King of New York tells the story of notorious gangster Frank White (Walken), just released from prison lowlifes have moved in on his patch so he's going to clean up and in the process his psychosis wrestles with his charitable desire to build a new hospital in the South Bronx. The influence of Ferrara's film is far and wide, from it's use of Hip Hop (by rapper Schoolly D), sensational visuals, treatment of violence and its creation of a cult hero in Frank White, who like Tony Montana in Scarface became an icon and when Biggie Smalls aka 'the Notorious B.I.G.' would check into a hotel he'd use the name Frank White.

Everyone should watch the 4K of this from Arrow. Maybe the best 4K Blu-ray I have seen

I think the thing that makes this stand out from the regular crime drama is how cinematic it is. Like all those shots of Frank just gazing into the NYC skyline met with shots of the streets, and the endless subway, really drive home how massive the city really is, and how much power one man would have from running all of it…aka being the king of it
And the loneliness of it all. One man headed toward his doom yet staring straight into the face of destruction. The death wish is a powerful motif.

It was Abel Ferrara's most expensive film, alot of time went into the lighting set-ups and it all just looks stunning, great film with wonderful performances especially Christopher Walken in one of his best, most impactful and memorable roles. Just a great gangster film that can be enjoyed on many levels, as a man whos seeking salvation/redemption but by a method only he knows best : killing people. Its an iconic film with a Great cast, everyone is on top of their game ! Watch it Now, if you havnt seen it before ! :)
