Brilliant scoring by young Mendelssohn; dividing the 1st and 2nd violins into 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th violins in some places, and the viola section into 1st and 2nd violas likewise, and in some places taking care to write out a separate double base (Kontrabase) section from the violoncellos at variance with the old 18th century practice of having the bases presumably imbedded in the 'cello section at an octave lower. And even more importantly young Mendelssohn has a sense of rhythm and melody not always shining through as strongly in his older (middle aged) works.

The Andante is so lovely. Mendelssohn splits the violin 1, violin 2, viola, and cello sections into two bodies, so they play as a string octet in some places. Less is more. He starts the movement with just Violin 1, Violin 2. Then another extensive section with Viola, Cello. Only at the end of the movement does he play all of them together. Wonderfully sweet. It's what I remember most vividly from having played it 45 years ago! Thanks for posting this.

One could easily mistake the opening of the second movement for Mozart honestly. So sublime and celestial.

I must've been transported to another planet for a while to have missed these string symphonies. They're marvelous. I have some catching up to do.

Much of Mendelssohn’s symphonies were written for strings. They normally have three movements, although the7th, 8th and 9th have four, while the 10th and 13th only one and 11th five. Usually the four movements are, as in this ninth symphony, Grave-Allegro, Andante, Scherzo, which replaces the Menuetto. Here and whose meaning in Italian means “joke”, since it should be interpreted with greater grace. Its duration is longer then the Menuetto. It is worth mentioning that this movement has nothing to do with the Scherzo that appears in some Monteverdi madrigals designated as “musical scherzi”. The work ends in an Allegro Vivace. This ninth symphony was composed in 1823 in the middle of the Romantic period.
The almost sad Grave at beginning is followed by a magnificent Allegro with great vivacity and grace. It continues with a slower Andante full of delicacy and space for reflection, which delight us for its musical harmony. Scherzo is, as I already mentioned, a movement, in this case alternating more lively moments with calmer ones making us relive more joyful times for others more serene, as our real life is. These sensations could only be transmitted by an extraordinary composer like Mendelssohn, translating the human feeling into music. The masterpiece ends with one Allegro Vivace, as if to give us encouragement for the less good circumstances that we will eventually have to face.
The music is sublime and the interpretation and direction superb.
    Romantic period.

Some of the orchestration and harmonic decisions here show a bit more adventurousness in the young Mendelssohn. Starting in minor (ok, he did that in the 8th one too), having the second movement in E Major and the last one (mostly) on the tonic minor, and splitting up the strings more than the 'usual'.
It's interesting to see how he developed while writing these pieces.
