Songs that didn't hold up (or did) - 2000s edition! We look at 2000s songs from Red Hot Chili Peppers "Dani California", Katy Perry "I Kissed A Girl" and "Hot And Cold", My Chemical Romance "I'm Not OK", and Justice "D.A.N.C.E." Did they hold up? What are the best 2000s songs?

The first time (and actually only time, regrettably) I saw My Chemical Romance live was at a show in I think 2004 or 2005. They were opening for someone, I don't remember who now. I wasn't the biggest fan of MCR, as I was entirely too cool for mall emo. However, when MCR went on stage, they blasted "I'm Not Okay" and holy fucking shit did they kill it. Honestly, one of the best live shows I've ever seen. I wanted to hate it so that I could hold up my mental image of how cool I thought I was because MCR was too basic for me, but I couldn't. They were incredible.
I was a punk rocker starting to shift into metal and even though I talked all kinds of crap about them when this song and/or video was on I couldn’t help but love it
Ehhh I still don't like them just wasn't for me.
@@6maniac6metal6 Same I went the punk to grunge route
Just wait till you see Gojira live...
Core memory forming moment.
The first time I saw them in concert, they were with Story of the Year, Anberlin and possibly one other band.. I loved them but they sounded like absolute ass live. I think they've gotten a lot better but it was ROUGH.
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is a banger from start to finish.
It’s interesting how MCR is seen as *the* soundtrack to 2000s teenage angst when I’m Not Okay is really their only song that’s actually about being a teenager. Most of their others are about comic book horror stuff like demon cowboys and whatnot.
But yeah that’s what an early single that good will do to your image. As an unabashed MCR stan I can easily name a dozen of their songs I’d take over I’m Not Okay, but the song and especially the video are iconic as hell.
Edit: I somehow forgot about the song Teenagers on their next album, but even that song is written from the perspective of a concerned older guy. Though it still makes sense for edgy teens to latch onto it
Helena too
Bruv they literally got a song called Teenagers
@@eliminator173 Helena is about Gerard and Mikey's deceased grandma
@@pissluffarskov i know that.
Terrible point
"I'm Not Okay" might be one of the greatest songs every written. "Helena" is great too. The songwriting is perfect, and the way Frank and Ray play different guitar parts to turn a somewhat simple song into something that sounds so fresh and interesting is genius.
MCR's instrumentals don't get nearly enough love
So many great songs on the end of that album too. It's not a fashion statement, hang em high, venom.... They pack such a lot into a 3 or 4 minute song. Incredible
3 cheers is such a riveting album and it’s a testament to mcr’s strength as musicians. black parade is still their magnum opus imo, but 3 cheers was really the jumpstart of putting emo back into the limelight for a while
How dare you? Anthony Ketus gives hope to us subpar singers
Can't stand his voice. 🤮
Better singer than Katy perry
Based Anthony Ketus vs virgin Anthony Kiedis
Nah, yeetus this Ketus
I mean, have you heard Death Cab? I love their music but he's basically talking.
i’m 47 and i still rock out to “im not okay” every day on my way to work 💜
Finn is the master of explaining and immersing you in really general meet-cute scenarios.
I'm Not Okay was my High School theme song, 18 years later, it still is.
You’re still in high school?
Ugh we got Vitamin C - Graduation. The most cliché thing, ever.
@@KnivingDispodiaHe’s still not okay?!
Its always a great morning when finn posts
its after work watch for me lmao
He reminds of the Simpsons episode where Abe is in the newspaper that reads "Old man shakes fist at cloud" lol jk
I didn't appreciate MCR at the time and now I'm a huge fan. They stood the test of time. Amazing band.
Same. I always liked them and their singles, but only recently sat down and gave all of their albums a good thorough listen. I'm kicking myself. So much time wasted not fully appreciating them!
@ghost mall gerard is extremely theatrical, but the message is always serious. Most of their early stuff especially revolves around the lead singer's alcohol and drug addiction, and his depression
As a lifelong hardcore RHCP fan, I must say they are my favorite band despite AK's singing capabilities (or lack thereof). The other three guys are so great you learn to hear past Kiedis, or you even learn to like his goofy lyrics and underwhelming vocal ability. Flea, Chad, John, Josh (Klinghoffer) and Dave (Navarro) are all amazing musicians and there's no way I'd ever let Kiedis stopping my love for those guys. That being said, Kiedis is arguably better these days, especially in The Return of the Dream Canteen and in his live performances. Nowhere near the level of his bandmates, but surely way better than he used to be (especially if compared to BSSM or before that).
Very well said, and here's something to remember about Tony K- He may not have great vocals, but Blood Sugar Sex Magic dropped at a time that just connected with so many people like myself. The balance of juvenile lyrics that are just fun (Give It Away) and the deeper ones (Breaking the Girl, Could have Lied) really struck a chord with a lot of us Gen-Xers. It was a combination of not giving a poop, and caring very deeply, both of which felt very sincere. Yes, it's a paradox, but that pretty much sums up Gen-X.
Yup. We're all here for John and Flea.
@@DoNuT_1985 I mean.. you're not won't, but Chad is also awesome!
I would say the album tracks on stadium Arcadium hold a lot of hidden gems, that album is severely underrated bc of how common it is for people to say everything after BSSM is bad
Well said, friend! RHCP is my favorite band is spite of Keidis, but the newest 2 albums that came out last year might actually be his best work
Thinking about it, the first music video I ever saw in my life was "Helena". Not only did the whole.. MCR imagery.. instantly strike me but the sentiment of having to tell someone goodbye forever and how they said it still sticks with me to this day.
I'm Not Okay slaps. MCR's You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison slaps too.
That Crate amp that Ray was playing, the BV-120, was actually one of the rare good amps that Crate made, and was designed in collaboration with Mesa Boogie and Ampeg. They're made in the USA, built like a tank, and you can still get one of the heads for under $400 even with inflation. Extremely underrated.
False. Blue Voodoo’s are noisy hot garbage
"I'm Not Okay" is perfect power pop goodness with angsty emo clothing. The aesthetic may have been a fad but songwriting like that is timeless.
three cheers best mcr album for me, it's one of my favourites of all time
Black Parade for me. Only liked a couple of songs off Three Cheers.
I saw MCR live at this time before black parade, and I have to say they were absolutely incredible. The most energetic and insane performance that made me a fan immediately
Dani California holds us when it's sung by Tom Petty and titled "Mary Jane's last dance".
The last line sums up every PRMBA/Finn video: "we are all scene vets with ptsd"
Katy perry used to date the lead singer from Relient K. The song “Marilyn Manson ate my girlfriend” from their first album is about her.
For the record, we, french, actually prononced Justice as americans at the time, I dont know anybody that says Justice as we would in a french sentence for this band. How ironic that american hipsters thought they had it… Here, my contribution to today’s video.
they chose this name because it was easy to pronounce both in french en in english . Both prononciations are correct.
Anthony Kiedis is a brave man for that thumbnail and he deserves respekt
My Chemical Romance "Ghost of You" was the song that hit me by surspise. song itself is great but with the music video its heartbreaking tbh
“You like D&D, fangoria, Audrey Hepburn, Harry Houdini and Croquet. You can’t swim, you can’t dance and you don’t know karate…you’re never gunna make it.”
“I don’t wanna make it, I just wanna…”
Quoted in my sleep at this point LOL
Unpopular opinion 2000s > 90s
I still bust out Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. All the music videos from that album were fantastic
I thought "Helena" was the breakout single from My Chem???
You're not a hipster for championing 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge'. You'd be a hipster for saying any song from 'I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love' was their best
2:45 “Will Ferrel” LMAOOO because I genuinely thought Will Ferrel was on drums for RHCP until last year
As a huge fan of both rock and electronic music, Justice resonated with me on their Cross album
I could only imagine the kind of hell that was NYC from 2007-2010 at the peak of the indie/bloghouse era. Pixie cuts, bangs, pleather jackets, and coke galore
2000s has the highest highs and the lowest lows
I'm usually not into electronic music or dance music but that Justice album (Cross) is legendary and I still come back and listen to it from time to time.
I kissed a girl, Last Friday Night and Hot n Cold will forever be bangers. Oh and Starstrukk with 3OH!3. My girlfriend basically discovered her sexuality thanks to that era of Katty Perry.
I love MCR. Started with a few songs from Three Cheers, and then the whole Bullets album before I heard Black Parade and then revisited Three Cheers. I love Welcome to the Black Parade, but to this day...If I hear I'm Not Okay playing anywhere, I will sing along to it. Doesn't matter if it's from my spotify in my car or in somewhere public. It's one of the songs I will play when I'm having a bad day. It definitely holds up
Both albums are great in their own right, but The Black Parade is the more complete album in my opinion when compared to Three Cheers. I still love Three Cheers tho
Not gonna lie I thought Katy and zoey were the same person for a long time. They are definitely both my type lol
Old school Katy Perry holds up, 100%. I'll die on this hill.
Most Red Hot Chili Peppers fans I know have an album where they feel the band lost it, it's just later for a lot of people who I imagine are a fair bit younger than you. Stadium Arcadium was huge when I was in high school.
Yeah Anthony kinda sucks. You are totally right. I read the prologue to his autobiography when I was in rehab once and you can tell that him and the band members have a lot of history. I listen to I'm Not Okay regularly, it's my favorite MCR song too. I know every word to the music video, it's the best. They had one album before this but this was when this debuted on MTV and unlike RHCP every dude in their band is like 100% at the top of their game musically. this came out when I was like 14 too so it was my shit
Rhcp is easily better than mcr they have one good song the black parade that's it. I've never even heard the song he played in the video.
Nothing like reading a autobiography In rehab😂😂😂 did most of my reading in rehab
@@zachemorgan well you’re clearly not biased 😂
@@lavenderllamamusic not really mcr is music for your emo phase at 13 while rhcp is much deeper music spirtualy.
Can we not forget that Mikey and Ray are cuties too and aged like fine wine?
I like that you mentioned Will Ferrell as the real drummer
I worked with a guy named Kiedis, his mum was a big RHCP fan, genuinely felt bad for the guy
Oof
The best stuff by the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the live jams when Anthony leaves and lets the band be good
D.A.N.C.E was a song I wasn't into when it came out, but I actually appreciate parts of it now. I crank it every once in awhile just because the bass is interesting and the vocal remixing is interesting. I was in the car with a friend and it came on. Not as bad as I thought I would find it.
That entire first album from Justice is incredible. I think it still holds up well today
@@lavenderllamamusic Hard agree, give the whole thing a spin. DVNO is one of the goofiest, most fun tracks I can think of.
I like "Helena" a little more than I'm not okay..but it's still a fun one.
I have made the fan-fiction as requested. It is titled as such: "Gerfrankus, a love story: "i wasnt ok until i stroked your strings"
RHCP is held back by Kiedis cause he dont rap no more, he wasnt a good rapper, but rap made more sense with RHCP
Yeah BSSM was their last good album, they need to get back on that funky shit
Low Rise jeans please.
Hello Finn, greetings from Germany. I am one of those Red Hot Chili Peppers listeners, or at least used to be (Kind of lost interest after Stadium Arcadium). Always I have been a bit surprised about your opinion when it comes to RHCP. But since everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and taste is basically nothing to argue about I never commented on that one. But since you so specifically asked for it in this video, I will do so now. I discovered this band quite late, actually when they released Californication in 1999. Up to today I think this Album and the follow up By The Way are my favorite RHCP-Albums (followed by BSS&M and Stadium Arcadium). Back in the days those two albums were constantly playing in my Opel cassette deck (No CD-Player on board). Up to today I think Californication and By The Way are masterpieces . So for me it was kind of weird to hear you say that everything after BSS&M is basically not worth listening to. The aforementioned albums I think are also pretty high on the list of the majority of RHCP fans, So I guess, that might be the reason why your stance on RHCP is quite unpopular. As someone who started listening and appreciating the RHCP with Californication (I recently turned 40) it is also kind of difficult to go back to the albums they released before BSS&M. I tried Mothers Milk for example, but that just wouldnt do it for me. As for Stadium Arcadium I think they should have selected the best tracks and put them on one CD (as is the case with most double albums) With that being said (;-)), I like to say that I really enjoy your content. (Even though my musical taste offen differs from yours, but thst is not the end of the world). Keep up the good work!
Yeah I agree with your take. I remember them from the 90s in the US and BSSM was huge and even bigger after Californication.
And yeah a lot of old heads like Mother's milk but it just doesn't do it for me.
I dig their stuff through Stadium Arcadium
Can't Wait to See Which Songs Make the List This Time.
The mystery behind the RHCP stans is that they're loved by suburban burnouts. Just like every generation has the Slayer/Metallica heshers, there's also the Chilli Pepper/Sublime burnouts. I see em all over the schools I drive for.
Christina Aguilera Dirty video was some peak content. Thank you for reminding me of that I need to go rewatch that 😂
I love your videos about the early 2000's. After watching your last video, I decided to take a look back at my senior yearbook from 06' and realized that my graduating class was the last bit of pop punk and boy band kids before emo culture and style completely took over. An overall good time to be young.
Any time Finn says the word "dance", my brain autocompletes it with "Gavin dance".
Something something California
Awesome vid Finn. I look forward to a Fear Factory Mckentypedia video in the future 🤛🤛
I love Katy Perry's first 2 albums. That first one leans the hardest on her roots in rock, and a few songs on the second album like Hummingbird Heartbeat and Circle the Drain still have a bit of that rock side to them. Katy said in a video with Glamour Magazine in 2018 that she'd probably make a few changes to the lyrics to I Kissed a Girl if she wrote it today, because it was somewhat based in stereotypes about bisexuality circa 2008. Song still slaps, though. One of the Boys is a killer pop rock album.
first time I heard/saw mcr it was from this video, think I was 11 or 12 at the time, back when MTV played music videos from like 7am-12pm, then had reality tv on the rest of the day. I was watching music videos and the one for I'm Not Okay came on. I was instantly attracted to the sound of the chord progressions and the aesthetic of the band and was hooked from there on out, was obsessed with the band, 3 Cheers for Sweet revenge, and their first album. I started to tail off during the Black Parade, and haven't really listened to any of their stuff after that, although I always gave it a shot, and saw them live with Taking Back Sunday in 08 (I think?). Can't say enough how much this band helped me through some hard times.
@@lewienew I did, I really liked it! Hope they release a full album like that
Anthony Kiedis has a mid voice at best, I think in their early stuff it just suited their alternative sound. But as they grew he just fell behind the rest of his stellar band mates. I mean damn, he's not even the best creepy looking dude in the band. Flea not only slaps the bass, he also kills it with his homeless aesthetic.
Sadly fanboys will always come after you. I mean Coldplay is apparently good eventhough they peaked with Parachutes.
How many times did MCR rerelease 'I'm not OK' before it stuck? I honestly think Teenagers is better than anything else they did, it speaks to my grumpy old man "get of my lawn" energy.
Every time I watch one of these I realize even more that Finn and I have very little overlap with our music tastes. Always enjoy hearing his take on different bands and tracks tho.
RHCP is about the vibe. Anothony Keidis checks out for this reason. Technical abilities is not always needed to be great. You would know if you ever listened to Slam Music.
MCR are my fav Band and I'm a fanboy since i first heard them with "Na Na Na" in 2010.
But MCR's best song is "I'm Not Okay" it might be on the second place for most known Songs. But you can't tell me this is still one of the most catchy alternative Songs of all time. Also it's pretty clear that MCR have metal and even metalcore influences. Like, they Touren with Shai Hulud, Misery Signals, Underoath and gave a shoutout to Shai Hulud on Three cheers (i believe).
Three Cheers is and will forever be one of my fav albums of all time with "Sempiternal" by BMTH and "Love Is Not Enough" by Casey.
Lol how old are you?
@@joshwalters3178 25, what does that have to do with anything?
Lol It's all subjective man. For example I think that Na Na Na song is awful. 🤷♂️
I'd have to argue for Helena being their "second biggest song" when that shit came out it was like a hot topic movement.... Everybody was wearing black with red eye makeup all of a sudden, lol
@@IxQuit and Ghost of you is uo there too. Probably 3rd most known MCR song
Nice Eliza Blew jab!
I'm Not Okay's guitar intro >>>>>>>
So... Anthony keatus puts the CP in RHCP?
Good lord this made me choke XD
😂
14:48 Guys I don't want to alarm anyone, but I don't think he's talking about sharing a delicious Coke-a-Cola with these young ladies.
Frank and Gerard together is Frerard
Didn‘t the frontman from My Chemical Romance record a song with the singer from the norwegian Black Metal Band Emperor?
Fin being shut down in his imaginary conversation with Katy Perry after closing out a long work day at the mall made my morning. I've been there pal.
I'm a hipster. I was disappointed when Black Parade came out. It's good but definitely not on the same level as Three Cheers. I listen to Black Parade for nostalgia purposes. I listen to Three Cheers for enjoyment
Bro. Dani California BANGS.
My favorite detail in this video is that all of Finn's recommended are music videos he's already watched.
Anthony Keidis is like Tom Delonge and Fred Durst. Average vocalists, but a good energetic frontman backed by solid music and great hooks.
i really like cross, it's a great album imo
Hahaha! Holy fuck i actually lol'd. Red got chilli pepper fans, "what are they called? Chillis?"
Rhcp grew on me. I used to hate the singer, but now they're one of my favorites. Perfect summertime rock
Im not okay from "burnout" soundtrack hell yeah 🤘🤘
Every time I hear "Dani California," the lyrics I hear are courtesy of my college roommate playing Rock Band: "Cal-i-fornia, poop and pee; with my penis, I make skeet."
Flea, John and Will FTW! Lol 😂😂😂
That was also the first MCR song I heard. I think I was in like 5th grade or so watching it on Fuse.
I remember when Katy Perry was in P.O.D. and Gym Class Heroes music videos before she blew up
Yea she sold her soul and became famous.
I was shocked when I found out that was Katy in that POD track Goodbye For Now. I TOTALLY thought that was Lacey from Flyleaf
My boyfriend is in the German RHCP fan Club. It’s almost like a cult 😂😂 they meet up with fans from all over the world, have their own gossip between different fan groups. Sounds like Highschool to be honest.
Can we start calling RHCP Stans the “Produce Section”
why haha
I'm more of a Helena person myself. Also more of a The Used fan.
Oh yeah recently I found out she really did kiss a girl and that is probably what the song is about and I don’t understand how people thought she was joking when she made this song
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge imo was MCR best album by far.
I'm totally obsessed with RHCP and Anthony
2009 was my first trip to rehab thanks to 2007-2008. Absolutely NOT proud. Thanks Justice.
Katty Perry's dad guest preached at our church back in the day and he told me I had style. So I have that going for me...........
I'm not okay was voted #1 in the Saddest 100 pop punk/emo countdown. That would be a great list to react to btw!
That was my first MCR song too. I actually loved EVERY song in Three Cheers. Their first album was really impressive too. I remember it having more of a horror punk feel than emo. Then I stopped listening to them so I never understood the hype about the Black Parade. Maybe I should revisit it.
As someone who loves Bullets and Three Cheers (best MCR album imo), The Black Parade is phenomenal. But I always separate it from the others because, to me, it’s their rock opera and it’s all like “look what else we’re capable of”.
The lyrics, the arrangement, everything hits the mark on that album
@@lavenderllamamusic Thanks, I'll give it a listen.
I always called that haircut the "duck butt"
I've never been a fan of RHCP but started playing guitar in a dedicated cover band a few months ago with some great musicians thinking it'd be easy because I can play third rate Hendrix solos and funk rhythms - wrong, their material is really hard to play with authority and is very well-arranged, and I have a whole new respect for them (minus Kiedis, luckiest man in rock history - makes the songs harder to learn because I have to tune him out). "Dani California" is on our set list and it's very fun to play - the singers are two women in their late 40s who think Kiedis is hot, so I'm gonna say that's the demographic, chicks who've always wanted to bang Anthony. RHCP would be a million times better with Mike Patton (or anyone, really) but wouldn't have been as successful.
@ghost mall and all those guys are inarguably great players, it's just weird to me to be all about that sort of...competency? I have the same influences as all those guys and am their age, and I respect it but none of them have what inspired any of us to start playing in the first place. It's not that they can't and don't, but just an intangible level of "bringing it" if you know what I mean. It's all been done. Frusciante I'm increasingly impressed by - he has the chops and could do the "thing" but goes out there and it's more memorable and interesting than Mayer is for me.
12:27 Make a Livejournal or Xanga account...
Okay that was so accurate in 2005 lol!
I think Keidis was best when he kept to the high speed pseudo rapping where he didn't really have to focus on tune
RHCP Dani California directly references Mr Bungle's album California and the long running feud between Mike Patton and Kiedis. Anthony had Bungle thrown off a load of festival dates saying they had plagiarised RHCP by releasing California in the same month as Californication. Bungle retaliated by playing a set dressed as RHCP and performing joke karaoke versions of their songs. That's why RHCP are dresssed as other bands in the video and the lyrics state 'simultaneous release' - It's a catty swipe at Bungle who had to split up after cancellations financially crippled them. I totally hated RHCP after that. Bungle were my favourite band.
No, that is not why they are dressed up in the video. They smashed that beef years before Dani California came out, even Patton said he doesn't not remember (or care) about the feud anymore and that he is sure that if he runs into Kiedis, they'd embrace. Anthony Kiedis did threaten festival organizers that they would not play unless Mr Bungle was removed from the bill ( way back in the 90's). Anthony was (is?) an egomaniac narcissist for sure but the rest of the band was not really involved in that beef...
Tony is holding back the Peppers, in my opinion if they would fire Tony and bring in someone else like Parry Pharrell they’d be a much better band
I kissed a girl and I’m not okay both are 10/10. Also the ghost of you by MCR is amazing too.
after listening to i’m not okay i def feel like listening to ghost of you right after that video is amazing as well
Ghost of you not in you. Are you even a fan ?
