I am not going to watch this video so that I can continue to complain about how I don't understand how it works on your other videos. I hope you understand.
I've seen a tone of WT radar guides from CC's this is definitely among the best for a thorough breakdown when new to radar sets - great visual aids, straight to the point and easy to understand. Great job Defyn, and big thanks to Jaek too 👍
One thing about MTI: usually the range in which the MTI can see is a bit over half of the range in which the normal search mode can see, and this applies both for searching and tracking
Having had to just fight with a Lvl 15 F4S player who didn't know what countermeasures are or how to use radar, I am very glad you and Jaek have made this. At this point Gaijin should just link to these videos and Jaek's video on missiles for the top tier guide.
Although I only fly stuff that has a proper engine (meaning propeller) and thus am not bothered with radar, I very much appreciate your continuous effort to provide helpful guidance to the WT player-base.
I also highly recommend setting up controlls for moving around the dish manualy. I use controll as a combo key. So while I use WASD normaly for flying, when I hold Controll I controll the radar with WASD instead. It's especialy handy at top tier since you can stay at tree top level safe from radar missiles and aim the radar with Controll+WASD at enemys instead of having to point my nose up.
so I've been here watching your gameplay, guides, and your tremendous effort into making us better at the game by showing how skilful, funny and charismatic you are when its come to warthunder air RB, I came here when i was about rank 3 because i felt like i need to get better at the game, now im at top tier and i came across this video but felt like its time going to come some day, thank you for your effort, time and amazing gameplay.
Amazing Guide! One thing that I hoped to see was mentioning that PDV (HDN) and MTI do not support/don't work with IFF. I, as a sim player, get a bit annoyed when I get missiled by a tm8 and then hear that I was marked as a enemy. I'm sure a few viewers here play sim battles and might not know about it yet, or they are just starting to play sim battles in F-4S and end up killing tm8s (to be fair, I did so too in the mig-23). Nonetheless, it is a very helpful and high quality guide :D!
Small note, if you want to hit your Fox 1s much more consistently, if chaffed, DON'T BREAK AND RE-ACQUIRE LOCK! If your missile has CW or Continuous Wave guidance, it will still steer towards the original target you launched on as long as the radar illuminates it even a little, if you break and try to lock the enemy aircraft again, the missile will fly blind for a while and may not find the target again, leading to it self destructing. So, when chaffed, just let the radar be, if the missile is already on short final into your enemy's cockpit, it'll find it's way there even if the box isn't on tha plane!

Absolutely 10/10 guide, very well explained. Lovef to see this collab! The only small thing i could nitpick is that some IRST systems, like the mig29´s, can actually show the range and closure rate of the locked target.

Very good guide! Sadly, i did not learn anything from it, but for a new player i think it is the most in depth guide, that will be much of a help. Keep it up, while i show this to few of my friends, which are approaching their first radar jets.
Finaly a useful guide video from you bro. The rest of your guide videos are "heres how to fly a jet! There's a 262 were gunna go up and he stalls and now we click him out of the sky" this is actually a guide is what im sayin so thx for that
Thanks for all that - REALLY helpful (or will be when i finally get in to higher tiers). Other tutorials have focused on the technology whereas your video focused on the usage, both are good to know but yours are much more useful. Your video brought to my mind at least three things things that Gaijin still needs to do. The first is to add radio direction finding or RDF on certain older aircraft. This wasn't a big thing in combat and was designed mainly to help friendly aircraft navigate in bad weather to an airfield or carrier but I could see this being used in game whenever an enemy aircraft used chat to give a quick clue as to which direction they a rein reference to the player, very handy in late game battles where there are only a few enemy left. The second would be to overhaul the gunsight system to show the differences between fixed, gyrostabilised and radar directed gunsights. Gyrostabilised sights should move the pipper in 3rd person mode away from the direction of turn based on g-pull while radar gunsights would do the same but also show a simplified form of the arcade style lead indicator. One of the big advantages of the F-86 over the MiG-15 in Korea was having radar gunsights yet as you point out this is nearly useless in game. The last big change would be to add a DCS-style "Jester" or guy in back function for multi-seat aircraft, including all bombers. This would be a series of audible clues as to enemies spotted, missile launches, incoming gunfire and so on and could like radar be set to more or less detail - having half a dozen gunners on your B-17 call a passing FW-190 might be overload but having just the left and right waist gunners call out as he passed would be very useful. It may be crew skill based so more experienced crews give shorter, more accurate and more relevant shout outs. While I am dreaming there is one last bonus change I would like and that would be a GCI function for certain matches that had it for one or both sides. The function would be initiated by a bound keystroke and would give the bearing range and altitude (BRA) info of the last known location of the nearest enemy to the player. This would replace the current battlefield radar minimap in RB and would IMO be a lot more useful then a field of cluttered red and blue markers.
For those who want 3 steps simple guide 1. Press "Radar/IRST beyond/within visual range combat" and wait to get a square around your target 2. Press "weapon lock (air to air)" and wait for double red circle to apear 3.Press "Fire air to air missile" and track it 4.????? 5. Profit It took me a while to understand that it's easier than people make it to be . Yes some radar modes are more efficient at higher or lower altitude but in basic you need 3 buttons
Honestly an amazing video, I've been using radars ever since Fox 1's have been added and thought I had it all figured out but it turns out I had a lot of misconceptions about what the things actually mean, for example I thought the square display was a C scope and not just the same thing as conical and the little dot with the line once you lock someone was the direction the plane was traveling not its direction relative to you. Super helpful guide Defyn thank you so much for taking the time to explain all this, especially with how key radar is to top tier its dumb that Gaijin leaves players to figure everything out on their own. One question I do have, whenever I'm using TWS on my Mirage 2000 or MiG-29, using the switch target button to cycle through the TWS targets will switch my radar to ACM for a few seconds before actually changing the TWS lock. I've fiddled around with my controls and there doesn't seem to be a conflict in buttons between them, do you know what could possibly be causing this?
Playing all the mirage 2000s, I don’t think I have experienced this. Haven’t played them for a few days, but maybe there’s a bit of delay, and the default state is ACM ? However, I can assure you that during the time you switch to and from TWS, it does NOT lock anything, so it’s not really doing ACM, maybe it’s just visual
You really ought to be using the moving box to select TWS targets over cycling through them all anyway. You gotta go change it in the control settings.

It's a great summary overall. I still would love to see a radar section when you do a video on each jet. Say you're doing a video on the Mig 29 and how to fly it, while you're talking about the missiles it has include the best way to utilize them (which radar modes you switch between and when/why.)
I personally prefer keeping cyclic switching of targets, but not keeping constant radar elevation. This allows you to "aim" the radar/IRST off-axis without needing to manouvre your nose (for example: useful if you want to keep flying in a certain direction and search for targets; useful in a slow speed fight so that you can slave IR missiles to IRST-locked targets off the boresight). Keeping cyclic switching ensures that you don't need to also know the correct range when selecting a target to lock, thus reducing the dimensions you need to search for targets in from 3 to 2. It also makes the keybinds and workload more manageable.
You can actually move it left and right without disabling constant elevation of radar antenna, the keybinds still work (at least for me), but that got cut from the video because its not super useful and explaining it would just make things more confusing
@@jaek_898 Oh, I didn't know you could aim it without disabling constant elevation. I can understand cutting it because it is quite confusing and only slightly useful. Perhaps that's a topic for the advanced radar guide 😉
@@anonimous_user7318 I'm actually working on a "questionably useful radar facts" video right now for stuff like that, hopefully i can have it out by tomorrow
Sadly, with constant elevation turned off, radar dish keeps alignment with the horizon, instead plane which caused confusion and reee on more than one occasion. Also radar box could be more visible for managing that (using auxiliary mouse button to enable axis and then WSAD to move dish, as sort-of-HOTAS mode).
Thank You Sir, Im Going to buy a Premium either the Mig-23ML or the F-4S Phantom 2 because of this I have all the Knowledge how the radar and radar missiles work.
Wish they'd give the rangefinding radars some gunsight capability. Really would be a huge help with some of the non-missile jets that get uptiered all the time. Like the Chinese F-86. Absolute nightmare trying to hit MiG-21s and F-104s with just the Mark I eyeball before they accelerate away out of range.
I agree, would be nice to implement some type of functionality for them into rb apart from the occasional missile slaving on the higher end rangefinder sets. It wouldn't even be that hard, as its just a simpler version of the existing pipper we have in rb currently - its just an overlaid range adjusted gyro sight, would give you a nice reference point to aim from. Hopefully we get the static crosshair overlaid back into all pipers and any future gyro sights as not having them makes it weird to aim sometimes and they are still present within the hud while using the pipper from within the cockit anyway so is realistic to have both. Would even be nice to add the standard gyro to all aircraft which have normal gyro sights including props too.
One small thing I've noticed about MTI mode in the Mig-23 is that its not just above 1800m above sea level when it switches to LD, but rather dependent on the ground altitude. No idea what the exact number is but its probably somewhere around 1700m-1800m when it switches to LD Edit for clarification: basically if you're flying 3000m above sea level on the hud, but only 200m above a mountain range it will still be in MTI mode

@jaek_898 but with regular PD non-V you do still have IFF
This was very helpful Defyn thanks a lot

Thank god for this , i just unlocked the mig 23 mld
Great video! This summer sale got 2 packs with your code and well deserved.
All you really need to know is that the missile knows where it is at all times
...Because it knows where it *isn't* 😄
Thanks
this is an awesome video, thank you so much for explaining all this. I recently go really into Air RB and this was super helpful
Best guide out there

One small thing I've noticed about MTI mode in the Mig-23 is that its not just above 1800m above sea level when it switches to LD, but rather dependent on the ground altitude. No idea what the exact number is but its probably somewhere around 1700m-1800m when it switches to LD
Edit for clarification: basically if you're flying 3000m above sea level on the hud, but only 200m above a mountain range it will still be in MTI mode
It is exactly 1800m and uses the radar altimeter
