  • Let's discuss Love Never Dies! Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it's the sequel to Phantom of the Opera and was shown for free on UA-cam the other week as part of his 'The Shows Must Go On' scheme, which got me thinking and inspired this video! I'm going to talk about the styles of both shows, the music, and character changes between the shows.
What do you think about Love Never Dies?
Let me know if you want me to make more videos discussing other elements of this show, as I feel I barely skimmed the surface, or if you want me to discuss any other musicals!

I appreciate your mini rant about Raoul. To be honest I never liked him and got quite toxic potential from him right from his introduction in PotO.
I agree that their relationship would be super strained, in no small part because of the stress with Phantom, but also because they always seemed to connect more through memories of their shared childhood than on any present-day emotional basis.
Christine was far to vulnerable and confused to be in any relationship in PotO. She is incredibly emotionally fragile and therefore follows both Raoul and Phantom blindly, something Phantom is aware of and very clearly uses to his advantage (‘Wandering Child’ after ‘Wishing You…’ is a super prominent example of that). Raoul takes advantage of this in his own way, not hesitating to step in and play the hero, although I don’t think he is aware that what he is doing is taking advantage of vulnerability.
Basically, their relationship was fragile from the start. Seeing them 10 years later in LND, it is really interesting how Christine seems to have grown as an individual (likely the responsibility of caring for a child and managing a drunk, gambling husband). I didn’t even think that Raoul’s toxic behaviour could stem from his guilt at not being able to provide as he would like. The almost role reversal in their relationship (him feeling the hero in PotO to her basically holding the fam together) destroys what was the only real foundation of their relationship.
Yes, they love each other, but I don’t think ever in a romantic way. They are children who grew up and struggled together, then survived trauma as young adults at the opera at the hands of the Phantom. They care deeply about one another, but marriage tried to force their relationship to be something different than it ever would organically be.
That being said, I don’t think Christine should be with the Phantom either. Honestly, seeing him in LND makes me think he could be a pretty good father, but his relationship with Christine would never have been anything close to a healthy one.
I know that in the time period females didn’t have too much freedom, especially with career and relationships, but frankly Christine could have done better for herself than either of the men here. It was nice to see her grow from such a fragile young adult to quite a mature woman.

Haha don't worry, It's like me with planning this - I got on such a roll, if I had gone into everything I could about the show the video would have been hours long! (And I think my reply might be equally as long as yours too 😅)
Really love your thoughts on their relationship. I got so caught up in Raoul's behaviour and didn't even think about how they constantly bring up the past - his final letter to her even refers back to her being Little Lottie, now making me think maybe when he talks of the man he was, he just wants to be the boy who ran into the sea to fetch her scarf for her and bring back that dynamic, which as you say is a completely different kind of relationship!
Yes really loved how Christine had grown, and also that we got to see her having actual relationships and proper interactions with people other than the Phantom and Raoul! Helped as it was aided by character growth from others too - like Meg no longer being just the stereotypical enthusiastic best friend. But Christine and Gustave is the most precious thing ever and I'm so glad we got to see their dynamic!
I think I like Christine and the Phantom together because that's how the show seems designed to make us feel. As soon as you step back and look at the facts I'm like 'absolutely no way', but when you just get lost in the show I can't help but want them together :/
Definitely agree Christine could have done better though, not sure she would have been ready for it mentally by the point of LND (just considering the events of Phantom and how they both did manipulate her vulnerability, and she had had literally no exposure to a healthy relationship before so wouldn't know one if it hit her in the face - although if LND had taken another direction I could see her potentially overcoming some of those things), and especially because of how Gustave ties her to them, but definitely agreed would have liked her to do better! She did not deserve the ending she got!

I came here thinking I was going to enter a battle 🥊🥊 but I have left plesently surprised with how much I've agreed with you 😊
And I really dont understand how people who love POTO think the LND songs are rubbish. EXCUSE ME?? Did you even listen to it??!! Also I'm not a Ben Lewis fan so I didn't particularly care for the Australian show. But I do find myself listening to the West End cast album of LND even more than Phantom... So that's saying something because Phantom is my favorite show 😅

Haha yay! Yeah exactly - like I know I said it briefly in the video but I don't think it can be said enough - imo Til I Hear You Sing is possibly one of the best songs ALW has ever written and Ramin Karimloo sings it like no one else, and how can you think music in a show is awful when you have THAT? Like HOW?! Haha yeah that really is a testament to it! So much amazing talent on that cast recording 😍

ok im super late and only finding this video now but one thing i thought of during your mini raoul-bash is how much raoul doesn’t know about the phantom... christine has only really told him bits and pieces and not truly explained anything, the way i’ve seen it is that rather than raoul wanting to expose their engagement despite the fact that there’s a murderer after her, raoul is confused about why they have to keep it secret. idk. he still wants christine to go on stage as bait but... the audience knows a lot more than he does about what’s at stake until the end when it’s explained to him more. still agree with a lot of what you’ve said! sorry for this super long raoul comment lol

That's a really good point I hadn't thought of! Although saying that - Raoul does know that the Phantom has been blackmailing and murdering many people so I don't know how much more he needs to know haha, but I do definitely agree that he isn't anywhere near as clued in or understanding as the audience, which definitely is a factor in him coming off in that way!
