Professor, I am enjoying your lessons, but I have a question here. In the sentence 'A cat sat on the mat' isn't 'on the mat' a prepositional phrase with an adverbial function, rather than a direct object? (Yes, the verb 'sat' can be transitive, but in this sentence it appears to be intransitive.) If the sentence was 'The cat scratched the mat', then I would agree the object is 'the mat' because the verb is now transitive.
