It isn't made in China anymore so that will account for a lot of that, along with demand of course. And it's still way cheaper than the garberg. As I've got 2 garbergs that I got before I got one of these (first the stainless then the carbon) 'IMO' this is the better knife, and came with a much better edge. So yes it's a few quid more now, but I was happy to pay that knowing it wasn't made in China anymore. Nothing against the Chinese. But I'm not into patronising basically slave labour.
So did you tried it? Making your first DIY Leirikyrpä, I demand a picture of it! I totally dropped from my sofa laughting loud when I saw that paper :D Greetings from finland!
I ordered one of these based on your review. Shipping from Finland only took about a week, and the quality of the knife and sheath are far greater than I expected for the price. Thanks for the recommendation!
It is still on sale at the varusteleka.com. That is a Finnish webshop, the one that originally ordered the knife into production under their own brand "Terävä". Actual manufactor is Laurin Metalli Oy, very traditional "small" workshop since 1918, mainly focused on knives (puukot) in upper 3/4 Finland, also known as Pohjanmaa. Pohjanmaa has taditionally been the puukko area of manufacturing, most of the known brands come from that area of Finland. Best knives in the world, allthough Mora in neighboring Sweden is also very very good indeed:)
They are definitely worth the money, I got mine last April, took almost two weeks like it said but got it 5 days early, been impressed with it ever since, mine is 140mm, tough as hell an easy to sharpen when you get your angle right, hair popping sharp.
Knives in Finland are usually measured person by person. What I have been taught is that a knife (to be a normal "use it to everything" -campknife or hikingknife) should not be longer than the width or you palm + 1 cm (~1/3 inc). That is also why there is normally a womensknife and a mansknife. They very lenghtwise a bit, so it is more ergonomic for the user. Of course then there is also other lenghts of knife for different purposes and I myself own quite many different size knives as well. Luckily everyone in our family is a bit knifecrazy :D
Great video 👍🏻, I just ordered 2 of these 110 as well as the 140 along with some other bushcraft outdoor gear from the Finnish store and man , you're right about their prices , good deals on a lot of great products ! Looking forward to receiving my knives and other gear ! Thanks for the review 👍🏻🇺🇸✌🏻️
I just received the 110. Outstanding shipping. Ordered on a Thursday evening and had it in hand on Monday! I had been vacillating between this and the Garburg. I have not had it out in the wild yet so all I've done is a couple of try sticks. Suffice to say I'm very happy with it and am very pleased with this tool.
I received my knife this afternoon. The hype is real. This is my EDC blade. This well made and I can shave with it out of the box. I was only able to the knife first, but I will be getting the sheath. I hope they are still not on strike. I found that out. This knife does everything. The best knife hands down. Kudos to Varusteleka. Bad Ass👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘
Great review. Got the 110 and it’s everything Luke said. Had to wait a bit for it to come back into stock, but very happy. Prices are a touch higher in late March 2024 (guess what’s normal)
Ordered several times from our Finnish friends. They do have a great sense of humor in their descriptions, and their shipping to the US is around $10. I can't get things shipped from either coast to the Midwest for that. It really is unbelievable, but I like it. Merry Christmas to everyone.
Just to let you know. This was the first video I ever saw on this knife and I actually bought this knife based off this video when it came out. I absolutely love this knife. Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother ⚔️
johannes grondah while jaeger means hunter, in Finnish it has different meaning, that is an infantryman. Literal translation would be more like light infantryman knife.
Unfortunately, I suffer from a disease called TMM (Too Many Moras), so I will not be getting the Jaakari. I have dealt with Varusteleka before, and they were great.
Thanks for this interesting review. I have the 140 MM bladed version, and have just sent for the same but in stainless steel. I have been absolutely delighted with my knife. I am a great fan of Scandinavian knives, having bought my first, a "Marttiini Lynx", in 1966. It served me well for decades, until somebody stole it. Conditions where I live, Scotland, are similar to Scandinavia (it is not far away) and what works well there, does so here. i have bought other things from "Varusteleka", a jacket, hats and fine leather belt. Quality alway excellent, service first class. What an outrageous sense of humour! I love it.
I like the sound of the channel. Positive, and practical. Keep on the good work. This thing is soo finish. Make a traditional knife that is a: cost effective b: reliable c:practical. Make it 100% functional, don't give a dime for decoration. A machine. And then name it what? Aurora? Stardust? Galaxy? Destroyer? No! Name it "sharp hunter knife". I love it.
Wow super review was instant in love! I live near Finland so just ordered one! Unbelievable €85 for the 110 with leather sheath!! Amazing knive amazing history amazing price. Thanks!
this is a tool, not a fancy gadget, an excellent product with lots of tradition, prime budget variant for the Finnish army. With my Mora`s and Helle`s absolutely unbeatable!
Purchased the 140 in carbon steel. Looks like I got in quick enough since it is now sold out again. You weren't kidding about them going fast. Thank you for what you do. It motivates me to get out there. I tend to get lazy with the usual 9 to 5 grind. Once in the woods, I turn into a different person. The trees and rocks seem to energize me. It sounds corny but it really is true.
That is a fantastic knife. Just ordered two more of them (23.12.2016) to give them as presents to friends of me. I like your easy and funny stile in this review. Marry christmas and a happy new year to all of us, cheers.
Its certainly up there with the best, when price is considered. Which it should be, imo. Peltonen M95 / M07 is another solid and very similar option, also available from Varusteleka.
have heard experts say the best knives in the world come from Lappland. saw a nice documentary on it too. The traditional authentic ones are mindblowing pieces of art and of course craftmanship. Also: i just ordered mine :D
Thank you Luke!! I am so happy with it man. A very serious, brilliantly "basic" knife, it feels and lies absolutely perfect in my hand, love the grip.My mom said its rather heavy but what does she know, honestly for me its just right and even on the light side, in total its like its not there but only very subtly, like part of the hand! So mean!! cant wait to use it. Now I have much bigger knives but my brother said "you could kill a bear with that " to my 110 - hes probably right :D The sheath is gorgeous and so practical as well. What a steal. Happy new year and Take care
I just ordered the knife! But I got the 140. I hope I'm not sorry. But I looked at it like a survival knife. I have a martini timberjack I also like better than mora! It just has this hand guard on it and seems Slightly more substantial. So I got that its great. But I wanted to kick it up a notch! Even though I'm just a girl and should have even got smaller than the 110. But ya know my area not so safe. Thats mostly why I wanted the big one and I saw a Russian on UA-cam break a ka bar. Gosh! Geez! That was sad! So far no one has broken this one! Knock on I'm mean cut on wood! So yeah!!!!!!! I can't wait to get it. Rock on Luke!
Something about how this knife is made seems to have changed since this video was posted. I have handled six or seven examples of this knife in the past year or so, and every one of them has a 45 degree bevel on the spine. It will strike a ferro rod, but only with a good deal of effort and a touch of finesse. I will be squaring mine up soon, because even my old Schrade 3-blade stockman makes better sparks than this knife does. That said, I love the knife in every other aspect and bought it after trying Moras, Jokers, and even an ESEE-3.
Only bad thing so far is I am still waiting for mine to show up. Ordered a carbon and a SS 140 and its been almost a month. So all I can do is drool over the reviews that others have done! Thanks though! You make me spend a lot of $$$$$$$$$$ with all of your reviews!
The thing that really stands out to me about this knife is that it's exactly what it should be; it's rough, tough, it's not flashy. It's a tool. It's meant to be used. - Luke
One really popular knife from Finland is Enzo (sold by brisa). They have blades, kits and fully assembled knifes in my shapes and lenghts. Check it out if you're interested. P.s. Not affiliated by the company, just like the blades :)
it's nice to see bigger bushcraft UA-camrs doing reviews of Terävä knives that aren't the Skrama. The Skrama and this puuko are my go-to knives. They're both incredible. if you're looking for a chopper look at the Skrama. it's the best chopper I've ever used. better than the ESEE Junglas.
I love this knife especially the 140 just a bit more length for me, gonna really look at getting one after the holidays LOL to broke even for this awesome deal of a price. I like this more than the Mora Garburg and the price is crazy better than the Mora for a much better sheath and grip.
In the northern parts of Finland traditionally the handle is often made from raindeer bone. Receiving a puukko is a kind of coming-of-age tradition in Finland
Finnish army reserve officer school awards the passing students with a handmade decorated puukoknife with the students name carved into the blade. True story ;)
***** Sure thing buddy. Sweden was such a mighty military force that the soviets wouldn't have dared to invade them... Or was it because finns held those communist fucks off of the swedes backs?
I wish I would have sen this before I bought my new Schrade and Mora knives. Gotta figure a way to make this purchase and not seem knife obsessed to my family.
Great knife, I’ve used it and abused it more than 20 years. Nowadays however, I prefer jääkäripuukko 140. Does almost all the same tasks as sissipuukko, but is more versatile (meaning, it’s more of a carving knife whereas M95 is more of a chopping knife). Both are great knives though and you can’t go wrong with either one of them, depending on personal preference of course.
Never got around to reviewing mine, but I was able to get one after signing up for email notification. Like you said they sell fast and show up randomly. Get on the email list to be first notified everyone!
Just ordered mine! I spent a week here at Pigeon Forge.. spent a few days at Smokey Mountain Knife Works and checked out the TOPS BoB, ESEE 4/5/6 and 4hm, 6hm, Benchcraft Bushcraft, Mora Garberg (All sub 120 btw) and settled on the Garberg , I saw your video and ordered a Puukko instead.. SMKW by the way has better prices than any online website. especially ESEE and TOPS. But not Condor/Mora. Well after much debating I ordered one of these Puukko 110's to replace my Condor Bushlore. I might still go back and pick up a Becker 16 with the money I saved.
Your the second person I've seen an heard of their funny package where you have to carve a you know what out of wood, lol,I find it funny too, kinda wished I had opted for the total package with birch wood, but I'm pleased with what I got,you also get options for right or lefthand carry sheath when ordering too,I like that.
thanks! dec 22nd was my birthday and u reminded me to go check the website to see if there was stock by posting this video been waiting forever finally got one! who knows might not have seen it on my email before they were sold out again.. 30 when i first looked and 27 now. fly off the shelf like hotcakes lol.
Swedes make the best steel and Finns make the best bushcraft knives.Americans make the best hunting, combat, survival knives and the Japanese make the best Chefs knives. End of story
That's an absolute bargain for $55, I have a slightly cheaper but very similar scandi, a Bahco 2449 'Wrecking Knife', it's got a plastic sheath, but generally can be bought for about £20 (sorry, I'm a Limey) . Mine stays near my stove for turning kindling into feather sticks for fire lighting. Very similar blade geometry and measurements, so I can understand why you love yours, especially in that sheath.
Nice jacket. I've got a marmot bag I've been sleeping in for about 5 years everyday. It has klear K tape holding some stitching together and I love it. Funny thing is I'm not homeless, I'm just crazy like that :)
Luke, My Traditional Puukku is the Stromeng Bhuku STAK Puukku and my Modern Puukku is my Cold Steel SISU it's a close copy of Tapio Wirkkala Puukku, But in the San Mai 3 with Stainless Bolster and Pommel and the Handle is Linen Micarta with a Beautiful leather sheath. infact I have them posted on my Google Plus. ,, .
I'm very happy with mine,it's a no nonsense knife that does most things better than bushcraft knives that are mega bucks and if I do ever damage it(very doubtful),I'll just get another one.
Mike Travis at Blue Mountain Bushcraft nicknamed this knife the Mora Garberg killer! I agree with Mike, and you that this is a great knife and sheath, and probably the highest value knife on the market today, along with the Terava Skrama. I have added additional nicknames, and also call the Terava Jakaaripuukko the Native Survival Puuko Knife Killer, the Sospes Knife Killer, and the Feral Woodcraft/Black Feather Knife Killer, as it outperforms the aforementioned $200+ knives designed by You Tube Bushcrafters. All of those knives, and many others, though higher in price, do not come close to the value offered by the Terava Jakaaripuukko! Also... Don't talk too much about the great price, as Varusteleka of Finland may hear you and raise the price. Thanks for the review!
Luke, I do not have the Mora Garberg, but was referencing a comment made by Mike Travis at Blue Mountain Bushcraft, who compared the Terava Jakaaripuukko to the Mora Garberg. He called the Terava, the Mora Garberg Killer! In the Mora line, I have the Mora Bushcraft Black, the Mora Companion HD, and the Mora Light My Fire knives. These knives are all great, and work especially well for most general bushcraft tasks. I can't see why one would need a full tang Mora Garberg, especially if you had the Terava, which is a much higher value, and very stout, plus some of the other Mora knives, especially the Bushcraft Black. I have other full tang knives that are very stout, and perfect for heavy duty tasks that you would not want to use a partial tang knife to perform. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too!
@@msilverhammer Only advantage of Garberg is really sharp hard steel no nonsense spine. Terava have mediocre spine with soft outer layers. Don't like it so much. I got Terava 110, 140 and Garberg also. Also, I love Garberg end of tang on the back much more than Terava's back ring.
Very strange to see -6c and no snow on the ground. Here in the land of thousand lakes, It's almost never cold and dry at the same time. If it's in the negative temperatures, you will see snow somewhere.
I have the 140 and the 85...and I love them! As I tend to bring the taiga machete as I prefer to pair it with the 85... with a silky saw and a old fashioned friction folder or a siberian neck-knife for food I am good to go as far as blades are concerned. I have heard critics on you can't replace a damaged handle on the field...someone has to be either very stupid or very clumsy to destroy a ruberish handle of the puukos on the field... And a full enclosing handle might be important on protecting your fingers on extreme temperatures from the contact with the metal of the full tang... have you seen those videos of people kissing lamp post by minus 20° and being stuck to the metal...? About the drawing: yes, perhaps innapropriate...but is it so for people whith a different culture (like sauna together....)?
I own close to 100 custom and semi custom knives including bushcraft knives from the states and all over the world. I got mine for $43 on eBay. I can say with absolute conviction that this is the best bushcraft in the world for that price. 80crv2 is an incredible steel way better than O1, 5160 and the 1000nt steels. I love the dependability this knife gives you. No need to spend crazy money on bushcraft knives and I would know. Respect to the company
Better get it quick. got an email from var. in the evening that they have it back in stock (56 pieces) i wanted to order one the next day, gone. That DIY Cock thing is like tradition with their army. They carve one out when they make camp. Search for the word leirikyrpä. Merry Christmas
Do you know if there's a reason the bevel angle increases past the belly to the tip? At first I thought the blade thickness might be tapered but it appears to be the same the whole length. I suppose that makes for a stronger tip, any thoughts?
How does this compare to the mora garberg and bushcraft black? Is one better than the other? I've been bouncing back and forth between these three for a few weeks now and I can't make a decision
I have the 140 and the Terävä Skrama. Love them. Some of the best tools that I have ever used.
My 140 is incredible. One of my favorite knives I own. Well made at a reasonable price
Yes they are brother, they are very stout an tough as hell, mine is still holding its edge retention decently since everything I've put it through.
it is 85 euro kids
Not $30 anymore over $40 and around $76 to $81 with the leather knife sheath still a good value.
It isn't made in China anymore so that will account for a lot of that, along with demand of course. And it's still way cheaper than the garberg.
For clarification to some: Puukko does not equal every knife in finnish. Puukko means hunting outdoor oriented knife. Other knives are called veitsi.
You are absolutely correct! I would at least expect this guy to pronounce Jaakaripuukko correctly, but that might be too much to ask. Cheers, Steve
you forgot mora
I have the 140 model. It feels like a much smaller knife as it is so well balanced and ergonomic. A real pleasure to use.

Haha I have this disease as well......it can't be cured! - Luke
TheOutdoorGearReview But the symptoms can be treated with TMP (too many puukkos).
the damn things have to go and be damn near indestructible and affordable to boot.
Hello! I just bought one, following your link to Varusteleka! Thanks a lot for the review, it helped me define which knife to buy ...
Thanks for this interesting review. I have the 140 MM bladed version, and have just sent for the same but in stainless steel. I have been absolutely delighted with my knife. 5 years on and it’s doubled in price, unsurprisingly. Just got mine today!
I have the longer version of this knife. really great knife. better than the garberg.
the only thing that I liked more than the 110 was your enthusiasm and sheer energy during the review.
Purchased the 140 in carbon steel. Looks like I got in quick enough since it is now sold out again. You weren't kidding about them going fast. Thank you for what you do. Its certainly up there with the best, when price is considered. Which it should be, imo.
Peltonen M95 / M07 is another solid and very similar option, also available from Varusteleka.
Dude that knife looks awesome... I will be ordering one soon after the holidays. ..
all gone :D
Great review.... sold me on the value looking forward to getting mine!
Great review Luke thank you. Can't believe the price.
Mine was delivered today and it is everything you said it was.
That's a tool made for hard use. I have one, and it's the best value in a knife I've ever owned
Great review and video. Thanks for sharing. The Jaakaripuukko 110 carbon steel is one of my top faves! Love this knife--simple, functional, and solid.
I just got mine a few minutes ago and it is awesome! Sharp too.
ill take your word luke .... just ordered with sheath £62.88 to the uk

Which is why the Sovs rolled over Finland, but stayed out of Sweden. Right?
***** Sounds like someone skipped history :D
KlanStar If you think differently...I would say so, yeah.
***** Sure thing buddy. Sweden was such a mighty military force that the soviets wouldn't have dared to invade them... Or was it because finns held those communist fucks off of the swedes backs?
KlanStar
Yeah. That's why Finland lost. And why it needed Swedish help to last as long as it did. Right?
Your presentation is very impressive. It looks like a work of art. Merry Christmas Brian 76
I wish I would have sen this before I bought my new Schrade and Mora knives. Gotta figure a way to make this purchase and not seem knife obsessed to my family.
Robb Burr Same problem here. I just order them anyways and live with the shame ;-)
Simple: Just put your Schrade on ebay ;)
I ordered mine and then came out to the family about my obsession with new found pride.
Looks like a great value without a doubt.
Have you tried the J.P. Peltonen M95 Sissipuukko? The the one and only ranger knife! It lasts from father to son.
Both are great knives though and you can’t go wrong with either one of them, depending on personal preference of course.
got one, thx Luke!
Okay. My knife came in in Saturday and I can definitely say that I like it better than the Bushcraft Black.
Great stuff! I have the Skrama and my 'Puukko is on the way now!
just got mine and its sweet, worth pointing out it also fits into a Mora knife sheath. so i can still sit them on top of each other.
Never got around to reviewing mine, but I was able to get one after signing up for email notification. Like you said they sell fast and show up randomly. Get on the email list to be first notified everyone!
How long have you had yours for? How is it holding up? - Luke
They are great knives
HAPPY Late BIRTHDAY from your buddy Luke!
I hope that it was a great one! - Luke
Good video! Nords make the best knifes ;)
Yes we do indeed.
Sebastian Malmström yes my dude
Swedes make the best steel and Finns make the best bushcraft knives.Americans make the best hunting, combat, survival knives and the Japanese make the best Chefs knives. End of story
That's an absolute bargain for $55, I have a slightly cheaper but very similar scandi, a Bahco 2449 'Wrecking Knife', it's got a plastic sheath, but generally can be bought for about £20 (sorry, I'm a Limey) . Mine stays near my stove for turning kindling into feather sticks for fire lighting. Very similar blade geometry and measurements, so I can understand why you love yours, especially in that sheath.
will definitely look at this as a contender against Mora
It's not really male and female versions. The general idea is to pick a knife whose blade lenght is about the same as your palm's width.
Thanks Msilver! I haven't gotten around to working with the Garberg yet.
What are your thoughts on it?
Merry Christmas! - Luke
Luke,
I do not have the Mora Garberg, but was referencing a comment made by Mike Travis at Blue Mountain Bushcraft, who compared the Terava Jakaaripuukko to the Mora Garberg.
Sweet Looking Great Review !
Thanks Alan. Have a great weekend. - Luke
How do you know if it’s a full tang or a rat tail tang? What does it look like under the Handle?
I'm still impressed with my 140 an I plan on getting the skrama also an maybe a 110 as a smaller task knife.
Of course, well-made, it is made in Finland for military use, and. Can also be used normally..
I own this knife and I definitely recommend it. It is great for hard work, but not for things like for example making sandwiches. :)
I like that it's no nonsense. Excellent blade, excellent value.
- Luke
Do you know if there's a reason the bevel angle increases past the belly to the tip? At first I thought the blade thickness might be tapered but it appears to be the same the whole length. I suppose that makes for a stronger tip, any thoughts?
I have the skrama....am now debating if I should pick up one or two of these....🤔
I heard that if there is second bevel then it is not Scandi grind and it is actually sabre grind.
How does this compare to the mora garberg and bushcraft black? Is one better than the other? I've been bouncing back and forth between these three for a few weeks now and I can't make a decision
my only regret was not buying one with a sheath ... other than that this always comes along with the skrama
Nice! Merry Christmas TOGR =^.^=
Thanks for sharing nice looking knife
100% made in Finland.
how it is even a good thing? From a Country famous for Reindeers, Botanists and failled mercenaries.
Georges IV Reindeers, botanists and mercenaries (even failed ones) need a good knife.
