The farm I work at used to have an 8400R up until fall of 2022 and still has two 8R370s with the IVT for seeding, fertilizing and occasional grain transport as well as ripper and cultivator work. They are equipped with CTIS and decently wide tires (front 650/60R34 and rear 900/70R42, but for spring fertilizer ops switched to 710/70R36).
It's liked very much by the drivers, especially because they have a massage seat from Grammer to help one of the drivers with his back pain.
One thing that stands out though is the very long hood, even compared to a large tractor like the Fendt 1050. While this helps to cope with bumps and rough terrain, it also makes it a very long tractor, so it does get tight on our roads.

I guarantee you that the engines in these modern tractors (any brand) doesn't have that sweet music coming out of the chrome exhaust stack like the big tractors in the 60's did. I loved to listen to our JD4020's 404 CI Diesel sing and that M&W turbo whistle, especially at night. Then there was the black coal that would roll out of the exhaust stack when I sank that moldboard plow into the ground and pulled that throttle lever down. Those were tractors! The prices on modern farm equipment blows my mind, whether it be tractors, combines, or the implements they pull. My Dad died in 1983 when prices were still comparatively low. Dad would roll over in his grave if he saw today's prices. Farming has become impossible for those who would like to enter the field from scratch without any BIG MONEY support behind them. Dad bought a brand new JD4020D in 1964 that he paid around $6000 for. In today's dollars that would be around $60K. We had two of those 4020 diesels (64 & 68) and we farmed about 1000 acres with them. A farmer should be able to farm about 3000 acres if had 6 of them. Six of them would about equal the price of one new 8R. So my question is how many acres can an 8R farm by itself?

We run 2 8rs, a 2019 8370r and a new 8r310 that we got to go on the gold key tour for this year. Both run an e23, and I have to say I’m astonished on how much smoother the new one shifts compared to the old one. Can barely tell it’s shifting half the time, huge generational transmission upgrade.

Nice! I was curious what farmer thought of the e23 so far, I’ve yet to be around one. Thanks for watching👍🏻👍🏻

@@LocustMotorWorks it’s def solid, not near as smooth on the 8370r but it’s still been very good for us.

Great job, great delivery! You're going to have to do a video about yourself and future goals. Obviously, you're a JD 60 and overall John Deere fan boy, (like many of us), but you have to be thinking further into the future, (things your Dad knows has to happen but doesn't want to be left without help).

Just from working in the repair side of a dealership, the 8r seems to be a solid machine. many new technological advancements, and many more creature comforts in terms of interior quality. heated and cooled and massaging leather seats, a fridge, etc. The one major issue that we have seen with these tractors would be the failure of the braking system. It is not uncommon that the brake shoe material comes apart, causing lack of braking, and clogged hydraulic filters, and burnt clutch packs due to a lack of fluid in the transmission, which is due to the underlying issue, being the brake component failure. This has majorly been seen in dairy farm use, where the tractors are subjected to hauling heavy loads at a high rate of speed, then coming to a stop.

Ive run all the 8000s except the 20 series. Current 8r ride slightly better than previous 8000s because of cab suspension. ILS makes all of them ride better. The 30 series had better mid band torque than the current tractors. The first short R series kinda went backwards on power due to all the emissions. The only thing the same on a current r as an 8000 are the suitcase weights and the option of a 16 speed. Engine is different most , i think all the transmissions are different internally. Final drive is taking almost double the power. cab has beed resigned 2 times. Steering wheel even changed in current 8r.
