn't contain all of them.

      @@KINGRORA I've looked around and I've failed to retrieve it from the internet or information on how to access it in the asset viewer. The one I'm looking for is the "Speedy snail" decal in the Special section in game (the one with a snail on it that says Get faster)

      @@ovenoid1168 no dude i don't think you can as i believe they are server-side meaning they are not actually stored in the game which is why gaijin can add new ones without updating the game
