Thank you for your explanation, professor. I've just one question. Why is the division defined between "when Robert finally hung up, Bill went downstairs" and "finding Mary on the couch" instead of "when Robert finally hung up" and "Bill went downstairs finding Mary on the couch"?

"The cat sat on the mat". Isn't "on the mat" a prepositional phrase?? What is the difference between a clause and a prepositional phrase?
